I had a really disappointing experience with Battle Axe in San Luis Obispo. I was overcharged $30 and have been trying to get it resolved for weeks. I first called and was told to email, but never received a response. I followed up with another email--still nothing. When I called again, the manager said he would call me back within an hour and a half, but I never heard back. At this point, I'm out $30 with zero communication or accountability from the business. I had a fun time at Battle Axe overall, but there are definitely a few things holding this place back from being a 5-star experience. The throwing lanes are a bit on the short side, but honestly, that didn't really affect the experience much. The real issue is the condition of the axes. They're in serious need of sharpening--many are visibly chipped, which makes it really hard to get them to stick in the target. Because of that, everyone ends up throwing harder just to get the axe to land, instead of being able to focus on technique or finesse. This leads to more frequent bounce-backs, and when those misses happen, the axes come back faster and farther than they should. It's not just frustrating--it's a potential safety concern. With proper maintenance on the equipment, this could easily be a 5-star spot. The concept is great, the setup is fine, but the dull, damaged axes drag the whole experience down. The first time I went ax throwing was in Toronto a while back which was a blast! This time around in this location was fun too. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Location in downtown SLO is great so it easy to grab a drink or food after. Similar to golf, I realized that over thinking your technique makes it harder. You are better off practising and going with what feels comfortable to you. It might be Covid related but they only had water and no food. read more

I was a little bit intimidated to participate in Axe throwing. Entering the venue you hear and see axes flying. But, once I got started it was great. I wanted to keep beating my last toss. I wasn't sure what to expect by my visit to Battle Axe. I'm super uncoordinated (to say the very least) and I didn't think I'd be into swinging an axe around. I can honestly say I had a good time. The staff were super patient and helpful until I found my "technique." Since it was just the hubby and I, 30 minutes was perfect. I can't for sure say that I'd do it again, but it was fun to get out of my comfort zone for a bit. read more

This place is a great concept! Located downtown you will find a fun and engaging spot sure to thrill both young and old. The employees are very thorough with the safety instructions and are super helpful in teaching you techniques with the various axes to help get you on the board. Axe throwing actually requires a bit of skill and technique, so it was great having them help us figure out which axe would be the right fit for us and what throw (one or two handed) would be the best. I think the pricing is a little high- this is something that I would do more often if the price was a little more reasonable. read more

It appears the business is still it the beginning stages of opening but all the basics are there. Axes and targets!!! Staff are super friendly, throughly explain rules and offer their assistance to improve your technique. There are several throwing lanes and you purchase time increments. Warning.....time goes by VERY FAST so start throwing before your time runs out. Throwing does take some technique. The environment is safe and it's just a fun atmosphere. Was in SLO for market day and discovered the Battle Axe. I didn't even know they had one. We just walked in and put our name on the list. If you can reserve, I suggest to do so. We paid for 1hr and was there perfect timing for two people. They give a great military discount and the girls in there were awesome. They do give you some pointers then start your paid time. This battle axe was so much fun. I suggest wearing comfortable shoes. My feet were not prepared but then again I was walking around all over downtown SLO. Such a good stress relief as well. Give it a try if you haven't done one of these. I'm glad I did and will definitely be back again for some stress relief fun! read more

Axe throwing sounds kinda dangerous, right? Well it certainly is a risky activity when you're doing it at Battle Axe SLO, where all the employees are unmasked during the state's largest surge of the whole pandemic and at least one of them is unvaccinated (hard not assume they're all anti-vax here). I didn't notice no one was wearing a mask until after paying for 30 minutes of throwing, and after hearing an employee talking about refusing to get the vaccine shortly after, I almost just left. Figured I'd already given them my money and chose to trust my vaccines, booster, and mask, but definitely wouldn't have gone if I had that information ahead of time. The people working there were nice and helpful and the axe throwing was fun, so go for it if you're not concerned about their disregard for public health measures and don't mind supporting a business like that. read more

Before reading this i will say i will go back here and give them more of my dollars. Went with the fam it was very fun but this place has some major issues that need to be addressed. If you wanna go throw some axes with friends id recommend it- great location good food all around and although they don't sell drinks (cause axes) they do have snacks and drinks which is a nice touch if you are thirsty or want a snack. Major issue- 5 people worked there and only one was legally old enough to. I don't mind a 15 year old explaining to me how to throw an axe but if he mumbles through it unenthusiastically i learn nothing. Which honestly is a safety hazard- there are rules we did not get the gist of at all because he mumbled through the entire thing and it is very loud in there. The rest of our interaction with employees was 50/50. The one employee who was obviously over 18 gave great tips and was helpful. The other 3 girls who were definitely in junior high and high school gave bad advice- chastised us over a very silly thing and left much to be wanted as far as service. And its not their age- they just need to be actually trained and they will be great at it. As far as the chastised thing goes. They have 2 lines you stand between when throwing- you don't pass the danger line because flying axes yes. The score board is in the danger zone- and yes it is detachable from the wall for you to score in safety behind the lines. When we took the board off the wall to do that a 12 year old yelled at us repeating over and over "please put that back on the wall" anxiously. We were like sure but wanted to have a dialogue- she won't learn what a dialogue is for like 8 more years I sound like a boomer Seriously though the one employee did know her stuff very well but this place is 3 things, axes, boards, and staff. Boards 5/5 replaced often and spray bottled to help axes stick, axes 3/5 many cheap bent and chipped, employees 1/5 because 1 out of the 5 working was competent. read more

Went here on Christmas Eve. No one on staff wore a mask as they were shouting the rules in our face. No sanitation efforts to clean the axes in between parties. As you are playing, the party next to you can grab from the same box of axes, the same water bottle. I realize it might be an extra step to clean with minimal benefit, but I appreciate businesses that make the effort. Axe Battle was an awesome place for my daughter to celebrate her 20th birthday. My daughter is a Cal Poly student and we wanted her to have a fun place to celebrate with her friends. I called ahead to take my cousin and his pregnant partner from the UK for the last half hour, while it was pouring rain and previously on the phone at 8:10 I was told to just come in . We drove from oceano and got there still with time for the 30 minute session and I walked in and was told they weren't taking any parties after 8:15. Being turned away at the door after braving the rain and calling ahead was not a great experience, and is something someone on the later shift should mention when people call about booking ahead.
