    Live insects
    Rob G.

Worst stay possible, rude staff except for mike. Bugs everywhere, bug guts on walls of freshly "cleaned" rooms. Suage smell in 504a/b. Dead and live insects throughout. Just awful! No communication, and no resolution.

    Enjoying the sun and surf.

This is our first time here. We love Duck, NC. My husband and I exchanged a week at Barrier Island. We have a one bedroom, with 1/2 kitchen. Units 500 (furthest from the beach) We are not huge fans of microwaves, but the unit was equiped with one and an electric skillet, 2 burner heat plate, toaster, pots, pans and enough dishes for two!! It was a pleasant surprise. We eat in a lot. There are also several bbqs outside each housing unit. The couch could use updating, and a new bathroom floor. But it worked perfect for us. The beach is amazing and that's what we came for. There is a lot of wild life and resident kitty's. We would come here again. It's quiet, safe, and very close to the beach. Oh they have 2 pools one indoor and one big pool outdoors. They have activities as well. We did not used them.

Deck with cheap plastic table/chairs and neglect

I first came here in 1987 and loved it so much I bought a timeshare. Nearly 30 years later; same carpets, same furniture, same appliances. This once jewel on the beach has become a tired and run down sad caricature of a beach resort. I see some buildings have gotten a facelift with new stairs and siding, so perhaps the management is at long last spending the annual maintenance fees they charge each owner. This resort is long past due for a refresh. The spiders are numerous, the windows are cruddy, the plumbing is louder than the ceiling fans, but not as loud as the upstairs neighbors. Barrier Island Station is a "former" premier property with a great location. They seem to think location is enough to keep people coming back. I came back, and it's just sad to see how the years of neglect have taken their toll on this once beautiful property. Just pathetic. The worst sin I can tell you about is the poor housekeeping. There are dead bugs on every window, dead bugs on every outdoor light fixture, and lots of dead bugs on the carpet behind the couch. UGH! We had to buy a shower curtain, towels, and sheets because the linens provided were industrial quality - think prison linens. The shower curtain was moldy and thin. The towels are OK, but once we saw how the place was cleaned, we decided to use our own towels as well. Wait a few years for them to update these condos before booking your vacation.

Very nice resort in the quaint town of Duck. The good: Very spacious units with full kitchen which was stocked well in our unit. Two bathrooms with a jetted or jacuzzi tub off of the master bedroom upstairs and a full bathroom with shower down. Having a washer and dryer in the unit was super convenient! ( Make sure to run dryer during the day as it does heat up the bedroom making it warmer for sleeping) Our balcony faced the ocean and the outdoor pool which was a nice view. The resort has daily activities but I think my favorite was the movie night by the pool. The snack shack located near the beach was also a nice touch. The staff were always pleasant and helpful. The not so good: There are A LOT of stairs!! If you are unfortunate enough to land a top floor unit you will despise the stairs. Having to lug all of your stuff up those stairs will not be pleasant. If you are traveling with anyone with a physical disability I don't think this is the place for you which also brings me to my next point... the trek to the beach. It was quite the walk to get to the beach from our unit. We didn't want to pay to rent beach chairs so we brought our own but this meant having to carry chairs, towels, cooler, beach bags, umbrellas and anything else down those stairs all the way around the pool more stairs then around the snack shack then down more stairs to finally hit the beach. It was 100 degrees and so humid in July that we were worn out by the time we got to the beach. The trek back was worse due to the climbing of the dreaded stairs to our unit! We decided to load the car and drive to the beach the next day but since everyone else had the same idea parking was at a premium. If you couldn't tell by now.. I hated the stairs. The units were nice but a little outdated. Not enough to bother me but worth the mention. There are two pull out couches and there are some extra bedding but I would suggest bringing some of your own. The blankets were not the nicest. The jacuzzi tub upstairs in our unit never worked. Management was notified but nothing was done to fix it and we never got offered a discount. We really didn't fight for it either. Water pressure in the shower was almost non existent. Look.. we made the most of our stay and made jokes about the stairs and getting in our steps and exercise. We had some great experiences and now have some great memories even though the stairs will be a legend for generations to come:) It's not all bad and it's not all good but maybe ask for a first level unit. We personally would not stay here again but there are folks who vacation here a lot and swear by it.

How did we like our stay, we had fun. After we settled down and did our room inspections. Carpet is very old, the shower caulking is cheaply designed. We were offered online to have an ocean view but when we arrived we were told they do not have rooms available with ocean view. Our credit card was charged before we arrived. The town is cute with plenty to do. Overall we had a good time.

Of course the ice machine is out of order. I was awakened to construction men right outside my balcony repairing the patio of the restaurant. There are signs directing you to the elevator and then you get there it says staff only. The best part was the bistro, but even then the construction men were right on the other side of the wall from my table tearing apart the outside wall. Plus there's a dining area and living room. Nice full balcony outback with a great view of the ocean. Wonderful breeze out the front but none of the windows worked to let the air in from the front. Only one of the elevators work. Some of the lights don't work. The living room TV has gone bad and often displays the programming as a negative image or mostly green in color. Side of the refrigerator has good amount of rust. The icemaker didn't work. The showers had decent water pressure and they have nice soap products. The food at the restaurant was good. The crabcake was good portion and tasty and the vegetable medley had excellent flavor. I was overcharged when I arrived for what my confirmation said. Hopefully that has been straightened out with my bill when I check out. There was an issue with the elevator the one morning as the employee said it wasn't working. This other lady who looked like a manager, was asking other guests about the elevator. When I told her that is your employee with the supply cart and he's been standing at the elevator and it's not working. She's responded to me saying "I don't know him. I don't know what's going on. I don't know about another elevator. I'm new here. This is my first day." Really? You start your first day on Easter Sunday and you had no training? There is another elevator, but apparently that's been out of order for many months. Thankfully, the employee with the supply cart was able to get the elevator back working quickly Lots of available parking in the open lot We consider staying again, but likely will try another place

Having checked out of our Air BandB place we had to find a new place. We found this B and B about noon, and the owner led us right to a room and we were in! When I booked The Loft, I was unsure what to expect as I hadn't read other reviews about it, so here is my take for those potentially interested in booking: The Loft * it is basically a one-bedroom apartment -- with a bed in the living room area and a bed in the bedroom. There is a microwave, a refrigerator, and a Keurig. You have a full sized bathroom as well, and a legit living area with a couch and a couple chairs. It is perfect to split amongst 4 people; you won't feel crowded! * It is a walk upstairs. You can get to The Loft using a separate entrance from the house. You do not need to walk through the main house to get to The Loft. We liked this a lot, for privacy. But, you may need to make several trips to/from your car if you are carrying a lot of luggage. If you are unable to carry luggage on your own, I'd recommend having a friend help you or, if you are staying alone, I would recommend a different room at Cypress. The walking up the stairs was not an issue for me and my friends, but I think it could have been an issue for my parents. * It has a outdoor patio area with 4 chairs around a small table, and you have a distant view of the ocean. It's lovely. The B&B experience: Bill was simply fantastic throughout our stay. The breakfast was delicious every morning. My husband and I are early birds so had no issue making it in time for the 8:30 breakfast. The breakfast was fresh and yummy! You are walking distance from the beach (like a 3 minute walk!). The B&B has chairs for your use, so you can grab one of those chairs and walk over to the beach. You're also walking distance from a few restaurants and to Duck Donuts if that's your thing. We tried Duck Donuts for the first time on a morning walk; it was ok -- to each their own! Tips: If you are driving to Duck for a wedding, please leave the Cypress 2 hours before your event start! We had no clue how bad traffic could get. What should have been a 20 minute ride took slightly over 2 hours. Apparently, it's just like that on the weekends (especially Saturdays), so you've been warned! All in all, we had a fantastic experience here and will be excited to return.

There are absolutely things about this TownPlace Suites that I would like to see changed or that I…read moredidn't like, however I'm still giving 5 stars because of the location and the setup they have here and because I personally would go back without a second thought. First, some of the issues I have: The room layout puts one bed very close to the air conditioner and because they have the old-fashioned hotel style AC units, that leaves at least one person getting directly blasted with cold air all night. Using pool towel clips to put a towel over one side of the vent did help but reduced the efficacy of the AC and made the room warmer for everyone else. Breakfast is nice (and free) but the setup of it seems to be done as if this is a business hotel and not a beach front hotel. The cereal choices were all boring adult cereals, the bread for toast was VERY whole grain (as in it had pieces of grains in it), and the only milk they had was white milk (for example). Adding a small amount of more kid-friendly breakfast elements would go a long way. The outdoor pool is sheltered from the wind by the sand bank and gets really hot in the sun, a lightweight shade over the whole (or part of) the deck would probably be a welcomed addition by most people. As for what's great about this place: The location includes a beachfront pool + small snack shack with beach access which is directly across the road from the hotel itself. This gives the best of both worlds with beachfront access as well as having better parking and more room on the hotel property. On non-weekends the price is super affordable for a beachfront Marriott property. Not to mention the only Marriott property on the Outer Banks. It's very close to great food options, many walkable. Stuff for both adults and kids is easy to access. It's also not far to many interesting sightseeing or cultural things to see. All-in-all, I would love to see some minor changes but even with some flaws this is definitely a 5 star option.

Do not stay at this hotel…read more I've stayed in many Marriott properties over the years, but I wish I could give minus five stars to TownePlace Suites OBX. Infrastructure The website photos are completely deceptive. The hotel is not well maintained, despite being built in 2017. There are leaks throughout the property, and visible pockets of mold. The "Blue House" across the street (the beach access point) feels like an afterthought. There was only one deck chair, and it was broken. The handrail leading to the deck was also broken. Hygiene Poor. The interior is not properly cleaned, and both elevators were consistently dirty. Outside, there were empty bottles and trash bags scattered around the parking lot. Beach access Disappointing. If you're expecting easy, relaxing beach access based on the website photos, you'll be let down. You have to cross a street where pedestrians don't have the right of way, pass the poorly maintained deck, and then use stairs to reach the beach. Not worth the hassle. Breakfast Very poor. It's grab-and-go, extremely limited, and tasteless. Skip it and eat elsewhere. Service Unhelpful. We prepaid for a three-night stay but decided to leave after two nights due to the issues above. The front desk did not offer any flexibility or even a credit toward another Marriott property--we simply lost a night. Save yourself the headache. Stay elsewhere--areas like Duck or Corolla offer a much better experience. I'd also avoid Kill Devil Hills altogether; it's not walkable and doesn't offer a pleasant stay.

You do have a easy access drive up area to dispose of your trash. Overall nice accommodations. Not a gated community and as I was loading up to leave , a older van started up next to me in the parking spot. It was loud( no muffler ) and the fumes were pointing right at me from the exhaust pipe. As I was coughing, I went up to the window to ask if they could turn off the engine till I was finished. Too my surprise, I seen two guys smoking, not pot but crack. They were startled and I asked them to turn off the engine it was choking me out with the exhaust. They must have spent the night in the van because I did not see anyone get in it while I was loading up my SUV. They did turn off the van, it had a name of a Church from VA on the side. Then they turned it on again and too off. Good. Like I said it was not a gated community. Also a problem with communication: No Phone number for company , no answer for the number on Yelp and no voice mail. I found and cleaned black mold from the bathroom. The gas grill did not light, the HVAC filter was filthy, should have been changed a few months ago. No number to communicate with owners, unable to resolve any problems.
