We ordered some hot sake, small, 4.5 shots. Very hot at 1st but cools down rather quickly. We ordered a pear martini that was really good, a bit sweet for me so I added some Sriracha. It worked! Regarding Detroit's Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant: I've eaten at this location for years. In fact, I've eaten at previous restaurants at that location even prior to Shangri-La opening there. The food at Shangri-La simply checks the Chinese Food box when I have a taste for it. Today, I decided to have a work lunch there, and sat with my laptop for a while, even after I was finished eating. The service was excellent (in comparison to my usual experience), and so my plan was to take good care of the waitress. I had never seen her before, and assumed her to be new staff. She returned to my table to check in with me at least three times. When waitress brought the bill, the amount seemed to be off. I studied the handwritten bill further, and realized there was a 20% tip added to my bill. This was a quandary for me because the $7 and something gratuity was less than I intended to leave her, but I was incensed with the idea that it had been added without my consent. I explained my concern to her, and she pointed to the desk where the manager (or owner) typically stands and stated that this was the restaurant's policy. Moments later, he arrived at my table and explained that, "some people come and they don't tip." His arrogant tone was odd to me because this person has seen me at least once every several months for years. I explained to him that this plan of his is a bad idea, but he didn't appear to care about my position. He mentioned that the policy is printed on the menu, however I ordered without looking at the menu. But, what was most disgusting was his response, "if you can't afford to pay a tip, you shouldn't come out to eat." His facial expression and body language exhibited years of old racial animosity and anxiety. I should mention, just prior to my leaving, a Black couple left the restaurant after disputing an issue with the same manager/owner. The subject of the dispute was not clear, but I did hear the gentleman explaining that he had been eating at this location, "for years," and didn't like how something "was handled." Finally, I come here to Yelp and survey the comments before writing my own, and here is another Black customer, from Los Angeles, protesting the manager/owner, "following her out to her car over a tip." So, there's the secondary issue on this policy. Not only are there folks who might not be able to afford a tip at any given time, but there is the right of customers to determine what their tip should be based upon the service they perceive the server provided. In my case, I tipped the waitress above and added gratuity. I needed for her to be clear that my concern had nothing to do with her. But, the manager/owner person left a horrible taste in my mouth - so much so that I threw my unhealthy leftovers in the garbage. Never again. This man's (unintelligent and likely racist) assumption that I could not "afford to tip" will be his last opportunity to be in conversation with me. I won't be back. read more

manager/owner followed me out to my car to inquire about me "forgetting to tip" which I had not.. I'm a frequent customer and have always tipped so I'd never seen this side of her. I paid my bill in full and saw no reason nor had any reason to tip any extra to my server who was in the middle of training a new server. After posting it on social media I found that more than a few people have had someone follow them outside harassing about a tip. Stop the greed and pay your workers a fair wage. In today's economy it shouldn't be expected for every person who sits down to pay extra for getting their food carried out to them. And following people out the door is never ok. Ended up here on a whim on Valentine's Day. It was a little bit of an odd time that we arrived (before a dinner rush) but only bar seating was available. Seems there is not a lot of seating in general so expect to wait. The bartender was very sweet and patient and had no issue with us asking questions or drinking only water at the bar. (I wanted to try a couple of the drinks I saw on offer but they were just a little pricey and we were on a bit of a tight budget). We ordered 2 dim sum items - BBQ pork buns and I believe dumplings? Legitimately cannot remember the second item because I never took a picture and I remember not liking them as much. The lo mein was a generous portion and it was pretty good but tbh I feel like I could have made it at home and I kept adding soy sauce to it. Overall not a bad place. A truly exceptional Chinese restaurant with amazing dimsum (such as the jar tow, Shumai, steamed dumplings and curried squid). Their main dishes like lo mein and fried grouper with corn chowder and rice were also excellent! Service was also very prompt and attentive. First time having Chinese in the area. A lot of options since they have their regular menu, dim sum menu, and Japanese menu. The regular menu looks to be what they specialize in. I tried the egg foo young and the braised beef brisket and bean curd. Both dishes come with rice. I enjoyed them, they weren't too salty. Stopped here for a quick lunch and everything I tried was delicious! I really liked the Deep-Fried Squid off the Dim Sum menu. I've had this type of dish before, and Shangri-La did a really good job. The squid was just a touch on the chewy side, but not too bad. The batter was wonderfully light and crispy. I would order this again. The Steamed BBQ Pork bun was very good as well. The amount of filling was generous, and the sauce wasn't too sweet. Finally, I tried the Fried Rice with Shrimp and BBQ Pork. The taste of the dish was far more delicate (and less greasy) than many fried rice dishes I've tried. I liked that. The veggies and pork were plentiful. There weren't as many shrimp, but the ones that were added were larger than I would have expected. I enjoyed this dish and would order it again. read more

So, I'm typing this review on a Tuesday night, while I stand in the lobby of the restaurant waiting for a carry out order. Mind you, I tried this place for the first time 3 days ago. Yes, 2 trips to the same restaurant, one that's an hour from my house, in a 3 day period. It's that good. The dim sum offerings are amazing, the red bean bun and sesame ball are the show stoppers. Best I've had in the Detroit area. As far as entrees go, I'm usually moderately adventurous with my Asian food but sometimes a nice basic almond boneless chicken is what is needed. That was the case during visit one. I've been thinking about it ever since, this the return trip. I also got beef Lo mein and sesame chicken today as well. I'm sure they'll be just as good. My son and I walked down Cass Avenue and found this place. It was swamped with a wait of about 10 minutes. It was worth the wait. The sushi looked great, but I had the almond boneless chicken which was darn near perfect. We had draft beers and a college football game played over the bar. I had no idea that this Midtown location of Shangri-La was the same as the WB Shangri-La! Within my family friends and community, we really love that WB Shangri-La and it's definitely considered bougie, but authentic Chinese food. Midtown Shangri-La was more of the same, with a very similar menu from what I can remember and similar pricier prices. The dim sum here is spectacular and Shangri-La goes the extra step to have all these fun cocktails and a couple additional dishes, which feels more "Americanized" for customers as well. I believe they also serve sushi and bubble tea, which is unexpected and makes things feel a bit less authentic, but if you stick to their original menu knowing that they predominantly specialize in Chinese food, then you'll still be able to get a quality and authentic experience! I haven't tried the sushi or bubble tea, so can't speak to those, but they just aren't what I am craving when I go to an establishment like Shangri-La and there is never a lack of dishes that I know Shangri-La makes super well that I AM craving! Basically close your eyes and point to a bunch of spots on the dim sum menu and you'll be cooking with gas in no time! This spot is delicious and I love the Midtown location for its ease of access by Wayne State and a few blocks down from Cass Corridor, while also having such cute interiors as well! We came here for a midday dim sum meal on a weekday around Thanksgiving and it was very quiet. The space is smaller than their WB location, which focuses more on family style seating if memory serves, so the vibes are totally different, but I love them both just the same! read more
