We enjoyed a very leisurely and delicious meal at Hummingbird Bar and Kitchen. The Prix-fixe menu was perfect for us as we were starved. I love the quaint and rustic feeling of the space which contrasted with the elevated dining experience. The view of the Potomac from the courtyard and restaurant were spectacular The Strawberry Fields Forever specialty cocktail is a refreshing blend of strawberry, mint, and rum. The Palm Royale is just as delightful with St Elder and Pomegranate liqueurs with champagne. Ludmyla was very friendly and Alla the manager helped us out with gluten free options. We enjoyed the Hummingbird Salad, Shrimp Cocktail, Lobster Lemon Linguine (with GF pasta) and Steak Frites. The Crème Brûlée and Flourless Chocolate Torte were a decadent finale for a splendid meal. Staying here at Hotel Indigo so decided to go ahead and use our $15 daily credit since we were being charged daily fee by hotel (for things we didn't really want but no choice so oh well....). Came on a Monday with my family of 4 and the food was great overall (yay) and HH drink prices also great (double-yay). So.... Why only two stars? When our check came it was for $189, but that didn't quite seem to add up based on what we ordered. I noticed there was no itemized receipt so I asked one of the servers if we could please have that. He returned and dropped it off quickly and it said $166 which did add up. Hmmmm? Why the $23 discrepancy? I sat there and our waiter wasn't making eye-contact in the practically empty restaurant but ten minutes later he walked over with a new check showing the $166 amount. No explanation, no oops/sorry, just a here you go. It was kinda disappointing given the nice meal we just had. We booked a reservation for Sunday for brunch. Old Town Alexandria, so there's street parking and some garage parking around. I had shown up first and was offered to either wait for the remainder of my party or be sat first. I waited for my mom and we were sat. Someone came by with some water but we waited 20 minutes with no service. Someone finally came by and asked to start off with drinks but no apologies whatsoever. My mom ordered a bottle of sparkling and he came back with a bottle of red but left the red glasses. My mom clarified that we ordered sparkling and he asked which one we ordered and responded that he would switch it out for us. Overall, the timing of the service and the service itself was disappointing, we ended up leaving to eat elsewhere. As we were leaving, the manager, I believe, asked if we were okay and he said it was his fault that a server didn't come sooner and he offered to comp the bottle which was nice of him. False advertising?! Dining out is never by chance for me. I have studied the menu, read the reviews, and planned out my health conscious meal during the day to be ready to indulge at the restaurant. Sadly, all my research fell short for Hummingbird. Apparently there is a Monday "special menu" that is limited and also has features not available other days. I went tonight with my heart set on the whole grilled fish and hush puppies that I reviewed on the website multiple times. Not available. I still wanted fish, and there was a salmon linguine option. This dish is only offered on Mondays. It was flavorful but heavier than I wanted for the evening. I was clearly upset, however the food was still good, giving the 4 star review. Salmon linguine: 5/5 crispy skin. Lemon cream sauce that was the perfect tang. Spring salad: 5/5 fresh light salad. The spiced pecans were a great bonus. Hummingbird Cake: got this to go! Great and moist. If you do not like banana this is not the dessert for you. The Monday night menu is a great option as there is a 3 course meal for $40! But again, many of the standouts that I heard and wanted to try were not available. I would go back on another night to try those. Apparently there is a happy hour as well. I visited Hummingbird Bar & Kitchen a couple years ago and I couldn't remember the experience. Recently we saw the restaurant and made a conscious decision to drop in to see what I couldn't remember. Since I had to be in Virginia this past Sunday, it was my bright idea to brunch at Hummingbird's. After perusing the menu it dawned on me why I couldn't remember my experience two years prior. The menu was as bland as an unseasoned grilled chicken breast. Now that pretty damn bland!!! I finally decided on the boring Farm Breakfast which consist of two eggs, choice of breakfast meat, potatoes and toast.. Heavy Yawn! She went with the Hummingbird Breakfast Sandwich. Both were fine just boring. The beauty about Hummingbird's is that it's super close to the water and has unobstructed water views. On a rare mild August day, dining outside and taking in the gorgeous weather trumped the underwhelming meal. Our server was pleasant but slightly awkward, however, the manager was super active and checked on us at least twice which was nice! I'll come back to Hummingbird's in a couple years to see if they've added some spice to their brunch menu because with the plethora of options in Old Town, it may take me three years before my next visit.. We had brunch outside here maybe three years ago and it was decent, so we felt comfortable getting 4th of July dinner reservations at Hummingbird for us and our friends visiting from out of town. The kitchen did pretty good. Also the view of the Potomac waterfront from the restaurant is good. However, our server was woefully inexperienced and clearly undertrained. Two people in our party wanted the Seafood Platter Happy Hour, which goes from 4pm-7pm on Fridays and Sundays. The Seafood Platter is the Raw Power Platter at half the price. Since it was Friday before 7:00pm, we thought the Seafood Platter Happy Hour was in effect. But our server said, no, the menu was wrong. That didn't sit well with our table, and we requested to see the manager. He agreed that since the menu posted the days/times for the happy hour, we could take advantage of that. Speaking of service, what is with the staff's checkered gingham shirts and dresses. Is this a country hoedown on the Potomac? For my starter, I ordered the brie cheese with blackberry jam and crostini. The chef sprinkled parsley over the cheese and jam. Why? For my entrée, I ordered the New York Strip Steak medium-rare. It came well-done and as tough as shoe leather. Accompanying the steak were limp and oily fries. And once again, they splattered parsley over everything on the plate. In all fairness, my party did like the Lobster Lemon Linguini, the Pan Seared Black Bass and the Raw Power Platter. Also, the Banana Pudding for dessert was excellent. I loved the toasted marshmallow cream that came with the pudding. The hush puppies were delicious. I also ordered coffee with cream for dessert. Our server didn't bring me a spoon so I had to request one. We thought it was funny that she brought me a big soup spoon. To top off the evening, our server had a terrible time figuring out our bill, it took her forever. As a matter of fact, she ran my credit card six times before she got it right. This experience would probably in large part explain why Hummingbird was mostly empty while we were there, when at the same time Barco and Ada's on the River were bursting at the seams with patrons. read more

We visited here this past Friday after playing outside for a quick lunch before heading home and it was very nice. The service was great and the food was tasty. I will say it's a tad pricey in my opinion $19 for a chicken salad sandwich but it's also inside of a hotel so I can understand why it is priced a little higher. If I needed something quick again and walking distance before the other local restaurants open I would return but I'm not sure I'd rush back. read more

This is a cute little Amish style bar/restaurant located inside of the Hotel Indigo. The service was impeccable; the bartender was the sweetest ever. She kept a smile the entire time she was working. I didn't get to experience any food since I'd already had dinner, but the drinks were really good, and I would definitely recommend. They have lovely outdoor patio seating as well. I booked an overnight at Hotel Indigo in Old Town. I had already planned to check out Hummingbird. My IHG Platinum status came with a drink voucher issied at check in. So I sat at the bar, mid afternoon. The Hummingbird Pils was a very nice beer. The Winter Salad was excellent. It had just the right balance. Crisp green apples sliced paper thin, greens, spiced pecans, dried cranberries and just a bit of blue cheese made it perfect. The nice dressing was nicely applied. I would definitely want to try a full meal here another time. It was too cold today for the outdoor spaces, but the views are lovely. read more

Came here on a weeknight for a day night. No wait, get seated right away. The restaurant looks modern and is a block away from the waterfront. We ordered a dozen oysters for appetizer, the lobster linguine and the Southern Bouillabaisse for entree, and banana pudding for dessert. Everything was delicious! The lobster linguine could use lighter sauce. Service was quick and great. We were seated next to the bar of which people were having happy hours. Went there for an event which was to be out doors but due to rain ended up indoors...still a special place and an even more special day. Food was a series of terrific appetizers which ranged from vegetarian to fish and shrimp. All were exceptional. Dinner was set so my comments are that the food was exceptional. We stayed at Hotel Indigo less than two weeks ago, which shares the building with Hummingbird. Our room included a $50/day credit to Hummingbird for breakfasts so we had three days of delicious meals. The location is fabulous, service was incredible (the server that was there each morning remembered us and our orders!), the restaurant is very clean, and the food is delicious. 3.5 stars Not bad. Came on a weekday and it was pretty empty and service was attentive. Was able to find street parking. The Royale: a yummy cocktail and we got ours made with 0% alcohol. Fried oysters: wasn't a fan-- a lot of breading, greasy, and 2 of the oysters I had was super chewy and tough...inedible. Crab grilled cheese: great flavor and a decent amount of crab. However it was pretty greasy and I wish the bread was less soggy and a bit more crispy. The fries that came with it were good. I dug in so fast I didn't take a picture before I started eating. Fish and chips was good, salmon was supposedly good, but my shrimp Louis salad was unimaginative, not what I've had before, seemed thrown together. The entire experience was overshadowed by the poor service. While the waitress was sweet, it was as though she'd been handed a tablet with an app which was user unfriendly, and it took 20" to order the food and the order was wrong. Everything took forever, including the time it took for her to approach us. Very loud, a/c was not working. Comped us our apps but the place was a disaster. Came to Hummingbird OTX for a date night after work and had such a great experience. The place was clean, cozy, and had a great vibe. The staff were very friendly and attentive and really made us feel welcome. We tried the linguine, steak frites, hush puppies, and the Hummingbird signature cake. Everything was delicious. The linguine had the perfect balance of spice and seafood, the steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and I loved the parmesan on the fries. We learned the chef is also from NC and adds his own twist to the hush puppies, which I absolutely loved. Cakes can be hit or miss for me but this one was a hit. Drinks were great too. He had a beer and I had a cocktail, both excellent. I also loved the decor and overall vibe. It was dark when we visited, but we plan to come back during the day to enjoy the patio and try more dishes. Highly recommend. Some could be done a little better. But overall, we had a great time. Now, the manager is a complete UGH. Our waitress was overwhelmed and moving as best she could. In the middle of taking our order, the manager comes up and talks down to the waitress. If there's a problem, don't hash it out in front of customers. That was extremely rude and disrespectful. It's been quite a while (3 years) since we last visited Hummingbird, so it was overdue for our re-visit. A beautiful space, with a great view of the Potomac inside the Indigo Hotel, Hummingbird Bar & Kitchen is a great place for a drink, apps or a meal. My chief complaint (which isn't solely directed at Hummingbird or any restaurant in / near Robinson Landing) is parking. That's really an Old Town thing. The menu sports a number of tantalizing items to choose from, some of which are variations on standards (e.g. the Beastly Smash Burger) while others are distinct and delish (the Salmon Bowl). The Fried Chicken Sandwich had a huge piece of fried bird and wonderful homemade pickles (as did the Burger). The sauce was sort of a cross between remoulade and cajun, quite tasty, but a bit too heavy. The accompanying fries for both the burger and chicken sandwiches were a bit too soggy and cool for my taste, so maybe -1 a point for that. The burger was actually 2 patties of tender Waygu beef with fixings (the sauce was very good), cheese, carmelized onions and those house made bread & butter pickles. The Shrimp Louie Salad and There's Salmon for Everyone Bowl were the stars at our table. The salad had plenty of medium-sized shrimp, each carefully halved and prepped so no work in consuming these; it also had plentiful avocado, egg, cucumbers, and croutons to round out a very fresh lettuce base. The Salmon Bowl (cute name) had a decent sized piece of salmon, roasted corn and black beans and adorned with a creamy avocado dollop. Both were very tasty! Hummingbird, I'm sorry it's been so long since we were in. In nicer weather we'll be back so that when we park four or five blocks away, we won't have to navigate remnants of snow and cold. read more

I enjoyed the food, the service from my waitress, and the atmosphere. However, I noticed that the printed receipt reflected the mathematically correct total, while the bill presented for signature increased the amount by two cents. When I asked about the discrepancy, I was told the systems sometimes differ by a few cents. The adjustment was made when I requested to pay the correct total, but the response suggested that questioning "only two cents" was unreasonable. My concern was never the amount; it was the principle. When a customer is shown one accurate total and then asked to authorize a higher one without explanation, it creates the appearance of taking money that was not part of the stated charge. If I may add my two cents as a former patron and frequent restaurant guest: trust matters in a dining experience. Even a few unexplained pennies raise a reasonable question--if this occurs repeatedly throughout the day, where do those extra cents go? A couple of cents from one guest, a few more from another, eventually add up. Transparency in billing prevents that concern. When a discrepancy is presented without a clear explanation and a patron is made to feel foolish for asking about it, it leaves a bad taste, regardless of how enjoyable the meal may have been. read more

We made a 5:30 PM reservation on Resy and arrived to a quiet restaurant with plenty of open tables, allowing us to choose our preferred seating. We were offered the Restaurant Week Prix Fixe Menu ($50 + add-ons), which had a fantastic selection. We started with the Crab & Artichoke Dip and the Shrimp Louie, both were excellent. For our mains, we opted for the Whole Branzino ($10 add-on) and the Lobster Lemon Linguine, and every dish was amazing. Our waiter was extremely helpful in guiding our choices. We took a chance on the Hummingbird the morning after our overnight stay at the Indigo Hotel in Alexandria, VA. We arrived about 10:30 AM to try their breakfast. We were greeted promptly and escorted to our table. There were only a handful of others in the entire restaurant. The host then left us with the menus to review. Of course, there were traditional standards of eggs, omelet, bacon, etc. They also had French Toast (I ordered), and a "Continental Breakfast" of yogurt parfait, toast, and "fresh" seasonal fruit (she ordered). The person who seated us came back and took our order. I had ordered coffee, and was told to walk over to the bar where I could serve myself. The server didn't offer to bring us water, so we had to ask for water. We were also told the juice at the bar was "not included." I took that as a hint. The food was brought out within a few minutes. From a distance, everything looked okay. However, the glistening of my french toast indicated that I was in for an oily mess which, unfortunately, I was correct. It was tolerable, but there was consistently building film of oil on my tongue that slowly developed that made the entire thing less appetizing after each bite. The bacon I ordered on the side was equally unappetizing and dry. Her parfait was actually rather good, but the side of "fresh fruit" was likely fresh several days ago. It had since become a translucent array of honey dew and cantaloupe that had lost any semblance of flavor long ago. We finished a bit after 11 AM. By that time, they had removed the coffee, and refills of our water weren't exactly offered. It was time to go. I received the bill that had been miscalculated and overcharged for the bacon I had ordered. The server promptly corrected this, and returned the bill. Upon review, I also found that a 20% gratuity was automatically added. I was stunned. Mostly because I didn't feel this server had done anything remotely outside of taking our order and bringing us the water we had to ask for. The food was brought out by someone else. Never once checked on us during the whole time. Crazy. So, in a nutshell, unless you are desperate for a meal and really in a pinch for time, there are far better venues within walking distance to have your breakfast at. Perhaps their lunch and dinner is an entirely different story, but our experience was certainly not worthy of a repeat visit despite the fact that we love the Indigo Hotel there. read more

Wonderful service, good food! I was in town visiting family during restaurant week so we decided to try somewhere new. The special included three courses for each person (appetizer, entree, & dessert). I went with the fried oysters for my appetizer, salmon bucatini (gluten free style) for my entree, and flourless chocolate cake to finish it off. My dad got the crab & corn fritters, meatloaf and lemon cake. We loved the appetizers and my pasta was very delicious. The meatloaf was just okay and the presentation was not the best. The flourless cake is apparently a restaurant week special and it good but nothing to write home about. The lemon cake was good but the presentation left much to be desired. Overall, the ambiance is nice, the servers are good and the food is decent so maybe I'd try it again. read more

The Hibiscus drink was thick and tart -- good but not my favorite. Secondly -- our particular Monday night did not have the advertised menu but a good deal menu. Appetizer/dinner/dessert for 40.00. A little disappointed that we didn't know- but onward to our choices. The appetizers-- fantastic. The Brie was my favorite - my husband had the artichoke dip. Honestly best part of the meal. My chicken was disappointing - but the salad's dressing was really good. My husband's salmon lemon linguine was the star main course. Not worth the price. I got a mocktail that tasted like medicine. My husband got the chicken and dumplings and it was truly terrible, no seasoning/flavor, the gnocchi tasted like it was frozen then de thawed and thrown in with the chicken. The menu said the shrimp in my salad was seasoned with old bay but I don't think it even had salt. There was the option to replace the dessert with a cocktail, but I opted for the dessert. Our table shared the appetizers and each one was delectable. The shrimps used for the shrimp cocktail were gigantic and there were huge clumps of crab meat in the dip. The tuna tartar had a lot more depth than it appeared at first as well. Following that was the main course and I got the lobster and crab pasta with shrimp. It was so good I almost couldn't finish it. For the dessert I got the brownie sundae and it was incredibly rich and balanced out by the freshness of the ice cream. I have to give a shout out to the waitress because she was on it. She refilled out stuff and brought the course and food out so fast we were barely waiting for anything. The restaurant is located inside the Indigo Hotel which wasn't so easy to find if I didn't ask the hotel staff when I arrived. The food was amazing! I had a lovely salad and the vinaigrette on it was just lovely! The grilled fish was wellllll seasoned from head to tail and I ate the whole thing in one sitting with a refreshing Diet Coke! The sauces that came with it was nice but the Ponzu I skipped but that's just my taste buds!
