Some of the reviews for this place weren't great, but I took the risk and placed an order anyway ... I'm so glad I did! The online ordering process was super easy, and I found the prices to be a lot cheaper than a lot of the other sushi restaurants in the area. We ordered salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri, a spicy tuna roll, the Royal Oak roll, a dragon roll, and the sunset roll. Everything was great! The nigiri was fresh, and the rolls had great flavor. I especially loved the spicy tuna roll. I wasn't the one who picked up the order, but I was told the service was great. I'm super happy with the price and quality of the sushi. I'm new to sushi so my review is less about the food and more about the experience. The food overall was good. First thing... this place is old-school Royal Oak. It's not shiny and new nor sleek and sexy like many of the other restaurants that have opened in the past five years. It's incredibly outdated and can desperately use a facelift. There was only one person working when we visited, which attributed to a very, very long dinner. Thankfully we were with friends and had nothing going on the rest of the night, except a need to run to the meter to put more money in. The menu is HUGE and convoluted to the core. There's a paper on the table you write your order on, but a lot of the things on the menu aren't on the paper order sheet, but there's also no blank space to write them in. Kinda annoying. A lot of the sushi on the menu did not have descriptions, either, which was frustrating for a newbie like me. My dining companion ordered spring rolls. It seemed to take quite a while to get them, and once she bit in, it was still frozen on the inside. She checked the second one and it had the same issue. We told the waiter, and he apologized and dropped new ones in for us. The sushi took a long time as well. Between the four of us, we had seven rolls, and by this time, more people had come in, so the single server was stretched thin. By the time we were ready to cash out, it took the server a good 15-20 minutes to give us our bill after we requested it, then another 10 to give us boxes we'd requested much earlier. Overall, I'm not sure I'd come here again. The prices are about the same as most other sushi places I've visited (give or take a buck or so) but the service was stretched way too thin and the atmosphere left much to be desired. read more

The owner greeted us with a smile and served us with patience (as my friend embarrassingly wanted to make his order difficult) and they got both of our orders correct and fast and most importantly HOT. I got takeout from Toyko Sushi for the first time the other night, and I was pleasantly surprised. We usually order from noble fish, but this might be a close runner up. I ordered the sushi dinner combo with spicy tuna roll, miso soup, California roll, crazy roll, and crab rangoons. The miso soup was good, same as you would get anywhere. The crab rangoons were surprisingly delicious. I know it is hit and miss at some places, but seriously these were amazing. California roll was delicious, and my husband loved his sushi dinner combo. The only thing I wasn't in love with was the crazy roll. It sounded great online, but the taste was just off, and I cant quite point to what was off about it. I have loved Tokyo Sushi for over a year, yet I've never actually had their sushi until this last trip. We met friends here before the normal Saturday Royal Oak crowd was out so we ended up being the only patrons for about half our time there. The service is always attentive and friendly, and this time was no different. The server was kind enough to give us a bell to ring if we needed him while he went in back to prepare food and do other tasks. We never needed the bell because he was so prompt still. Edamame (8/10): Plain with salt. No garlic so not perfect, but very tasty still. Enough to share, though I believe the portion could be a bit larger for the price. Still, order size is not too small. Spring roll (7/10): Veggies packed into this deep fried roll. Two per order. When we noticed one was a bit cold inside still our server immediately made another full order for us. Very cool of him to do. Tofu Roll (8/10): Tofu was cut so thin I wasn't sure I'd like it, but that just made it even crispier! Great flavor Extra Crunch Veggie Tempura Roll (7/10): Definitely crunchy enough, lots of flavor. the pieces were huge so they kind of fell apart after the first bite (kudos if you can somehow fit that in your mouth in one bite). Avocado Roll (8/10): I've been really enjoying these simple rolls lately no matter where I go. Fresh tasting avocado with a nice touch of sesame. No worries about the seaweed on the outside of the roll (some prefer it inside the rice, I know) as there was no added fishy taste/smell. Fried Rice (9/10): This is what I normally ordered but I got it to-go this time. Would've been a 10/10 but it wasn't the pineapple fried rice I ordered (I didn't check until I was at home so not an issue they could fix this time). Still, tofu was very crispy. Rice and veggies had excellent flavor. it was also not as spicy as I asked for, but since it was so good I'm not deducting anything. Finally, I loved our server. From the earlier fixing our spring rolls to being attentive, he was also funny! Another party of four sat near us and asked "What's the difference between the 'sunrise' and 'sunset'". He immediately answered "one rises, one sets" and I burst out laughing. Go here, try the extensive menu, relax, and have a nice "old" feel that you can almost never get in Royal Oak. read more

Ordered take out from Tokyo Sushi after restaurants re-opened. They weren't open for dine-in, and set up their restaurant to box off the entrance with plastic where customers can stand and pay and get their food. I think they are being really smart since the virus is still spreading, even though neighboring restaurants are open for dine in! The food was pretty good! I'm a big sushi person and really enjoyed the Royal Oak roll. I always order gyoza with my sushi and I wish Tokyo Sushi's gyoza were a little warmer/softer when I got them, but other than that they were tasty! The wait was slightly longer than anticipated. The Pad Thai had a definite peanut sauce to it (sometimes I feel like the peanut is just an afterthought) and it was delicious! The mild had a definite kick to it. We also had lettuce wraps (delicious), tempura shrimp (light and flakey, also delicious), and the Detroit Roll. Everything was cooked exactly as it should, with great flavor! Ehhh. I have been here a few times, mostly ordering the sushi. I am disappointed each time with some aspect, whether it be the slower and inattentive service, lack of cleanliness, or quality of food. The reason I give 3 stars instead of 1 is because usually of these categories, 2/3 are satisfactory while the other is highly lacking and it is usually the food that is on par. Twice I have come and waited 5 minutes to be seated, and once was seated at a table that was dirty, sticky and didn't get cleaned until I waited a good 10 minutes for the server to come and wipe down the table. The sushi is usually satisfactory, nothing to write home about, although pricier than other places in comparison. In addition, I once got the sushi combo dinner (nirgiri with tuna roll) and the pieces of fish were sliced so thin that I could see through it. It is also just very, very dark inside, with dark paneled walls, dark flooring, dark seating and not a lot of natural light. All in all, there are better places nearby like Ronin or Tokyo Sushi and Grill, or other spots in nearby burbs that are worth the drive. read more

The Pad See Ew with chicken was well prepared (chicken was perfectly done) but the flavor was a tiny bit different from what i'm used to. That being said, we were the only people there on a weekday for lunch and I have no idea how they aren't busier. They had some really great specials and were willing to work around dietary constrictions to substitute things on the specials list - which is pretty uncommon! Please go visit, send them business, keep them open! i don't want to have to find a new place when the sushi here is sooo good. read more

Tokyo isn't the worst place I've been for sushi, but it's not the kind of place that will blow you away or excite you. The place is not large, but it's spacious enough, with a good handful of booths and tables. There's plenty of room, in fact - we arrived early dinner time on a weekend (5-6ish) and were the only diners there. Even after the "dinner rush" filled in over the next two hours (we didn't expect to be there that long), the restaurant was less than half full. The lone employee in the joint was nice enough, and orders for the four of us came up correctly with the exception of spring rolls that were served icy in the middle. He was allergic and dropped another order though. The sushi itself was fair to good, and I enjoyed the roe which appeared on many rolls. Nothing really wowed me though, and seemed a touch overpriced for the low rent atmosphere (think of your typical outdated American-Chinese restaurant). I probably wouldn't rush back, and would try out some other places in the area before giving them another visit. But for what it is, it was adequate. read more

I was really looking forward to trying this place with the great views. After my experience at Tokyo Sushi, I had to put in my two cents. Bottom Line: Don't Bother They have a good selection on the menu, but the sushi and sashimi prices were outrageous! $20 for 10 pieces in the small sashimi combo. This place was WAY OVER PRICED for a stipmall sushi joint with three tables. It looked more like a take out place than dine in. I asked a friend to meet me there for lunch. We stayed to make the best of it and tried not to spend $40 each for lunch in a stripmall. I resigned to order Sashimi appetizer @ $8 for 6 pieces, I was expecting to at least get a good taste of sashimi before the Thai food. Two of the 6 pieces was the sweet egg custard stuff. That is so annoying, but more so was that we got our meals before the appetizers. Then the waitress came back to say the cook forgot my friend's soup appetizer. The Thai food was far from outstanding and barely edible. My friend had to pick the chicken out of the mush of vegetables just to eat something. Their version of Thai basil brown sauce was a watery brown puddle with floating oil. The soup, that arrived late, was simply gross. Oil floating on a clear brown broth. I guess this place doesn't use coconut milk in their Thai food and doesn't understand how to use basil. I was prepared for the slow service, and the waitress was very nice, but we told her we would like our food medium and asked if medium was hot enough to make your nose run. I know now that "Oh yes" is a standard response to any question. Medium spice was the equivilant heat to a bratwurst. The two bites of salmon and tuna from the appetizer was pretty good. Still wound up spending $20. Guess I should have ordered the small sashimi combo and had a sandwich when I got home. Would probably have been much less disappointed. read more

Decided to do carryout during the week on a slow night. I tried Tokyo Sushi because they ran a livingsocial deal and sold sushi made with cooked chicken. My order consisted of Chicken Teriyaki Rolls, an Asparagus Roll, Tom Yum Soup, and Spring Rolls. It's kind of weird that they do both Japanese food and Thai food. I'm accustomed to a specialty restaurant having one genre of food. Needless to say, I was disappointed in the sushi rolls. Sushi: The Chicken Teriyaki Rolls were "eh" with the dry chicken that was portioned out. There was more cucumber or avocado (don't remember which) in the roll than chicken. The sticky rice was really sticky, but the roll nowhere near that of Sakana's Chicken Tempura Rolls. The asparagus rolls were large, but that was because of all the extra rice that was stuffed inside. That was a turn off- the seaweed wraps couldn't even be closed. Thai food: The tom yum soup and spring rolls were great. I was pleasantly surprised at the fresh veggies in the soup. The spring rolls were fried to perfection. Atmosphere: It was DEAD and 30 minutes to closing. The woman at the counter was rushing me to do my order and it was apparent she was ready to go home when she sent me out with items missing from my order. Parking is sparse and metered. If you go on a Thursday or weekend the meters are "Valet" for the bar next door. I wouldn't come here again, not the best sushi spot in the area although competitively priced. read more

I like Tokyo Sushi. It's a chain of sushi places around the suburbs that has sushi, japanese food and Thai. I normally only get sushi. I went last night with a friend of mine. She's Japanese, but decided to try the thai dishes. She asked for it to be "thai spicy" as she's been to Thailand and likes it that way. The dish came out with almost no spice (I tried it.) I had sushi and it was just as good as any place in the area. I especially like the pumpkin tempura roll. I don't know how authentic it is, but it sure is delicious. This is a decent place if you want sushi. The atmosphere is bright and clean. The restaurant is large and there is never a wait. The food is pretty good and there is a variety. Not the best sushi place around but Certainly better than Little Tree. Tampura lacks any salt or seasoning. Sushi is good. They were able to make the sashimi tempura for my wife who is pregnant, although they charged extra without mentioning it even though they suggested the tempura option. I discovered this spot during the height of the pandemic when I was using DoorDash way too frequently. And I am so thankful that I did!! The sweet tofu and avocado roll is my favorite sushi roll that I've ever had. Vegetable tempura is killer as well! Great portion sizes and extremely affordable. My food is always prepared even quicker than promised, and the folx who operate the place are extremely kind. I can't say enough good things about Tokyo Sushi. Don't expect this to be the best sushi you've ever had or for that matter even good sushi/sashimi. For $14, they have lunch boat that includes tempura, sashimi, california rolls and more. The ginger dressing on the salad is a bit too watered down. On a side not, there are literally like 5 menus: a thai menu, a sushi menu, chinese and more. The first time, my husband didn't get his order of gyoza. Today, I didn't get my entree of tempura and my sushi dish was incorrect. Also today, my husband's meal was not fully cooked and had little flavor (same dish he's ordered every time).
