well to start off our trip, this was our first time to the barrel house. We moved into Hallmar a few months ago and I don't know how we missed this place but we won't miss it again. The food the food was excellent. Jordan did a good job of describing the various options we drilled in on the pork tacos which apparently were on special and then the fish and chips which is what I got. I also got the cucumber and onions it's a side dish Yum Yum. Service was great. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were here at a pretty quiet time around 3 o'clock. I've been to the Coralville Barrel House a few times now and have had good experiences each time. The menu is a good size, with a nice variety of options, including pizzas and shakes (neither of which I've tried yet). I've had the Cajun Jack chicken sandwich, the Reuben, and The Miami, and found all the be solid sandwiches. I have yet to have had a bad item on their menu, but nothing has blown me away. Barrel house differentiates themselves a little in the side dish arena, offering chips, potato rounds, and barrel cucumbers as slightly different options along with the common fries or salad. Barrel House also has a few house beers. Party of 2, noon on Sunday. It's big and open, several TV's to watch the games. Clean establishment. Server was sweet and attentive, even making sure my son's burger was completely plain. My son loved his food, he's super picky. He ate all of it. Cleaned the plate. I had the firecracker fish sandwich. It was too big to be eaten like a civilized American, so I just took the bun off. Fish was perfectly breaded and fried, topped with cheese and pickles on a bed of some yummy pink and a little spicy coleslaw. I've never had a fish sandwich so unique. Homemade chips, which I ALWAYS mention because not very many places have them, I crave them sometimes. The ranch is definitely homemade, the buttermilk thick kind (I'm guessing sour cream too). I had previously been to another location and thought it was good. So, I was curious to try the new Coralville location. It does appear to have a somewhat bigger menu with different items, so it felt like trying a new place. I had the Cajun Jack Chicken Sandwich, and we split some Spicy Cheese Curds. Both were not bad, but just be warned the cheese curds are in fact spicy. The chicken sandwich was decent, but I would have preferred grilled rather than breaded chicken. I somehow missed that on the menu. Service was a little hectic as they just opened but nothing terrible. I'll definitely be back to try other items. read more

Went there for the first time the other day. We decided just to sit at the bar and eat. The bartender was attentive at first but then he must have left because we never seen him again. It started to get busy in there and I felt bad because it looked like they only had 2 servers for the whole place (including serving us at the bar). This was my first time at Barrel House. My brother has loved it and raves about the one in Dubuque so I had to try it out. My friends and I happened to go on the night they were having music bingo which was fun although the music was so loud we had a hard time hearing each other. I don't drink alcohol, so my review is solely on food. Also, given that the place has only been open for a week, they don't have a host/hostess yet, and the server mentioned they were short on servers today, I am not going to dive into the service side of things. It's always a bit bumpy when getting started. It felt like a typical American pub-style restaurant with run-of-the-mill food. I enjoyed the tangy BBQ sauce-covered pulled pork sandwich I ordered. It was a nice touch to toast the bun to help lessen the seepage of juices into the bun - a clutch move. It still ended up being quite messy, but I don't think such sandwiches can truly be anything but messy (at least if they are any good). The "potato rounds" that I ordered as my side for my sandwich were actually tater tots. They were crisp (almost too crisp), but they were doused in too much seasoning and, about 20% were really dry. The spicy cheese curds lived up to their name. The heat hits you not only as you take a bite, but it lingers long after. Though there are some foods around Iowa that are called spicy that are clearly not (I call that "Iowa Spicy"), these are legitimately spicy. Let that be your warning, Iowa Spicy people! Finally, the prices seem a bit off - especially for the appetizers. I mean, $13 for a plate of truffle fries?! I saw some delivered to the table next to me, and I wouldn't pay anything above $8 for them. May that's just me, but it seems a bit steep. read more

I Came with my dad for lunch. Server was over excited and artificial. Food was mediocre-i ordered a salad- dressing was horrible- and lettuce was bad. I pulled the bad lettuce on a separate plate and let the server know- she could take the plate- I couldn't eat it anymore. She still charged us full price- no questions asked. This is the first time going and to say I want impressed is an understatement. We were greeted by a very nice young man who was our waiter and immediately told us they were out of French fire fries and burger patties...there goes 1/3 of the menu. Those that got beverages that were non alcoholic were given said beverage in a large glass, approximately 8" tall and a straw for that glass that was approximately 6" tall. I went to my car and got seven take out straws out of my glove box that I had and passed them to those trying to constantly retrieve their straws from their drinks. Pretty good food. Fries are great. Mac and cheese is white and oh so creamy. Spicy cheese curds might be my new favorite and nice twist on plain old cheese curds, I ordered them with ranch though, not the special berry sauce they come with. The only thing I found weird was I got the club sandwich, usually the ham and turkey is layered on the whole sandwich, they made it so half the sandwich was only turkey and the other half was only ham. This was odd to me that they made it this way (see pic, I had ate part of it) usually a club is layered and some places it's like a 3 layer thing. This was just like 2-1/2 sandwiches, separate. Seemed odd, but was fine, I just rearranged the meat after I realized. Otherwise, great food. My order was delivered, so I didn't actually go there to review the restaurant. Oh and the 1 thing I didn't like was that they have no white bread options at all. They only have honey wheat bread for the sandwiches, which I'm not a fan of. The staff is super friendly and very attentive. We had waiter Ben B and he was fantastic! He made sure we were doing good and made sure our drinks were filled. The atmosphere was awesome! Super nice and the restaurant was very clean. My family went in for appetizers. The food came out hot and yummy!!! We got the Mr Nacho with the mojo chicken. I have been wanting to try this establishment as it is new to the area. Walked in with NO greating!! Sat at the bar. There was one table outside and three tables inside with people. 3 waiters/waitresses and one bartender. It took exactly 12 minutes to even be recognized. The bartenfee asked the only other person sitting at the bar if he wanted another drink. His drink was still half full. Still has not asked me if I wanted anything. I asked for a menu which she gave me. She proceeded to go outside and sit down with a table of three. Never came back in for over 5 minutes. I left and will never go back.that you Barrel house for the worst experience ever. You have lost my business and as many people as I can tell business. read more

Came in for lunch recently and was a bit underwhelmed. I've been searching for a place with a killer chicken sandwich and unfortunately, the one I ordered was the wrong one- the Cajun jack chicken sandwich. My chicken was dry & the rest of the sandwich was heavy handed on the sauce. Not certain if this sandwich usually comes this way or if the cook was compensating for overcooking the chicken. At least it wasn't undercooked. It could have just been a bad day for them? Service was scant. They seemed to have had 3 service staff members on the floor with approximately 7 tables (mostly 2 tops) 2 tables of which were done and left shortly after we sat down. Our server didn't go over their very large menu or ask any questions other than are we ready to order. The place was a little unkempt and wished the restroom had a foot handle to open the door because there aren't paper towels in the restroom to open the doors with. Also wished they had different napkin options because my black pants were riddled with lint from their white napkins afterwards. On the plus side, my partner had the firecracker fish sandwich and I tried that and it was quite tasty. I'd be willing to give this place another go & try something different. read more

Very Disappointing! We waited for over 10 minutes after walking in the door with no acknowledgement from a hostess or any of the servers. The hostess never appeared and the servers went out of their way to avoid eye contact with the 10 people waiting at the hostess station. We were one of three parties that just left after standing around waiting for someone to seat us or tell us there would be a wait or acknowledge us in any way. So I can't comment on the food but I can say the servers were very rude and management was non-existent. read more

My boyfriend and I had ordered takeout during the soft opening when that was the only option and very much enjoyed the food we had. We were excited to share with my family and so we all went out for dinner. We got sat quickly and our waitress was fantastic. Some food came out wrong twice and when brought to the managers attention he essentially yelled at us, saying it was correct both of the other times, but he would go remake it again, before he turned around and stormed off. He is the only reason for the low rating. Our waitress actually apologized to us for his behavior... this should absolutely not have to happen in my opinion. We will go back because the food is fantastic, but we will certainly give them some time to iron out the kinks. read more

Delicious food, fast & friendly service even though it was opening weekend. We had spicy cheese balls appetizer - if you can take the heat, the berry dipping sauce adds a lot. Burgers & sandwiches were tasty, fries & truffle fries were good but not as fresh as we would like. And 1 in our party tried the boozy cookies/cream milkshake. This has become one of my husbands and I's go to restaurants in the area. We always are seated quickly, the staff is friendly, and we never wait long for our food. The portions are large so we often get two meals for the price of one with leftovers. Prices are very reasonable as well. read more

My wife and I ate dinner during the "soft" opening weekend and what a wonderful meal...delicious food. We sat at the bar with the idea we'd switch to other seats but our bartender (Lilly) was so pleasant and attentive that we didn't move. Consequently, we did end up having a few more drinks than anticipated...awesome selection of beers and Lilly made a couple mixed drinks that were delicious. Finally, the menu is impressive and our food was fantastic! We all ended up ordering something to share and try and everything was purely perfection. Staff was helpful and happy and the Assistant General Manager even stopped by to make sure we were having a great time. I gave the barrel house a second try - was closed the first time I stopped. First, Friday night at 6, not at all busy. Our server was really nice but didn't seem aware of the basics of serving - knowing the beers and menu, checking how the food was shortly after serving, and bringing the bill in a timely manner after we had finished. Not all the beers on tap were listed on the menu. Husbands order was not made correctly- they made a fresh plate. Sweet potato fries and potato rounds were lukewarm. Chicken salad had some gristle. Pulled pork was tasty. However, is probably a great place to watch games ( lots of tvs, 2big screens)and have appetizers and drinks. read more

The service was very good, and there are no complaints on that side but I cannot say the same about the food. We ordered the bbq pork nachos and they came out cold with minimal pork, too much cold shredded cheese, and hardly any queso. As a main I got the Diablo burger and it looked like a gas station burger with a fried whole jalapeño stacked into it. The taste wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't great. read more
