My parents have been utilizing PIH Hospital for decades, and I can say this hospital has always taken the best care of them. Doctors, nurses and surgeons are all very knowledgable, comforting, educating and attentive with the sense of urgency level needed for all sorts of conditions we have been fortunate to have had corrected there! Conditions are consistantly reviewed and family imput is requested and welcomed! I highly recommend this hospital for all emergency and non-emergency conditions! Thought I would do a review on the Emergency staff at Presbyterian Whittier. Understand any business is busy this is medical and still a business, that being said my wife Has some on going issues that flair up at times the ER staff has never failed us in time we have Visited. There is a wait depending on the amount of people and their medical issues. Some staff is very stern And into getting the info on diagnosis others are more understanding and communicative and Fill in the blanks If your a re occurring patient as we have been they know the routing blood pressure how intense the pain, Or other info that will make helping get you seen by a doctor or practitioner. The ER nurse staff are on the Ball some aren't social butterfly's more like worker bees. Get the info draw the blood yet still make you Comfortable. Some nurses will socialize get the info and listen to your chatter. Sometimes when we are coming in for sickness or injury we are not understanding that the nursing staff is the Core of getting you better and well again. Some doctors are the same way when it comes to communication. Sometimes doctors are to the point and compassion is not there they are doing their job to help you. And their are doctors that give you the right of way to give all the info then they do their job check the heart lungs And other things, My wife and I agree that the ER staff here at Presbyterian Whittier deserve a little recognition for there ongoing Caring and work ethics in all types of issues. Also the hospital staff of nurses I give a shout out too as they have been Great and helpful, Some of the resident doctors do need a little bed side manor training. Some doctors treat you More like a car and they are mechanics. But most treat you as a human in need even older patients I as a patient my self will always recommend this hospital read more

Severe Neglect & Corporate Intimidation of a Transplant PatientI am an unhoused heart transplant patient on active chemotherapy for organ rejection. My immune system is completely wiped out. PIH Health Whittier Hospital severely violated California Homeless Discharge Law (SB 1152) and federal EMTALA laws during my care.First, they dumped me at a shared-dormitory respite facility (Mission Hills Recup Care) with 4 roommates--a lethal infection risk for an immunosuppressed patient. When I returned to the ER in crisis, the charge nurse tried to deny my EMTALA rights, forcing me to sit in a packed, infectious public waiting room for hours.Once finally admitted to Room 3124, PIH Social Work and Nursing Administration actively ambushed, humiliated, and gaslit me in front of a hospital chaplain. They claimed I was "the problem" for refusing a shared dorm and a 10-day motel stay in Wilmington. Even the attending physician shockingly claimed a motel is adequate care for an active organ rejection patient on chemo.This hospital used corporate intimidation to force a highly vulnerable patient into life-threatening environments. I have filed a formal emergency complaint with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Avoid this facility if you value your life. Any lawyers want to help me im willing to litigate their paychecks deserve to feel what I did. read more

120,000 dollars for open heart surgery, 1.5 months in the hospital, and then I have to also pay for parking? Why can't you have free parking? You really shouldn't be nickel and diming us on parking. Absolutely ridiculous. Edit to include the MD on call when I was discharged. Her name is BETSY STILLS. Let that sink in. She is horrible. Cold as ice. That is why they chose her as a discharge doctor. She will not give an inch. She will not ever say yes. She will not care. Betsy Stills doesn't give a shit about other people, and goes out of her way to speed you out the door. I was incapable of showering myself and having been in a room for over a week, needed one, but they wouldn't allow me a shower. Finally, upon discharge, they did allow one, but I had to have 3 people help me, keeping an eye on my every move. Nevermind that I am of normal weight, build and can move perfectly well on my own. Made absolutely no sense. But I am fairly attractive and got a kick out of the nurses reaction. read more

I am new to the Whittier area and I figured that this Hospital was the best in the area. WRONG!!! My first visit was in February and the doctor and nurse were nice but when it got to the end of the shift, the mood changed! I wanted to have my x-ray read and all the doctor said was everything is okay and have a good evening. I wasn't going to go back but I needed to go again 2 weeks ago and Dr Michael Lee was very very rude! He asked me why was I living in the area and where I came from and why didn't I stay there. I was floored! Then he proceeds to state that I had been there in February and was given morphine for pain. I told him I am not here for morphine and I have medication for my pain now, I am here for congestive heart failure. He gave me a double dose of lasix and then sent me home after I filled up three canisters of urine at 3600 cc. I did not appreciate his bedside manner and they kept changing my nurse. It wasn't even that crowded when I went. I do not think that I will be going back to PIH for care; at least the ER. read more

Personally, I've never stayed here. But I've been with 3 of my grandparents at their late stages in life when they have been admitted time after time here. All of the staff, nurses and doctors have been pleasant and caring. The hospital is easy to park and find your way around. Parking is free and there are several lots all around the buildings. There is also valet (not free) which is very convenient. There are several nurses that have made my Grandma feel so completely welcome and at home... she has fallen in love with them. One in particular is Lawrence, he even came from a different ward to visit her because he knew she was back for a stay. So sweet. I wish I could remember all of the names..... thank you for making us all feel more comfortable with leaving our loved ones in your care. The Emergency Room is a different story, it is cramped and slow. But once you get in a room the uncomfortable memories of the ER melt away and you are treated with kindness and love. Let's face it, no hospital is fun or enjoyable, but PIH comes pretty darn close... and have you tasted those cookies in the little shop?? Yowza! Thank you PIH for being such a caring place to be. I had a gastrointestinal procedure at PIH's Gastrointestinal Department. They staff there was so courteous and professional. Dr. Shindel, and Nurses Lilly, Victoria, Jenny and others, made an anxious experience so pleasurable. They explained pre-op and post-op instructions, that were easy and simple to follow. The operation usually lasts 3 to 4 hours, but I was in and out of there in 2 1/2 hours! The competent and knowledgeable PIH Staff were great! I would highly recommend them for any gastrointestinal issues that you may have! read more

My son was injured and needed a form filled out with which would say when he was able to return to work, disability papers were also given for MD. He was told it would take 10 days yet it's been over 3 weeks and supposedly Dr is not in every time he calls to follow up. My son has not been able to pay his bills and it's been close to 2 months. I do plan to go elsewhere since this incident. Don't want to be caught up in this situation should another injury happen to him or me. Guess since this doctor is getting paid he doesn't care if anyone else is or not. read more

Everything went so well with lots of help from there labor and delivery staff . Nurse Kris was so great to me she's a boss b**** she knows exactly what she's doing she's such a boss a her job . Zero Stars. Do NOT take your loved ones to this "hospital." This hospital was beyond negligent in understaffing their ICU with only two nurses on the floor. The nurse that was assigned to my dad showed up an hour after calling for help and caused his blood pressure to spike dangerously high and then over medicate and drop dangerously low, which caused an irreparable stroke. They then proceeded to try to drug off my dad under the guise of "comfort-care." They were very clear that if they were a teaching hospital, they could and would do more. They then sent my dad home with the wrong medication in his IV, which killed him en route from the hospital to my parents home. Do NOT take your loved ones to this "hospital." They state that they are Geriatric Specialists, but from my experience, their specialty is in killing off their patients with reckless neglect. read more

How to ensure dissatisfaction: 1) schedule a procedure two months in advance 2) follow instructions and show up for the procedure 3) receive a bill indicating that you will be charged $500+ over what was expected because *they* selected a OUT OF PLAN provider WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR AUTHORIZATION and have them decide that you need to pick up the financial slack for THEIR CHOICE. 4) call their billing office multiple times - never get a live human to answer 5) listen to an interminable outgoing message in order to leave a message only to be told that THE MAIL BOX IS FULL 6) send an email and receive no response 7) receive a notice that you will be sent to collections if you do not respond - despite their inability to make contact possible and their complete lack of responsiveness read more

Brought my mother that had a fall.Was welcomed so nicely my car was parked for me and a wheelchair waiting .This Hospital has got to be oNe of the best I have ever been to.Valet parking wheelchair waiting for mom.Registration simple & easy.Atmosphere in waiting room calm and clean .Didn't smell!!!!Plenty of room for the other sick people.Wait time only 40 minutes.Doctor was very nice and professional.Total wait time and seen time was 41/2 hours .Excellent this Hospital has every detail down perfectly.Highly recommended !!!! read more

Once again this hospital has the worst nurses. They cannot do anything or know anything. They need doctor's instruction on every dawn thing, even letting patient take a shower or shave. What kind of idiot need to ask someone to help their patients take a shower. Whats next ? Need to ask someone permission to take a dump too ??? These staffs are the worst here. I've been to other hospitals and they are so much better. They know exactly what to do and how to do it. And people here seem to be overworked. FIVE AND A HALF HOURS AT THE EMERGENCY ROOM! I'm writing this as my phone battery dies due to the long, long wait in the emergency room. The staff is polite but they are either slow or there is not enough of them. There has not been a line of ambulances coming in to justify a FIVE AND A HALF HOUR WAIT! Neither have I seen any critically sick or injured people come through the door I'm here with my daughter who was referred to the emergency room from a PIH Urgent Care facility. I wasn't expecting this to be a short trip but five and a half hours for a visit to an emergency room on a Monday night is not acceptable. The staff didn't even come by to offer excuses until after four and a half hours and that was to say the wait would be longer, due to their shift change. I'm sitting here thinking it may time to move my family to a health care provider that provides better service. How good can a hospital be that can't adequately staff their facility? If they are cutting corners on staff, would it be unreasonable to think they are cutting corners in other areas? 1st there is check in and then you wait. 2nd there is Triage and then you wait. 3rd there is a treatment room and wait. 4th a PA tells you what the nurse has already told you and you wait for the paperwork. Really poor service, taking 5 1/2 hours at the hospital ER, not including the time at the PIH Urgent Care. Bad medical service is partially responsible for people starting to think Medicare for all is a good idea. The administrators at PIH need to get a clue. I don't have Kaiser Insurance so I can avoid what is happening to my family right now. If the ER is staffed correctly and they can't offer acceptable service, maybe their facility isn't large enough, but you can bet their bills and profits will continue to be large. If it was a busy night, they could offer an estimate of when to return, so people would have the option of waiting at home or use the pager and text system like restaurants have adopted. Having people wait in the ER for four and a half hours after in-take is just poor service. This isn't brain surgery PIH. read more

Specifically emergency room..I accidentally combined 2 meds I didn't know you're not supposed to combine lol I was sooo sick every symptom you can imagine. The front desk took one look at me and took me right in (even tho there was a full house of people who looked pretty damn healthy). They took such good care of me from the admitting nurse to the X-ray tech they were all so attentive and non judgmental. The dr didn't even make me feel like an idiot for intoxicating myself on accident lol the male nurse even brought me a pillow! Do you know how hard it is to get a pillow in an emergency room??! Not to mention a fresh blanket straight from the dryer since he saw me shivering. All and all they took great care of me and I was out and back to normal in just a few hours. This place is not like it use to be your wait at the lobby could be 4 hours then another 2 inside they have it bad coordinated plus if they feel your sickness is not that bad they take other folks first. You can see 2, 3 bash of people come in. I think Whittier Hospital its still alot better than this Big Hospital that is orginized like a County Hospital sad for those older folks with lots of pain!!!! read more

I brought my neighbor to this hospital the service was horrible the took long doctor seemed like he didn't really care he was un the room for 3 min then left didnt return till 6 hours later I was asking for a blanket cuz it was cold I had to tell the nurses 3 time horrible service next time I'll go to whittier off colima. read more

This is a very nice community hospital in Whittier. Everyone here is nice and attentive. Whenever they see anyone wandering the hallways looking lost, a staff member will always offer to help guide you to the right direction. They have free valet parking out in the front near the fountain, but not sure if they still offer valet anymore. I know there are some parts of the hospital that is undergoing renovation, but I can imagine how wondeful this place will be once they are done. Overall, just a nice community hospital filled with helpful "patient first" minded staff. read more

last night was packed and horrible, I waited which seemed like forever for a room and waited even longer in the room for the doctor that was not even around or to be found. I wondered if i was forgotten. I peaked out my door and no nurses were in sight or at the desk . I wondered if they all went to lunch together at 11:30 pm?? Just then they came in , one by one . Sat down and started talking about how their relationships were doing , what kind of car they had and were paying for and how much they did not like the one they were married to . UNPROFESSIONAL . Not once did they check in on me and ask if i was okay or if i was even alive . I got up and left after trying to get someones attention by yawing loudly or pretend coughing. This hospital says they care about patients and even when a family seeks to comply with policy and communicate with staff for an exception granted for an end-of-life visitations, anyone can decide to change what they communicated to you without notifying you. We were seeking to send our family members 2 at a time and security was called on us, we stepped outside and then they came out to collect our visitor badges. We waited out in the rain and cold and then when one person asked if they may use the lobby restroom, they were denied. My father is dying and they were harassing each family member when they were switching in the front, to make sure only 2 at a time were inside. They were cruel and bullied us, even as we complied with every request! Drive somewhere else - there are a couple wonderful nurses but much of the care was very poor and information was not transferred between staff. Avoid this hospital!!! read more

Saturday Feb. 22--wife limped in to the EMERGENCY ROOM and was time-stamped in at the desk @ 6:01 a.m. By 6:15 a.m. she was in an exam room, in a gown. RN got things started, followed by an "orderly" I guess, then the veteran (since 1987) Pres ER physician Dr. Jarema, he of the flowing golden locks and imaginative mustache. The problem, severe front side pain, was first handled with a surprise does of morphine! Then blood work, urine and CT scan.....determined to be an infection and she got a bon voyage 30-minute antibiotic drip...and we were out of there by 8:45 a.m. Me and the Good Doc swapped stories about the iconic ER there, he proud of his tenure since 1987, me telling him our boys born at Pres in the 1970s and spent many ER visits there with them the same decade. 60 ER rooms now, he said, back in the 80s 9 beds in a bay with some curtains. Incoming shift RN--fabulously professional-- took over near the end. PIH has got its sutures together folks....I also spent an outstanding 2 days getting a hip replacement in December. First class--I don't think the surrounding community fully realizes the gold standard we have for medical services in PIH. read more

I recently had a procedure done in the out patient G.l . Department and I have had it done before many timer due to my swallowing issues , but this time the tech Jack was not here, I sure miss him and he made my experience really a great one and most part of it why come here was because of him , he was just great with his attitude and attention to me . I asked but nobody here knew what happened to him , I think I will still come here but hope me and my family see Jack again read more

I was at PIH this morning due to a horrible night of feeling sick. My nurse John was the best nurse I've ever had there. I love this hospital and the staff overall, but John really stands out. He made sure I felt better and attended me in a very caring way. He came every few minutes to check in me and make sure my uncontrollable nausea was under control and my stomach was feeling better. I left home glad to have had an amazing nurse like John. read more

My girlfriend and I got here at 0730am and still have not been seen, the time is now 11:00am ... when we got here it was us, and another patient waiting.. there are now over 40 people in the ER waiting room and people are still coming in.. terrible hospital!!! read more

lets just start this off by saying if i could give them 100 negative stars i would!!!! do not take patients here!!!!! they will not let the patient fight they will let them just die!! they hire dr's that have no ethics, get grudges w the fam and take it out on the patient that they are ethically supposed to be taking care of. u need to watch out bringing someone to the er or the icu!! the er just kicked out a man w cancer that was dealing w an infection and had to be admitted 2 days later, then when he was admitted he was already in a deteriorated state and was not supposed to be fed by mouth and the nurses aid didnt bother to read the dam report and my father choked on the regular food and turned into aspirated pneumonia, from there had to be transferred to icu. from there the icu internist spoke to my mother and i in a horrible fashion. the icu dr proceeded to stare me down 2 days later and i had to address it with him and he got pissed and said "i dont need this shit", and just left the room. 2 hours later the dr proceeded to transfer my father out of icu when he was not ready to get back at me and when we ledt the icu thr dr had the dam nerve to say "your dad is not going to get any better" 35 minutes my father was coded and rushed back to icu, dr got his wish. now on a ethic standpoint i can no longer trust pih, thr dr's and caremore, i asked for a second opinion and to have my father transferred to another hospital which the dr denied, really its out right to get a second opinion!!! now my father is on life support from their carelessness, the grudges the dr held, and their lack of knowledge and medical support!!! i got loud with them like they did with us and i had the police called on me???? they think they are gods and they can talk how they want to people, but the min you get frustrated they call the police!!!!! please please do not take anyone here if u want your loved one to be treated properly and want them to survive!!!!! you better believe i have my attorney about to sue them for malpractice!!!! read more

In May of 2015, I drove all the way across town to UCLA and got excellent medical care; 3 days in the hospital. Over nearly 3 decades, I got some good and some awful medical care at PIH. The nurses were ALWAYS excellent. During one hospitalization at PIH, the pharmacy took all my supplements and some compounded prescription drugs that I had brought from home. They made some lame excuse that they couldn't let them me use any of them. Pure hog wash. During another hospitalization, they told me I was "admitted" but it turned out to be just another holding pen of the ER. They billed me an extra $1000 because my insurance didn't cover that. I wrote a complaint to the head guy explaining that no one had seen me for 8 hours and other serious issues. A senior VP answered with a laughable form letter that failed to address any of my legitimate complaints. I refused to pay them and only wished I could have stopped my insurance company from paying them, too. Close friends of mine had similar bad experiences there over the years. Go somewhere else. read more
