We were trying to decide where to go for lunch and I said I feel like a really good pizza. My wife said, "guess we're going to Barnaby's today. 128 miles later (about 70-80 miles less than going to a Chicago area location or other great Chicago pizza place) we walked in to Barnaby's and placed our order. Nothing at all (except perhaps remodeled bathrooms) has changed at this (and probably all Barnaby locations) since I started enjoying their pizza in the early 1970's. You still order at the counter, get your drinks or soda at the bar and wait until your number is called. Our pizza was once again masterfully prepared and reminded me why I am willing to drive so far for good pizza. Wonderful crust, great sauce and perfect ingredients. We purposely left a few pieces so we could snack tonight. This is a perfect Chicago run without going to Chicago. A mile or so up the road is a Portillo's where we also stopped and bought a few pounds of Italian Beef so we won't be without this winter. But once again, this review is about Barnaby's. I wanted to like this place to badly! I will always give credit where credit is do, Barnabys Mishawaka was a very cool pizza place with an old world pub interior. The decor and aesthetic is a little confusing as it gives off a feeling of 1983 German sausage polka fest lol. Very cool nostalgic feel non the less. We were with o ok2 couples, so we ordered apps to share. You have to write your order on paper given to you at the table, and they call on a.microphome for you pick up the orders as ready. We ordered a 10" sausage and mushroom pizza, mozzarella sticks and zucchini ( ended up be sold out). We also got chili with shredded cheese to try as it was advertised several places in the restaurant. My hubby ordered a big cheeseburger as well. The pizza was underwhelming at best. Partly was the bland crust and sauce, the topping were generous and fresh, but the cornmeal bottom killed it for me. I would not order again. The mozzarella sticks were standard frozen mozzarella sticks fried and hot. They were generous with quantity! Everyone got at least one or more. The chili was not warm enough, my cheese never melted. I should have returned it to the kitchen but, at that point I was just over this particular night out. I debated on two stars because of the chili temperature, however I know that things happen. The frozen mozzarella sticks, and pizza that was mediocre ( partially a personal preference of no cornmeal) and general ambience is where my ratingis are focused on. Overall, I can see why people come to this restaurant, it has a long standing seat in Mishawaka/south Bend. With that being said, I will most likely not return. read more

I hadn't been to the Barnaby's on Grape Road in over 40 years. I didn't remember the pizza as being bad, so when my husband's nephew suggested going there for a family dinner, I was ok with the choice. First, there were 12 of us and this place has nothing but booths making conversation difficult. Ordering was confusing because you're supposed to fill out a form and then bring it up to the counter. We didn't have a form at our table, so we were lost until my sister-in-law showed up and went up to counter and got the forms. We got two large pizzas. The base price is $24.55, and toppings were $1.35 each. We paid a total of $56.87 (including tax) for a pepperoni pizza and pepperoni and sausage pizza. Drinks for 4 was another $11 and didn't include refills. So we spent nearly $70 for mediocre pizza at best and drinks with no refills. About the pizza, because that's what we were there for, it was the second worst I've ever had. The sauce and toppings were fine, but the crust was not your normal hand tossed yeast dough. It was some sort of machine made crust that was crimped like the pre-made pie crusts you get from the frozen food section at the grocery store. It seemed stale and tasteless. The one bright spot was the young man behind the drink counter. I think his name is Gabino? He was personable and spoke with each person who went up to get drinks. We must have said our granddaughter's name enough that he said goodbye to her as we were leaving. However much he is paid, it's not enough. He deserves more for turning what was an otherwise disappointing experience into something somewhat enjoyable. read more

The staff expect you to know the secret South Bend ways on instinct, so be prepared to fumble around and have them giving you WTF looks the whole time. So awesome to visit this Barnaby's I was traveling here for work. I had a big pizza and some appetizers. The crust was so big and puffy bigger than I'm used to at the old Barnaby's in Des Plaines went through my whole life loved it. This is a great experience being out of state getting the best pizza in the world. In my opinion it was delicious. I loved it great atmosphere great vibe inside. It was busy, but I still got my food in a reasonable time And it was delicious and hot and it was the Cubs playoffs when they won the World Series back in 2016. Called the manager (who escalated to owner) would not issue refund -- said I would have to bring the bottles and the pizza back into the store as proof for a 'replacement'. Came in for the second time as a group of family . Was told not to put the dirty plates on the already sticky dirty tables bc they were clean and that the front girl would take them .we order a lot of food and was making room. Not sure who he was he does the bar and runs foods . MEANWHILE , the cooks are in the back making pizza while eating pizza picking at their balls ! MAKES SENSE HUH ?!!!? My Wife requested the heart shaped pizza for Valentine's Day. Simple Heart-Shaped Half sausage all pepperoni. Get it home and it's a regular circular pizza. I called immediately. Transferred 3 times and told finally "There's nothing we can do about it." I stated I would have returned the wrong pizza to get the heart shaped for her.... "there's nothing they can do". The place was dead ( There were 4 booths taken up in the restaurant ,l5:30 Friday night), so obviously it wasn't too busy. Having inept staff responses to what are normal accidental issues is beyond disappointing. Thanks for not taking responsibility and losing more customers. We came here for lunch/dinner Saturday. I had 1/2 lb pub burger, onion rings,white had Italian beef sandwich. And we bought a thing of chicken wings between the two of us. My hamburger was undercooked, very greasy, and just not very good. The onion rings were very undercooked and to my surprise they figured out to be a dollar an onion ring. It was $4.95 and I got 6 1/2 of them. Everybody had been telling us since we moved to Mishawaka, IN to try this place. So New Years Eve we tried it about 3 pm to avoid any crowds. We walked in stood there for a while & weren't greeted by anyone. Sat down in a booth and waited for a while and still no one greeted us. Ordered the combination pizza with no green peppers & thin crust, got a pizza with green peppers and we don't know what kind of crust. We ate the toppings after picking out all the green peppers and left the half baked crust behind. She also told us they had the salads at half price that included tomatoes and you add the other toppings. A lot of the cherry tomatoes were spoiled so we picked them out too. When I asked for drinks I was told to go to the other end of the bar to get our order where we were met by another surely person. Ordered 2 sodas, when she started filling 2 large glasses automatically I said one of them needed to be a small & no ice on both. Both came with ice and I paid over $6.00+ for the two drinks! This place is celebrating 50 years in business & the outside and the inside look like it. Old outdated restaurant that is in serious need of an update to the property and an update in the attitude of the employees. We have been spoiled by Pagliai's Pizza in Grinnell where we lived for 46 years. They have been voted #1 in Iowa for several years for many reasons. One of which is producing a quality pizza & a GREAT dining atmosphere. Will we be back, NO! Terrible terrible terrible! Ordered plain large cheese pizza at 3:55. Was told it would be ready in 35 minutes. Should have been ready at 4:30. I only live 5 minutes away so I was there promptly at 4:30. Plain cheese pizza not ready. In the meantime, all these people are coming in picking up their orders! Finally I walked up to the cashier and asked how much longer and she brushed me off saying it wouldn't be much longer. 10 more minutes passed and I asked again....oh this time it was out waiting to be cut. 10 more minutes and after being ignored by the girls at the window, they decided to look. Tonight we came in with out of town guests, excited to show them a great pizza and instead it was a huge disappointment We places orders for both pizza and sandwiches- the sandwich order came out ok. After 30 minutes and seeing pizzas come out that were ordered after us, we gave it 10 minutes. Then we went to the cashier, manager John came and asked if he could help. When told we placed a pizza order 40 minutes ago, he assured us it he pizza was in the oven and would be done in 10 minutes. No apology, no 'we lost your order' no accountability. 15 minutes later, our number was called and we took it to go. All of this could have been saved if manager John would have just admitted that they lost our order. So sad, especially since we were frequent customers- at least 2 times a month.
