We started by googling pre schools in Big Bear and sending them an email asking them if they had any staff willing to come to our cabin and watch the kids so we could enjoy a day of skiing. We heard back from a few, but after exchanging emails Katie felt right. We were very pleased with our decision. She provided healthy meals and snacks. When we arrived at her house at 8am she was ready and waiting for us with a tidy house and warm welcome. She was tender with the kids and handled the nervous little ones like a professional. She texted updates and pictures throughout the day. And sent the big ones home with a bag of the crafts they had completed. And sent the little ones home with a report card saying their mood, their favorites thing of the day, their poos, meals and milk. I wish Katie would move to San Diego! We will definitely be calling her next year Or maybe once more this year (weather cooperating)

Smart Start Academy does NOT care about the children. Initially, I really enjoyed their atmosphere…read moreand cleanliness, but quickly realized that is really all that they had to offer... a clean looking environment. There is absolutely no communication between staff/management/owner to parent and NO CONCERN for the child's emotional needs. Furthermore, the disciplinary practices including, but not limited to, the "sad chair" or "relaxing chair" (time out), is not mentioned in the parent handbook, much like the teachers using their cell phones as televisions to play cartoons like cocomelon, is not. Having open lines of communication, with a team working alongside me to care for my child, is something I take very seriously. They lacked severely in this area. It was nonexistent. On a specific occasion, I was checking in with my daughter via the cameras the school gives parents to access... which most of the time aren't working properly. I didn't see my child anywhere, and got concerned, so I messaged the teacher... no response. So, I called the front desk. They then proceeded to tell me that my daughter had a potty accident and a big emotion ensued from this (lots of tears and vocal frustration), that they claim was "inconsolable." They proceeded to put my daughter in a chair, by herself, surrounded by her peers, isolated and shamed... while she "calmed down" alone. This didn't work, understandably, because in such a vulnerable and embarrassing moment for my 3 year old, she needed connection and empathy more than anything. Instead she got sent to another classroom where she knew no one. To sit, alone, in another chair. The fact that a 3 year old is expected to have to have the tools to deal with such new and complex emotions speaks volumes to this establishments lack of real and valuable child education training and knowledge. The lack of compassion, connection and empathy for my child was appalling, to say the least. I picked my child up early that day and politely emailed the school several times, for a week, requesting an IDT meeting to discuss my concerns. I never heard from them. Again, no communication, care or respect. I had to walk in and speak with the owner, Chad. Although he didn't give me the courtesy to speak privately, I was able to voice my concerns and at least get more information on the occurrences of that day. However, after leaving that meeting, I received an email from his wife, Melissa, whom was not present for my conversation with Chad... That they were proceeding with removing my child from the school. That they can't meet my "requests" they assumed I had, considering no one met with me to ever hear them. I was given no courtesy in being involved in this decision... no meeting, no discussion or involvement. It really hurt me for my daughter. She didn't even get a chance to say goodbye to her friends. How abrupt and sad. With this new understanding I now know that a school that is not willing to work with parents in raising children is not one that I want my child in. It appears that Smart Start has a hard structure and care not about each individual child's needs-which says a lot when child care professionals KNOW (should know) how unique each child's temperament is and that each child may require something slightly different from the standard practice. Also including occurrences that don't regularly happen that may require the same flexibility in care. Clearly their priority isn't the "whole child" as they have expressed they are not staffed enough to foster arguably the most important developmental domain- social emotional, needs of each child individually and specifically. For these reasons, I do NOT support SmartStart Academy. I hope parents think twice before enrolling their child here.

Her motor skills, academic education, socialization, and personality have blossomed and thrived through the nurture, love, and structure her teachers and the preschool provide. They work with potty training and her learning experience has been absolutely incredible! The hours are 7am-5:30pm and each classroom has their own little mascot! She started out as a Busy Bee (2-3 year old class) and has now progressed to the Blooming Butterflies class (3-4 year old class). I cannot wait for my baby girl to join the Rowdy Raccoons (4-5 year old class) for the new year coming up and prepare for kindergarten and graduation there after. The hours work amazing for my college and work schedule and they do not go by the school district, so they are open a lot more days than other preschools nearby. They are open during winter breaks, spring break, most 3 day weekend holidays, and it has helped a lot with both my work and school. We are so glad we found this absolute incredible preschool! It is so scary as a parent to find and place the trust of your child with others, and here, that fear goes away instantly when seeing how fast your child just connects, bonds, and loves going there to see their teachers! I highly recommend the ROCK Preschool to anyone looking for a safe, warm, nurturing, and caring environment for little ones to grow and thrive at. Not to mention, the playgrounds! They have such amazing playgrounds. Two in fact, which is very rare in the San Bernardino Mountains. Sign up your kids! It will be the best decision you have ever made.

I am not associated with anyone who has left a review on this page nor do I know who they are. I was in contact with Tara for about 2 weeks before my daughter started daycare with her. At first I thought this was a good fit but unfortunately it wasn't. My daughters first day of daycare was today and when checking in with my daughter Tara told me "I stepped out to go to a meeting & have been watching the cameras from my phone I'm on the way back now". She did not mention who was supervising my child so I questioned if she steps out for meetings often and where they were at. When I picked up my daughter it turns out that her mother was watching her. I seen her mother this morning when I dropped my daughter off but did not receive any formal introduction and how long she was going to be staying, which is what left me under the impression after that text message that she was left alone. I later than received an email from Tara stating that she has to let my daughter and I go from the daycare because "It doesn't appear that you're prepared to release your child into a nurturing environment and allow providers to care for her.". She did not try to confront me with the issues that were present between us so I was not able to explain my side of the situation. She later then told me to "seek mental help because you need it badly." I feel harassed at this point all because of I was in concern of my daughter. I wouldn't recommend. UPDATE: After Tara, the owner, read this review, she asked me to remove my post because I'm "lying", although I have proof of everything that occurred during all of our interaction. She is telling me that she is now going to take me to court and sue me. I am a 23 year old single mom and I am feeling unsafe, very threatened, and belittled as she keeps mentioning that I am on welfare and a single mother, trying to use it as an insult. I am a educated 23 year old woman who is in nursing school and does not deserve to be disrespected like this. At this point If you do choose this daycare please be cautious. The public has the right to know what I went through.
