We have been wanting to try this restaurant, but of course getting a desired reservation has been a little tricky because it's a new popular restaurant. I stumbled up on a 830 reservation on a Saturday, the same day! So shout out to whoever canceled their reservation. LOL It is a restaurant alley, so you have to find parking. However, there is a Valet service where you can pay $20 and leave your car there until 2 AM. We walked right in, and we sat almost immediately for our reservation. We had such an amazing waiter. He was very smooth with his words and was really charming. We started off with a sushi roll and cocktails while we perused the menu to figure out what we wanted for dinner. We decided to share the Szechuan chicken accompanied with Jasmine rice. We also ordered the ginger Miso salad. The dinner entrée is enough for 2 to 3 people to share with the exception of needing to add an extra side of rice if you are a rice lover. We enjoyed every part of our meal. We were celebrating a birthday, so we received a complementary dessert which was not on the menu, but it was fantastic. I'd love to try this place out for happy hour one day! read more

I took my best friend here for her birthday dinner and, unfortunately, the experience was incredibly disappointing. Our reservation was for 8:15 p.m. I called ahead to let the restaurant know we would be arriving around 8:35-8:40 due to parking difficulties. The hostess assured us it was completely fine, gave us parking advice, and mentioned that parking might take a little time but that we would find something. When we arrived, however, it was immediately apparent that our late arrival was being treated as a problem. We were reminded that our reservation was at 8:15, despite having called ahead. The hostess then acted as though she was doing us a huge favor by finding us a table. Once seated, we noticed several empty tables throughout the evening, making the interaction feel unnecessarily uncomfortable. One of the hosts gave us a wonderful introduction to the restaurant, explained the specials, and shared some background about the owner. That was honestly one of the highlights of the evening. Based on recommendations from friends, I was excited to try several dishes. We ordered the spicy edamame, crispy rice with spicy tuna, Brussels sprouts, chicken pad thai, the Gambler Roll, and the Panda Roll. The spicy edamame arrived severely undercooked and wasn't spicy at all--just salted edamame with a few thin slices of red pepper. After trying a few pieces, we realized they were too hard to eat. While waiting to get our server's attention, we moved on to the Brussels sprouts, which were extremely dry and difficult to eat. We waited approximately 25 minutes before we were able to tell anyone about the issue. Our server was nowhere to be found, so we eventually explained the problem to a busser. When our server finally came over, he seemed annoyed and asked what was wrong. He offered to have the chef remake the edamame and bring additional vinaigrette for the Brussels sprouts. Fifteen minutes later, we still had not received the vinaigrette and had to remind someone. The replacement edamame eventually arrived after most of our other food had already been served. This time it was overcooked to the point that the texture was falling apart, and it still wasn't spicy. The chicken pad thai was average and nothing memorable. The Gambler Roll was actually very enjoyable and one of our favorite items of the night. The Panda Roll, however, was covered in so much sauce that it felt out of place for a restaurant at this level, especially considering it had been recommended by our server. At one point, the same hostess who had seated us kindly showed me where the restrooms were located. While speaking with her, I confirmed that our reservation still noted we were celebrating a birthday. I mentioned that I planned to order dessert, and she told me the restaurant also provided a birthday dessert. Unfortunately, no birthday dessert ever arrived, and we were never offered a dessert menu. At the end of the meal, after paying, I mentioned to our server, Devante, that it was my friend's birthday. He simply said "Happy Birthday" and walked away. What was most frustrating was the service. My friend and I had not seen each other in a long time, so we chose not to make a scene and instead focused on enjoying our time together. However, the lack of attention became impossible to ignore. We did not receive our bill until nearly midnight, and that was only after trying to get someone's attention for roughly 30 minutes. We eventually asked a neighboring server for help. When our server finally came over, instead of providing a printed receipt, he verbally listed every item we had ordered to verify the bill. I've never experienced that at a restaurant of this caliber. After I paid, I mentioned that I wasn't particularly happy with how the evening had gone. His response was essentially, "Have a good night, guys. Happy birthday." To make matters worse, every dirty dish remained on our table throughout most of the evening. I requested to-go boxes, but after waiting another 15 minutes, we realized he had forgotten them. Once again, I had to ask the server assisting the neighboring table. He was kind enough to bring the boxes and help package our food. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience fell far below expectations. My family took me here for Father's Day and we had a great time. We had a reservation. I got there on time, but the rest of my party was running behind. The hostess sat me anyway, which I love. I can't stand that restaurant policy where they won't seat you until the full party arrives. We didn't order until 30 minutes after our reservation started, and we were not rushed at all by our server, Sydney, which I also appreciated. The food comes out as it is prepared, and it is intended to be shared with the table. We had a bunch of different dishes, and everything was very good. My only knock was that the drink offerings are a little confusing. There is a separate and extensive drink menu, but there was also a cocktail menu on the back of the main menu. My daughter ordered what she thought was a cocktail containing sake, and what she got instead was a very healthy shot that she couldn't finish. Overall, a great start to a great evening. read more

Walked in without a reservation on a Friday evening, and was able to snag a couple of seats at the sushi bar, which does have full menu service. Huge menu! Definitely pretty pan-Asian fusion, with what seems like a touch of extra influence from Filipino and Japanese fare. I really liked that they had some specials for AAPI heritage month too. I loved the Meiji Margarita, with passionfruit, and had two. The food was all beautifully presented, but kind of mixed in how much I liked it! The standout bites were: - Escolar "The Great White" which was two escolar nigiri with truffle vinaigrette, potato chip, and black truffle shavings. Absolutely delicious 10/10. - Massaman Scallops which came in a shallow bowl of curry and corn, okra, squash veggies. The other dishes I tried were also all good! Just less amazing, and for the prices I was hoping for more amazing. - Miso Cauliflower. The miso in this actually wasn't too forward. - Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice. The rice base wasn't actually crispy and I think this could've used just a touch more seasoning. - Lobster Lumpia. This was one of the specials! Good and can actually taste the lobster which was nice. But still fairly close to regular spring rolls which are a lot less expensive. - Midori Roll. Beautiful and unique! The mix of ingredients ended up kind of de-emphasizing the hamachi a touch. Conveniently located next to (in between) the Fox and the Fillmore! We fined her before a show at the Fox Theater and it did not disappoint! We sat at the bar and got great service from the bartenders. We started with cocktails. The grass Tiger was well balanced and a nice presentation. The bartenders suggest we try the miso cauliflower and it was a knockout dish. We love that it was not breaded and cooked perfectly. I found this place. I was heading to the Tigers game. We decided to sit in and get a quick drink and a snack and I was not disappointed. On this Tuesday afternoon, it was relatively busy. My drink was mixed just right and the presentation was on point. I did have the miso soup, which was a little cool to my liking, but OK. I prefer hot soup, but that's a personal preference. I tried the sushi after going through the whole menu trying to decide-- the Gamble sushi. The presentation was so cute with a casino chip to be used on my next visit. The gamble sushi was interesting as there was one hot piece of sushi out of the bunch. I would say that it is spicy, but it was just right you hit the spot. I've heard great things about Sunda Chicago, so was excited to finally try it here in Detroit. The location is perfect if you're going to an event, show at the Fox or Fillmore which was our case. It's walkable! The menu is pan Asian from Japanese to fusion to Korean to Filipino which made me very wary at first. Usually it means you do...none of it well. But, I was pleasantly surprised! We had the: *Crispy Brussels sprout salad: this thing was huge!! Also I thought I was over Brussels sprouts but this was pretty dang delicious! *Hotate Sashimi - appreciate how this was served/presented and the temperature was perfect. Tasted really fresh too! *Bulgogi Roti Tacos (sliced sesame soy marinated ribeye, roti prata, red cabbage slaw) - Recommended by our server. These were so fire and a generous portion. We just finished eating at Sunda Detroit for the first time. I tried to make a reservation but none were available for Sat night. With that said, the hostess told me they take many walk ins and they hope to see me tonight so we decided to wing it! The place was pretty packed and there was a Red Wings game so parking wasn't easy. We found a spot and got to the restaurant around 8:30pm. After a bit of a wait, we were sat at the sushi bar, which was not my preference. We were seated at the same time as another couple and shared the same server. They space out the courses nicely which I appreciated since we didn't have too much space. The crab hand roll was really good. It came in two half cone pieces. We then got the brussel sprout salad, which is the one thing I remember loving from their Chicago location. If you like brussel sprouts, get this. It does not disappoint. After that, we got the shrimp tempura app, which was pretty good and you got a good amount of shrimp. I definitely expected like 4 shrimp so it was a nice surprise. For the entrees, we split the chicken pad Thai and the Szechuan chicken. The chicken pad thai may have been one of the best pad Thais I've ever had. The Szechuan chicken is the one dish I would sadly never get again. It tasted like black licorice and it was SOO spicy. Tons of hot peppers and onions in this dish. It was a huge portion and I wish I liked it but I honestly took one bite and that's it. The waiter asked how everything was. I said, "everything was great but this one entree." He didn't seem to care as he offered only to box everything up. Oh well. We do have a lot of leftovers for tomorrow so overall, I'm happy to have Sunda in Detroit. Also, there was a lot of hostesses at the stand and they are helping a lot of people at once. They try to push people to find their own seats at the cocktail bar and try to save tables for reservations. I really appreciate the one hostess who got us seated. This restaurant is extremely overrated. My entire family was very disappointed. Nothing anyone ordered was particularly special, and everything was overly sweet. The service was good--the staff was friendly, and the food came out in a timely manner. However, the music was so loud that it was difficult to hear the people at our table, which was very frustrating. Overall, the food needs to improve because that is what a restaurant is ultimately about. Everything was overpriced and simply not very good. Came in for a late dinner on a Tuesday night, I made a reservation but the restaurant did not appear to be too busy this evening. Valet parking is available for $20 and if you get a sticker inside you get 50% off! We were sat immediately, I opted for standard seating and I am happy I did because it was very hot today and the patio would've been a sauna. The sushi bar seating is very tiny but nice if you're coming for a quick bite. Our server was knowledgeable and let us know most items are shareable, and he was right! Everything was huge we ordered the fried chicken bao buns 10/10 very big and flavorful. Adobo rice with chicken 10/10, California rolls 10/10 they made these upon request as they are not on the menu. And some baked crab hand rolls, I did not take a picture because I devoured them 10/10. I ordered the strawberry fields cocktail 10/10 was so good I had another. So I'm in love with the Chicago Sunda and was thrilled to see one open in Detroit so I had to go! Totally recommend! The place is chic and sexy and sure to be a great date night or girls night. Food was bomb!! So good! The Brussel sprouts starter was delicious and so plentiful!! I was a teas disappointed in the spicy edamame. Way too salty and buttery. Something was off with it and I usually like it. The wagyu crispy rice!! Absolutely yum! Delicious and highly recommend! Dessert was a fried ice cream/carrot cake concoction and I loved it! Yum! Slightly disappointed in the drinks they were very sweet. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly but we felt rushed. The decor is very fitting and cute although the lighting was way too low. Our server told us each dish is meant to be shared so we ordered a lot. Because they are sharables we were told that each item was going to come out individually as it gets made and not all at once, which was perfectly fine. For drinks we got a lychee simoy cocktail and the espresso martini flight. The lychee was very refreshing but the espresso martini flavors all blended together. The only distinguishing taste from the martinis was the chilli. The miso cauliflower was good but nothing special. We really liked the tuna truffle pizza, island Maki roll, spicy tail of two tunas, and the bulgogi tacos. The truffle pizza was the best out of all of them. The beef lollipops were basically thin kebabs molded around a vegetable root and were very dry. You needed to drown it in the glaze it came with to eat it. The sechuan chicken was very dry as well and just did not do well compared to everything else we ordered. It also was a lot of food in that single dish whereas the others had a good portioning between us. The crispy rice tuna wasnt bad but it wasn't really impressive. Just plain. The Sunda Sundae was also kind of dissapointing. It was beautiful in it's plating but too much going on as well as a very odd smell coming from it that made it hard to eat. The description made it seem like there was shaved ice AND ice cream in it but it was entirely shaved ice. We thought it would have been better as an ice cream. Another server walking by saw us struggling to eat the sundae out of the small bowl it was sitting in and poured it into a larger bowl for us that he said our original server should have done for us. Sunda is a new fave!! Everything we ordered was delicious!! From the moment we walked in, it was like we were transported to a new place. The ambiance and atmosphere were very inviting. We started with the espresso martini trio that featured classic, Ube, and spicy martinis. Next we had a round of appetizers, ranging from dumplings to outstanding Brussel sprouts. Really deserves a 4.5. Food was delicious. The crispy pasta was the best I've ever had. The sushi was fresh and the rolls were creative. The fried rice was good, but I wouldn't order it again (it may be because everything else was just SO amazing that it paled). The service at the bar could not have been more perfect and they worked as a well-oiled team, despite the newness of the restaurant. My biggest and really only complaint was the music. I was so excited to try Sunda! The menu looked amazing. We were heading to a Piston's and secured reservations for 7. Easy parking, lots of parking options close to Columbia Street. We got there at 5:15pm and promptly seated. Our waiter was great! So friendly and walked us through what Sunda has to offer. We started off with drinks - mocktails and cocktails. It took a bit for our drinks, our appetizers came before any of our drinks. I hoping that since this restaurant is new, they are working out the kinks. When our drinks came, one of our drinks was missing. Our appetizers were so delicious! We order the Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, crispy tuna, crispy waygu, lumpia, and the oxtail dumpling. The flavors were on point. So delicious! The Brussels sprouts, oxtail dumplings, and crispy tuna were my favorite! For dinner, we order the pad Thai, adobo chicken friend rice, khao Soi curry veggies, the panda roll, and a bunch of other sushi rolls! The food was great except my khao Soi curry veggies never made it. I attribute this to the kinks of a new restaurant. We sat at the bar, people watching and the atmosphere had a good vibe, with cute décor. The vegetables and shiitake mushrooms were perfectly grilled. The presentation was a beautiful mini tower of vegetables. My biggest complaint was the onion. To my dismay, the tower was built on a big red onion cut in absurd slices. I love onions but not like this. The larger hunks were bitter as raw onion can be. Wow. The food was amazing, like mouth watering. And the service is the real reason I decided to write a review. Our server Garret was spectacular. Great personality, great recommendations that we would've been stupid to miss, and a helpful presence. He was a joy to have and their service in general was wonderful. The manager even came out and said happy father's day to all the tables and shook peoples hands, it felt very personable. Additionally, the atmosphere was a fun night vibe with a perfectly curated playlist. It was darker with good lighting so you didn't have to whip out the flashlight to look at the menu haha. The only thing we tried that we could've easily skipped was the crispy tuna rice surprisingly. Other than that, everything we had was excellent. Highly highly recommend the bulgogi tacos, ginger salad, panda roll, ribeye, coconut cheesecake, and the wagyu lobstor roll without a doubt. If you're feeling adventurous I recommend the challenge of the Gambler roll. Honestly everyone should go here at least once. The reason for my four star review is only because the two women working the front door were so rude it tainted my whole experience. Enough about them though, let's get to the good stuff. I used to live in Chicago and dined at the River North location often, so when I heard a new location was opening up in the D, I was excited. I had the opportunity to check it out last night as a preview and it was nothing short of spectacular. I enjoyed some of my favorite dishes and also tried some new items, and everything was beyond amazing. Incredible flavor with every single bite. Our server, Jeremy, was fantastic. He was attentive and made excellent recommendations. I can't recommend this restaurant enough; not only is the food amazing, but the service, cocktails and ambiance are also fabulous. A few of my favorite dishes are the escolar great white, spicy tuna crispy rice, shrimp tempura, pork belly steamed buns, oxtail potstickers, crab noodles and the crunchy hamachi but you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. I usually don't mind sitting at a sushi bar, but this time was different. We sat there for what felt like an eternity (around the 15 min) & no one even looked at us. Tons of employees walked by us & not one said a word. It was really weird. I would have loved to actually try the food, but we were hungry and felt pretty uncomfortable. Back in the day I worked in the restaurant industry, so I'm understanding if a place is new or super busy (it wasn't), but geez, not a great first impression. If the sushi bar staff said "hello" or made eye-contact it would've made a huge difference. read more
