Wanted a really good cake for my birthday so we stopped here and picked up a cake. It was chocolate with chocolate frosting. It was not a bakery quality cake at all! It was very bland and tastes as if it was a frozen cake made in a factory not baked and frosted in a bakery! Very disappointed. I will not be buying another cake from this "bakery". The reubens are the best. French macaroons, taste like they are frozen boxed from Trader Joe's. The Burnt Almond Tourte for $19 was a huge disappointment. Everyone knows Prantle's in Pittsburgh has the best and is know for it all across America. I tried it and it didn't come close. Too much artificial flavoring and the cake was too heavy. If it was cupcake wars, the judges would destroy them. How about this, don't call it a burnt almond forte and we will still be friends. read more

Have been to Bartram about 6 times now. I like to go to a place a few times before leaving a review. Can't say much about the lunch menu since we always got the desserts and pastries. Overall quality of the food is 3 stars, location is 4 stars, cleanliness is 3.5 stars, and the service is 2 stars. The most consistent negative is the disgruntled staff. Always seem to be inconvenienced by your presence. The most consistent positive is the pleasant atmosphere and late hours. read more

Love this place. A perfect spot for lunch, snack, a treat or just coffee. They have a fair amount of vegetarian options and plenty of seating. Bathrooms are clean and it's also kid friendly. I hadn't been here since shortly after they opened. I came in to try a couple cookies and wasn't overly impressed so I hadn't been back. I was short on lunch options today because the food around here is so uninspired and decided to give them a try. It's a really nice looking place with a good lunch menu. The service was very good and I thought the prices were fine for hand made quality product. Here's the thing, they don't know much about food and the execution is very bad. Pretty typical of the Pittsburgh area. I had the California Club. Chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and guacamole on some sort of white bread pretending to be focaccia? The quality of ingredients was excellent. The chicken was so dry and rubbery I literally couldn't chew it. It was unseasoned and the whole sandwich was dry and tasteless. I took the chicken off and tried some salt and pepper. The wrong kind of salt and the cheap kind of pepper really couldn't help this sandwich in any event. I didn't catch the pesto, there was supposed to be pesto. Would have helped. The bread was really terrible. Like Wonder Bread. Hopeless. Marinate your chicken and make it a little more tender. Cook it carefully until it is just barely underdone, it will continue to cook after you pull it. Season it before you cook it or marinate it like I said. Just really poor food knowledge. Great ideas but no one to pull them off. read more

I'm sad that there are so many bad reviews on here. I've never had a bad experience yet. My only complaints are that the wait is usually very long, the tables are kind of uncomfortably close together, and they're overpriced. Don't get me wrong, their food is good, but I feel like the prices should be about 30% lower for the quality. When it isn't super crowded it's more comfortable, but it's almost almost busy and cramped. I basically go here for the desserts, which are great. read more

I normally have nothing but good things to say. My last visit was unappealing. I ordered the two eggs breakfast with sausage. My first bite of the sausage was cold to taste and by physically touching with my finger. I asked the waitress for another serving of sausage as mine was cold. I was brought new sausage, and it was still cold. The waitress came back and asked how my second serving of sausage was, I replied that it was still cold. My complaint was never resolved. I essentially paid for over priced scrambled eggs, cup of fruit, and a croissant. Left the location very unsatisfied in customer service and quality of food. Does the kitchen not own a thermometer and not know that sausage needs to be cooked to 165°F? read more

The food is very good. The deserts are beautiful but sometimes a bit over the top rich for me but if you love a sugar over load this place will be a sugar ecstasy! The decor is classic hip coffee shop. Sometimes the staff can be a little unfriendly. It just depends who is working. It has sort of a New York feel. I always have a great experience with the kind staff at Bartrams. The food is always excellent, the pepperoni rolls are perfect, and the desserts always hit the spot. However, the own must be extremely cheap or extremely unobservant, as the espresso machine is out of service probably about 80% of the time I go there. Really great French toast. Comes with ample syrup and butter on side. Also had the home fries that comes with sauteed red onion and green peppers. Coffee was rich and tasty. Lots of seating for a small place. Only complaint is that store front is all window, which is nice, but hard to find a spot outside the blinding rays of sun! Overpriced for what you get. I asked for fries instead of chips and it wasn't until I got my receipt that I realized they charged me for the chips AND $4 for "boardwalk fries." Which are essentially frozen steak fries that taste like they were deep fried and probably left under a hot lamp for about 45 minutes before served. The Philly Cheese Steak was really good, but not worth $9.99 plus the cost of the fries. My coworker got a Filet Salad and we assumed that she would be charged the lunch portion which was $9.99 but she was charged the $13.99 price instead. There was about a pound worth of blue cheese on there and hardly any filet. Now onto the deserts. I had the pumpkin cheesecake and it was mediocre at best. My coworker had the Chocolate Cake with Italian Buttercream which was bland and tasteless. Service was also lackluster. We stood around for 10 minutes before anyone came to help us. Employees were walking around and doing anything but helping us. My verdict is to pass on this place. She decided today to order 2 Chicken Salad sandwiches on a Croissant (One for her and the other for me) for lunch. We could only eat half of it. Honestly one of the worst places I've ever eaten. We paid over $40 for two orders of French toast (one order is literally one piece of French toast cut onto pieces on a plate), two orders of home fries and one order of scrambled eggs. I asked the cashier if the cinnamon roll latte was any good and she rudely replied "very but you won't be trying it because our machine is down" with a smirk. There was no seating and we stood around waiting for someone to clean off two tables which had been vacant for at least 10 minutes before we finally asked for one to be cleaned. The cashier walked over and took the plates off and wiped the table down with a paper towel that was already on the table. The only thing that was decent at best was the home fries. I was excited to try this place but we definitely won't be returning and I definitely wouldn't recommend my worst enemy here. Terrible food and customer service. read more

A friend of mine took us to the Wexford Bartram House Bakery, and we loved it, so when we passed the McMurray location at lunchtime the other day, we couldn't help to not stop. Luckily, it was as good as the other location. If you've never been to Bartram, the best way to describe it is like a local version of Panera. They have delicious pastries, cookies, and awesome biscotti, and bake their own bread. They have a huge menu for breakfast and awesome sandwiches for lunch, and even ice cream and good coffee. One thing I appreciate in multiple locations is consistency, and these guys got it down. The layout was very similar to the Wexford location, albeit a bit smaller. The same gray and black decor met us with a big glass wall separating us from delicious sweets, and the signature jars of biscotti were filled and gleaming. The place is modern and inviting, with crisp design lines and clean sitting areas. There's even tables outside if you want to enjoy some fresh air. Both times I've been to Bartram's, the quality has been exceptional. I had a New Orleans Po-Boy sandwich that had andouille sausage, fresh roasted chicken, and in house baked bread. The sandwich was big, flavorful, and fresh, and was only $7.99 with chips and a pickle. I added mac & cheese as a side which is thick and cheesy. My wife ordered the crabcake sandwich, and it had lots of crab meat and flavorful breadcrumbs, topped with pepper strips and a remoulade sauce. My previous visit, I had a California chicken sandwich that had roasted chicken and avocados, and I had it with a tomato bisque soap that tasted amazing. I finished my meal with a macaroon, and took home an anise biscotti that was amazing. In all, Bartram's has fresh, quality food, and you can tell they care about what they're serving. It's a great alternative for fast casual food and worth the stop if you're in the area. read more

Update is that it was pretty wonderful in here tonight. The coffee was 10 times better than last time....they now have a very tasty house blend. I had the key lime pie and it was delicious. If your signs says 10pm on Saturdays, stay open until 10pm! 2nd time this week we've driven to this location, more than 5 minutes before they close to pick up a quick baked good, only to get there and they are closed before the stated time on the sign!!! At least 2 staff inside, but they lock the door and just look at you. Typical minimum wage "customer service." Food and baked goods are excellent, but pricey. Avoid this place, unless you're going well before close and are sure they're open. Not worth the wasted trips. read more

Pretty sure the pear chicken salad I ate was one of the best salads I've ever had. All the flavors were great, so much so that I didn't need to add the dressing! Tried 3 desserts and all were great.... Key lime pie, flour less chocolate cake, & chocolate sugar cookie. Also had a fantastic spicy sausage tortellini soup. Wanted to love this place given we live in the area and it truly has beautiful decor. It looks like a place you would find in San Francisco, not Peters Twp. You walk in and the dessert window hits you in the face and they look unbelievably luscious. I had one of their 'specialties' which was a toasted almond cake. It looked gorgeous and was studded with toasted almonds on the outside. It tasted HORRIBLE. The cake was so dry and dense, if I whipped it against the wall, I bet I would have left a dent. The icing was nothing but butter and a little sugar - imagine unsalted butter with a pinch of sugar and you have their icing. Since the cake was cold, the icing cracked into butter shards with each fork. The idea that they could not make a better butter cream is amazing. The cake actually tasted old. When I say old, I mean not yesterday's cake but last month's cake. My wife had some chocolate fruit cup that was not bad and a nice use of making a chocolate formed cup. It was OK, but after that cake... We won't be back which is a shame. read more

I believe the chocolate mountain cake has been the go to for almost every single persons birthday at my place of employment. I can't think of one thing I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. The smores bar is fantastic, the cupcakes are moist and the perfect treat :) The food, especially the soup, is great. When I know I need a cake for a special event, I know this is exactly where I will go. This is my go to place for breakfast on the weekends and I'm always very satisfied with the food. The service however, is very very slow and some of the employees aren't very friendly. The past two times I went there and I wanted to get a smoothie. The first time they said they couldn't make me one because they were using the blender for something else; the second time the said they couldn't because they were out of yogurt. This is a shame because their smoothies are very tasty but I don't know if I'll be back to TRY to get one again. read more
