We ordered 2 dishes through Foodora the other night. The restaurant called us after the courier already arrived to say they ran out of chicken so we ended up subbing chicken with shrimp. They also added garlic bread for us but it didn't really taste like garlic. I'm not sure what herb it tasted like...kind of like those Italian seasoning mixes? Our pasta was sitting on pools of oil and it looked kind of gross. Taste was ok and portion is decent. Photo is of the pesto sauce...which didn't look how we expected at all. Next time we want mediocre pasta, we will just make pasta at home with store-bought sauce. read more

Short on money, but craving pasta? Basil Pasta Bar's got you covered. Basil is a uniquely decorated, small restaurant serving up pretty much any and all kinds of pastas in a casual and welcoming environment. They really do have everything here: linguine, fettuccine, gnocchi, lasagna, you name it! And the best part is that it's all really good! Even though it's not really what I would call a bar, the procedure here is very simple: walk in straight to the cashier, order your food, grab your own cutlery and water, then take a seat somewhere (unless you're getting take-out) until someone brings you your food. That's it, just wait and let the magic happen! I went here for the first time at the recommendation of a friend a few days ago, dining with two other friends, and I must say that I was happy with my experience. The waitress and the cooks were friendly and polite and service was prompt and efficient - the food came out of the kitchen in about 10 - 15 minutes for all three of us. The restaurant itself was busy, but quite clean and presentable for an establishment on a busy street in downtown Vancouver. If you're looking for some decent pasta, be aware that you may be looking at a wait time if you're coming in with a party since tables are limited. Also, be aware that there is only one washroom on site for a restaurant that seats about 30 people. The main reason why I'm giving Basil a four-star is because of the food. While the food overall was not perfect, it got pretty darn close. If I could, I'd give it a 4.5/5. In total, we ordered: Spaghetti carbonara - $9.95 Build your own pasta (ravioli) - $9.95 Chicken curry fettuccine - $9.95 Spaghetti and meatballs - $11.40 Tiramisu cake - $5.95 As you can see, the prices here are VERY nice, considering the both the amount and quality of food that you get in one plate. I'm a 5'9", 200lbs, kinda athletic, so I had two of the above dishes were mine and I think that if I wanted to go with one dish I definitely would have had just under the amount of food that would have left me satisfied. Two plates was spot on for quantity for me, but maybe I was just hungry that day haha. I had the chicken curry fettuccine and the spaghetti with meatballs and I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the curry fettuccine. The sauce had all the right spices and textures and consistency, but the flavour, to put it bluntly, was very bland. I expected to be hit with much more flavour. My two other friends tried it and felt the same way, so it's not just me that felt that way about it. On the other hand, however, the spaghetti with meatballs was an absolute godsend after that curry dish. It packed quite the punch! It was filling, and the rosé sauce really added a nice element to a classic dish. I also added extra meatballs for $1.50 which was absolutely worth. The other dishes are the ones my friends had and they were both excellent, especially the ravioli. The tiramisu cake I would say felt like a $4.50 cake as opposed to a $5.95. It simply didn't taste like a $5.95 piece, but it was a pretty nice way to end the night. Exactly what you would expect of a standard tiramisu, so no surprises there. We have had lunch and early dinners here several times a year going back 4 years as it is right across from Scotiabank Dance Centre on Davie Street. Amazing sized portions for around $10! Always have enough for another meal. Pasta is flavorful, saucy and quite generous on the protein. My favourite is the curry chicken pasta or the smoked salmon one. Small place but usually can find a seat for 2 no prob as most of their orders are takeout or delivery, which is quite brisk in volume, nice to see. Would give the quality of the pasta 3.5 stars and the portion size 4.5. Not much ambience inside so give it a solid 4 stars for feeding the hungry family with extra to spare and for less that $10 a serving. read more

Basil Pasta Bar (on Davie) has a dingy, dilapidated feel to the small place. Window seat is still the best because people don't bother looking in, and hey, it's Yaletown -- chances of a really cute/hot girl walking by once every 2 minutes or so are pretty good. Portion sizes are good so their ad copy is no lie. For under $10 (usually $8.95) you can have a filling lunch of pasta. However, taste is mediocre, probably because the sauce tasted thin. Lots of pasta, yes, but you miss the richness that comes from good sauce. After all, pasta really just moves the sauce from the plate to your mouth. I got the "spicy" Penne Arrabiata (spicy tomato sauce with chorizo sausage, red peppers, and garlic; garnished with fresh parsley and goat cheese) and my friend tried the Spaghetti Carbonara. Penne Arrabiata was barely spicy but there is a mild buzz in your mouth. Otherwise tasted okay - which is to say on par (maybe even inferior to) getting your own pasta sauce from the supermarket and pouring it into pasta you boiled at home. You'd probably be too lazy to get your own chorizo and goat cheese, though so Basil Pasta Bar would still be one step ahead of you. read more

This place has cheap pasta and the best part is they deliver! I love that places in downtown Vancouver deliver food. Of course don't expect authentic Italian pasta but the portions are good and I liked the food. The prices are reasonable and you can create your own pasta. Being the picky person I am, I love places with create your own pasta. I haven't actually been to their location. It was almost 9pm at night and I needed carbs before SeaWheeze 2015 (I know I know I was so last minute). I found this place on yelp and saw that they deliver! Their menu was online and they had a good selection of items on the menu. The best part was items start around $7.95 and most items were under $10! You choose your pasta, sauce, port twin, veggies and extras. I chose fusilli with marinara and meat sauce. I added some veggies too. It was pretty filling and the ratios of meat and veggies and pasta was good. Next time I'll have to go this place and try it in person. I read some of the reviews and it sounds like it's a small place and most people didn't like the actual place but they did like the food...so maybe I'll just have it delivered again. read more

Mmmmmm.... Pasta....... Ok now that I said the obvious, here is the "meat" of the details :) So consider this: My wife and I finished running an errand at Sinclair Center and it's mid-afternoon.... She is a little hungry and suddenly I am seriously craving spaghetti (and I wanted it bad)...... Well only thing for it is to open up my Yelp App on my phone and search Italian nearby to see my options.... Well definitely there are lots of choices so I look through the list comparing the avg stars as well as affordability ratings. Basil Pasta Bar catches my eye and it seems to fit what I want. Onto the bus and off we go - really it's just off Granville and Davie so it's easy to get to ! When we arrive it's practically empty - looking back at the reviews we must have inadvertently timed our visit exactly between the lunch and dinner rush so Yay Us !!! Staff greeted us and the menus are chalk full of choices !! When the lady at the till points out that we can choose as many elements in the custom build your own pasta we want I KNOW that this is going to be AWESOME !! The trick with the custom pasta selections is to build through categories: (1) Choose your Noodle : We choose Spaghetti (of course) (2) Choose your Sauce : We choose Cabonara (type of white sauce) (3) Choose your Meat : We choose Chicken AND Bacon (4) Choose your Veggies: We choose Red Pepper, Garlic AND Mushroom (5) Choose your Herbs : We choose Basil (seems appropriate) Now consider you can choose as many things from Categories 2 - 5 as you like, and you can double meat or 3 Meatballs for a very modest extra amount.... I ordered the fettuccine and shrimp with curry sauce, and all I tasted was a mouthful of bitter curry powder! I watched the cook make my food and he literally tossed some cream sauce with a shitload of curry powder for about 2 seconds and then into the container! I was praying to god it wasn't mine because I knew it wasn't going to be good, and I was right. Not only was the curry too overpowering, it lacked salt! I had to add some myself and it still didn't taste any better. I made it a little more edible by diluting it with some water but, I'm sure you all know how that went. I had a long day at work so I was super hungry, and nonetheless, I ate most of it. They were pretty busy and reviewers seem to like it. If I ever go back again I'd steer clear of the curry sauce. I asked them for some parm and was given a generous serving no questions asked :) -1 star because the spinach was still fresh and firm and didn't seem like it was cooked or wilted the way I would have preferred. Good value: $8 for a large bowl of pasta. Virtually impossible to find anything similar (in quality and quantity) in Hawaii - where we live. Excellent variety. Build your own pasta: choose your pasta, sauce, protein, veggies and toppings. Lots of options and endless combinations to customize your meal. Fast service. A bit lacking in the ambiance department. Seems more like a take-out place. A few tables to sit at, but no table service. Strictly self serve: order at the counter, get your own utensils, get your own water, etc. The staff was super !!! I have been coming to Basil Pasta Bar for many years, with a variety of people and have never once left disappointed. They are known for their "create your own" pasta dishes, where you can create your own dish (with unlimited toppings from a variety of meats, vegetables, cheeses, and herbs) for one set price. For under $10, you will leave stuffed. I have a hearty appetite and half the time can't even finish a dish by myself. They are generous both with their toppings and their portions, and the herbs they garnish the dish with are fresh. Every order is made to order, there is ample seating, and the location is convenient to both Downtown and Yaletown. My usual order: Fettuccine with pesto cream sauce, topped with bacon, chicken, chorizo, smoked salmon, spinach, mushrooms, garlic, broccoli, mozzarella, parmesan, basil & oregano I personally recommend the pesto cream sauce! I heard about this place from the person sitting next to me on the airplane and thought I'd check it out. So yesterday and my friend and I did! She had the spaghetti carbonara and I had Mediterranean pesto with the gluten free penne pasta. The nice thing about this place is there are about a dozen "pre made" dishes or you can "build your own". The prices are one of the cheapest here in Vancouver starting at $7.95. When you think pasta, you usually think of a highly commercialized big name restaurants like Italian kitchen, Antons, and/or spaghetti factory. The thing is, I think in Vancouver, its the small joints that have the best pasta and Basil definitely deserves to be at the top with the PASTA ELITE of Vancouver. They offer a very nice service the likes i have never seen. Anything from their menu for 7.95! I have never heard about this place, but when introduced by my brother, i thought i have found my new saviour for cheap and good pasta. though the location is out of the way and parking might take you sometime to find, it is well worth the effort to travel into downtown for. I had the luxury to create my own pasta that night and was snarking like a devil at my choices and told i was not limited to any one choice per category! I had chosen fettuccine w/ chorizo, bacon, chicken, tomatos, spinach, and all the herbs, on a marinara sauce. All made to order and it was spectacular. the pasta was cooked perfectly, al dante~~~ and the ingredients were all fresh and hot off the pan. The establishment has few spots so good idea might be ordering to go if seating is tight or in a hurry. They are also licensed to serve liquor if you wanted to have a bottle of beer or a glass of wine to go with your meal. Came here Sunday for dinner. I was super excited for some delicious pasta! I got the "create your own". I chose linguini noodles, with rose sauce, mushrooms, garlic, spinach, basil, meatballs, chorizo sausage and parmesan! It was super good The best part about is you can add whatever you want to your pasta and the price doesn't change (not including meats). Pasta can be super pricey but Basil really keeps the pricing fair! For 2 CYO, 2 sodas, 1 garlic bread, 1 cheesy garlic bread and a beer I believe we paid around $30. Super fair and the portions are HUGE! My only "complaint" is that the place isn't very clean. Initially it was a bit of a turn off but I gave the food a chance, thankfully :) read more

Make your own pasta, we ordered: penne, alfredo/bolognese, bacon, garlic, artichokes, tomato, parmesan, and basil. Added a caesar salad for $2.50 (lunch special). Total was around $13. Husband and I shared the salad and pasta, and it was plenty. It was so tasty, but the pasta seemed to be somewhat cold (some bites totally cold). Which is strange since they make it for you right when you order. The flavor and quality was great and reminded us of the little pasta bars in Italy. Decently priced pasta is nearly impossible to find in Vancouver which is an absolute joke because of how inexpensive it is to make. Pasta noodles are amongst the cheapest products to buy at any supermarket and easiest to prepare yet when they are cooked and served with any type of sauce in a restaurant the price skyrockets and it's just not acceptable. Basil Pasta Bar changes that concept in a very delicious way. The prices are still around the same as they were when they first opened ( $7.95 for all pasta except Gnocchi, Ravioli, Farfalle & W.W Penne extra 99￠, Gluten free extra 1.99) They have house specials, daily specials and a make your own pasta option at the same set prices. Also for 10.95 you get a drink and a piece of garlic bread or for 11.95 you get a drink and a side salad with your dish ( again the additional costs still apply for the type of pasta you choose) It's a small little restaurant that does fill up quickly and the kitchen is open so you can see the chefs preparing your food which is a plus. It was tasty, but I wish there was more "add-ins" and less pasta... the ratio seemed a bit off for my personal preference. Tried this place as I was in the neighbourhood and the prices seemed great. Ordered the minestrone soup, pesto shrimp linguine, and the four cheese ravioli to share between myself and the gf. Not sure why they didn't serve the soup first and chose to serve all 3 dishes at once so my food got a little colder than necessary as I finished my soup. Doesn't help that the pasta itself was not particularly hot, this was actually to my liking however but it might be a concern if you're getting it to go. I felt the pasta was cooked perfectly though and quite al dente. I thought the pesto shrimp linguine needed a dash of salt which was an easy fix. Portions are great and the service was friendly. It's a casual place, not upscale. The portions actually were a bit bigger for takeout as opposed to dine in. Food: nothing special. Think of it as the old spaghetti factory with more options for pasta and more choices of vegetables. The build-your-own pasta is very popular, and ensures you get a lot of vegetables. Mind you, my partner discovered the certain vegetables and meat go together with different types of pasta as opposed to others due to the moisture level - but, well, it's a learning experience. Both the fettucini alfredo and ravioli were flavorful, as was the salad. The gnocchi was good; however the bolognese meat sauce was more watery than hoped for. Portions: for dine the portions could be a little bigger, but the amount of vegetables you can pack in and the combo offers still make it reasonable value. Absolutely do not go here. It is rubbish. I made the mistake of looking for a cheap Italian restaurant. My boyfriend and I were looking for a restaurant to eat while staying in Vancouver and I found this place, which had great looking pasta in their photos. When we got there, we realized it wasn't really what we expected. You order up front and they bring it to you. So, if you're hoping for something classier, like a waiter, I would suggest going elsewhere. I ordered the Mediterranean dish, and my boyfriend ordered the Maple Bacon dish. Firstly, it took about half an hour to get our food. It is in such a small facility and they only had ONE chef cooking all the in-house and to-go orders. So, not only did it take forever to get our food, but it was crowded by people waiting for their to-go orders and delivery people. When we did finally get our food, I very confused by what we received. Firstly, in the Mediterranean it claimed they used pesto sauce. I have had pesto many time, and I didn't realize it consisted of just olive oil and green stuff. There was no pesto sauce, which means there was no taste at all. It tasted just like noodles in olive oil. I also, ordered a side of garlic bread, part of their combo, and received a piece of toast. My boyfriend ordered the Maple Bacon and received sweet pasta in a soup of red "sauce." Because it took so long to get our food, he was so hungry, he would eat anything. But, he thoroughly did not enjoy it at all. I can always count on this place for a solid good pasta dish. I love the fact that you can choose what you want in the pasta and what type of pasta/ sauce you want. Their pasta is always cooked well and everything is well balanced. I am never disappointed by the pasta that Basil Past Bar serves, and love bringing my friends here too! Very disappointing as I had previously ordered the spaghetti carbonara and thought it was decent. Opted for the "create your own dish" this time and was thoroughly disappointed! I chose the Alfredo as the sauce and had asked for extra sauce as that was my preference. However, it looked like they actually use LESS sauce as my pasta was super dry! To make it worse, whatever little sauce they did use didn't even taste like Alfredo sauce at all. I came here last year with my friends and greatly enjoyed the variety of pasta available, so I decided to pay another visit with my friend. We had the Pesto Shrimp Linguine and the Chicken Curry Fettuccine. The Chicken Curry Fettuccine was very aromatic and came smelling very strongly of curry, but was not nearly spicy enough. It was almost a bit plain in taste. The Pesto Shrimp Linguine was better, though the pesto was faint, the sauce was lighter and much more enjoyable. However, I did not like the shrimp as it was tiny and did not add to the taste of the pasta, I would much rather that it not be included in the dish. I like the wide variety, and though I had higher expectations for the food, it offers for the good food and great portions for the price. read more

We came here with high hopes of a flavourful filling dinner. I should have trusted my gut and turned around when I walked in. First thing I noticed was the dirt. Look at the floors, walls, tables. This place is in serious need of a deep clean. Not just some half engaged temporary workers running a dirty dish cloth across the tables. I ordered bow tie pasta, rose, chicken, some veggies and parmesan. The one highlight was the pasta. It was perfectly cooked. The rose sauce, which can be a great combination of rich tomato sauce and flavourful Alfredo sauce, was more like cream of tomato soup mixed with water. My vegetables were RAW. Not slightly sautéed, but absolutely raw. Oh and there was a piece of rotten red pepper. At first I thought it was a piece of pepper that hadn't ripened, but when I touched it, it was definetly slimy. I also ordered a Caesar salad. It was larger than I expected, and the capers were a nice touch. But the tiny croutons and wilted romaine didn't make the cut. I get that is a tough business. I work in the field. But when a restaurant cares so little for its customers that it doesn't clean and serves rotten food on chipped dishes (which is a health code violation - all 6 dishes that we were given were chipped) is days are numbered. I'm going to be extremely frank here. I am someone who rarely complains unless necessary and I'm not hard to satisfy; however the staff here are incredibly rude and upsetting that I am never coming back here. This was the worst experience I've had in my whole life. Food: first of all salmon was really salty, sauce, not quite enough to go with the amount of pasta served. I do agree that pricewise its a big portion, but they precook the pasta and let it sit there for long periods of time. And then go skimpy on the sauce and ingredients, enough just to coat the pasta. When I ordered my pasta, first of all there was no chicken that I asked for. I sent it back and the server, a skinny Caucasian brown haired girl had no sympathy and was giving us attitude. I got the pasta back and it was barely lukewarm. By then I lost my appetite. I took it up to the counter and another girl, Asian, with glasses, slight accent and pigtail braids was even MORE rude. She just shrugged and acted like it wasn't their problem. Soooo what do you want us to do then....? I was more upset about the way I was treated, and most importantly i wasn't being rude at all. Thing is, they don't care about complaints or their customers. They're a small business that just cares about money. Disappointing. Made a pickup order. The staff were rude and made no attempt to make me feel like I was welcome. One of the workers in the kitchen kept staring at me. I clearly stated on the call that I can't have cheese in my meal and sure enough there was leaving me to have to pick it off. Pasta was very basic. Watery/ Oil at the bottom. I was in the area with my friend, so we decided to give this location a try. It was an okay experience, nothing fancy, looks better than it tastes. The portions were average, although I did end up having 1/3 of my plate packed to take home. Overall I had a better 4/5 experience at their kits location, but I don't think I'll return to either locations after seeing all that grease. I LOVE THIS PLACE. I've been craving a chill pasta place that's not so fancy or gourmet but is still great quality. This place has a lot to choose from because you could build your own pasta. There were no limits on the amount of veggies and some of the meats were no extra charge and it was only about 7.95! I so want to come back and try new combinations!! I also ordered the house salad which was also amazing and came with delicious goat cheese. Oh yeah, if you get goat cheese on your pasta, be prepared, it is a lot!
