The doctor and eye exam were fine, but do not order frame glasses here. I ordered a pair and waited three weeks. The moment I put them on, they made me extremely dizzy and were clearly not a proper fit. I told the optical staff that the lenses were likely made incorrectly, but they insisted it was an issue with the prescription. They required me to return for another vision test, even though the prescription was not the problem. I used the same new prescription to order glasses online, and those fit perfectly. It is the exact same prescription. I don't understand how the staff could assume the lenses were made correctly without checking anything. On top of that, I was made to wait in the office all morning despite clearly stating that I needed to go to work and could not stay that long. My comment was completely ignored. I am very disappointed with this purchase and the service. I will not be returning to this optical shop. read more

I brought in a current prescription and enjoyed my experience there. All the staff were very friendly and very professional. I especially like my doctor there. Her name is Dr. LIU she is very helpful in helping me as I do have diabetes now, so she hast to really carefully look in my eyes and do her check ups frequently. The lady at the eyeglass counter never looks very happy though , the ladies at the front are nice enough I just really enjoy talking to my specific doctor. Dr. LIU is very personable and most of the medical assistants are very nice as well and it seems to me that it's kind of easy to get an appointment and if you need your prescriptions, they'll send it to your house no problem, close to other places if you want to go shopping like Starbucks or Luckys or target, parking is easy. You just need to use a elevator or the stairs to get to the second floor. read more

Batra Institute is the best in the Bay area. I've been coming here for years when I moved to East Bay. The care I get from Dr. Moyer is unfathomable. She is kind and smart and mostly thorough. I started with Dr. Batra, who is awesome, and then Dr. Moyer when he says don't worry, she is good, you will love her. He was right!! She is busy months in advance. Hands down the best care on the Bay. The frames you have to choose from are the best. Designers Tom Ford, Gucci, and more. This review is for the Castro Valley location. BEWARE! Dr. Buch is no longer there and was replaced by Dr. Chui. I finished my appointment with Dr. Darren Lee (the optometrist who is more than 5 stars!) and was expecting to see Dr. Chui after my eyes were dilated (Drs. Batra and Buch always did the final exam). I then got a message that Dr. Chui refused to exam me because I have VSP insurance and he cannot bill them for how he values his time. He doesn't care about patients or their eyecare, just the almighty buck. Just as well...I overheard him speaking with another patient and he is quite the sales guy when it comes to picking lenses for cataract surgery...another example of his real "mission". I will not be going back here ever again. I paid out of pocket to get my vision check so that I could get a new prescription to oder prescription sunglasses online. I paid almost $200 and they wrote my prescription but when I asked them for my PD which is needed for ordering prescription glasses online they wanted to charge me wver more. They asked if I had gotten prescription glasses from them before and I did. But they dont know how to keep their records and since she "couldn't find" it in my records she said she would have to chage me. This place is a joke and it's not the first time they have misplaced my records. Last time they couldn't find my old prescription because something was wrong with their system so they had to write me a new prescription for free. If I can give them 0 star I would love to do. I have been here for 4 years and it getting worst. Even you have an appointment but you have to wait at least 30 minutes before they call you. I went here today because I need the new prescription for my contact lenses. It's so irritation after I went through all examination and eyes dilation that took me about 2 hours. I told them to give me the new prescription for my contact lanes but they gave me the wrong one from last year!!! I didn't read it before I went home because my eyes couldn't focus after dilation. Very disappointed I only ordered my glasses and contact lanes here but this year Nope!! The price increased from $50 to $80 per box for contact lane. I was recommended to Dr. Batra from my optometrist for PRK surgery. Dr. Batra himself was super informative but the entire process of getting a consultation to trying to schedule a PRK surgey has been a nightmare. I waited almost 1 hour to do my consultation and eye exam even though I had an appointment. Once I got my consultation, it took 5 different calls to speak to the receptionist who did the scheduling. I left numerous messages and never heard back. When I finally got through, the scheduling receptionist scheduled my PRK surgery and then said that she would follow up, which she never did. After the constant following up, I lost trust in this practice. I'm sure the doctors are great but I've decided to do my PRK surgery with another team. read more

I have been using Batra services for at least 10 years. GOOD: My doctor Janice Moyer is outstanding. BAD: 1. The administrative part - some people are professional and nice. Others act like they don't want to be there. 2. They seldom answer the phone so you usually have to leave a message. 3. They have never returned my calls. All I want is a copy of my eye Rx. 4. Appointments overlap so patients sit in the medical chair longer than optometry/eye office that I have EVER been. I get the feeling that admin staff are understaffed. I blame that on the owner. I would discontinue using BATRA's services if it weren't for Dr. Moyer, a compassionate, well-educated, customer-friendly doctor. read more

I went in for a worrisome intermittent vision problem, and secondarily, to discuss cataract surgery, which I don't need urgently now. I was referred by a nearby optometrist. The elevator opens to a waiting room that is shared with a dentist, a chiropractor and and massage provider. I've never seen that before. After the usual paperwork, I was examined by office staff who seemed blissfully ignorant of what they were doing. Finally, I discussed my symptoms with Dr. Batra. To my amazement, he just ignored what I came in for and switched into cataract sales mode. He told me about three price levels for different types of cataract surgeries, and encouraged me to schedule the surgery soon. I also needed to return for an additional test. While scheduling the test, the office assistant repeatedly asked when I wanted to do the surgery and repeatedly ignored me when I said I had not yet decided to do it. I was unimpressed with the cheesy office arrangement and less impressed with the time-share style sales pitch. I found another doctor. read more

I've been a patient here for over 10 years and I've finally mustered up the courage to find a different optometrist (even if that means I have to drive further). Boy, am I glad I did. This place is a sad desolate shell of what it once was. The physicians don't really care about their patients. My prescription of my glasses weren't updated in over 2 years because the Dr said I didn't need to update it. Less than a year later, when I go to a different optometrist, the new Dr told me my vision has drastically gotten worse. I can finally see with my new prescription and I'm left speechless. I guess I can't be too surprised because the physicians at Batra try to spend the least amount of time possible doing a proper check on your eyes. Health is one of those things you shouldn't accept sub-par, unprofessional treatment on. It's pretty clear this place is relying on business from older, retired patients who don't have the means to find a better place to get their eyes checked. read more

Jessica in the optical shop is the worst and it is my belief she's racist. On 2 occasions and the only 2 times I've visited she tried to ignored me and provided the worst customer service every. I'm black, but my wife is Puerto Rican white passing and she's said she had a great experience and recommended I go. I've gone in only to by glasses since I see an optometrist at the other site, but the first time I went I'm standing in the middle of the shop waiting to learn how to purchase glasses and Jessica ignores me. I have to get her attention to learn how to purchase glasses. I should have took that as a sign for the rest of my experience. After looking around the shop some glasses she proceeds to charge me for the lenses and standard lenses. From my previous experience buying glasses at other shops, the rep goes over the different lens options, I have to ask for lens modification option for which she merely gives me a piece of paper with different lens options with nor descriptions. I have to ask what each option is. I asked for the non-glare without the blue light blocking tint, Jessica told me that was not possible, but I later asked their other optical shop location in Castro Valley (when they offered one) and I was told that Jessica lied. So I'm not presented with lenses mod options, SHE OVER CHARGED ME. Again, my wife purchase glasses from Jessica a few months before, we have the same insurance, but my charges were more. Of course, I return to adjust my charges and refund the differences which was a little more than $100. I go a second time since I'm with the sister optometry shop in CV, giving Jessica a chance to redeem herself, but I should have realized if you're racist you're not interested in redeeming yourself. Sure enough, I go yesterday, June 3, 2024, stand in the middle of the shop, Jessica is talking to some sort of sales person, not acknowledging me once. I wait 5 minutes in the middle of the shop looking at the 2 talk, not once am I acknowledged or even asked if I could wait. I leave to never return to any Batra property. The front office staff was fine by me. The only issue I had with the assistant was that a trainee conducted some of my exam (with Covid, I prefer to minimize unnecessary interactions and feel I should've been asked permission for someone else to administer eye drops rather than the person who'd initially been helping me). Other than that the assistant was pleasant and personable. The doctor was my major issue. Our interaction was all of about 4 minutes long. He didn't greet me. He examined my eyes, briefly, and told me his findings and what follow up was needed (one of which he didn't offer as a service). He then turned away from me and said "That's all". I was putting my contacts in so I could leave, and he repeated "That's all". It was rude and made me feel rushed. My former eye doc retired. This office was recommended to me by a friend. I will probably not be going back . Took a few weeks to get in (this is fine) . They are on a floor with two other offices (dental & retina). Waiting room chairs upholstry are stained and need a good cleaning. My appt was 8 am . I got there at 7:50 and wasn't taken back til 8:30 A.M. The doctor was fine (Liu), the woman at the front desk was fine/pleasant . After my exam, the "optician" was not in that day. A young lady helped me that doesn't normally work in there and took my contact order and collected my payment. She was great. I called the following Tuesday to check on the status of my contact lenses with their optical department. The woman that answered acted like she was mad at me for asking. She states she is behind because she was out of the office. I asked if they had any samples as I am on my last leg with one of my contact. I was put on hold and then she came back and said, NO (she would have to order it ) . I called again on Thursday, she was out at lunch. Called back after lunch left a voicemail. No return call. Called again today and was told she was with a patient and can I call back in 10 minutes? IF I go back , I will not use their optician for glasses or my contact lenses. After the vision and glaucoma testing by the assistants, Dr. Batra showed up in the room but did not even look at me. He had his back to me the whole time, inputting information into the computer or examining the results from the tests. When I tried to ask him questions, he was already half-way out the door. I find it highly important to leave this review. If I were to describe my experience at Batra clinic in one word, it would simply be: unprofessional. The front desk looked lifeless and motionless, and to every question I asked, the answer was always "no" with no interest to understand, guide, or suggest. There was no quality service and support that was found in their approach. I created the appointment at this clinic several months in advance since this check up was important to me. Before The day of my appointment, my insurance company contacted me confirming my coverage with the clinic and also received a confirmation from the clinic after calling and ensuring if this information was correct. I was assured that I could come in and that they would take my details down so that I can attend to my appointment. However, I must emphasize how extremely frustrating their demeanor was. The individuals at the desk were absolutely lazy and negative. I found it quite inconvenient that they disagreed to accept me into my appointment since my insurance did not cover the session which they only realized once I arrived, with an expectation to be met with the doctor I had scheduled an appointment with for months. I found it quite perplexing that the receptionists at the desk still had their jobs, because they absolutely showed no initiative in checking if the doctor I was seeing was taking my insurance and refused to take responsibility for their mistakes and negligence. This facility shouldn't even call themselves a clinic when they show no empathy nor public service and most importantly, dont execute their expected tasks as per every medical administrative procedure which involves checking whether the doctor scheduled for per my insurance. If they did, it would have save me the hassle of leaving work early and tiresome drive to the clinic. As a patient, I did my due diligence of coordinating and communicating with both the clinic and insurance company. However, because of the clinic's negligence to duties, along with their unprofessional and uncaring work ethic, I suffered the negative consequences of not being able to meet with a doctor and losing time and gas simply because of their irresponsibility. (I posted this review under Dr. Batra's Yelp listing, but I also wanted it to show up here.) I took my 18-year-old daughter to Dr. Batra to confirm her previous keratoconus diagnosis, and to evaluate her for collagen cross-linking. The staff was extremely friendly and competent, from Danette, who handled the pre-authorization from our medical health insurance provider (which took six months, but we knew it would), to Brianne, who patiently explained the procedure to my daughter beforehand and stayed with us during the entire procedure, to Dr. Batra, who expertly explained and treated her condition. The procedure itself was painless and although my daughter was pretty nervous, he and Brianne did everything to put her at ease. She was fine the day after the procedure. The previous ophthalmologist we had seen and two more I inquired with did not take insurance and charged $8,000 for cross-linking. Dr. Batra accepted our insurance, and the treatment ended up costing $20 (our insurance co-pay), including the procedure itself and three follow-ups. Having participated in the clinical trials for this newly approved treatment, we had complete confidence in him. We saw two other doctors during the follow-ups and both were great. My daughter will have to return for follow-ups in a few months to see whether the treatment has successfully treated her keratonocus, but for now, I am extremely happy with the results and very grateful to Dr. Batra and his staff. read more

Very unprofessional. Nobody ever answers the phone and you have to keep calling for weeks just to get assistance. The staff just sits on their phones all day and doesn't pick up. They over charge you for services and then deliver your lens a month later. You call and get transferred to blank lines because nobody wants to help you. Bad service. Zero customer service. Under staffed or they don't care to put the customer first. Pay $500 for an example and frame to be treated poorly. Please train your staff better or hire a staffing agency who helps bring in high quality team members. Very Rude workers here. Nobody can ever answer your question and they say they don't know. Paid to lounge. Zero stars. Pick up and help the patients or ignore the patients and cause the company a bad reputation. read more

The doctors here are pretty helpful and know what they're doing for the most part. The front staff does not. I made an appointment for my yearly exam but they didn't schedule my contact portion. So I came in for half of it and was told to come back in 3 weeks (because of the holiday). Fine, I came back only to hear from the doctor "I don't have your contacts so we can't do a fitting today. No one told me you were coming." I had to come back another week later to pick them up and another week after that for the fitting appointment. When I left Dr. Huang she just said have a nice holiday. I went to the front desk and they said I was all set. A week goes by and I call to ask if my contacts have come in and they were never ordered. No one told me where I had to go after my appointment so I went to the wrong person. Oh, and I wasn't charged my copay that day because they didn't look at anything in my chart when they checked me out. I'm never coming back here. There is such a communication disconnect in this place. And the patients end up having their time wasted. Don't come here expecting people to know how to do their jobs. read more

They are "nice" until you have a surgery. I took my mom in for a cataract surgery with Dr. Batra. He said we could pick from 3 plans: the basic for $700, laser-assisted for $1800, or an upgraded lens for $3800. Surgery for the eye went well. They had of-course signed us up for the basic manual surgery after charging for the laser assisted one. The surgery center made calls to the office and asked for paperwork and got my mom the right surgery. Next day, took my mom in for a post-surgery visit. Saw the doctor in the office walking around, but after making us wait, he was still too busy to see my mom. So they had her see Dr Bronn, who pretty much spent the time reading us my mom's chart and her prescription (because obviously only professional doctors can read). Found out two weeks later that he does not see patients at all post surgery because that is not his role. No one told us that while he examined her post-operation that he was not qualified to do so. read more

On August 12, 2019, an appointment was made for me to see an Optometrist, Dr, Huang and Ophthalmologist, Dr. Kothari. I was examined by several technicians and then afterward by Dr. Kothari. After completion, I was told I can collect my Rx at the front desk. When I asked to see Dr. Huang I was told it would not be necessary as Dr. K had already examined me even though my appointment was to have been with both persons. When I visited Costco to have my Rx filled I was told there was an error in the Rx. The left axis showed zero. So I had to come away and make another appointment with Castro Valley Eye Center next week. I called Batra and left a voice mail complaining about the atrocious service. I appreciated how the staff coordinated a later surgery time to accommodate my schedule. The surgery went well overall with only one slight complication - during the 1 week check-in, I was found to be healing quickly. Ugh! What a rip off! So I was referred to this office from my optometrist because of a possible retinitis-pigmentosa on my right eye. For the sake of my eyes and VISION, I went to get checked. They ran a series of tests, took some pictures, and sent me home after billing me for almost $400. OK?! I'm sure they know exactly what an annual eye exam consist of - the normal peripheral test, dilation, and basic vision test. THEY RAN THESE TESTS AGAIN ON ME after I already told them I had an eye exam recently. I could have brought my file in with me for them to take a look, but they insisted to do the tests again. I also took a color-blind test (?) and the 3-D test. All these tests didn't give me the answers that I wanted - do I have retinitis-pigmentosa or what? When I arrived they had me watching videos for about an hour. Ok then the eye exam but this was not an exam for Lasix but my eye exam for glasses. Which they will charge you for without even telling you. When I was done with the exam they sent me to the back to get the prices for Lasix. I had not even sat down when the lady said to me in these exact words "do you want the Lasix that hurts or for a thousand more dollars the one that doesn't hurt?" WTF?????? Then I called 1800contacts to place my order for more contacts and of course they have to verify my Rx with Batra. But they told them they could not send me my contacts because I needed my annual exam. Again WTF????? So I call the office and ask why I could not get my contacts if I was just in the office for my exam. Jessica then tells me because I needed a contact fitting and would be an additional $70. I told her when I was there I was wearing my contacts and all other eye exams I have had the last 20 years never charge extra. It's the same prescription wether you are getting glasses or contacts. Poorly managed office! I was there in 2017 but am still being harassed for payment i should not be charged for. The appointment started with me waiting for a whole hour since the doctor was "delayed". After this i have decided not to ever go to this practice. And then the billing harassment started wanting to charge me for a visit that was covered by my insurance at the time. I got poked in the eye by one of their instruments during the exam process. Strike one. Physician completely disregarded that she was bringing the probe far too close to my eye trying to visualize it and then, JAB. I do not believe she cleaned the instrument afterward. Incompetent and gross. From top to bottom, the care provided here seemed inadequate, the physician incompetent and disorganized. I have had better experiences walking in to a Costco or Walmart Vision Center. I am 27 years old and they wanted to give me a glaucoma test and dilate my pupils. Strike 2. Her rationale when prompted, "you should be getting this yearly." Please note, the National Institutes of Health recommends a yearly dilated eye exam if you're 60 or older" OR these exams can be done earlier if you have a history of conditions that would warrant the exam (diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, macular degeneration). On intake, the physician was expressly told, I do not have any of these conditions. What....are you doing..... The most problematic, the physician is grossly irresponsible. The straw that broke the camels back was when I told the physician, "I drove myself here and I have to drive myself back. I do not think the dilatation exam is safe to do for me today." She retorted back to me, "it only affects your near sighted vision. It'll be fine. You can still do it today." And when I deferred the exam, she acted like I was doing something egregiously wrong for not following her advice. Again please note, most eye doctors will advise their patients to arrange for a caregiver to drive them home after this exam (IF IT IS INDICATED IN THE FIRST PLACE, WHICH IT WAS NOT FOR ME). Taken word for word from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, "While your eyes are dilated, your vision will be blurry. You will have trouble focusing on close objects. You also will be extra sensitive to bright light. If your eyes will be dilated for an exam or procedure, bring sunglasses with you. They will help with the glare and light sensitivity when you leave your appointment. The effects of dilating eye drops last a few hours. Your eye doctor cannot tell you how blurry your vision will be and for how long. That depends on the type of dilating eye drop used and how your eyes react. It may not be safe to drive yourself after having your eyes dilated. You should make arrangements to have someone drive you after your appointment." No matter what drops you use, you never know how someone is going to react to them the first time. A responsible provider would be conservative and advocate for their patient to make safe arrangements. Not here. "It'll be fine. Let's do it anyway." Strike three. Look, I came in for an annual and for a new contact lens prescription. My goals of care WERE NOT to have unsafe medical practices performed on me, get in a car accident, and die on the way home. Generally, I prefer for mortality risk to be low when I go in for physicals and annuals. If you agree, I would caution you before you go to this office. If you can't get the basics right, what in the world are you doing for your complicated patients.... read more

I have nothing but wonderful experiences with Dr Batra and his office staff. (They tolerate my whining when I have to have the eye pressure test EVERY time I go for pre-LASIK consults, they're thorough and I'm a slightly high strung wimp). Dr Batra himself is very personable and approachable, clearly explaining all the procedures and the different options and why his opinion on why his professional recommendation is what it is. He is incredibly THOROUGH. My god. 6 months of treating my chronic dry eye before LASIK. At first I didn't understand what the big deal was. Now that I've had the procedure I can only imagine what it would have been like without all the prep work. I appreciate his standards and commitment to those standards. My eyes appreciate it too. As for the office staff. They are delightful. I've had nothing but positive experiences and they are all quite helpful and handle "sensitive" insurance and billing issues gently and respectfully. I also appreciate that they always have samples of drops that I can load up on before committing to the purchase myself. Their patient advisor, Claudia, is particularly sweet and helpful. She walked me through all of the financial issues, my options, etc. The ONLY down side is that Dr Batra no longer has an SF office so I have to make the trek to San Leandro from San Francisco. I had appointments at least once a month for several months, so it was a little daunting. My father was treated by Dr Batra and we've referred several family friends-- one of whom is a photographer so her vision is crucial. We all have rave reviews. I've been coming to this practice for several years now and it has become sort of my one-stop shop for visiting an eye doctor as well as fitting contacts. I used to visit both an optometrist and an ophthalmologist on a regular basis (like most people, I'm sure) until I migrated over here. There are a few eye doctors in Castro Valley closer to home, but I've really liked the experience I've had with Dr. Batra and co. First off, I'd like to say that their office is clean, well-kept, nice and bright and has that "healthy", vibrant look as opposed to an antiseptic one. I want to add that this particular office is a 'new' one; their old one was OLD. Truly OLD. Unless you consider 70's-style wood paneling the new in-thing. Honestly, though, that "old" office never stopped me from coming back to Dr. Batra for taking care of my eyes. My first visit, while probably not memorable for him, was certainly memorable for me. Originally, I had been a patient of another San Leandro eye doctor for many years. I had grown so accustomed to being talked down to by His Majesty, Herr Doktor, that I thought that this was the price to pay for good eye care. I mean... we're talking about my eyes, not my gallbladder! You will compromise MUCH for good care of your eyes as anyone well knows. Eventually, though, I gambled and visited another physician when I had an eye abrasion. Amazingly, I was treated like someone special (believe me, I'm not)! It might seem stupid to some readers, but their treatment of me over the years has become a sort of yardstick for me to measure other physicians. In short, I'm just glad I made the move. I read a negative review here of the practice regarding some "priceyness". At today's prices, I'd agree that most medical care seems insanely expensive. With decent insurance, it's manageable; but I can imagine that I'd be a bit 'hurt', as it were, if I had to pay completely out of pocket for everything. Perhaps this previous reviewer had to do so. I do confess to having purchased a pair of rather expensive (at least for me) prescription sunglasses on a visit there last year. My husband raised an eyebrow at the cost; he nearly raised it off his head! Yes, it was a splurge for me but a quick call to two other optometry offices to compare prices revealed about the same. This stuff is expensive if you want to get fancy! Just the same, I'm glad I have some place I can feel comfortable with. The staff is always friendly and -- while I'm not ignorant to think they remember EVERY patient (I, too, worked in customer service) -- at least they seem all trained to call me by name when I hit the front desk and greet me AS IF they remember me. It makes you feel warm, comfortable and SAFE when you visit their office. And I don't know what more one can ask when visiting a physician. read more
