Due to my changing insurances, today I had only my second appointment with Eye Specialists. My first was four years ago with Dr. Shah, and today I met with Dr. Kothari. Both were exceptional. Just as exceptional were the staff members who dilated me and prepped me for the doctors. Even more rare, the front office staff were some of the most expert I have ever encountered, and that is a review I rarely provide. I had Dr. Kothari once and thought she was very helpful. Unfortunately most of my other appointments have been with Dr. Buch and I'm not a fan. I feel like I get more information from the internet than I from an appointment with her. When I ask questions I get a minimal response. I've been going to Eye Specialties ever since I was referred there by my optometrist. They were able to determine that I have a precondition for glaucoma, and now I am on a prescription eye drop to help keep my eye pressures down and hopefully mitigate the chances/severity of developing glaucoma later on in life. I currently see Dr. Edelman, who is very experienced and a pleasure to chat with. I appreciate the thorough intake at appointments and the fact that they don't rush to suggest more elaborate procedures if they're not needed. I only just got an SLT procedure done on my right eye after a few years' worth of monitoring my condition, and so far so good! The staff is also great and very helpful. I will continue going to Eye Specialties for the fore-SEE-able future! read more

Awful, just plain awful. This is not a review on Dr. Edelman. This is a review on the front office/ receptionists. Although my first experience with Dr Edelman was a 5 star experience, you first have to get past the receptionists. My appointment has been re-scheduled 3 times now. I went in on a Friday just to be told that my appointment was on the following Monday. I went in on Monday and they said my appointment was on the following Thursday so I asked them to write it down and an appointment card which they did. This is after I provided full name, DOB and my insurance card. So I go in today and they tell me that they had mistaken be with someone with the same surname, that my appointment is actually the next Monday. Deborah explained all of this to me and I told her the whole story. She said it was human error and I replied two human error??? There is a sign in the office that patients that miss an appointment is subject to a $45 charge. I told Deborah that she owes me $135! She said she would waive my co-pay; $10. I missed 3 days of work due to human error, I'm glad they don't' make restaurant reservations. If they did I'd starve to death by now. I like Dr. Edelman, but really??? read more

Eye Specialties has been my go to for optometrists needs ffor the last 9 years. My visit today was a full eye exam. The optometrist who did measurements of my vision was pleasant and thorough. She dilated my eyes after her exam then I had to wait for them to open enough for the Doctor who was doing the rest of the exam. While I waited for that I looked at frames for my new glasses. The lady that helped me was very pleasant and did a really good job of selecting frames that she felt would look good on me. That process was quick and painless. They have a pretty good selection. If you want higher end glasses like Maui Jim's, Rayban or something similar they don't have them. Dr Shah did the rest of the exam. She was very enthusiastic and easy to talk to . She explained what she was checking and why. Overall a good experience. They told me a few days in advance that i should prepare for a 2 to 2 1/2 hour appointment. My was just a touch over an hour total. It couldn't have gone better. read more

I was disappointed by the staff and the eye Dr. no compassion or connection. The staff had tension. Lack of professionalism all the way around. I was referred to Dr Eldemam but instead had a very fast paced female Dr who rushed the appointment, asked a question and then interrupts my answer on multiple occasions. She was so fast in looking in my eyes that I have no trust it was thorough. Lens crafters did a better job. Dr. Robert Edelman's staff are very rude. I spoke with Vickie and with the officer manager. Both staff members treated me poorly; they did not answer my questions; they did not follow up on my requests; they talked to me with contempt, as if I should know the answers: "Didn't you make the appointment? I expect that my optometrist was competent, here. He wasn't especially nice, or icky, but he was competent. However: I will never, ever go back. When I got there, the folks behind the desk at the lobby slid their translucent glass pane back to offer me help, and they were so over-scented that the smell wafted out, strong perfume, into the lobby, and I actively sneezed, and even developed a slight headache. I'm not fond of perfume, but I can live with it in moderation. This was unreasonable for a medical clinic. While I was with the optometrist, the doctor (ophthalmologist, I suppose, but clearly The Doctor there) yelled at an optometrist for using the wrong tool, he should have used the forty-cent disposable thing, not the sixty-cent one, yell yell yell. And this was all in front of another patient, ick! She looked like she wanted to slide into the floor. Across the hall, I winced for the optometrist. When it came time for me to visit the optician for new glasses she *yelled* at the optometrist that her lunch hour started in ten minutes and she was waiting for a vendor anyway, so he should tell me to go away and come back in 90 minutes. So go away I did. I asked some friends (because this was before I knew about yelp), one recommended an optician in Berkeley, and I went there. Even though they're a schlep away, much farther for me than Castro Valley, and the parking is a pain there, it's such a nice place that it's worth the trip. read more

I truly feel fortunate to have Dr. Edelman as my ophthalmologist. Recently he removed cataracts from both my eyes. He explained the procedure in easy-to-understand comprehensive detail and fully answered all my questions. The operations themselves could not have been done in a more professional and reassuring manner. Moreover, in the evening of the day of each operation, Dr. Edelman personally called me to follow up on my status, progress and well-being. Each of my follow-up appointments was done most thoroughly and in a caring and professional atmosphere. Dr. Edelman has earned my top-rating the hard way by working for it. Dr. Edelman very slow and arrogant. He is not sanitary and does not change gloves between patients ewww. (Makes me wonder if he even washes his hands after using the bathroom). There are always long waits, it would be nice if we were updated to let us know that the Dr. was running late, but no courtesy call or updates as we wait in the waiting room. Apparently our time (unlike his) is not important. He does have have enough doctors in his office to properly see everyone he books and for that reason his office has called me on numerous occasions to reschedule my appointment. His staff is not friendly, dont expect a smile when you walk in or ever when communicating with them. (makes for an excellent experience - not). They don't even acknowledge you when you walk into the office. The only person I can say good things about is Debbie, she is always smiling and ready to help. The office manager does not return calls. How am I supposed to get anything done? Everyone at the office seems unhappy and stressed out as if they do not want to be there. Additionally, they are uncooperative, if you are fortunate like I am and have 2 insurances, they REFUSE to bill your second insurance....umm.....isn't that their job? I don't understand why they'd refuse the additional money. I'd avoid this place and find yourself a much happier office who cares for you as a person and patient. read more

He is friendly as are the staff I encountered. I also met with Doctor Fong who performed my first eye tests in years. He was wonderful to work with as well. I wasn't planning to write this review - I only clicked on Dr. Edelman's Yelp reviews because I recommended him to a friend and wanted to send my friend a reference with opinions other than my own. But now that I'm here, and saw a couple of really dumb reviews below (sorry, I have to call a spade a spade), I felt I really do have to weigh in and say, first off, that as a patient of Dr. Edelman --not for glasses, but for cataract surgery-- I agree, strongly agree, with the other 5-star reviews you can read below, and for the same reasons. I was referred to Dr. Edelman by two prominent Bay Area doctors who know him and respect him, and who, as medical professionals, are (wouldn't you agree?) in a better position to assess Dr. Edelman's competence than the people who speculate below on such things as glove changes, and are bothered by long wait-times. Hey! this is not fast food, it's ophthalmologic care of the highest order! and Dr. Edelman's patients who understand that are the ones (the 5-star people below) whose opinion I share. (Don't you hate it when you hear ignorant, uninformed people say, "well, that's just YOUR opinion"? Sure.. okay... if you're someone who believes all opinions are equal, equally valid.) But look, if you know doctors who not only refer patients to Dr. Edelman but go to him themselves for cataract surgery, don't you think they know something about him more important than his location and proximity to your home? read more

Very disappointed in service. We arrived ten minutes before our scheduled appointment and still waited over TWO HOURS to be seen by optometrist. There was no explanation from staff or doctor or apologies for the wait. Once seen by doctor she was unfriendly and rude, wanting to speed through the appointment and losing patience with my daughter when she questioned which choice was clearer ..one or two? taking a deep sigh and repeating..one or two? again. The entire appointment took less than ten minutes. My family will NEVER return to this office! This is the first negative review I've ever posted. I am normally understanding, but found this experience pushed me to take this action. :( read more

I was reading the reviews and I could not disagree more. I take my grandfather to Dr. Edelman and although the wait time can be long sometimes, I understand its for a good reason. Dr. Edelman takes his time and does not make you feel like he's rushing you out of the office. As for the staff all the girls are exceptionally nice to me and my grand dad. The girls in the front office do tend to get very busy but have always been very attentive, sweet and helpful. I haven't had any eye problems myself but when I do or my friends I always will refer to Dr. Edelman. read more

I cannot imagine a better eye specialist than Dr. Robert Edelman. He has performed two eye surgeries and three laser treatments on my eyes and all have been highly successful. I feel very fortunate to have such a brilliant doctor in my area; his office contains all the latest technology and his staff are all very caring and loyal and have been with him for years. He takes time with each patient and explains in detail what the procedures are, so we don't mind waiting because he will take time with us as well. Their optical shop has a good selection and they offer low-priced eyewear and senior discounts (as well as designer frames). Best doctor, worst nurses. Scheduled me for 5:15pm appointment, didn't get to see the doctor until 7:30pm. And finish at 8:15pm. Just because the nurse overbooked. Doctor ordered a MRI for me. 20 days after the MRI procedure, I didn't hear anything back from the doctor (keep that in mind that this doctor is very follow thru), I call the office. Debra picked up the phone without "hello" or "hi". Rushed to end the conversation without giving me any instructions. She just try to direct me to somewhere else, she doesn't even know where, no direct phone number, no department, no name. As long as is not her. She stated the hospital is not a usual place for them for order the MRI. I told her I didn't schedule this. It's the doctor or the office contacted the hospital, so the hospital contacted me to schedule the scan. Or else, the hospital won't have my phone number. She stated that I should always have an option to go elsewhere. I told her in this case, there is no any other place to call me to schedule the scan. Therefore, I didn't have any option to go the place they prefer. Then Debra said she is not the one who will gather the results. So she is trying to direct me to somewhere else. (2nd time in just 1 phone call.) I tried to tell her twice that the hospital stated that they will send the scan result to the doctor at the next business day. Which is May 1st. Both time, she cut me off by saying something else before I can finish my sentence. Then I asked Debra, what is the normal time for them to receive the results. She said 7-10 days. In my case, it's 20 days. Then she try to ask me to call someone else, again, 3rd time. But doesn't know who to call, where to just, but just call someone else, that will speed up the process, according to Debra. Finally, Debra say one of the office staff will call me back once they have the result. Therefore, I ask her when should I heard back from the office. (Because I have no idea how long I have to wait again.) Debra said she doesn't know. So I told Debra I will call again tomorrow to see if the girl "who handle this business, but not Debra" will have any update. All suddenly, she said there will be someone to call me back before 5pm tomorrow. We will see. and will update the review. read more
