Been eating at Basil's since 2012! I work at the restaurant down from them and I've had lunch and dinner here more times than I can count. Delicious and consistent. My favorites are a gyro on pita and the south of the border wrap with a side of mashed potatoes. Basil's is a chicken joint but you gotta get the gyro at least once, trust, it's so good. The gyro and south of the border are packed with meat and veg too. They don't skimp on the stuffing. The baklava isn't too sweet and very flaky. The owners and all the workers are so nice. Pretty good I arrived for lunch not long after they opened and started looking over their overhead menu board. Just before it was my turn to order one of the staff put the finishing touches on a white board of new menu items and propped it up next to me. The first item immediately caught my attention, Chicken Pot Pie, and that's what I got. I asked about their popular side items and selected their coleslaw, which I was told has small pieces of pineapple. The pot pie was pretty good, shredded chicken and vegetables in a watery sauce or broth. While the dish wasn't a standout, I appreciated being able to get something that wasn't just pieces of chicken plus stuff. I have been eating here since the 90's and it has always been a go to for me when I want to pick up a light meal. The last 3 times I have gone the food quality has gone way down hill. This last time I vowed I would never spend my money there again. The chicken dinner I bought was obviously at least a day old and microwaved. Quality is not worth the money. My husband and I ordered a half slab of ribs and two piece chicken dinner. The ribs were very small, and doubtful that it was a half slab chicken was completely dry and had no flavor. The mac & cheese was good but the Greek salad was drenched and water and very soggy. 11/17/2022 I had eaten here once before for lunch and was very pleased, so I went back today which is a month later than my previous visit, and ordered the same thing. The chicken soup smelled horribly old.. The chicken thighs tasted old as well. The salad and rice were tasty but the rice was cold. I called to tell the little girl/young woman who worked the register and took my order my thinking the chicken was not proper for customers, not to ask for a refund but to let her know something was very wrong and they should have a taste themselves, just so they know. It is possible to have an off day. She wished to argue with me but I would have none of her ridiculous excuses of how I must be wrong about my thoughts and opinions. Really??!! The little girl/young woman, whom I believe is a relative of the owner, did not seem to care that I was offering her information that might be helpful. She was obstinate and wished to argue that I'm the only one who had complained today.. I said this could be just a one-off...towards the end of their night with food and when I walked in. She should be gracious as she is a representative of the store, an employee of the company if she wishes to have repeat customers and not argue with them as though they, the customers are liars. Instead, it would make a good business practice to provide customers with q gracious thank you for letting us know and I will check into it immediately. I have no reason to lie to her. I will not be back. The chicken smelled like it was old and freezer burned. Perhaps many of you know that smell. I was just sharing information with her because I initially like the place very much and wish them well and still wish them well.. Perhaps sometimes the customer may be and are right this time. Okay, an update, fwiw, on my most recent visit to Basil's ...store at the corner of McIntosh and Bee Ridge Sarasota. I haven't been getting out much to restaurants,, just haven't felt like it with all the disease issues flying around and I'm not talkin just covid 19 or its variants. All I wanted to do waz go out and get a cup of coffee, and my wife talked me into going over to Basil's. Ordered the typical chicken dinner ...with a couple extra pieces of chicken. Thing is, the people in front of us had a huge order for takeout ....took like 20 - 25 minutes...ok no problem. I thought I would be next in line and that would be that. Waited, waited, waited,.... what's going on? What's going on is they're filling orders for takeout call ins and app deals..without enough personnel to manage the orders.... and completely ignoring the dining room. Anyway, when they finally got to me I just said throw it in the bag I'll take it home like everybody else. I guess we're at the point where no one wants to go out and enjoy a meal with a dining room experience. With that, people are paying a food premium for a dining room experience and having the food delivered home....? Have your chicken delivered from Publix it's cheaper. All in all, it may be a better business model for them to adopt to full take out and find real estate where they can have a drive up. They've always had takeout it just seems that it's more intense.... where the dining room always seem to be first. The rest of the story goes... I took the food home and the extra chicken that I paid for wasn't in the bag.... I guess you have to expect that with takeout. Drove back to the store for a refund ...they couldn't do the refund on the computer register to my credit card... they gave me the missing chicken and off I went ...sometimes it's just not in the atmosphere to enjoy. Now I'm venting here my experience..fwiw. One additional thing that has changed with the employees. The guy who serves up the food used to wear a hairnet ...he's got long hair to his shoulders. This is probably my real problem with the whole experience... the employees do not seem to exhibit care anymore.... especially with what's happening. I guess I'll have to chalk it all up to the signs of the times... takeout ...is taking over. The chicken is the best ever. Get the half bird dinner. My problem is that each time I come her I can smell the bathrooms half through the place. They need to get rid of the strong deodorizer cakes, clean them good and put in newer, more subtle deodorizers. I make a point to sit on the far north side. read more

Been going to Basil's for a long time. Love their hot wings and love the gyro! I also enjoy a Basil's Salad quite often. I go to the one on 64 right next to the tire shop. About a year ago it seemed like it was going downhill a little bit, but I think some new people took over now. The last few times I have gone there the food has been great! They really stepped it up. When I called the restaurant to give them a heads up, the manager was very rude to me and insisted that it was "sugar" not mold. We have been patrons of Basil's since they opened, but I'm not sure we will go back. Ordered lunch for pickup, only to get home and discover my spinach pie was burned. The top and bottom layer of phyllo was covered in black char to the point that it was inedible. I have never received burned food from them before, so I called to complain. The woman who took my order apologized for not checking it and offered to deliver a new one an hour later. I totally understand that they are busy and possibly understaffed, but I did not have a hour to wait, so I requested a refund. I was fine with that. It happens, not a big deal. I was disappointed, but I ate my salad and tossed the burnt pie. An hour later, I got a call from the cook telling me it wasn't burnt and that I didn't understand how "they" prepare it. (I love their spinach pie, have ordered it many times in the past and it has never been burnt, mind you.) He offered to bring a new one and asked if he could see the "burnt" one and laughed when I said I threw it out. I am willing to overlook mistakes, but he was rude and condescending. I don't know why I decided to give this dump another shot. Read my prior review re: cold chicken Gyro if you can. I was starving and around the block so it occurred to me, maybe I can have them add hot, grilled chicken from the 50+ chickens they have on the grill when assembling my Gyro... I was wrong. When the guy started adding cold chicken salad, I kindly asked him to put hot chicken, and he said he could not. He said he could "microwave" my chicken, to what I replied " I don't want microwaved chicken". After asking every single person behind the counter why I couldn't have fresh hot chicken in my Gyro, instead of cold chicken like-salad - nobody was able to give me a logical explanation. I even offered to pay extra if that was the case. I just asked for my money back and left. Anyway, I would also like to state that during my visit no employee wore gloves, or had any food safety awareness whatsoever. The "Gyro guy" got the pita off a drawer with his hands, after emptying the trash, as another employee picked chicken pieces of the grill with his hands, to eat them in front of customers. The chicken and ribs are always worth getting - however, went there two nights ago and not a single employee was wearing a mask when we are in the middle of news-making COVID-19 numbers. My wife and I went to Basil's on 64 last night and it was terrible. We don't plan on going back. If I could give it 0 stars I would. She had the Mediteranian Wrap with a small side salad and I had the Ribs and Chicken combo. The wrap had chicken and iceberg lettuce with a little feta cheese. It was bland. The salad was very small with iceberg, one olive and hardly any feta cheese. My ribs and chicken tasted like they were boiled first and then cooked on the flame grille. Both didn't meet my expectations of Greek food. We both had Baklava for desert and it came out of the refrigerator and you needed a knife to cut it. It wasn't up to par. How about make better chicken! Maybe I was just there at a bad time or something but I would not recommend. Even when you call ahead the answer is "Hello...." so you're not even sure you're calling the right spot.
