I experienced garbage service at the Car Clinic twice. After their MADATORY $160 DIAGNOSTIC they gave me grossly overstated conclusions. The first time I had personally switched out my motor in a 1998 Ford Mustang GT. I put it in slightly higher on the left side motor mount and I went there to have them level the engine. Instead, they said I needed to replace both motor mounts for $600. I took my car home and leveled it myself. The second time (same car) I went to have them adjust my Torque Converter, but their diagnostic said I needed to not only replace the transmission but also my radiator because it acted as the coolant system for the transmission for no less than $6000. Again, I took my car home and did it myself. If you don't know anything about working on cars they will work you!!! read more

My husband was hauling a shipment up from LA for our business, and his cargo van died after getting gas in Barstow, leaving him stranded with a trailer full of merchandise. After a visit to an auto parts store, he was told he would need to replace the alternator. He had to stay overnight at a hotel and wait for the Car Clinic to open up the next morning. They took him in right away and found out that both the alternator and the battery were fine - it was just a loose connection that wasn't secured when the hitch was installed back home, and it was draining the battery. After a quick tightening of the connection, my husband was on his way back home to northern Utah, and was only charged $30. THANK YOU KEVIN!! I know that my husband could have been charged a lot more (or even led to believe that the alternator needed to be replaced) because they knew of his emergency situation. My van was towed here because it overheated. A diagnosis was done the next day, and I was told it was the heads. Given an estimate of $4,300.00 and that it may take up to 2 weeks to be repaired. I had to stay in a motel for three weeks that cost me $1400.00. I was told they would keep me informed on the progress. They never called me and I had to call them everytime. I think this could have been done in 10 days; 2 days to take the engine apart 1 week at the shop to repair the heads, 2 days to put it back together. I was pretty upset with all of this as I didn't have any money. I tried to explain this to them. They said they couldn't do anything about it. They never had a mechanic dedicated to my car or saw any need to try to expedite it so I could get back on the road. I have contacted the BBB to report them. Don't go here... Our Ford Transit broke down just north of Barstow headed toward Utah on a Sunday at 2 pm. Got a tow through AAA and they recommended the Car Clinic. Got to the shop by 3 and even though they had a busy slate of vehicles, they had a good size crew working and were able to move quickly into running diagnostics to see what was wrong. There is an upfront charge for diagnostics, but I got to see why: they run every test they can and they do additional research online to make sure they figure out the problem and the solution. They figured it out, but wouldn't be able to work on it because it was closing time. They were pretty sure they'd be able to fix the issue they found right away in the morning and their estimated price was very reasonable. We had to stay at local motel and we (family of six) were going to walk. The owner wouldn't hear of it and two of the mechanics offered to drive our family to the motel! Long story short, our vehicle was ready by 10 am the next morning: fixed, tested, and running great. Even got a AAA discount. Friendly, honest, and they went the extra mile for us. I was on my way to Utah from Los Angeles. I stopped in Barstow to get gas and as I was making my way into the freeway, my car turned off. Thankfully I was in a parking lot and was able to park and call AAA. Anyways, at first I thought it was the battery but the car seemed to turn on just fine. The only thing not turning on was the engine. A representative from AAA came and said that there was something wrong with the alternator causing the battery to exhaust. He was able to tell by connecting the car to a computer. I went into panic since I had my young son with me and proceeded to call the nearest mechanic shop which was this one. I told them what could be the issue and they said they would take me in to check but could not assure me they would have the part I needed (completely understandable). When I went in, I was greeted by a woman in the front desk. I let her know what I was told by AAA. She went to the back office to explain to the "manager" who is her husband and I am assuming owner of the shop. She told me that they would need to check the car since AAA is not a mechanic. I asked multiple times to speak to the "manager" because I needed some clarity as I was already overwhelmed. Instead I was met with an attitude coming from the woman with no sympathy involved. I wasn't being asked to be baby'd, it was my right as a customer to speak to the person in charge for some level of understanding. The "manager" refused to talk to me so I had to surrender and give my keys. Once they checked the car, a person came and told me that the alternator was faulty and they would have to replace it. He then advised that I could drive it back home to take it to my mechanic since it wasn't an urgent matter. The manager then interfered and said that I wouldn't make it and the older men said "are you sure?" which the "manager" responded with a shoulder shrug. I was very nervous since I wasn't getting a direct answer and decided to stay the night in Barstow so that they could replace the alternator the next day. That morning I received a call making me aware the alternator had been replaced. I asked "will the car stop again" which they answered with "no, since the alternator is new". I ended up paying close to $500. We decided to continue our road trip and an hour in, I again had to pull over for gas since the mechanics drove my car around and wasted over half a gas tank (not sure why, they never mentioned it). The car once again stopped in the middle of the day, heat up high. I called and they said I had to bring it back. Once I did, instead of connecting the system to analyze it they decided to drive my car even more for hours to detect the "misfire". They came back and finally the manager was the one who spoke to me. Must have been to show a pretty face after I had now spent hundreds of dollars. He said he had no idea what was wrong for the car and that the alternator though it wasn't urgent it was probably something that needed to be repaired. I was the only who was given them options of what could have gone wrong since I spent my time investigating the options. They gave me none. The manager was so nice and polite, nothing like the demeanor he held the previous day. It was very obvious it was so that I wouldn't make a scene or demand for a refund. In the end, I ask you to not trust this shop. They take advantage of travelers who are passing by since their encounters with this shop are mostly last options and they know it. In this whole experience I sincerely know they didn't do diagnostics in my car and only fixed the alternator because I told them that I and AAA believed it was faulty. They will play the "I don't know" game even though there is technology which can detect a problem, especially with a BMW which I have. And now I have to save to be able to afford a visit into a trustworthy mechanic since I spent close to $800 including accommodations. Dont come here!! read more

I was first skeptical of the place since I had a rental car and wasn't sure what to expect. The check engine light came on and we pulled up to Barstow clinic, they didn't even bother asking us before fixing the clamps on the throttle pipes in the engine and they didn't even charge us for it! They just charged us the base feee of $95 and had a nice convo with the dude rocking the gxsr1000. We were driving from LA to Albuquerque and smelled fuel as we were approaching Barstow. It was Sunday so we worried we wouldn't find anyone to take a look, but this place was open so we gave them a call. They told us to come by and they immediately inspected our car for leaks or other fuel issues. Thankfully there was nothing seriously wrong, just an overfilling issue, but Kevin and Lawrence were so quick and so nice to immediately accommodate us to ease our minds and get back on the road! We were going back to Utah from California earlier this month and our car broke down in Yermo on a Sunday at 02:00. Barstow Car Clinic was the ONLY shop that was opened on a Sunday!! Thank goodness for us!! The manager Lawrence helped us out and was amazing and professional! He gaves us a heads up that we might have to wait until Monday to track down our part which was totally understandable given it was a Sunday and our Subaru was not a car that you could easily find parts for either which we knew that coming in as well. Luckily he was able to track down the parts and his mechanic Kevin had it up and running in no time!! Boy are we forever thankful for these two gentlemen!! They got us back on the road and made it home safely! The scary part was the bill being that we were in a small town which is not unusual up in Utah to charge you double or triple the price of what it regularly costs elsewhere. And to our SURPRISE!! It was a VERY LOW AND FAIR PRICE they charged us!! I even asked Lawrence if he was sure that was correct? He said surely and explained how amazed at his prices and thankful for getting us up and running on a Sunday!! I would not recommend this auto shop in Barstow. Like previous reviews state. They do SHADY BUSINESS. I took my car in and they gave it back to me worse than what I turned it in for. There is no reasoning and no customer service with the owner of this shop. They will not work with you even tho they messed up your car. I will not trust them with any of my auto care needs. I'll be going to Walmart next time for my oil change if it was between this auto shop and Walmart. read more
