What a disappointing evening. We always dine at Basil and Mint when we are Kelowna. We had always had good food and good service for a reasonable price. On a recent trip to Kelowna we met with an old friend of ours who lives in Kelowna and we suggested dinner at Basil and Mint. After dinner our friend said that next time we should go to the Yacht Club with him for dinner. Our server Scott has been our server on previous occasions but this evening the service was not up to the usual standards. It was a busy evening but it took a long time for our entrees to arrive. We shared an order of escargot again but on the occasion the escargot were very small. Our entrees when they finally arrived consisted of a salmon special for our friend, chicken parmesan for my husband and beef short rib for myself. My husband found the chicken lacking in seasoning and flavour. My short rib was dry and stringy. It was terrible and definitely not worth the $42.00. When the server came with the pepper grinder and asked we wanted pepper we all responded yes. She did the pepper for my husband and myself and then walked away. We had to flag down another server to ask for pepper for our friend. When our friend left the table and Scott came by and asked how our dinners were we expressed our disappointment he just asked if we had been served the same meals on other occasions. Should this make a difference? You should be able to have consistently good food and it should not be dependent on what you order. We ordered crème brulee for dessert. It was so disappointing because we had suggested Basil and Mint to our friend. He did not comment on his meal but the fact that he suggested another restaurant for our next dinner speaks volumes. We might give Basil and Mint another try because we have had very good experiences before but they are no longer a must visit when we are in Kelowna. read more

Great atmosphere, it was a quite Tuesday night. It was my first night visiting Kelowna and this place was such a great experience. Considering I had salmon the night before at another restaurant that didn't deliver, this place definitely made up for it. I had the panko salmon, my friend had the short ribs with roasted vegetables. Everything was so tasty, if I was more hungry, I'd have seconds. We finished with Tiramisu and Chocolate Mousse. Both were delicious. If I come back to visit I'll be sure to stop by for a fancy night out here. Great service from our server (I think his name was Scott), he also was the bartender if that helps. I came to Kelowna for vacation and saw Basil & Mint as one of the top restaurants...but their food says otherwise. We ordered a variety of food including 3 set courses and 1 Spaghetti Puttanesca. 1) The Food Out of everything I had, I would say my favourite dish was the Okanagan Valley Beet Salad. It tasted fresh and the beets were thoroughly cooked. The feta cheese made it a bit more "filling." We also got the other appetizers but they were very average. For entrees, we ordered 2 Mediterranean Cioppino's and 1 Boneless Short Ribs and Onions. During my West Coast trip, my family and I intended to eat all the fresh seafood we could, which is why we got 2 of the Cioppino's. However, I was disappointed with how the seafood did not taste fresh at all. While some people may dislike the "fishy" taste of super fresh seafood, the seafood in this dish did not have that rather, it had an "old" taste to it. It became a bit hard to chew because the shrimps tasted soggy. The Short Ribs were better probably because short ribs taste better after sitting for long periods of time. For dessert, we ordered the tiramisu and the cheesecake of the day, which was a raspberry-rhubarb cheesecake. I was a fan of both, especially the cheesecake because I liked how the flavours were throughout the cake itself instead of just in the sauce. 2) Service Not the best but not the worst. Given that we were sitting on the patio, I felt like our server tried her best to accommodate us. Dessert did take a while to arrive, considering how it was probably the item that required the least effort. I'm pretty sure they were already pre-cut and plated too. Guess we had to wait an extra 15 minutes for the kitchen to put whipped cream and raspberries on them... 3) Ambiance Definitely a good date spot (we saw a couple the night we went). Although you get a view of the street, the area itself is quite peaceful and a short walk to a nearby beach. Family-friendly too... (I think)! read more

Came here during May long weekend. My friends and I (group of 6) were staying close by and Basil & Mint had pretty good reviews according to Yelp so we decided to check it out. The wait was about an hour, but we really wanted to try it out based on the reviews, so we decided to wait. When we were seated, the server told us that the kitchen was backed up and that we would have to wait 45mins/1 hour for food. Since we had already waited an hour, we decided not to fuss, so we waited. The food took more than an hour to arrive, and everything was average at best. Here are the items we ordered: 1. Escargot - did not really have any taste to it, you can get a tastier version at The KEG for the same price 2. Spaghetti & Meatballs - meatballs were so tough!! 2 of my friends ordered this meal, and both said it was unsatisfying 3. Ambrosia Apple, carmalized pecan, cranberry & goat cheese salad - this one was decent, my friend enjoyed it 4. Spaghetti Puttanesca - also decent 5. Fire Roasted Tomato Sauce, Salt Spring Island Mussels, Clams with Garlic Bread - I ordered this meal, it was average. I barely remember eating this 6. Boneless Short Ribs & Onions - the short ribs tasted okay but it was kind of cold as if it had been sitting out for awhile When the server brought our food, we were missing 1 entree. It took another 20 minutes for them to bring out another plate of Spaghetti & Meatballs on top of the 1 hour+ we already spent waiting!! No one even checked on our table during that 20 minutes, they were actually avoiding our table because they knew they had messed up!! 20 minutes later the server comes with the plate of Spaghetti & Meatballs, and asks if the rest of us wants fresh ground pepper with our meals. Are you joking?! After 20 minutes?!! Bad bad service. The server comped the Spaghetti & Meatballs and gave us all a 10% discount which was nice, but overall it was an unsatisfying experience. Aside from the subpar food and the long wait time, I'm giving this restaurant a 1 star rating. The worse part is that while we were told that the kitchen was backed up and that our food would take more than an hour, we saw the chef wandering around chatting with customers.... I'll keep this brief and to the point. Hostess was very nice. Made a reservation over the phone and they were super friendly. The food was actually not all bad. I ordered the Spaghetti Puttanesca and found it flavourful and very well cooked. Wifey had a pizza and she very much enjoyed it. We had two servers - one was amazing - we shared a Caesar Salad and she made a joke about us eating it Lady and the Tramp Style, which I still chuckle about. The other server, a dude, wow...if the chef hears what this guy says about his cooking he's going to get slapped in the face right before he has to go find a new job. Not a bad server per se, but when I asked him what his favorite thing on the menu was, he started listing off things he wouldn't order. First on his list, the risotto, which was what I was going to order. So that was out. Then he started moving down a rather extensive list of things he wouldn't get and why, to the point that I was starting to wonder if we should even stick around! Oh well, I hope things work out for that dude, but seriously not bad food, pretty cool looking place and the staff were nice. read more

I came for dinner while visiting family as part of Dine Out Kelowna, and the staff were exceptional in accommodating our group and especially wonderful to our smallest family member (6 month old infant). We had wonderful service that started from the first moment of arrival. We were seated in a private room to allow us space to move around and not be worried about noise impacting other guests. This was followed by very prompt service starting with cocktails and all the way through to dessert. While most of the group selected from the 3 course menu that was part of the Dine Out event, accommodations were made for allergies. In addition, the manager came to check on both the location and service and offered to bring our little one something to enjoy with the rest of us. The staff went above and beyond by providing complementary gnocchi cooked only with a bit of olive oil, which was a very memorable experience for us all! I think I have found a go to restaurant. Wonderful attosphere of the restaurant set the mood for our group of seven. The food was wonderful and the experience was superb. Our waiter, Taylor, was great. He is extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the wines. A very good and personable waiter is there when he should be and Taylor is one of those. If I was basing this review on the food alone it would be a five star review. The food we had at dinner tonight was exceptional! The reason for the three stars was the service and the wait time. Upon arrival the hostess was missing. Someone else was "covering" for her but didn't seat us because she wasn't sure where to put us. After ten or so minutes of waiting for the hostess to come back she eventually decided to seat us herself. Once seated we waited a further ten or so minutes before our server showed up to take our drink orders. The server then disappeared and we sat waiting to place our orders for a long time (at least 15-20 minutes). The restaurant wasn't busy so I'm not sure why it took so long. The food took a while to come out after we ordered but was well worth the wait! It was fresh and delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The short ribs and mashed potatoes were the highlight. The creme brûlée was also a stand out! I would say if you aren't in a hurry and are happy to wait for the slow service then definitely check this place out! If you are super hungry or in a rush perhaps try somewhere else. read more

I live in Kelowna and this is one of my favourite restaurants. Always a consistently good experience. We have loved their tequila prawns, lamb, roast chicken, pizzas are unreal and pastas are delicious. I have not been disappointed yet. For starters we had the duck liver pate and escargot. The pate was very good, and the escargot were good, but not mind blowing. The service was friendly but not in your face. Extremely unimpressed with the management of this restaurant. My friends and I were in town for my bachelorette party (party of 5) - we were having our last dinner in town and wanted to go somewhere nicer. As we walked in, we were very impressed with the decor. The place had so much potential! Our waitress was nice and took our orders soon after we sat down, as we all quickly decided on the 3 courses for $35 (soup or salad, main course, and dessert). Over half an hour passed and we were getting antsy. Where are our salads?? The waitress assured us it was coming shortly. FORTY-FIVE minutes later, our uncooked salad dishes arrived. Starving, we all scarfed down our salads/soup (beet salad, caesar salad, and asparagus soup). We were feeling a bit more forgiving as the salads and soup were delicious (caesar a bit heavily dressed for my liking though). Another significant lull in time passed. Now we were getting really annoyed and starving. Mind you, we had a 8:30pm reservation so there was no apparent dinner rush in the dining room. We even brought some question-based bachelorette games to play as we waited - I don't even want to think about how pissed off we would have been without any sort of entertainment. The table next to us called the manager over and did some serious complaining - we weren't the only ones experiencing such slow service. I looked around, and the faces of other patrons did not look impressed. TWO HOURS. It took TWO hours for a 3 course dinner, one of which was a salad/soup. Completely unacceptable, unless the food was the most amazing thing I had ever eaten...but it wasn't. I ordered the cioppino, which I think was probably the best option after hearing about the dishes my friends had. The cioppino was not terrible, but it probably ranks the lowest out of all the cioppinos I've eaten. From my friends: I was told the risotto lacked in seasoning, to the point where neither friend who ordered it bothered finishing the course. The boneless short ribs were tougher than you'd expect for a piece of meat that has been slowly braised. Finally, the roast chicken itself was decent and not dry, but the gravy was far too salty. By the time we got our mains, it was near the 2 hour mark. We expressed our discontent with the wait... and as we were almost done, the waitress informed us she would have the kitchen fire our desserts ASAP so we wouldn't have to wait much longer. I appreciate that she thought about it at all, but what?? If it were me, I would have fired that as soon as the mains were delivered, especially since all 6 of us ordered the creme brulee, which is a dish that can afford to sit for a moment after completion. Plus, having made it at home, I know the custard would have been pre-made, so it was a complete fail that the dessert took as long as it did. It's a dark day when creme brulee can't make your dinner better. The sugar layer was too thick, to the point where it was gritty underneath because some of the sugar did not get bruleed. The custard was delicious, but I ended up tossing most of the sugary top to the side, as it was granular and unproportional. We asked our waitress why it took so long, and she said there was a private party of 17 that ordered ahead of us. Weak. It wasn't the waitress's fault at all, I completely blame management. This is a restaurant that advertises to host private parties. If that's your plan for business, please staff your restaurant accordingly so it can sustain the private parties you want to host plus your regular dinner service. Otherwise, close the regular section down. Hosting a private party is not an acceptable reason to make your other paying customers wait nearly an hour for a salad starter. We were also not offered an apology or any sort of compensation. Hopefully going forward this restaurant will learn from this... otherwise, don't bother eating here if they are hosting any parties. read more

This just opened up in the old cabana location on lakeshore... So nice to have something back there. Our highlights were the cocktail menu and the braised beef was fabulous. Wine & beer menu is small, but with okay variety. They have cocktail specials that were great. Kids menu is $11 with burgers, grilled cheese, but the highlight was spaghetti. We were in on their second night of operations and so there were a few service hiccups. Decor hasn't changed much since cabana, interior walls are now orange which seems a little off brand for a place called basil and mint, but generally, it was off to a good start. Brandi and I were headed out for dinner and were just passing by the old Cabana location which is now Basil and Mint. Thought we'd give it a try and honestly we were super impressed. The service was fantastic, we shared mussels to start and they were sizable, with a very nice broth and bread! I had the feature lamb while Brandi had the feature tuna With mushroom risotto. Both were so close to great however the risotto was slightly underdone from Brandi's perspective and my reduction was just a bit strong. Both meals were 4.5 out of 5 though so don't let our pickiness put you off. We shared the brule, had a coffee and were done. On a side note the restaurant has a nice selection of local wines from some of the strongest producers in the region. Nice touch! Try it soon. We will return next time in town. If you are looking for something quite inside, no loud music which is a nuisance during dinner, or something more upbeat on the patio, this works. We are locals and finally came and it was fabulous. Escargot and carpaccio, prawns and spaghetti vongole. All great. Only criticism would be the bread. Buttered with garlic and stuff (?) for escargot. It need to plain so you can soak up with oil/sauce. Same for spaghetti, either proper garlic toast or plain baguette would be best. We will be back für sure! read more

Wonderful meal! We started with the caesar salad (sans croutons as we are gluten free). Delicious flavour and perfect fresh lettuce along with real anchovies in the sauce and crisp smoky bacon. I had the lamb and both the meat and the reduction sauce were absolutely divine! My hubby had the pork chop and he thinks that it (along with the cherry reduction sauce) was some of the best he's ever had! Both meals came with a lovely assortment of root vegetables and green beans and we both chose the mashed potatoes which are flavoured with horseradish.... yummy! For dessert, we shared a chocolate chipotle pate with raspberry coulis and fresh raspberries and cream... a decadent gluten free delight! We enjoyed the relaxed yet professional ambiance - it's a beautifully decorated and perfectly lit space. Our server was attentive and polite without being overbearing and we enjoyed meeting Peter, the owner/chef who is clearly very passionate about creating an amazing dining experience for his customers. A bunch of us girls went here during a friends bachelorette party weekend in Kelowna. I reviewed the menu online, and considering the prices I expected quite a bit from this place. It was nothing special by way of atmosphere, kind of like one big room with basic decor. I had the Ciopinno which was okay, but had little taste to it. For the price of my meal, I was not impressed. One of the girls at the table had an issue with her pizza missing a chunk out of it, so she asked for it to be remade. The kitchen, being an exposed, open kitchen, made no effort to be tactful about the situation, and one chef was very rude to her coworkers. This was disappointing, especially since we could see and hear everything! The waitress was had was very nice, and service was great. It was a blah experience, not worth the cost. read more

My husband and I are on our last night of a anniversary road trip. What a great dinner to end a fabulous trip. I had the quinoa salad with kale and we shared the wild mushroom pizza. The salad was as delicious as the presentation. The pizza was truly amazing. Thin crispy crust with the perfect blend of cheese, mushrooms and bacon topped with truffle oil. We stopped by here on a fluke seeing it while we drove by on a Tuesday night, it was fairly slow and it was a bit late, the staff was super friendly from start to finish. Our waiter/bartender (Brandon) was absolutely amazing. It was like having a private butler with an amazing amount of charm and knowledge, he provided custom drinks based on our likes like a pro. Its just to bad that he wasnt gay or I would have taken him home. The food was quick and super tasty down to the last bite. We went back on a Friday night. We didnt expect the same service since it was busy and not some random Tuesday but neither the staff nor the kitchen disappoint. The managers Taylor and Chris did an amazing job checking in on us without it feeling like it was to much. They made us feel like family the first night but on this Friday night (2 weeks later) they recognized us all and truly treated us like family. The server we had that day (Dustin) was great, very attentive and friendly. (Brandon) came over at some point and chatted with us on a first name base (I feel bad that i have to admit that i did not remember his name, he however remembered us all) The food again was on point and the pork was just stunning. Our third visit was on the following Saturday, food again on point I dont think I have to keep repeating that. Service was amazing with everyone attending to us like family. Our server Zach was great as well. Every night they stayed far to long because of us, no one ever told us the closing time or made us feel like we need to leave. Knowing now that we made some stay over an extra hour makes us feel a bit bad but the experience was amazing. This place doenst just have amazing food, drinks and service, but it also provides and experience that i will meassure all other restaurants against from this day on. When visiting Kelowna from Vancouver we stumbled upon Basil & Mint. We went for an early dinner around five, and it was pretty quite. Service was off to a great start, seated a nice table, had our drink orders placed, food orders taken, and all was good. Our food arrived to only realize that our appetizer was misplaced/forgotten. Though the service from our waiter made up for the hiccup! We ordered a beef tenderloin and the rack of lamb special. Both were amazing. Each cooked to a perfect medium rare, the flavour was great and the meat was perfectly tender. The mashed potatoes and roasted veggies were also a hit. Our waiter offered us an on the house dessert for the appetizer hiccup, and we ordered a Individual Yam pie. Talk about yummy! Overall, we strongly recommend this beautiful restaurant for a yummy meal when in Kelowna, we did drive our from our hotel in Penticton, and we're glad we did! read more

We had a Sunday evening dinner at Basil & Mint. It was a nice warm evening and we opted for the outdoor seating. Our server, Terry, was courteous and attentive. Our cocktails were served promptly. My wife had the Seafood Risotto and I had the Braised Lamb Shank. Her seafood risotto was very good. My lamb shank wasn't as hot as I would have preferred, but it was tender and tasty. This has been a pleasant experience. As soon as I walked through these magical minty doors I felt welcome and at home. It's hard to have some time with my husband without the little ones running around; this is the first time we have gone out without the kids in so long and it was a spectacular time. Visiting friends on a Saturday night in Kelowna, clearly needed a Sunday brunch. We had previously seen the amazing patio here while driving and it was a beautiful morning, so we put two and two together. The other couple we brunched with had been here before at dinner and said that the food was exquisite, they were not wrong, it translated into one of the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had! All four of us started off with the Sunday Caesar, because its Sunday, clearly. Truthfully, not the best one I've ever had but they certainly made it 'extra spicy' as I had asked for. One problem was that they were out their garnishes from the night before, so no olives but we did get a pickled bean or two. The drink was also a little thin (lacked viscosity) which i blame on too much ice and the shape of the glass it was served in. The taste of the drink was quality though and luckily we could joke about these things with our waitress, who was amazing. So the staff that were working on Sunday, June 5th, 2016 were on point, like leading the pack in being awesome. The hostess was smiling, warm and pleasant; she happened to be on the phone when we arrived and was able to acknowledge us, apologize for being on the phone and welcome us all while actually being on the phone! Bravo for multi-tasking! Even the other server (who had a distinct Dothraki look from Game of Thrones) managed to make accidentally spilling water on another table and breaking a plate look suave and cool. The waitress for our table was amazing (I wish I had gotten her name) and she carried all the qualities I look for when semi-hungover eating: charm, smiles, jokes with the table, answers questions about the menu with honesty and wit and was not afraid to double check with the chef. We actually had funny conversations about the show Portlandia, hipster coffee in Oregon and Kelowna's many beaches. Thank you for helping to make our meal excellent, your recommendation for the Mergeuz Sausage was perfect with our mains. Oh right the food! Three of us had Eggs Benedict and one person had the baked eggs. There were no complaints, we all practically licked our plates clean. I had the Pacific Smoked Salmon on perfect eggs, sitting a top their home baked bread (no english muffins here!). The hollandaise was one of the best I have ever eaten and that alone is a huge compliment. It was flavoured with both lime and chipotle, so that you could taste the subtle hints of each but not be overpowered by either. The accompanying pan fried potatoes were served with caramelized onion and diced apple were tasty. To finish the plate were two spears of asparagus and a fire roasted whole Campari (i think!) tomato. I will reiterate, one of the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had and I ate a lot of them because I'm a lush and Sunday brunch is my reward for tearing it up on a Saturday night. 100% recommend this restaurant! Food was a solid four, service four and a half, not taking Amex ruined the meal. Let me know when you take Amex. Trying to remember the last fine dining establishment to not accept it...six week wait to be reimbursement. read more
