Purchased 5-6' skip laurels from Barton Nursery in Oct of 2025. We were told that it was not too late in the year to plant, and the plants would be fine. Well, they are not fine. We can see already that they are not going to make it. Called the Nursery and they said they only guaranteed plants for 30-60 days. Wish we had been told. They will not replace. I purchased an Alberta Spruce from Barton on April 23td. Within a month it was showing signs of dying and we contacted Barton. We were told to send them the pictures and to remove the dead tips. We did that and now the tree is almost totally dead. We we contacted them we were offered 50% off a new tree. We rejected their offer and will purchase elsewhere. It's a shame that Barton do stand behind what they sell. Even the big box stores stand behind their products better than Barton. Been using Sigismondi in Manalapan for years and unfortunately tried this unprofessional place since I was working in Edison...great help in the office as the woman was very kind but all went downhill once I got back to the yard. Older man named Joe, easily in his 90s and definitely does not belong operating heavy machinery, immediately called me stupid and started yelling for me to go to school and learn English since I parked near the topsoil pile, but not where he wanted me to park!! Then he proceeded to insult my slow driving, as I was extra careful due to a family shopping for shrubs nearby. Today, my wife and I visited Barton Nursery for purchasing perennials for our garden. We wanted plants that can grow under shade, bloom flowers, and are safe from Rabbits and Deer. Kylie (hope the spelling is correct) was very helpful in showing and explaining about the plants we need. She is very knowledgeable and courteous. We bought four perennials, and the price was reasonable. Icing on the cake is the "2 months warranty" for the plants. I went in here to look for a Father's Day plant for my dad. The place was actually pretty large with a lot of space to roam around but I had trouble finding plants that I wanted. It was hard to get the attention of the staff there so I felt discouraged. I ended up looking around with my dad and we found the plant we wanted by ourselves. The honeysuckle plant we ended up purchasing is pretty high quality and was reasonably priced. It is still doing quite well today. The employees at Barton's Nursery were extremely helpful and well educated about the plants they had. They had a wide variety of shrubs and really helped me with my decision regarding which to buy by telling me information regarding each of them. The staff was eager to help, with them stopping to see if I had any questions and helping me with selecting the plants. The front office was also extremely efficient, not taking long complete my transaction for the 12 plants I had selected and being extremely patient with me. Overall a great experience. Very expensive nursery with standard stock. Better know what you need as you won't get much help. The owner's adult son is very rude and not helpful. Make sure you mark what you pick out as they will switch on you and admit, that the better ones are just for show as they are treated with nutrients. They also won't help you load and tell you to come back at their convenience. Horrible experience. read more

The service at Barton nursery is the worst. I went to this nursery to purchase mulch. I asked a woman ( didn't get her name) in the front office for assistance as well as to look at mulch samples . She rudely pointed me in the direction of mulch and mentioned there were no samples . I was the only customer there. I finally spoke to an employee named Michael who mentioned they had mulch samples. I asked him three times before he finally showed me where the samples were located. I decided leave as I found the staff to be inattentive, rude, unprofessional and not very knowledgable. read more

Pulled into lot through front gates and was browsing plants. Some guy comes chasing after us YELLING hey you can't be in here! Not allowed to drive around and we are closed. We said gate shouldn't be open then and he said it's not. How did we get in? We went out the same way we came in with NO sign saying closed or NO sign saying no driving. Call us liars? There is. Way to say thing to potential customers. That was not it. If it was the last nursery in NJ I would not buy here. Was planning on spending 1500-2000. We wanted a pink dogwood and they sold us a dogwood that's now blooming in white. When I went back they told me that it's a hybrid and someday it might bloom pink. Their fix was to give me a deal on another dogwood plus a "reduced" delivery charge. Well, between delivery charges and the $$$$ to have it planted, their "fix" was much more than we could afford. My request was the refund of the $100 delivery charge on the original order. It was refused since they delivered the first tree, never mind it was not as promised, our receipt clearing says we paid for a PINK dogwood. We'll NEVER go there again. Never, never. read more

A few years ago, I purchased 6 Blue Spruce trees from Barton Nursery in Edison. After 2 died, I went back to Barton's and told them my problem. They claimed not to know the reason the trees were failing, but offered me 2 new trees at a 20% discount. 20% off is what landscapers pay. For the second time, I had to pay $65 regular price, for a 7 mile delivery. Everything seemed expensive, but I wanted to replace the dead trees. The next year all the trees started to die,so I called the nursery, I was told to send an email with photos and a description of the problem. I complied, expecting help within a week or two. 24 days later, I received the following response: "We have received your email and I will pass it along to management." With no help coming from the vendor, I searched the Internet and learned that I had been sold diseased trees. I had no other blue spruces, so this disease that spreads from one blue spruce to another came from Barton's trees. The disease is called Rhizophaerra, a blue spruce disease that this self-lauding nursery must have, or should have known about. After learning how I might save the trees, I had a landscaper apply the required three fungicide applications. Then, one tree from the latter purchase died. To summarize: I purchased 6 blue spruces, was never told that they might be diseased before the purchase, or told how to try to save them, after the nursery was made aware of the problem. Instead, I was sold 2 more diseased trees at little discount, one of which died within months despite professional treatment. Barton's made a large profit from my misfortune and never showed any sign of caring. Last month, I returned to Barton"s to speak with "Joey" who, I was told, was the boss. My goal was to relate my experience. I expected nothing in return but an apology. When I arrived at the counter, a rude woman, who seemed annoyed that I wanted to speak only with the boss, told me that he was not available and that I should deal with her. She insisted that I tell her everything and give her any written information I had. I told her that I preferred to meet with Joey and would meet with him at his convenience, and give my receipts and unanswered email to him. I was told that he would return in three days. Three days later I left a telephone message in his mailbox, asking that he contact me. No response: two days after that; another message. Again, no response. A month has passed and he has not called. I am not surprised, of course. My experience with Barton nursery is: poor product, lack of concern, reluctance to help, rudeness, failure to follow up on customer problems. I plan to replace the dead blue spruce from another nursery, one with a better product and a better attitude. read more

I can speak for the plants because I go there whenever I am at my daughter's house in NJ, and I buy whatever I need, but the reason I give this place 5 stars - although I have not been there yet this year -- is because my granddaughter will not stop begging me to go because, in her words, "Dave is the most gorgeous guy in the world." She has lost her mind over some young man who works there - at least he did last season - and she is so smitten that she insists we buy everything there so she can tag along. This Dave fellow seems to be a young man with thick, longish, wavy light brown or dark blonde hair who wears Wayfarer type sunglasses and rides around in a golf cart. I suspect he is about 21 or so. I suppose he is a very cute young man, but my granddaughter's infatuation has me worried that she is a little too boy crazy. I am an old lady, and I don't really know which young guy is "gorgeous" or "awesome." I just buy plants. Dave, whoever you are. my granddaughter loves you. Please, if she faints before you, be nice and help her up. Get her a drink of water. She is attending Princeton University and as much as you might be the man of her dreams, we want her to graduate and pay attention to her studies. When she graduates, I will be happy to pay for a dinner for the two of you at a restaurant of your choice. So, these people lost me as a customer before I even made my first purchase. I call the day before I drive there to confirm they have the tree I need, and they do. Mind you, the lady on the phone sounded like she would rather be doing anything else besides talking to people. I drive down the next day, and call again when I hit the road to confirm their hours because it's been raining all day. The automated answering voice said open until 5:30PM. I get there at 4PM and no one is there, not even a sign on the front door explaining why they're closed so early. I wasted 2 hours of my Saturday for nothing. I bought a large tree last year from them, and unforunatley it didn't make it through the winter. After some debate they agreed to replace the tree for me. Apparently they don't have a 1 yr guarantee for their plants. Joey answered all my emails fairly promptly, and was a real pleasure to deal with. I found most of the staff very attentive and courteous, as long as you can get a hold of one. It's a pretty busy yard. Overall I would recommend this nursery. read more

If you want poor customer service and poor quality landscaping materials, then sure buy from Bartons. Otherwise go to any other place where they actually value their customers like the wonderful Coppola garden center in south Plainfield. They have fantastic customer service unlike the employees at Bartons. The owner and his son are rude. They consistently delivered the wrong products and then tried to charge us $90 for pick up of the INCORRECT PRODUCT THEY DELIVERED and additionally for the delivery of the "correct product". In trying to speak with the rude owner and his son about how we didn't feel this was right as it was THEIR error, the response we got from the owner and his son was "we don't need this hassle from you. Go inside and get your money back. Go away and go somewhere else! You're costing us too much money" I couldn't believe the words that came out of their mouth. No respect for their customers. No apology for the wrong delivery (this is the second time we had this problem with them) and no care in the world to keep customers and make it right. They are a Money hungry company not a nice family owned company like they claim on their website. Read all the other posted reviews before you buy there! You will see much of the same ! read more

I ventured over to Barton's in search of a few trees just to be very frustrated and very disappointed. Like the other reviews stated, their customer service was not only rude but ignored me while I was standing in their office. I waited for someone to ask me if I needed help and mind you I was the only person in the office at the time. Two women were just too busy and did not even acknowledge me. I asked if someone can help me and they said they would get a sales person and stand outside. The sales person came and said what is it you want? When I told him, he told me I had to go back in the office and they can help. At that point I said "you are so unhelpful" and walked out, got in my car and drove off. I will never be returning to that place again. It is so sad that a business today can treat their customers in such a way that you will never return.
