Inferior staff. There were several tables empty inside which were reserved for a party that was supposed to arrive an hour later. Instead of just asking us if we would like it for an hour, we would have taken it or not. That would be a choice that should have been offered to a customer who walks in asking for a particular seating. Those tables stayed empty and the entire time we were there having our bottle of wine. When I explained that and gave feedback before leaving, they didn't seem to really care. I'm leaving as an unhappy customer. read more

Wine was good, patio was nice, waitress was nice and attentive, brussel sprouts were to die for. However when we received our bill, a 20% service fee was added to the bill, none of which goes to the wait staff for tip. So on top of our bill we had a 20% service fee that we weren't told about until after we ate, and is only mentioned in very fine print at the very bottom of the menu. Why on earth wouldn't you just mark up the food 20% instead of a mostly hidden 'service fee'? Seems super shady and did not leave a good taste in our mouths. We probably won't be back to this place. If you do go, make sure to tip your wait staff as the 'service fee' isn't a tip. read more

Really nice tasting room. After wandering up the entrance driveway, passing through then"main house" arch you arrive at the parking lot. Walk into the tasting room for $10 you can taste six wines - two whites and four reds. Great cab franc grapes, and can sauv - both as a red and as a white (!). Tasting room servers are friendly and have good local knowledge. 4 stars because wines are a bit expensive for the area -average $30 with some $50 a bottle. Tastings are $10 per, fully reimbursable if you buy a bottle. Best view bar none. Worth a stop. read more

My girlfriend and I were on a wine tasting tour of Walla Walla the day after Valentine's day. We had a wine passport, and one of the locations on it that offered a free tasting was Basel Cellars. There were several other local wineries on the list, but many of them were closed on Sunday which I find to be quite annoying. Only Chick Fil A is worthy of being closed on a Sunday. Anyway, we were glad that Basel Cellars was one of the few open places on our list, so we decided to check it out. The Basel Estate is located high on a hill with a beautiful view of the vineyard. The estate is super fancy mansion which must clearly host tons of weddings. They have an outdoor courtyard area complete with a cornhole board and two sets of bean bags. We entered the stylish and spacious tasting room. We were the only customers at the time, so it was a little bit awkward standing in such a large empty place. Our server was friendly though she didn't seem like she really cared if we were there or not. The wines were good, but not remarkable. After our tasting we played a leisurely game of cornhole and enjoyed the sunny weather in their courtyard. I think it would be fun to return to Basel on more lively day. It seems like a good place to bring a group of friends for wine tasting and hanging out. read more

This is a split review: wine and estate. The wines are good, maybe a little high priced for the quality (I am a boutique wine fan so am a bit biased against large volume wineries). The draw is the destination. This is a true estate/.destination. A lovely building with facilities for large or small functions. In fact, there are rooms to stay in should you have a wedding etc and stay over. Even a swimming pool for the guests. read more

I really enjoyed this winery! It was very quiet when we went for Holiday Barrel tasting, but that was nice since we got a chance to chat with the staff and winemaker. Their reds impressed me much more than their whites. I went home with a bottle of Malbec, but I also joined their wine club. I liked that they had an option for 3 bottles and I can pick it up in Woodinvile. The only reason I knocked down a star was because they were out of so many wines that were featured on their board. Apparently they sold out before the tasting room received them due to wine club membership? I found that a little odd, especially since I was interested in quite a few. Basal Cellars was quite the lovely venue. My friend and I came here for a tasting based on the recommendation of a friend. While we found the house, grounds, and tasting room to be beautiful, the wine was underwhelming. It was not bad, but it did not stand out either and I felt no inclination to leave with a bottle. The girls who were pouring did not come across as very knowledgeable about either the Basal Cellars label or wine in general, although they were sweet and friendly. I would recommend a visit with a group of friends if looking for a beautiful place to hang out. There are lawn games available and ample seating. The grounds are fun to walk around as well. You may find a wine that you like; it was just not to my taste. read more

Wonderful. Amazing. Delicious. Caleb welcomed us right as we walked in. We were traveling across country with our two kids (8 and 2) plus a dog and they were all too accommodating for all. The weather was gorgeous (70 in Nov!) so we sat outside while the dog and kids ran around the property. Caleb came outside each time to serve our next pour. JC and other staff members all stopped and welcomed us to the estate. Could not be more impressed with the service AND wine. My husband and I are currently into Malbec's and all their wine (including their Malbec) was delicious; not one complaint. The tasting room sits on top of a hill so you can see how the vineyard sits right below the mountain which is absolutely b-e-a-utiful! If I could give this place a million stars I would! First off, Woody is amazing. He went out of his way to help us get our trip scheduled around a golf tournament we were in town for. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a wine tasting and the friendliest staff. Woody helped us get a bin to transfer our luggage then gave us a tour. I was in shock at how huge the place was and all the amenities it offered. In the main house there was an awesome hot tub room, massage tables, theatre, pool table, darts, party room, etc. Then you go out to the large pool area where there is a huge outdoor kitchen and pool house. The pool is so much fun, they have plenty of floaties for you to use (and a pump for air) and the BEST water slide. There are 2 very large outdoor fireplaces and the most incredible sound system throughout the entire property. On the first day, Woody brought us a bottle of red and a bottle of white to the pool that were so delicious. I can't rave enough about how incredible this place was and how incredible the staff was. We already booked again for next year because we had such a blast and I can't wait!!!! read more

Original review - I'm only reviewing this to let Basel know that they let us down. Their tasting room hours are posted clearly as starting at 10am. My wife and I showed up around 10:30 and no one was there. The door was open we stood next to the counter for over 10 minutes before giving up and leaving. My wife even called their phone twice and no one picked up. Bummer guys. Not that we would, but we could have easily just taken stuff and no one would ever be the wiser because no one was there! Visited this out-of-the-way, "are we on the right road?" winery because of the pretty pictures on the internet. And the wines scored pretty decent on wine spectator - so off we went map in hand. This is the type of place you get married. Sits on top of a hill with a resort/mansion available for rent. Outdoor seating would be a perfect place for a lunch. I saw the tasting room host run out to the veranda a couple times to refill some glasses - very nice touch. Wish we could have spent more time here. Plan on picking up a lunch and spending a couple hours here to enjoy the great wine and views. read more

We have belonged to Basil Cellars for over 4 years. The wines are delicious and just continue to improve! (New winemaker Dirk.) Their signature blends Inspiration and Merriment are great examples of the blending expertise of the winemakers. Our favorites are the Malbec, DRV Syrah, Carmenere. The staff at the winery and the Woodinville tasting room are so friendly and knowledgeable! Beautiful grounds - a must just for the scenery. Definitely the most beautiful in Walla Walla. We ended up chatting with our wine pourer for over 30 minutes. While the grounds were lovely, the person providing the wine tasting did the 'bare minimum'. She came outside occasionally to see if we were ready for the next in the tasting list. She mumbled the wine as she quickly poured out the ounce then walked away. We tried engaging her in conversation to learn a bit more about the wine and the winery but the only time she gave more than a one-sentence answer was when we talked about her dog. Very disappointing. The wines were good, but the experience was not. We did not end up buying a bottle, although we did at all other Walla Walla wineries, because we didn't want to have it as a memory from our time in the area. It's a shame the owner has employees who so poorly represent their brand. read more

We reserved a tasting appointment based on fairly good ratings, being unfamiliar with the area (Walla Walla) we decided to book an appointment. Our hired DD driver gave us a heads up-beautiful facility but wines were so-so. We went ahead with our plans in this appointment only environment. We are seasoned wine tasters and, yes, found the wines to be so-so and the facility to be stunning. The biggest disappointment came from the service. Our pourer brought our our selected flights, described the first wine in our selected flights And then said she would be back. We did not see her again until quite some time had passed, enough time for us to taste the other wines on our own. Even when we checked out at the counter, she said a quick thank you and was gone. I understand the facility has B&B accommodations so the emphasis has been on that aspect of their business endeavors. As new owners, you might want to pay closer attention to the service and wines. read more

Context note: this review is based on a visit nearly two years ago. It was a very pleasant experience. As far as the physical grounds go, I think this was my favorite among the wineries we visited in Walla Walla. Very charming and well-landscaped. The tasting room itself was nice enough though nothing special. The wines were hit and miss, but I remember trying a couple that were really, really good and not too expensive. The experience with the staff was nothing special, putting Basel overall behind other wineries we have visited. read more

This was the number one stop on my list and sadly I did not care for any of the wines we tried. The person serving us was very nice, and wasn't bothered at all when we didn't buy a bottle. This seemed strange to me, there was a wedding going on while we were there and they still allowed tastings. We drove by the newly married couple as they stared uncomfortably at us. read more

My colleague and I were traveling on business and managed to get some free time to check out Walla Walla's world renowned wine industry. We used yelp and stumbled upon Basel Cellars. As soon as we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the wine server. The Winery grounds are absolutely breathtaking, even from the parking lot! After 45 minutes of wine tasting, we were lucky enough to meet Brian Biagi, Cellar Master. Brian kindly shared with us his world of wine making by providing us with a personal tour of the entire estate, from the house grounds to the integrate history of wine making at Basel Cellars. Needless to say, we were very impressed with the level of hospitality and wine quality we experienced. We expected to just taste a couple wines and learn a little bit about the area, we ended up receiving more than we bargained for! Not only is the wine here absolutely delicious, this is the most BEAUTIFUL estate you've ever been. My cousin had her wedding here, and we had access to roam the grounds as well as spend the day at the gorgeous pool, complete with water slide! We ended up visiting nearly 15 wineries during our time in Walla Walla and this one was definitely the most beautiful, and probably had some of the best wines as well. The girl pouring our wine was one of the rudest people I have some across. She was rude, didn't even tell us what wine she was pouring, and overall ruined our experience.
