This place was great! Exceeded my expectations. The pastries truly taste like French pastries and everything was very reasonably priced...I was impressed. They had a good selection (and they even list the phonetic English pronunciation below the French names on the name cards) and service was friendly. Went with friends on a Sunday morning and we ordered the olive fougasse (which they even heated up for us), a plain croissant, a kouign amann, a pain au chocolat, and a panier framboise. Literally everything was great. The croissant was flaky and soft and buttery...it had the exact texture you expect in a perfect croissant. The panier framboise was topped with creme brûlée and fresh raspberries and was a nice change of pace. The fougasse was the perfect texture and salty combination...everything we tried was truly delicious. I will be back for sure! Merci, La Gourmandine!

I got a classic Parisian sandwich warmed up. I recommend adding a an extra slice of cheese because it doesn't come with enough to cover the bread. Bread is very fresh, the baguete was amazing. It's is small and cozy inside and there is a great big window for light.

4.5 stars. La Gourmandine is a local bakery chain. This location in the Oakland neighborhood recently opened. I ate here one time. An employee immediately greeted me, and she courteously recommended a couple of baked goods that I might enjoy. In the display cases, I saw Gourmandise, Fougasse, Choco Amandes, Brioche Bostock, Croissant Amandes, Baguettes, Chouquettes, Abricotine, Key Lime Tart, Marquise, Tarte au Citron, Eclair au Chocolat, Delice de Pistache, Opera, quiches, sandwiches, etcetera. Prices were a few to several dollars each. I chose a Macarons aux Fruits, Tarte aux Framboises, and Panier Framboise. I thought that they all tasted good but not quite as excellent as I remember from other locations of La Gourmandine.

This review is long overdue. I've been buying food and coffee from the Downtown location since my…read morefirst year of college (five years ago). The atmosphere inside is immediately welcoming. Few tables line the walls, but if you're lucky enough, you can claim one right before the lunch rush, when PNC employees raid the place and the soup sells out. If you stop by frequently enough, Charlie, Matt, or another employee might learn your name. The baristas are kind, personable, and have always made any mistake right. Forget the decadent desserts, hot coffee, or savory sandwiches; I keep coming back because I feel respected here. LaGourmandine is tasty, no question. But at this location? It's particularly loving and feels like home. There is free Wi-Fi, and no better place to get work done while enjoying lunch Downtown. My only complaint: be sure to say whether it's for here or to go when checking out. According to an employee, a small paper cup holds more coffee than a small ceramic cup. But coffee tastes much better in ceramic; I hate when it's mistakenly poured into paper.

Sigh. I saw that they had ceramic cups, including espresso sized cups. I ordered an espresso for…read morehere. And then they handed me a paper cup with a plastic lid. So disappointing! I try so hard not to waste materials with single use cups. I carry a travel cup. If they had only had paper cups, I would have given the barista my travel cup. I explained this, and she poured it into a (cappuccino sized!) ceramic cup for me. The espresso is good, but I prefer the espresso at Yinz, so probably won't come here again. That said, the quiches look really good here...

Honestly nothing too special, and quite a bit more expensive than at other places in the city and in the area. The frosting was pretty good, pretty rich, but the brownie itself was fairly dry.
