My experience (in 2023) with Dr. Patel was not good. Following his cataract surgery, I had double vision, which was worse when driving a vehicle on the freeway. After several visits, Turner Optometrist Christie Nguyen was only able to partially resolve my problem using a prism correction in my eye glasses. Without the help of Turner Eye Institute, I found an excellent optometrist (Wynn Nguyen Tran) who specialized in prisms and now I no longer have double vision, including while driving. Cataract surgery is reputed to be very successful in general. My case showed how things can go wrong. I am very grateful for Dr. Tran. Unfortunately, there are worse experiences than mine, for which there was no good resolution. read more

Worst customer service I have ever received in my entire life. After I went there and learned I was a candidate for surgery I reached out for simple follow up questions. I sent 3 emails and called 3 times over a month and was never able to get my patient counselor on the phone. I even confirmed she still works there. I won't name who she is (I have some sense of decency) but dang I am insanely frustrated. I have no recourse other than to leave a scathing review here. My clinic visit at their San Leandro office was pretty normal and pleasant. I was left ignored in a patient room for some twenty minutes - I marked the time because the automatic light kept turning off after 180 seconds or so, and I needed to wave my hand to turn it back on. Eventually, I was allowed to meet my friendly patient counselor who encouraged me to call/email her with follow-up questions. After this, I sent an email with questions. No response. Waited over a week, and sent another email. No response. Tried calling after another week. Again... crickets. My assigned patient counselor has ignored all my attempts to reach out to her about LASIK questions - in total this included three ignored emails, three ignored calls, and one ignored voicemail over a month. I wanted to ask hard-hitting questions like "Will I still need glasses after LASIK" and "Will this make my current near or far vision worse". Normal stuff. I have tried so unbelievably hard to get customer service from this clinic. This has been an excruciating waste of my time and energy when I am trying to throw thousands of dollars at them for a premium surgery. Unbelievable. read more

I was tired of wearing glasses and decided to look into Lasix. I made an appointment for a consultation. The doctor, Dr. Patel, said that I wasn't a candidate for Lasix because I had cataracts. I recall that another optometrist had told me that I had congenital cataracts but it wasn't bad at that time. Dr. Patel said that if my cataracts was removed, it would improve my sight. I got cataracts removed in both eyes and the staff were very thorough in explaining the procedure and post procedure. Everything went very smoothly for both eyes. I could see improvement right away. Colors were more vibrant and not as muted. I'm also a year out from having the surgery and the aftercare had been great. I see the optometrist every few months to monitor my progress. I am very appreciative of Turner Eye Institute for restoring my sight. read more

I bought a pair of glasses for $700, and the frame fell in parts in less than nine months caused by manufacturing defect. I asked TURNER EYE INSTITUTE to help me claim the warranty, but after many back and forth and two months of trying, it still wasn't successful. In the end, I contacted the manufacturer myself and got a new frame. However, a new problem arose: the old frames were discontinued, and the supplier gave me a new pair as compensation. There was a slight difference of about 0.01mm between the new and old frames. As a result, the existing lenses can't get fitted to the new frame. This could actually be fixed by grinding the lenses or adjusting the fit between the frame and lenses, but TURNER EYE INSTITUTE flatly refused to help, saying they couldn't provide that assistance and that I would have to spend nearly $300 more to get brand new lenses. Later, I went to Costco and got new lenses for only $69. To be fair, their representative was responsive and replied to my emails promptly. She was nice. However, for a customer who spent over $700 ($500 from insurance and $265 out of my own pocket) on a pair of glasses that broke (from manufacturing defect) in nine months, their unwillingness to take responsibility was terrible. I will never get glasses from them again. read more

Evaluation and procedure so far has gone well. The average rating is because of the Director (I think Tony?) who wanted payment before the surgery. This would have been fine but the way it was communicated was annoying and rude. He said if I didn't make payment the surgery would be cancelled. I've had other procedures done and they usually ask for some sort of payment or deposit at least. It's just the way it was communicated that left a bad taste. Just be nicer to your patients and clients who are paying thousands of dollars for a procedure. read more

You can read between the lines when they want you to go to their optometrists for a prescription after you've gone to their opthamologist for an eye issue. Great ophthalmologist! But his staff will hold your prescription ransom for $50. I'm a diabetic patient (which means he needs to see me often and the insurance pays beaux coups bucks, as do I) and I'm so irritated by this policy that I'm ready to find a different ophthalmologist. Each visit runs $400 twice a year, but they are so worried that I will take my script elsewhere that they won't hand it to me unless I pay $50. Even if their "in house optical" is too busy to see me. Additionally, don't be even slightly surprised when you are left to "wait for your eyes to dilate" for over 45 minutes. Yes, I timed it. Twice. According to the internet, it takes 15 minutes. Oh, and this last time they didn't even offer the disposable sunglasses, so I ended up having to drive home with everything so bright I could barely see. read more

It's really hard to find a good optometrist. I thought this place would be my new go to base off the reviews but I will have to keep looking and find somewhere else for my next exam. They are definitely unorganized and will charge you later on by sending you an unexpected bill. I've been here twice. I decided to give them a second chance and I wish I didn't. Everything was fine with the appointment until I received an unexpected bill for $150. When I was there at my appointment, the optician reviewed my insurance coverage and told me my balance would be $41 (and $10 up front for a copay---so weird they make you pay the copay separately at the front at the end of the visit). 3 months later I received the bill for $150. I went back and forth with the billing team and my insurance just to find out the optician quoted me wrong! Her math was obviously wrong because when they billed my insurance, the amount was short! If I had known the balance would be so high, I would not have bought contacts from them and got them elsewhere at Costco or something. I only bought contacts from them because the optician told me I had enough allowance from my insurance. Is that not sketchy that I paid a balance at the visit but then they charge me $150 more LATER??? Seriously! Why do I suffer because they did the math wrong and told me I should spend my allowance there by purchasing their merchandise. They also charge a PREMIUM price for contact lens fitting! Most places will charge you $150-200. This place charged me $250!!!! On top of the vision exam. A RIP OFF. DO NOT COME HERE. THEY ARE GREEDY. First review from 2022: 1. Dr Alcid speaks very soft and quiet. I could barely hear her throughout the exam. Wearing a mask unfortunately makes this situation worse. 2. I had issues with them regarding my dual VSP insurance. I let them know at the time of check in and it seemed like a big deal. They definitely aren't experienced with handling dual insurance patients. So much confusion on what covers what. A few other Yelp reviews note billing issues as well. 3. The optician who helped me find my glasses was really nice and helpful. She was very professional and explained everything well. She took her time to help me find the right frames. 4. I had to make an appointment to try on my new glasses. I scheduled a same day appointment to try them on and the receptionist told me 2:30 but when I got there at 2:35pm, I was told I was over 35 mins late because my appointment was actually 2! The optician was nice and apologized for the miscommunication but overall did not like feeling blamed for being extremely late. I also had to wait extra long since the 2:30 appointment was there. 5. The billing again is weird. I paid $128 at the time of my visit to cover my visit and glasses. Then a few weeks later I get a bill from them for $10. Unsure why so l gave them a call to see if it was a mistake since I had already given them $128. The billing person was pretty confusing and unhelpful. I get that it's just $10 but I just wanted to clarify I didn't already pay for it... she didn't clarify anything really. Just basically said I didn't pay for my exam at the time of my visit. I'm just going to pay for it and be done with this place. I'd rather take my business to a place where the doctors care to create rapport and where there is more transparency. I did come for a lasik exam a year ago and I thought it went really well. Unfortunately I had some health issues which prevented me from going through with the surgery but Dr Patel was nice and professional. The staff really took their time with me as well. read more

I also decided to have LASIK, and later had cataract surgery with Dr. Turner. During my visit for my consultation in San Leandro, all the staff working there were very welcoming and friendly. During all the tests, the doctors made sure I was comfortable. Dr. Patel went through the procedure with me verbally and answered any questions or concerns that I had. I was able to build that trust with him considering he was the one who performed the procedure on me. During the day of my surgery in Concord, all the staffs were very welcoming and friendly. They ran some more tests before the procedure just to make sure the measurements and all were correct. They walked me through the preparations and made sure I was comfortable and not nervous. I felt right at home. During the surgery, Dr. Patel walked me through every single step while performing the procedure. I felt very comfortable and relaxed. So glad I picked this place. There were several that I had to pick from and my first instinct was because of the name of the optometrist. Then I went to my appointment and was very happy to see a young optometrist who was attentive, very professional, knowledgeable and very careful about checking the condition of my eyes. She explained really well the present condition of eyes specially my cataract. She also showed me right then what my eye prescription would look like. I was very happy with the result. I came here because my Aunt got her LASIK done with him and the reviews on here seem to say that he is the "BEST" out there, despite his lack of bedside manner. I didn't care if he had bedside manner or not, it was my EYES I was getting surgery with and I want to make sure I don't become blind from this procedure and get it done by the "BEST." What I was concerned with was that I'm 22 and I asked the optometrist if I am too young to get this procedure done. He told me that because I'm still young, that they will try to overcorrect my eyes so that if it still does change that it would still be 20/20 vision until I'm 25. However, here are some of the problems: 1) It's been about 6 months since I got my LASIK done, and I still receive some halo in my eyes. This means I have some astigmatism, when I didn't before! 2) My vision is about 20/20 or 25/25, where I know I could see better when I had contacts on (probably 18/20). So the optometrist lied! I'm not sure if it was worth spending 4k to have vision that was worst than what you had with contacts. Yes, it is very convenient that I do not have to deal with putting on and taking off contacts and buying solution anymore, but you still have to put drops of Restasis every morning and night that is expensive (an additional $85). PLUS using refresh tear drops about every hour so your eyes don't dry out. It's up to you if you want to spend 3 to 4 thousand dollars on getting surgery, but I say if you are fine with your contacts/glasses, just stick with it because your vision without them would probably not be as clear as they were with them. Like I said, it is very convenient to be contact/glasses-free, but with the complications I faced and comparing to my vision before, I would have been fine without the surgery. read more

Yesterday I had the PRK procedure. My eyes weren't suitable for lasik, so PRK was the alternative. Dr Patel and the staff there are really fantastic! I saw another optomitrist there, who did the eye measurements prior to the procedure. He was very patient, answering all my questions. Dr Patel came and talked to me before hand and then during the procedure he explained each step before it would happen, so I knew exactly what was happening. The whole team are so patient, friendly, and professional. They really care about the patient, there was no rushed feeling at all, and no one asked me to give them a review or spread the word on their business, which seems rare these days. I booked my eye appointment here for my husband and I via ZocDocs. This was a much better experience than the previous year at some place in Albany (which kept us waiting for much too long). I booked / confirmed everything online which is perfect, but the doctor listed on ZocDocs is not the one we ended up meeting with. Both of us met with Dr. Anney Han and she was great. Friendly and professional and also a Cal grad. Go Bears! It was a standard appointment for me - eye exam, contact fitting and dilation. The staff was friendly and professional, the offices clean. They have a small parking lot out back and this location is very convenient for us so I will likely come back again next year. I'm still waiting for them to mail me my detailed receipt so I can claim the expense with my HSA (not sure why I couldn't be provided at the time), so hopefully I will receive that in the next week or so. HSA reimbursement expenses are always a pain. read more

I went in and saw Dr. Rodriquez. He's was very attentive, personable and thorough explaining everything along the way. I wanted give Negative Rating but unfortunately its not an option. I had Blurry Vision and looking for ophthalmologist and found this turner eye Institute on yelp and call them and got early appointment. Dr. Rodriguez checked my eye and said there is some water bubble in eye. that's why i have this vision and it will go away in few weeks. He was considering Glaucoma things and looking in that direction. Did't even see the elephant in the room. After 3 days my vision is gone completely and I can't see anything. so i rushed to some other hospital emergency and another ophthalmologist checked my eye said you need surgery right now. your retina is detached. why you didn't come early when you have Blurry Vision ? If you have delayed 1 more day and your retina is detached completely then you might have lost your vision permanently. They referred my retina specialist and they did my surgery and i got my vision back after few weeks. read more

I actually read all the reviews before I went into their office for a free consultation. I was a bit skeptical about some reviews. I had my Lasik done by Dr. Turner this past Monday and I was/am very happy about the result. I had the custom wavefront Lasik done and I don't have any blurriness when looking at lights/lamps at night. At my 1 day after sugery appointment, I was 20/20! And I do not feel that my eyes were not dry. Of course I still followed all the eye drops instructions. There was some "nerves/lightning" pain for about 1.5 days. Once I put Systane drops, the pain went away. Tomorrow will be one week after surgery and I am still feeling very good. I can see very clearly during the day time and also at night. The office staff was very friendly before I even decided to go with them with my surgery. The day of free consultation, the day of surgery and the day after surgery, everybody was very friendly. Sylvia explained everything very thoroughly to me and gave me a lot of free samples of Systane eye drops and wipes. Erica was very thorough with my eye exam the day after surgery before Dr. Turner came in. Yes, Dr. Turner is a very serious doctor. I actually love his professionalism. His hands are SO steady. Once he was done with checking my eyes at the free consultation day, I knew I picked the right doctor. He was so steady at the laser center when he did my surgery. The day after the surgery, he was very professional too and knew his stuff. Honestly I rather have my Lasik done by a serious professional doctor who knows his stuff and has very steady hands than a chit-chatty doctor who chat with me the whole time. Had Lasik 20 yrs ago and now I need to revisit as the 20 years of getting older has had it's impact on my vision. I went back to check on refresh or possible cataract work. 1) they no longer take VSP - but will honor discount - maybe $200 2) they don't keep records past 7 years - and did not tell me prior to my driving 1 hour just to go back to that office cause they did the original work 3) my insurance wont cover the cataract - cause they are not bad enough - me paying 100% doesn't work 4) in doctor's view not worth having refresh cause he cannot say if cataract will accelerate and make refresh not worth it - I should wait until the cataract is bad enough to get done - 5) one eye's vision is 20/200 - WHAT HAPPENED TO QUALITY OF LIFE TURNER??!! I am supposed to have inferior life because ... I should WAIT? I will research further - definitely not good patient considerations going on at Turner Eye Institute. read more

My experience with Dr. Patel has been impeccable. My fears of medical procedures and doctors in general have lessened due to the level of expertise, communication, and knowledge as a patient at Turner Eye Institute. Today, Dr. Patel performed an eye procedure flushing out my tear ducks, before I could see the intimidating medical equipment he was going to use he re-assured me not to worry and was very gentle. The procedure was very successful and my annoying symptoms immediately improved. I was originally Dr. Turners patient who, according to many of the local seniors had built an amazing reputation. Back in July 2020, I was a little hesitant to even come to my consultation appointment, especially with COVID-19, an elective procedure like this can definitely wait. The staff at Turner Eye Institute were very welcoming and their COVID practices for disinfecting were great. Chairs are constantly wiped down, equipment is disinfectant before and after each patient, you can just see the care and attention to detail. I met a few doctors who ran some testing then finally met with Dr. Patel who explained that he would be the one to do the LASIK procedure. He took the time to answer all of my questions and explained everything so thoroughly, it made me feel comfortable with moving forward, even with the health crisis. Then I met with Susie, the patient coordinator/office manager. It felt like we were best friends right off the bat. Such a warm and welcoming person. I scheduled my procedure for mid-August at the Concord location, so I'll post my procedure review there. But this office definitely deserves 5-stars. I've had glasses for several decades, so I finally made up my mind to pursue LASIK treatment. Although a little out of the way, I did the research and was impressed with Turner Eye Institute and Dr. Patel. After my initial consultation, I was given a preparatory regimen which I followed to the "T". The consultation specialist informed me of what to expect with the operation, potential side effects, and post-op activities. On the day of the surgery, I felt that I was in expert hands. The entire process went smoothly. I followed the post-op instructions and now, one month later, I'm still going strong. This has been one of the best decisions I've made and I can't speak highly enough of the process and Dr. Patel and his team. PRO: No more glasses! Excellent vision. Positive life outcome. Throughout the operation, everyone checked on me and answered my questions. I felt safe and cared for. CONS: The procedure can be unnerving to some. Talk to your LASIK counselor and ask many questions. This procedure isn't the best choice for everyone. The procedure is pricey. I used CareCredit, which will allow me to pay over 2 years, similar to a car payment. You MUST follow all instructions (pre and post op) in order to ensure a successful operation. read more

Before surgery I was almost minus 11.0 in both eyes. I did not have many choices on the frame styles I could use with my super high prescription, and I always had to pay premium for the thinner lens material. The staff was so helpful in scheduling my visits before the surgery and I was so excited to hear that I was going to end up with a new prescription around minus 2.0 in both eyes. I ended up with minus 1.5! Dr. Patel has a very calming voice and both he and his assistant kept me informed of what was coming next so I wouldn't be surprised and panic.
