I love this addition to the Upper West Side. I am frequently in the area to see a movie or explore the sites. This is a great place to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. There are two large floors with several reading options. I could spend the whole day here if I had the free time. There is a Starbucks cafe inside with seating available. It is usually quiet with people reading books. You can relax and enjoy some peace and quiet away from the outside world. The day I went in it was not too busy. There were mostly high school kids and young kids with their parents. The staff was very helpful with helping us locate our books. We were able to go in and find what we needed. This place is a great addition to the area and I would love to come back here again on a less busy day. read more

This location was recently renovated and looks very nice! They have a nice selection of vinyls located on the first floor. The top floor is deceivingly large and filled to the brim. The cafe has been relocated from the first floor to the second floor and has some seating but is smaller than the previous iteration of the cafe. The staff is nice and helpful when needed. Check out speed is usually pretty fast too. read more

I didn't know there was a Barnes & Noble on the Upper West Side. I visited this establishment a few days ago to browse and check out some books on my summer reading list. This location was very clean and organized. I saw a few books that I will be returning to purchase soon. I will even return to sit in the cafe and read some books there. I went to this location recently to get a new book. I had done my research and knew what I wanted and i had narrowed it down to two books but ultimately I decided to get a new book by an author that I hadn't read before. Also to use the bathroom you need a code which is on the store receipt which is a good thing since there used to be A LOT of homeless people in the bathrooms. The people are friendly and nice and helpful if you need any assistance. I also browsed the different aisles before leaving the store. read more

Fairly typical Barnes and Noble, on the UWS. This is a two-story store, but you can only check out downstairs. Lines can be VERY long. My mother wanted a specific book, and I made a beeline for the Bargain Books...alas, it was now the "Book Annex" and the selection was limited to picture books of muscle cars, books on witchcraft, crossword puzzles, etc. Very disappointing. And why only three stars. I was expecting to find fiction, at least. Nope. I did buy a couple of puzzle and crossword books (good for mental acuity), and two compendiums (one on serial killers and psychopaths, one about ghosts). They didn't really classify as "Bargains," which is probably why they changed the name of that section. We had coffee at the Starbucks. Unsmiling but efficient service. Limited number of tables, large number of people with empty cups reading or using a laptop. So SELFISH, given the small number of tables. We finally snagged a tiny table when a family of six left. And then, of course, there were people waiting to pounce on our table while we were drinking our coffee. We finished our coffees, and graciously left. The entrenched empty-cup table-hoggers all remained. B&N has reading tables, nooks, and benches. They don't HAVE to hog a table at Starbucks once they finish their coffee. Apparently Starbucks doesn't have a "finish your coffee and get out" policy. Which is nice, unless of course there's only about 8-10 tables and six are occupied by people who clearly aren't giving up their territory. read more

Didn't think it was possible for me to leave a review this low for a bookstore, but they sure have ruined this one after months of unnecessary and detrimental construction. What was once warm and cozy now feels sterile and cold. The kids section lost every bit of magic. The new cafe now feels like a hospital cafeteria where it used to be a quirky coffee garret in the mezzanine. Such a shame. read more

Really trying to still enjoy the UWS location but the employees are almost all miserable. The cafe staff are rude and never want to ring up anything else for purchase. I can understand if there was a line but this evening there was no one in line when I wanted to get a coffee and pay for two items - one in which was a kids toy for $24.99. The cashiers on the first floor are equally as rude. Floor staff are completely useless and busy talking to each other. They have limited knowledge of the items in the store so don't bother asking. The first floor is also becoming a walking hazard the way they have the tables setup and dangerous when walking with toddlers. It's like a maze. Why have a kids sections loaded with toys and books but you don't want people there with a stroller. This is the one place that I would like to enjoy with my two kids since its nearby and has coffee. My last few visits have been pretty bad. Staff needs to be trained on customer support. Really turned off and will be cancelling my membership. A store this size should be on point with customer support - they could end up empty. read more

Bathrooms are now locked. Staff will not let you use bathroom til you make a purchase. (Of course, the staff can use the restrooms any time they want.) Stay home, shop Amazon online. That way you can use your own bathroom even if you decide not to buy anything that day. read more

I actually don't think I've ever had a positive experience at this Barnes location. The employees are always rude. Some examples include trying to find books said to be in stock but told it's probably "somewhere," stopped to adjust my books and told seconds later I can't loiter and need to move (when I asked where is best they said I can have a second between the columns but was told she was too busy to show me where that meant), or even having my bag checked because a worker thought I looked suspicious and accused me of shoplifting. I've tried to come to this location because it's the closest to me, but I think I'll just start going to Shakespeare & Co. If I'm going to pay full price for books, I might as well go somewhere more welcoming. read more

Boy do I miss living on the West Side near this B&N location. Service was great today. They have all my favorite items. It's comfortable. They let you sit in the cafe with proof of vaccination. The employees are all friendly and kind. I'm highly recommending you visit if you are in the neighborhood. There's nothing more enjoyable than reading a good book! There's nothing quite like walking into a bookstore. The smells of paper, the large open spaces, and the best amount of books always makes for a pleasant experience to get lost in for an afternoon or evening. This Barnes & Noble location is no exception. It's big (3 stories), clean, everyone wears masks, and social distancing is enforced at the registers. Also, they are dog-friendly. The only qualm my friends and I had was that there was only one bathroom in the entire store, located on the third floor, and it was out of order. read more

I am excited to see how the renovations turn out because they are redoing the ENTIRE place. I've seen some of the changes so far, and I have gotten lost, looking for different sections and things don't seem to be organized very well on the second floor. Maybe that's because everyone is getting used to the new layout but the music books were next to the cookbooks that were scattered in different parts of the floor. It was book chaos. I couldn't find anything. I could forget about the science fiction section because that was also chaotic. Luckily I was able to find the book that I want even though they don't have a full supply yet. I wanted to buy the book "Go The Fuck To Sleep." It's a really funny book and I needed a laugh. I also love being a Barnes & Noble member because the discounts are pretty good. I was lucky enough to find the last copy. I've loved this location since I was a really young child. You can be a reasonably satisfied customer of a business for decades, and then one encounter can end your relationship with that business instantaneously. I was at B&N today and the friend I was with wanted to use the rest room. An employee was guarding the rest rooms and we were told that without a receipt for a purchase, we could not use the rest room. I was a B&N stockholder, I am a Premium Rewards member and I have shopped at B&N for 30+ years, but this new policy has ended everything. This policy is offensive, not just to me, and it is beyond belief in a store full of adults with small children -- will the children have to buy something to be allowed to use the bathroom ? I said they could send my books to my hotel instead...they said that's not possible because they can't change it in the system. Bullspit. I got the worst service trying to return my nook reader. I got 2 nook readers and over a $1200 in ebooks, I lost all reseting my nook. There is no phone number to contact anyone and customer service is a joke. looks like I will see who own's the company and seek legal actions. I've lived two blocks from this store for 28 years and have always made a point to support them, especially since Amazon came into our lives, but they now allow dogs in the store, so I'm done. Customers who are allergic to dogs or are afraid of dogs apparently don't matter. By the way, I love dogs but they have a place and it isn't in a store. read more

I love to hit this Barnes & Noble store when I have a chance. Super busy Dec. 15 with gift buyers. Gift wrap available upstairs, to benefit a local non-profit. First floor, plenty of magazines to peruse and choose. Greeting cards, writing journals, so many pretty and useful gifts. Floor E is the cafe, with room for about 20 seated folks, and the usual java and bakery items available. I splurged for a vanilla cupcake, $3.50, no más! Generally helpful folks. read more

I love this location! I love the feeling that this location is nestled away and intimate, not big and spacey like a department store. You get the feeling that you are at a neighborhood book store rather than a national chain brand. Interesting thing: last time I visited this B&N, a young teenage kid hobbling around on one crutch followed behind me around the store, limping and smiling at me like he was looking for a whole snack. It was a little disconcerting to say the least. I wasn't sure if that broken foot of his had him under the influence of pain meds, or what! As I am clearly old enough to be his guardian and nothing more than that! So that was quite annoying. And so rather than alert security about the little lost puppy dog hopping behind me, everywhere I walked through B&N, I just cut my visit a little short. No drama. I have since come to the conclusion that millennials just don't understand, or either just don't respect, boundaries. They just don't know what that looks like. I worked here as a cashier when this location first opened its doors. And I haven't set foot in this store again until today. Wow. The Nook display took over most of the first floor, shifting everything around. I remember when they used to give readings on the mezzanine where the Mystery section was. But what I remember most is that on a sunny Saturday afternoon like today, all the registers would be manned. All of them. Today, there wasn't even a line. The store looks busy... but it's deceptive. People have always come here to read books and magazines for free. Hell, B&N used to provide note paper for people to copy recipes. Now they're selling yoga mats to make ends meet. With the advent of Wi-Fi (they didn't have it when I worked here... God I'm old) the Cafe is packed almost beyond capacity. It wasn't designed in the late 80's with the kind of loitering Wi-Fi demands. And though they do sell Frappuccinos, they are a "B&N Cafe" and carry very different pastries and tarts than your run of the mill Starbucks. This was the first Megabookstore in the chain, opening up a whole new concept of bookselling. With any luck the UWS store will be the last. Barnes and Noble Booksellers is a bastion to the printed word, besieged on all sides by digital media and Amazon Prime© 2 Day Free Shipping. Maybe it's karma... Lots of independent booksellers died at the end of the Barnes & Noble sword. The King is dead. Long Live the King. read more

Nice Barnes & Noble Book store on the Upper West Side. I came here for a book signing, this is some prime real estate! Huge store, I didn't get that impression from the outside. Barnes & Noble has the book signing process down to a T: -You wait on line to buy the book at a special register -You take your purchased book and get it signed by the celebrity author -You tell the celebrity author that his music was the backbeat of my life throughout the years. I came here on a Monday morning. I don't go to book shops enough. Such a nice quiet environment to sit and read in peace. A nice place to explore new and popular books. There is something special about holding a physical book in your hands that isn't the same as a phone, computer, or kindle. I came here for The Devil Wears Prada paperback. I loaned out the audiobook from the library, but couldn't get the book copy because it has been too popular. So I came here to buy it. They also had the sequel book, Revenge Wears Prada The Devil Returns. There are so many books here, it seems impossible to find specific material. But with a bit of searching, paying attention to genre sections, and knowing the author's last name to search alphabetically, it's not too bad. I will definitely be back to get more fashion-related books. read more

First time in this location and the actual size of it is deceiving from the outside. As we had just finished a late lunch on the UWS and were walking off some of the calories we decided to drop in as there were a few books I wanted to pick up. Word War Z, and The Zombie Survival Guide. Yeah, I am a bit of a nerd at times and love zombie movies, and I heard both were a good read. I lucked out as both are in paperback and were buy 2 - get a third free. We chose a third book and were good to go. The downstairs level is small, but the upstairs is quite large and is where the bulk of the actual store lies. Small Starbucks is off to the side here also. Large children's section of toys and books up here too. Staff was helpful in locating the books for me. Kind of a quieter location, and not as diverse or large as the newer outlet on the UES on 86th street. read more

I am hard press to rate or review Barnes & Noble. It has been part of my life since the mid 70's. Barnes & Noble open my eyes to the world of books and information. It aided me in my quest for knowledge in both high school and college, but at the same time it was the beginning of change for the UWS where I grew up. This location has all the areas of literature covered; biographies, fiction, nonfiction, classics, sports, games, children, just about every popular book and the kitchen sink. I would always purchase my sports magazines here. Always a large selection. I found the bookstore to be well stocked across the board. My conflict begins with all the comforts that a large bookstore has to offer: price, selection, size, amenities, etc. has force the closings of 5 different local bookstores over the years. The corporate force of Barnes & Noble has closed The Shakespearean across the street, The Coliseum on 59 Street and 3 more bookstores in the neighborhood. The conundrum: great deals at Barnes & Noble or supporting local business. Whenever I could my dollars went to local business, but these enterprises died shortly there after. While I am a fan of B & N for certain reading material, neigbhorhood bookstores have a charm and warm feeling. A local bookstore is part of the community. Frequent book buyers = community. I'm almost always a fan of bookstores. This one is no exception. 2.5 floors of books. First floor has a nook corner, sells cards, discounted books, artist supplies, famous celebrities books; second floor has calenders, cafe, various other books (that I didn't explore). Third floor has a huge children's selection, board games, classic books, philosophy, cooking, interior designs books, self improvement books... I was profiled by the "manager" a man named Frank- who was manning the information section and told me I cannot sit down on the floor because they need to "rotate the section". The store was nearly empty and no one in my anywhere near me or trying to get to the cookbook section. He said it was a Covid issue. There were other people in the store touching books and sitting down and were not approached. I was seated for less than 5 minutes. Can't help but think that this happened because I am a young Latina woman- as soon as my husband came next to me he didn't mind if I was sitting down on the floor anymore. Okay, there is magic in this particular Barnes and Noble. Of all the Barnes and Noble Bookstores in NYC, this is the one where I ALWAYS find a GREAT READ. I know, I know, they all carry pretty much the same stock, but, there is magic here. I never have to hunt for long, a GREAT read appears as if from heaven. Yes, there is magic here! I've been to this Barnes & Nobles a few times in the last year, and there are things to like and dislike about this particular one out of a chain. Positives: The customer service is relatively pleasant and good at answering questions. The book selection is well-done, in tune with the neighborhood (for instance, a table on the first floor related to Judaica), with some surprisingly good picks. Negatives: The layout is the first thing that came to mind. There's a mezzanine level that can only be reached from the first floor. The mezzanine level, which includes humor, graphic novels, and drama (what a vastly weird way of putting the three categories together; drama should most certainly be near literature and poetry), doesn't get any traffic because of this layout. Barnes & Noble should have constructed a staircase that went to the mezzanine level from the first floor and reached to the second floor. Instead, the mezzanine level is a wasted space for the most part. The second floor looks like it's been decimated by the bargain remainder books or cheap books produced by Barnes & Noble's publishing arm. While this isn't the case, it looks like it as the bargain tables are one of the first things the eye sees as soon as one gets off the escalator. This Barnes & Noble would be better off doing what the Union Square Barnes & Noble does and putting the bargain table in a noticeable but less dominant space. As it is, the whole second floor has a feel of merchandised paraphernalia despite the stacks of literature further away from the staircase. Air conditioning: every single time I've been to this Barnes & Noble, I've ultimately had to leave because the temperature is kept too cold, whether in the summer or fall. Aisles: if a large percentage of the clientele includes baby-stroller nannies or moms, it would be better to widen the aisles and loss some shelves instead of making shopping uncomfortable for everyone. read more
