It is a crime and a shame that Barlow Whittier is closing, and around 30 people losing their jobs! This place and the people in it saved my loved one's life, and so many others! They have a high success rate helping people regain the ability to breathe on their own again after even prolonged ventilator use. Moreover, they do it caring for your family member as respectfully and diligently as humanly possible. To a person, everyone there truly cares about and shows up for the patients. The Respiratory unit staff charge nurse Berna or Berla is the worst human being I have ever encountered. Her ego doesn't allow her to listen oh but she will let you know she has been in charge as a charge nurse for 15 years! She will not call the doctor for any of your loved ones concerns and insists on making her own diagnosis as to why your loved one looks terrible after you return from a brief quick lunch break because you have to rush back to attend to your ill loved one. Rather than taking proper reporting procedures to the doctor or looking any further into your concerns. I will say this loud and I will say this once. Berna from PIH Respiratory Hospital in Whittier needs to be looked into. After I spoke to her supervisor she was asked to stay away from my loved one as she had given them too much insulin the 1st time, which can be a fatal mistake. When I came back from the cafeteria, she was in there again! My loved one sugar dropped so much that same night and I begged her to please call the doctor but she wouldn't listen to me! The next morning I got the call. Berna needs to denounce herself as she knows what type of human she is. I spoke to staff and they all know as well. Whittier Barlow is a safe place where you can trust that your loved one will be well supported. I highly recommend this hospital. I am once again commending the amazing staff at Whittier Barlow Respiratory Hospital. My daughter, Olivia Rose, was transferred back to Whittier Barlow in April of 2024 after a short hospitalization at UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital and UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. She previously spent two weeks at Whittier Barlow in November of 2023 after suffering respiratory failure at City of Hope. UCLA Hospital was ready to send us home after they concluded there was nothing else they could do for Olivia. Olivia needed physical therapy, but none of the rehabilitation institutes would accept her. Moreover, she was not in good shape to go home and the discharge plan did not allow for the type of support in the home that she required; therefore, we requested to go back to Whittier Barlow where we knew she would be well supported before going home. Our decision to return to Whittier Barlow Respiratory Hospital did not disappoint. The staff there continued to deliver outstanding care from the nurses and doctors to the amazing social worker and case manager. A big shout out to Bethany Jeffrey, the Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Yvette Geyen, the Licensed Vocational Nurse and Case Manager. Both Bethany and Yvette are the dynamic duo team with more knowledge and experience than any of the social workers and case managers we encountered at City of Hope, UCLA Ronald Reagan and UCLA Santa Monica. Bethany and Yvette set Olivia up for comprehensive support upon discharge. The home health companies that Bethany recommended proved fruitful. We landed with Avery Home Health and we have been supported with a day nurse from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 pm from Monday through Thursday. We have a night nurse on Fridays and the team at Avery Home Health are advocating for more support from our commercial insurance Anthem Blue Cross. Bethany gave us paperwork for applying for governmental support as well as a form to apply for a discount on our DWP bill. We are now getting a $35.00 a month discount on that bill due to running the oxygen concentrator and humidifier compressor machines 24/7. Yvette took it upon herself to help us out with medications after discharge even though that was not within her job description. Yvette made sure we had all the necessary supplies from the companies supplying items for Olivia's health. It has been a challenging time, but all the support we received from Whittier Barlow Respiratory Hospital has helped the transition. I am grateful to nurses Holly, Kennedy, Melissa, Chantal, and Hema who all helped to train me on caring for Olivia at home. I know I missed some of the sweet nurses by name so please forgive me, you know who you are! The physical therapist, Ara, was phenomenal. Olivia has had many physical therapists and he is at the top! Shelby, the occupational therapist was pretty terrific too. Pablo was a fantastic respiratory therapist. We miss his warm and gentle spirit. Nikki, the speech therapist, was a godsend. Nikki helped to calm Olivia's anxious heart over so many issues. She has even been helpful while Olivia has been home as she interfaces with our home health speech therapist to fill in all the gaps in Olivia's journey. My brother-in-law was transferred to Barlow from another hospital and the experience was like night and day. Besides being thorough and proactive, the staff is incredibly nice - especially the nurses and social/case workers. After being at another hospital for 50 days because of covid my husband needed to be transferred to a facility where they would be able to help him with his recovery, and we were so blessed to have one of his Doctors recommend Barlow to us, immediately I begin to do some research on Barlow and everything sounded great and was exactly what we were looking for. But I have to say Barlow has far exceeded our expectations, the care and treatment my husband has received from the entire staff from day 1 has been beyond excellent. My husband suffered from severe anxiety and was very demanding with his nurses and his therapists, everyone was very patient with him and always treated him with respect and compassion they knew exactly how to help him and they made sure he was comfortable, for us knowing that he was under the care of nurses and therapists that were so caring and compassionate was so important. Within days we saw a big improvement in his health, he was now more verbal, He was able to let us know how grateful he was for the care he was receiving and he would tell us how everyone was very nice to him. Yesterday I received a heart warming call from Julia the PR Director at Barlow Respiratory Hospital. Not only did she take the time to call and thank me for my commendable views on the care my brother is receiving at Barlow, she also took the time to get to know me, my brother's life as a child, his history, activities and hobbies before his unfortunate cardiac arrest that resulted in him being on a tracheal respirator. Since my brother is unable to speak, it means so much to my mother and I that the staff wants to get to know more about the man they're caring for. The correspondence with the nurses and doctors I receive on a daily bases regarding my brothers care goes beyond any hospital I've ever been involved with, including our family hospitals back east in Boston. Bethany in social services who's assistance in my helping me with my brothers hopeful future has been a blessing of guidance since this is the 1st time in my life I've had to once again be the big sister and speak in my brothers behalf in decisions to ensure further care for my brother when he leaves Barlow. The enduring experience of the doctors that did ween my brother off his tracheal respirator is the miracle my Mom and I were praying for. Though my brother still has a long road of hopeful rehabilitation ahead of him in, right now I can't be anymore grateful, blessed and forever thankful for the care he is receiving from the staff. This is probably the best hospital in the whole world! Excellent service! My father stayed in this hospital for a month after being treated in ICU in another hospital. Mani made us feel welcomed immediately and played a big role in keeping my dad stable by monitoring his heart and breathing closely . I am giving this hospital and their amazing NURSES, RTs PTs and DOCTORS 5 STARS. They provided excellent care to my father. There were so many kind, compassionate and attentive nurses. Nurse Phoebe, Ashley, Tami, Shantel, Embay And there are some more. All of them were so great. Thank you to all that helped his stay be the best that it can be. Bethany is an amazing social worker who cares deeply about her clients. She goes above and beyond to assure the appropriate services are rendered. The front desk worker, Manny, was incredibly helpful and caring towards our grandfather throughout our experience there. The therapists were amazing and did everything they could to aid my grandfather back to health. It was an extremely clean facility and we could not be happier with everyone there. The nurses and CNAs were especially caring towards my grandfather. Their goal was to give him a great experience and help him become healthy again, and they did just that. Should you or a relative need a respiratory hospital, Barlow is the best place for treatment. My husband was in the ICU of a local medical center and required a ventilator to breathe. He needed advance care to help regain use of his lungs and I wanted to be sure he was treated at a facility which had the best possible outcomes. After much research, I did my darndest to make sure he would be transferred to Barlow and I have not had one second of regret. My husband was a "hot mess" when he was admitted to Barlow Respiratory Hospital, including bacterial infections and a previously untreated wound, all of which needed to be addressed before his lungs could start their journey back to health. In short order the infectious disease specialist and wound specialist took care of these setbacks and the respiratory therapists were waiting to start their work. The staff at Barlow will not give up on a patient - my husband is a quadriplegic (which adds another fly to the ointment) and had a couple of starts and stops in his ventilator "weaning". Each time, the respiratory therapy staff restarted the process and today he is strong enough to breathe 12+ hours per day without the ventilator and increasing every day!!! In addition to the doctors and respiratory staff, I must send a huge shout out to the nursing staff. They provide wonderful care to my husband and we are very impressed with their skills and commitment to patient care. Communication in the age of COVID-19 is difficult. I can't be at the hospital asking questions, but the nurses are terrific. When I, or my daughter, call for an update, usually we are able to speak with a nurse immediately. In the rare instances when my husband's nurse for the day is unavailable at that moment, we always receive a call back in a timely manner. Always. Additionally, we are able to speak with my husband during the day and evening via FaceTime (or WhatsApp for non Apple users). We never feel as if we are interrupting and everyone is courteous, helpful and genuinely pleasant to deal with. I'm sorry that I do not mention staff by name but I don't want to leave anyone out as all have been phenomenal!!! My husband also receives occupational and physical therapy. As I mentioned, he is a quadriplegic. One day last week I received an unexpected FaceTIme from his p/t. My husband was able to lift his legs a bit (first time on his own!) and the p/t thought my husband might want to FaceTime me to celebrate. Best call ever! Finally, I would be remiss if I did not send kudos to Bethany, the Social Worker with whom I deal regularly on everything from disability paperwork to my husband's emotions. She is very accessible and on top of the needs of both the patient and family members. When Bethany sensed I was overwhelmed by my husband's issues, she set up a zoom meeting for my daughter and me so that we could "meet" the staff treating my husband and ask any questions on his status and treatment plan. When I had additional questions following the meeting, Bethany followed up with the appropriate staff members. She cares and goes "above and beyond"! My father was at this facility recovering from the horrible Covid aftermath. Every single Barlow Whittier employee my father, my family, and I interacted with was excellent. Doctors, nurses, nurses aide, case and social workers were nothing less than amazing. Even the maintenance crew was exceptional. My dad was hospitalized for Sepsis recently at Barlow for 2 weeks. He went in with no ability to walk, but has been discharged with the ability to walk with a cane. His recovery was due to the loving care of the Barlow staff, who went out of their ways to make his rehabilitation process comfortable and fun-filled. My daughter and I were so grateful one afternoon to find him watching his favorite tennis matches in the hall way! Thank you, everyone, for your compassionate care and your professional skills to help him regain his strengths and rejuvenate his spirit to fight on. His battle with blood cancer is not over yet, but we know he will keep fighting. Overdue but much needed review- stay here was from December 20' My family selected this location after my partner was transferred over from an ICU. COVID time made this experience very difficult due to not being allowed visit my love one. Despite the uncertainty and doing our do diligence of selecting the right respiratory location, I believe we made the correct choice. He was successfully wean off the ventilator ten days after his arrival (every case is different and I was explained that when I spoke to their hospital rep-Anne). My family called the facility everyday for close to a whole month while my partner was in there to get updates on his health/progress. Every call was answered with empathy, respect and acknowledgement. His nurses, in particularly, Sue was amazing! She was so kind, understanding and would set up facetime calls in order to connect with my partner. There was an instance my partner was having a panic attack and Sue was kind enough to call me in order to speak with him. I was able to connect with his PT, OT and Speech all via FaceTime (due to Covid/no visitors) and they would answer my calls and if I didn't get a chance to speak with them, they would call back. Shelby (PT) was so sweet, knowledgeable and reassuring, Phyllis was also great and answered my questions in regards to how many hours of services a week/duration. Barlow also assigned us a case manager, Bethanie J., she was AMAZING!  She was very knowledgeable, helpful and resourceful, she helped set up team meetings and connected me with a Medical Rep (Mrs. Thomas- an angel sent on earth). Bethany is a true advocate and we are forever grateful for all her help and time she devoted to my partners case. Thank you to all the nurses like Juanito, Kevin, Anita, and Jake and Dr. Wu and the Infectious Disease Doctor and all the therapist and pulmonology team! I'm so happy we brought my daughter to Barlow from UCLA Ronald Reagan ICU after her stroke. She had a trach and was on a ventilator. The respiratory therapists at this location were fantastic and they explained everything they were doing and why. She was weaned off in a month. I can't thank them enough for the care they gave her. This place has too many young inexperience nurses!! And too many enabling charge nurses, particularly NOEMI! My family member was at this hospital. Now, in the beginning of her stay they did a good job in weaning her off of the ventilator, but after that, they forgot to pay attention to other body parts of her body; they neglected to elevate her feet, causing her foot to become black and she ended up having a blood clot in her left foot, not because the nurses or Drs. observed this, but because we complained about her feet, it was then that they scanned her feet to find out she had a blood clot, blood clots can kill a patient, its very dangerous. Now, when talking to the Charge Nurse Noemi, she said there was nothing that could be done, when in reality, she should have elevated her feet and check to see why her feet began to turn black, which I believe also contributed in the blood clot in her other foot. Noemi is very rude and teaches her crew of young inexperienced nurses to be just as rude and retaliatory, in that, if the patients family members aren't nice to the nurses they retaliate by being rude and neglecting the patients. My fam member was also transferred with MASD, which is the new term for moist bed sores in her groin area, chest area and abs, which I was told about this by the wound care nurse at the new rehab facility. So I wouldn't recommend this place to my enemy!! read more

"Super Great and Amazing" My family is really, really happy with this hospital and with everyone taking care of my dad. We've been in hospitals for a long time and with other family members we've seen some bad situations but at Barlow, it's better. The whole team is amazing. To begin with, Bethany, Social Worker, is amazing! She is always on point and makes sure we are comfortable. She is on top of her job and she's just super great! The RNs, I can't remember everyone's name, but they are all really helpful. The charge nurses in particular. If you have a question, they find the answers and they help. Right away. And Jake, oh my gosh! He's made our stay here so comfortable for all of our family. I feel like we're in a hotel instead of a hospital. And Ron and all of the RNs ... they are taking good care of my dad and the whole family. The CNAs are so amazing and so quick! They clean my dad and they take such good care of him. He doesn't have to wait at all. It was really nice to have a family meeting where we had the whole team together to talk about what my dad needs. It was the first time we've had that experience at a hospital and it was amazing. Our whole family, we are so grateful. We feel like everyone at Barlow really cares. My mother was transferred from another hospital and admitted into this hospital around 10:00 PM on 12/22/2016. The moment we arrived, we were greeted by the RN and sensed immediately the warm and caring spirit of the entire team there. I noticed a poster on the wall next to the nursing station: "Through these doors walk the best nurses in the world" - Florence Nightingale. "How dare they posted it unless they truly are", I said to myself. As days went by, we got to see closely the performances and actions of both day and night nursing teams. Certainly and no doubt they were the "best nurses in the world." My mother received the best care anyone could wish for. We, the family members were treated so courteously, kindly and professionally. Amazingly they supported one another as a true team that I had never seen in other hospitals. During the most critical times, the entire team rendered their hands to us. You walk into Whittier Presbyterian Hospital and you say ..wow what a nice hospital. Then you walk into This place and say to your self wow what a dump. The ac works horrible. The staff is overwhelmed... But if you look at the other options out there this is the best of the so so places. Its hard to believe how hard it is to find decent care for our parents... read more
