Ronin Sushi was a highlight of my trip to Royal Oak. After a long day of traveling, and waiting for everyone from the group to get in for the weekend, the plans were up in the air. Ronin saved the day, and was the best decision. We were able to get a table in the first come first serve area by the bar. The wait for a table for 8 was bout 40 minutes (not bad) but the bar area was perfect. The meal was so good. The sushi rolls were so well priced, delicious, and perfect for sharing. I would not recommend the burger, however, everything else was delicious. The chicken lettuce cups and gyoza were the stars of the show. And, of course the drinks. Such a cool spot! Our group of three arrived at 6pm on a Saturday night and although there was an hour ish wait for the dining room, they were able to seat us in the upstairs lounge after waiting only 10 minutes. Once we walked up the stairs, I was pumped to sit up there. The lounge is super cool vibes- dark lighting, some taxidermy but otherwise minimal decor on their wood walls. My friend and I visited during happy hour before a show at the Royal Oak theater. We got there just before the rush. Server was very nice and patient explaining ingredients in the sushi since I was fasting and could only eat vegan. We also ordered the Matcha hot tea. Popped into one of our favorite places on Wednesday night and was surprised to see they were doing happy hour! Apps were cheap and they're all worth it! Happy hour is 5-7 on weekdays. We absolutely love the crab hand roll-- It's a go to for us. Tried the tuna tacos which were amazing and had the perfect amount of kick. I mean the picture of the sushi speaks for itself. Ronin is not my go-to sushi restaurant UNLESS it's during happy hour! They have incredible happy hour deals with quite a few roll and drink options. Food is pretty pricey when it's not HH, but you can taste the quality and freshness. The seating inside is pretty tight but the ambiance is comfortable. I was in Royal Oak for a show at Baldwin Theatre and needed to kill an hour before the doors opened. I was hungry, but not starving, and didn't feel like walking to far from the theatre or my parking spot, and wanted sushi, so off I went.This place is literally a hop, skip and a jump from where I was going! At first I swear I thought the place was vacant?! Don't ask, but there wasn't much signage and I couldn't tell. BUT, when I saw people walking in and out, I knew it was okay. Getting inside and let me tell you, this place was PACKED. It was a large restaurant and was very busy for a Thursday night. I did have to wait about 10 minutes for a seat for a few reasons. The bar area's first come first serve but it was wall to wall people so I decided to wait instead of sitting in other patrons laps to get a happy hour special. They seated me at the sushi bar in the corner which was perfect since I wasn't squished with other people. I was just squished in a corner which I was totally cool with. They have a decent menu with extensive offerings but can get pricey depending on what you order. Fortunately, they have a happy hour menu which was right up my alley at that given moment. They had two dishes that drew me in and I almost ordered both. One was a unique twist on crab rangoons which I love and the other was a 6 piece salmon sushi roll that I ended up ordering. My server was really awesome especially considering just how busy this place was. She took my order and was able to answer all my questions about the dishes I was interested in. Food here was very good and I loved the decor of the place. My whole bill was $9.54?!?!?! If I'd gone with the crab rangoon dish it would've been an another $8 or whatever. not bad to walk out full for under $20 in Royal Oak during happy hour...that's a win for me! There's even a parking garage kitty corner to the restaurant that's across from the Baldwin theatre that has the first two hours free and only 75 cents an hour after that. Man, I got lucky! I will say the staff was fantastic from the two hostesses to the servers. They really handled being busy like champions and treated me well. I love it here and will return in the future. read more

Pretty average sushi experience overall. Probably fresh enough fish, but the rolls were about 70% rice and 30% ambition. Definitely more of a "California roll and cream cheese" vibe than a Tokyo experience; let's just say it's sushi for people named Chad and Becky (no shame, we all have our days). They tried to hit us with a $20 plating fee for bringing our own cake but redeemed themselves by keeping it chilled instead. Service was friendly and fast. We were seated immediately on a Sunday evening. The tables are all really close to each other which is kind of annoying but not a huge deal. The drinks had a lot of alcohol in them which I really appreciated. The jalapeno margarita was delicious. The yellowtail sashimi was good, and the tuna tartar was just ok. Our new favorite sushi spot!! In addition to a lengthy regular menu, they have a special menu that changes each month, and we really enjoyed the scallop roll from that menu. We also were there during happy hour, and enjoyed the nigiri trio off that menu. The spicy salmon crunch roll was delightful! One could argue this is the best sushi restaurant in Metro Detroit. We went for happy hour which turned into happy hours. Started with the house cab which was strong and full bodied, but not overwhelming. In our first round of ordering, we got: gyoza, fried clams, crispy rice spicy tuna, kobe sliders, and tuna tartare tacos. The gyoza were very good. The fried clams with some fresh lemon juice were great. The crispy rice tuna was amazing. Perfectly crisped rice and the tuna was ample and very flavorful (not too spicy). Kobe slider was very good, but not worth the price. The meat itself was the worst part of the slider. It was by no means bad, but everything else on the slider was better. Finally, the star of the show were the tacos. These were amazing. Loaded with tuna and avocado, we ended up ordering these a few more times as they were that good. Not huge, but definitely not a one biter. The second round saw us re-up on some appetizers and order some sushi including the caterpillar roll, the fatty tuna roll, and Otoro sashimi. The caterpillar roll was fantastic. Generously stuffed and exceptional in taste. The fatty tuna roll and the Otoro sashimi left much to be desired. This visit we came for their happy hour, which happens daily even on the weekends (with varying hours). As we came early evening, we were seated quickly- but the restaurant filled quickly and there was soon a lengthy wait for tables by the time we finished. We didn't order any cocktails this time, but we did get their green matcha tea which was solid. We ordered: - tuna tartare tacos - hamachi crudo - hot crab rolls - Mountain Dew roll - spicy salmon crunch roll - crispy rice crab rangoon Our favorites were the hot crab roll and the crispy rice crab rangoon - so so good. Sushi rolls were solid, hamachi crudo was a bit small, and the tuna tartare tacos were a bit heavy on spicy mayo and pickled jalapeños. That said, we have no regrets. We even got doubles of things we liked. On my last visit, I came for my birthday and the desserts are on point, especially the warm butter cake. Excellent sushi, ambience is very cool. Can't wait to go back and try other things off their menu. Drinks are great, and have great presentation. Our waitress was very on top of things, even though it was a busy Friday night. Stopping by to check on us, and refill our water. The aesthetic of the bathrooms is something to see, also couldn't get over how quiet it was in there in comparison to the actual restaurant. We will be back! CHECK YOUR BILL! Food here is pricy but always great. I ordered one roll to go the other day, it was $22 for the cha cha roll - the roll comes with spicy tuna, and since my gut can't handle spicy I asked for just regular Tuna. I handed the guy at the take out window my card and didn't pay attention (my fault) and I was charged $34.80. It's annoying they automatically charge 10% tip on all to go orders, but I would leave a tip anyways so it just seems weird they do that since the carry out people would probably make more money if they didn't do an auto tip. The issue is the $8 added to my bill for regular tuna! I had no extra fish on this roll, and was given know warning. I called back and spoke with a manager Sunday evening who, while pleasant sounding, didn't seem to care at all, and said the spicy tuna is pre made and regular tuna comes from a filet so that makes it more expensive- so I should have been told but that's just what they charge. I told her I was not informed and she still didn't seem to care and just went silent on the phone. For a place that already charges quite a bit of money for their food - I found it ridiculous that they charge anything, let alone that much for swapping out the same fish in a roll. The service here is usually good, the bartenders are hit or miss on personality but make great drinks - but this was a major turn off: from the crazy charges to the lack of care from management. With the many options in Royal Oak for food you might want to try to do better in the future if you want to retain customers, especially customers who come often - like myself. I'd rather give my money elsewhere where there are no outlandish extra charges and the staff actually is personable and cares. read more

Ronin is one of the very best choices for sushi. Located in downtown Royal Oak and street parking is available on all sides. The decor is heavy wood and leathers giving it a modern rustic look. But the ambiance is a vibe which gives a very modern feel. Although there are tables in the dining area me and my crew love hanging in the lounge on the comfy leather sofas. The food is tasty! There are specialty sushi rolls like the sea monster and the BLT roll that you can't get anywhere else. And they have happy hour and seasonal offerings. The lemon jasmine rice is excellent. Came here as a family on a June evening. Last things first -- SINCE WE HAD 5 PEOPLE, THEY SNUCK A 20% REQUIRED TIP ONTO THE BILL WITHOUT MENTIONING IT. I do not agree that it is appropriate policy to require a mandatory tip for any party over four. This is just bad business. And I wonder how many people have double-tipped as a result of the secrecy they use in slipping it onto the bill. BE FOREWARNED. Other than that, the sushi is good. Very gluten-free friendly sushi spot in downtown Royal Oak. It's usually very busy, but there is an open seating area that's first come, first serve or the bar while you wait. Even if you have to wait a while, there are shops to explore nearby, and the food will be worth it. We've eaten here multiple times and have always had excellent service. My favorite is the Cha Cha Roll with the GF modifications. The tuna tartare was not as good as some others. The Basque Cheesecake (which was gluten free!) special they had as their special in April was AMAZING and I'll be thinking about it every time I want dessert. read more

The service honestly made our experience extremely poor. Our waitress, Chloe, was rude from the start and things only went downhill. I ordered something off the happy hour menu at 6:55 (happy hour ends at 7). I double-checked the time because I wouldn't have ordered it otherwise. When the bill came, we were charged full price. The dish jumped from $8 to $20. When I brought it up, Chloe brushed it off, saying "it's the computer" but that she could ask her manager. Instead, she charged my card and came back 30 seconds later claiming it was our fault for not knowing the dish had four pieces instead of two. This is something that's not even listed on the menu. Genuinely wtf?!! At a restaurant of this caliber, that kind of slimy upsell and dismissive service is unacceptable. It felt like she assumed we wouldn't notice, and honestly I'm not convinced she even spoke to a manager. If she had been polite and simply apologized, I would have let the upcharge go. Instead, she was rude and blamed us for no reason. Between the attitude and the shady handling of the bill, we won't be back. Spend your money somewhere else. read more

I've been here so many times and the food somehow just gets better and better. The chilli cauliflower, the mtn dew sushi, the deep fried Oreo - even the flavored edamame all just HIT and hit hard! Arguably the best and largest serving size of sushi in south east michigan - will recommend again and again. Staff also super nice and friendly. A 1 hour wait turned into 25 mins as we walked around the streets of Royal oak and the cool tones give a poetry slam vibe. read more

We've been coming to Ronin for years and have always had great experiences as one of the better sushi spots in the area. Over the last year or so, though, we've experienced a noticeable decline in quality. Tonight was by far the most disappointing experience we've had with the food. We came for happy hour and ordered the crab rangoon with crispy rice. It wasn't bad. We also had the spicy salmon crunch roll. Unfortunately, there was little spice or crunch. The most disappointing, though, was one of the featured specials, the Black Cod Fish N Chips. Not only was the fish flavorless, but the fish came sitting in a pool of oil. Accompanying the fish was a delicious tartar sauce, a salty slaw, and fries that were stale. Overall, we left very disappointed in the experience. We may return for a happy hour roll here and there, but it's very evident that quality has declined significantly over the past few years. read more
