I'd come here a couple of years ago and was not greeted and kept standing at the hostess station for 6-7 minutes, so I just left. Today, we were greeted quickly and warmly and shown to a table. My Dad had a huge burger, which he said was good. My sister had the Gumbo- I tasted it and it was delicious! My Caribbean chicken and shrimp would've been delicious, but the chicken was way way too salty! The shrimp and beans and rice were both good. I'm so glad I ordered the sauce on the side because it ratcheted up the salt level to briny. Our server was adequate. The dining room is in a sort of weird U-shaped to me, but and spaced to serve. The friendly Manager stopped by our table to give my little niece a toy, and check on our experience. Our food hadn't come yet, so I didn't share that I didn't enjoy my meal. Even though I didn't enjoy the dish I had, I probably come back to try the burger. read more

I visited for Mother's Day and unfortunately the experience was just okay. I ordered the spaghetti and the seasonal cocktail and ended up sending both back. The spaghetti had a curry taste that I personally didn't enjoy, and the cocktail was way too sweet for my liking. Our server was nice, but we didn't receive silverware until after our food had already been served, which was a little frustrating especially since the restaurant was not very crowded at the time. Ordered dinner to go. The shrimp tacos were outstanding but the accompanying rice was somewhat mushy and blah. The chimichurri sauce with the steak entree was very tasty; however, I ordered the steak cooked medium rare and received it well done, not a hint of pink inside. Yes, I understand that the meat likely continued to cook on the drive home, but I live only several blocks away so obviously the steak was over cooked to order when I received it. The hostess/waitress was very hospitable and the service was prompt. Not sure we'll return unless we dine in, $29 is too much to pay for an entree to go that wasn't prepared how it was ordered. read more

Delicious food with lots of options at a great price. Went for Sunday brunch. Also the sign and the website says open Sunday at but do they not. They open at 11. We were seated immediately when they opened at 11. There's lots of booths and tables. The noise level was great! Easily able to speak with my friend who I was having brunch with. Stopped by Fat Cat Kitchen for a casual bite, and I'm glad to report the experience was just as solid as the hype. Service was cool--laid-back but attentive enough to keep things flowing. I ordered the City Burger with sautéed mushrooms and onions, and whew... this was a good burger. Juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right so every bite felt intentional. The toppings were perfectly sautéed, adding that extra depth without overpowering the meat. The hand-cut fries deserve their own shout-out--crispy, golden, and delicious. You can always tell when fries are actually cut in-house, and these definitely passed the test. Fat Cat Kitchen is a great stop when you're craving a quality burger with no frills, just flavor. 3.5 star...nothing wrong but nothing special either. The food was just okay, not bad but not great. The same goes with their service. Our female server was efficient but curt. Fat City Kichen is tucked away in a shopping center. The sign for the restaurant is underneath of a vet clinic so I can see how it could be overlooked. When I walked in there was no one at the hostess stand. No one came for at least 3 minutes. I was sat near the kitchen so I could see the orders once they were ready. There are daily specials as well as a feature dinner for the month. My waiter did not say much nor explained the specials. I decided to order the chicken and waffles from the specials menu. My order came out pretty quickly considering the fact that I watched two plates sit for a while and my waiter looked at them several times. The waffles were light and fluffy. The chicken was good. I wish it came with an additional side. My waiter never came to check in once I received my meal but did come eventually once I finished my first glass of water. Will I be back? Questionable. Service is everything and for this small of a restaurant that's not that big I thought they could have done better. read more

City Kitchen is a nice casual place to grab dinner. It feels comfortable inside, with a bar to the left with additional seating at tables - and booths on the right side for non-bar dining. The food: Fried artichokes - looked interesting. They were crispy and a bit salty at the initial few bites. With the sauce, it was better. A good app. Pork chop - again, my first couple bites were a bit salty but the rest was flavorful, cooked perfectly juicy, and I really liked the favor the char gave it. The potatoes were ok and so were the veggies, but they were both unremarkable. Both could have used some seasoning so I just put pepper on them. The cheesecake was just ok and my least fave item of the night which is rare for me because I love desserts. All in all, I'd come back if I was in the area and wanted a hearty, casual meal. read more

Restaurant that prides itself on having signature dishes from all different parts of America The space is tucked away in a strip-mall and can be initially hard to spot Inside, the place does not look like anything special. The seats are somewhat run down and it actually doesn't have any windows! The selection was nice, however, for a weekday lunch, I was shocked that there are no lunch specials or lunch portions at a lower price. The salads started at $14 and were an additional eight if you added chicken or shrimp and even more for beef salmon. That price made me look at regular entrees that would cost less and feel a little more special. I ended up ordering a jerk chicken and shrimp plate over beans and rice. Most of the flavors were very good, though the chicken felt a little overdone and the beans and rice was a really sad miss. It was very gummy and flavorless, the rice was broken and clumped together. (We were recently in Costa Rica, so comparing this example of rice and beans to all the wonderful gallo pintos that we had there, it just felt yucky. I don't know why I ate it all, but I did. The accompaniments of mango chutney, coleslaw, and sauces were thankfully tasty. The shrimp was really good. My son loved his fries and burger. The kid's meal burger is just two sliders - glad we asked- so we ended up ordering a full adult meal and holding all of the yummy toppings. Felt like a waste for a kid that just wants a big juicy burger with cheese on it. My friend ordered the salad, and I watched her move several limp pieces of lettuce to the side. That's unacceptable in such an expensive salad! She also was surprised by the charge of a side of fries for the kid's meal that her daughter had. When she asked the waitress said that the pasta kid's meals don't come with a side of fries. I feel like that messaging needs to be much clearer in the kid's menu portion. Overall, I don't think I'll have a big desire to come back. The bill was pretty expensive for being a mom and son eating out on a weekday lunch (about $50 with tip). Upon arriving you assume this place is closed but it's not the front windows are tinted and the sign is below another but they are in fact open and they have brunch. It was hard for me to narrow down my selection as everything looks amazing from the pork chop meal, to the salmon with crab imperial, to the southern fried chicken. I opted for a sandwich and after thinking long and hard between the Milwaukee and the avocado crab melt I went with the Milwaukee. For my daughter I ordered the pasta with meat sauce. This place has set the bar high. My daughters noodles and meat sauce wasn't your typical basic tasteless sauce with noodles think bolognese with veggies, peppers and fresh Parmesan. So flavorful my daughter had to tell me to stop eating her food lol. My Milwaukee was tender, flavorful and filling. Now I want to try the other menu items. read more

Fresno chokes and shrimp and grits were just okay. They both had a similar crispy batter, so that part was good. The service was decent and quick. Prices were normal for the area and portions were good. I just didn't like my grits or the sour flavor of the artichoke. I had the shrimp poboy. It is not Louisiana-style. They use a soft sub roll instead of French bread. But the menu tells you that, so nobody is surprised. The sauce is flavorful and just right on spice. The shrimp are perfectly fried, just like on a poboy in Louisiana. And, the fried jalapeños are the perfect touch. Mild and not overwhelming, so they complement the shrimp instead of stealing the show. My wife had the Santa Monica chicken, which reminded us a little of Naples, Italy. The marinara was very simple, which really went well with the texture of the fettuccini. The chicken is very lightly dusted - really light - with flour, just enough to sautee it and keep it tender and moist. The fresh mozzarella, tangy tomatoes, sweet basil, and balsamic glaze really come together unexpectedly perfectly. Sometimes the toppings are too much. Not with this dish. The service was good, the food was tasty, the atmosphere chill, and the beer cold. And the prices are super fair. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

My sister and I went to Fat City Kitchen with the best intentions and an open mind. We had been there one time before and I ordered the wrong item (I knew it was a risk) and didn't love it. NOT the restaurant's fault - it was well made - I paid and vowed to return and order something more to my liking. We went to a show in Shirlington and had many options that we enjoyed, but wanted to go someplace with the potential of becoming our default - someplace closer to home. We were shown our table (no one was on that side of the restaurant -we were the first). I went to the restroom and there was water on our table upon my return. We decided what we wanted, and my sister went to the restroom. While she was gone, the server sat a couple behind us and a four top in the booth in front of me. While this was going on, the server never acknowledged me or made eye contact. She brought water for both tables - never acknowledging me. My sister returned, asking had I order our drinks and food... nope, l'm still not positive who our server is, no one has stopped by. When the four top was settling into their booth, I wondered if the server knew them because they were chatting about the storm and limbs falling - she even brought out her phone to show pictures. I'm still looking at her and wondering if she was in fact our server.  OK, here she comes... right past me to take the order of the couple behind me. She was less than a yard from me... I raised my hands and I'm sure I said something and she replied, "I got you. I got you. "Huh? Who is she talking to? Certainly, not a paying customer. I said, "We were here first and..." "I got you. I said I got you. I'm in a rotation and I'm only one person." The couple not only gave their drink orders, but appetizers (gumbo) and main course (my ears were ringing too much to hear). I looked at my sister who I knew was starving - we both were and said I'm livid - do you mind if we leave? Since we only had water, there was no bill to pay. On our way out we were expressing our displeasure to the hostess when the server stopped by to make her case and then gave up when I wasn't the one to hear her nonsense - especially, since she thought it was cool to interrupt a customer. On our way out, my sister told the hostess, "... and we won't be back." Whelp. She said what she said. Fat City Kitchen Owners/Managers: I don't need to tell you how razor thin margins are, especially in this climate. Folks are going out less often and have choices on where to spend their money. Even if all the tickets from the three tables were processed at the same time (still bad - we didn't come in at the same time) customers want to feel like they matter and want to be treated fairly. Your server needs to be educated on the ways of business and customer service. We ended up at Taste of Asia in the same shopping center. We'll go back. read more

Drew...If you go to Fat City Chicken I really hope Drew is your server. He is excellent in EVERY way! He was very thoughtful, attentive and really cared about the customers needs first and foremost. We took his recommendations and ordered 1 PoBoy with a side of mac n cheese and 1 City Burger with fries. We told him that we were sharing and then he immediately asked if we would like to have it cut in half. Other orders included 2 make your own pizzas and 2 kids spaghetti. We had a party of six and we were served quickly. Our drinks were always topped off and he kindly checked in on us often. The food tasted fabulous! The adults both loved their entrees! Sharing paid off big time! (However, I could have eaten a bowl of the mac n cheese and been a happy woman.) The kids were also delighted with their meals. I really appreciate it when employees take the time to make recommendations and it makes for a perfect meal experience! Everything was clean inside with walls adorned with well appointed decor. Good American bar food - get the Bronx Knox! The pillowy fluffy garlic knots are scrumptious and pipping hot! The Mushroom pizza was fun to try and tasted like a white pizza with mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and smoked gouda (which I requested to remove). The tomato didn't quite blend that well with the pizza and will substitute the tomato for spinach - next time! The kids menu has some good options and the cheese pizza is generous and surprisingly large , about 1/2 size of a normal pizza. It would be nice to see more vegetarian dishes on the menu. Overall, we enjoyed a nice meal with our friends and the staff was great! read more

So good! My job likes to go to this place for company lunches. It's actually really good and not as crowded as you would think for this part of Alexandria. Maybe it's a hidden gem. I like their menu and the variety depending on your mood. I highly recommend the wings and the pizza. I also tried the shrimp & grits recently. It was with fried shrimp which was different but good. The grits had a nice flavor and I liked the addition of the jalapeños for some heat. Excited to try some other menu items the next time I go. read more

Look for CK; not FCK. The 2 of us were here for lunch with 2 BFFs. My Blue Plate on the receipt (see photo) is for a toasted cheese sandwich, 3 or 4 cheeses with a lager. DELISH! The chicken sandwich was VG with a Peroni, both good. Service was good as it should have been since the place was nearly empty; more employees than guest when we arrived at about 12:30PM. The place is decently decorated and the ladies RR was very clean. I would like to try this place again. Our friends, who selected this place, said brunch is excellent. read more

We had a wonderful time trying this restaurant out! Their menu isn't too expensive (total of 6 entrees) but they do have pizza and burger options which give a little more variety. It is on the pricier side (half their entrees are underrated $25, the other half is over $30). We didn't know until we were seated but that week they had a 20% off Tuesday special. That would've been fantastic! What we got Kill Devil Hills Scallops & Pork Belly - 4* I feel like your mostly paying for the meat with this dish. The scallops all tasted fresh, the pork belly was a hit or miss on its consistency. I think only one of the five chunks has both fat and meat on it, the other chunks were either solidly fat or solidly meat. Not the end of the world as I just cut them smaller and paired them again. The pomegranate drizzle was an experience! I'm glad I tried it and I'm looking forward to my leftovers but I'm also fine trying something else next time. Boston Chops - 5* my partner loved this dish though wasn't a fan of the sauce it came with. I thought it was just alright but defer the rating to the one eating the meal. Strawberry Shortcake Cheesecake - 4* this was very yummy albeit on the smaller side and quite pricey ($9!) I originally thought I was worth trying until I found out the price... Stopped by with some friends for a late dinner. We started off with their Truffle Fries and the Lynchburg Quesadilla. Both were solid, but nothing mind blowing. For my entree I got the Boston Chop. The pork chop was still super juicy and tender as thick as it was. Great grill flavor that didn't even need the bourbon bbq sauce. Overall good food, especially for a place open later at night. We decided to give City Kitchen a try because of the Restaurant Week deal. $25 per person for 3 courses! Incredible value Everything was great but the Risotto was the best of it all. So creamy and flavorful. Really rich garlic flavor that wasn't too overpowering Pork chop was very juicy and tender. And the mashed potatoes were nice and buttery. Gumbo was also fantastic. I wish I could've gotten a whole bowl. The okra was cooked perfectly and wasn't slimy at all. Cheesecake was a perfect end to the meal read more

Stopped by for dinner one day with a few friends. We ordered the City Wings (New York Buffalo) and garlic-truffle fries to share. For my entree, I got the City Burger. The wings and fries were really good! They were sauced / seasoned well and meaty. The burger had a bourbon barrel glaze, melted pepper jack cheese, bacon, tomato, and fried onion strings with a spicy mustard on a brioche bun. The burger was good! The place is just meh. There were a couple things to like about the food, but overall it wasn't that great. The portions were reasonable. I had the Germantown Club where bread was maybe dunked in oil and the chicken breast was dry and bland. My wife had the beef burger and said it was tough as show leather. I had the garlic truffle fries for a mere 20% more which were ok, but had little to no garlic. The wife had just fries which were pretty much the same without the truffle flavor. One major misstep was their beer. For some reason they were all flat. I ordered an Aslin pale ale. Tried it, and the flavor was ok, but it was flat as a pancake. I asked if they could change it for another one. The waitress said sure and I asked for an old faithful yeungling. This too came out flat, but I didn't want to change it again so I stayed quiet. When we got the bill, I found out that I was charged $8 for the yeungling and $11.50 for the Aslin which I took one sip of and asked for them to change. I was already on the fence about the mediocre food, but since the wait staff was nice I was thinking I would have given 3 stars. But after the manager woman came in and charged me full price for one not so good flat beer and another flat and stale yeungling, 2 stars is all I can give. It's hidden and not really visible among the sign carnage on the building. It's in an unexpecting shopping area with the Picket St Home Depot at the other end of the parking lot. Ample parking. Chill environment. Great food. Salmon and Risotto is great. City Burger is top notch. Truffle fries are probably too much and just a fad for the truffle movement. Regular fries are actually better. Decided to actually eat outside for V day. Everyone made reservations except for us... No worries. FCK to the rescue. This is a great little spot in the shopping mall right next to the vet clinic. Guess what? Yep we needed a reservation... bar seating was available They had a little special menu for tonight ,not too shabby but I wasn't in the mood for anything on that. We did share an app from the VDay special though! Our sever was prompt and very helpful when I inquired about my entree. The Bar area was clean and cozy. Several TV's showing all the sports highlights and the music wasn't too loud and was a nice mix. The food: Calamari and fried shrimp basket was small but delicious. Not a Shareable size but flavorful and presented nicely. He had the Mahi with Swiss Chard and Couscous. The crab relish made the dish. I had the Springfield Mixing Bowl....yep! No foo foo pretty dish for me. Pizza! And it was absolutely amazing. The fresh veggies and the cheese pull....the sauce and swoon.Six hearty slices and the perfect thin crust from a stone oven. We finished with a thin slice of the VDay Strawberry Cheesecake again we shared because it's what we do. Not really a shareable portion but nicely presented for the holiday. Came for dinner with a friend, and we had a really nice time! The winter refresher was good, but the Mercator's Dream really knocked our socks off. We started with the shrimp and grits, which we dug into before we could get a picture. It was truly incredible, definitely a must-get. I had a really great dining experience at Fat City Kitchen. It was a first visit for me recently after spending time at a local play gym with my sisters and our kids. This place is kid friendly, has a great affordable menu, the staff is AMAZING - they feel like home and so were all of the other customers. Everyone was really sweet. My food was great and heat up well the next day. Give this place a try if you're looking for a chill spot to end the night or a dining experience with family I will be back.
