Great, characterful coffee shop. Has a very energetic atmosphere and grungy arty vibe. Latte's are good and aren't burnt. I can't speak for the food in the back yet. As for the "grumpy baristas" I see on here and overhear people talk about, it's better than the fake friendliness you find most places. I think if I tripped and fell on my face they'd help me and that's what matters. The first time they didn't speak to me and I thought I did something wrong and didn't know the transaction was even over, but then after a few more times I realized that's just how they are and now I appreciate it. I've worked in retail and hate having to be fake nice so it's refreshing to have the grumpy baristas honestly. And then when they are nice to you it is very refreshing. read more

The people working here are super nice and accommodating. I went in on my last birthday to get a "Pimosa" (PBR & Orange juice). Unfortunately they were out of BOTH. Instead of turning me away, disappointed, one of the baristas offered me some alternatives. I ended up with a Tecate with mango juice. Still delicious. It's this kind of customer service that I really appreciate. She could have easily said, "No, we don't have the stuff to make one." But she went out of her way to make an alternative. You'll immediately love this chilled out little coffee joint. First impression of this place is that it is filled with strange furniture that you might have found in a 70s yard sale. The decor is rather random and interesting, with local art for sale on the walls. It's got a very relaxed group of twenty and thirty somethings that crowd the gardens and patios out front. No worries, they are not so hipster that you'll feel their burning eyes because they are regulated by the battle cat. The coffee is strong and very tasty. It ordered some rich dark blend that kicked my tongue back and slapped my senses into a caffeine high; it was exactly what I came for and what I expected. I also got a bagel with cream cheese that was super fresh and soft. I wished I had ordered what the locals were eating because they were sandwiches made with waffle for bread -what!?! (that's a positive 'what,' not a weirded out one). Go here, eat the waffle sandwich and heed the battle cat. read more

4 stars really for the too-cool-for-you vibe I was getting. Battle Cat is a pretty hip spot, but we absolutely loved the coffee and art. On our way down to the Smoky Mountains we pulled off the blue ridge parkway and got coffee here. Just iced coffee, nothing special, but it was strong and tasty and exactly what we needed. We liked it so much that we stopped there on our way back east. This time I got a hot Hojjicha tea, which was delicious and served in a tea bag. If we had more time I would have loved to hang out on their porch. It has a rustic garden vibe. And this art inside is really cool. Totally recommend this spot to anyone in the Asheville Area. read more

The coffee was good and the muffins were very tasty. The staff was friendly enough but I don't think we had the requisite number of tattoos or gauges to fit in here. I made sure to sit on a non-porous surface, as most of the furniture looked like it had been sourced from yard sales and frat houses. Most important to note, however, is that the patrons that Battle Cat apparently attracts are people with no moral compass who will hit your rental car when pulling out of the parking lot and not leave a note with their information. read more

Thank you for opening me up to this great idea, which I will be implementing in my daily life more often. I wish that I could report that I had a good experience at Battle Cat, but it was barely mediocre. The space was dingy and looked unkept and dirty, the employees were rude, and the bathrooms were a mess. Luckily, the Americano I ordered was one of the best I've had. Most expensive cup of coffee I've had in West Asheville and it wasn't nearly as delicious as the roasters down the road. The staff seemed to pride themselves on being rude and acted peeved to be doing customer service, which is an obviously essential part of the service industry! After my first visit I wanted nothing more to do with the place. My friend was also offended by the staff but decided to give them another chance and experienced the same attitudes the second time around. I doubt either of us will be returning. There are a handful of much more accommodating cafés along Haywood Road, I do not recommend spending time or money on this one. read more

We were visiting Asheville about a month ago and were told to check this place out. The coffee was so good! Unfortunately there was extremely lude and grotesque artwork on the walls. It was WAYY too much for a place where children are allowed to come inside. It was over a month ago and to this day I feel gross thinking about it. It also felt really dirty in there. There was a weird smell. Definitely not my vibe. This place is marketing to a certain crowd, and I am not one of them. If that stuff doesn't bother you then you might like it! But honestly I can't get past the unrated wall art. There were young teens in there when I was there. I can't imagine ever taking my teenage nephew in there, like ever. read more

when you were in college was there an old house where some friends (or you) lived and everyone hung out. Old couches and chairs, whatever on the wall, well lived-in and comfy. The outside patio is welcoming and comfortable. Battle Cat is a great representation of Asheville. The vibe of the decor is warm and inviting, yet interesting enough to have a 30 minute conversation on. The coffee and tea are wonderful! The staff there are great and make great recommendations. I would recommend the Mexican Coffee. They have a yummy variety of cookies as well. Seating is available inside and outside, which is awesome for those of us who like to drag our dogs out with us. If you want to get a great coffee, at a great price, and are sick of chain coffee shops, come support this local shop...you won't be disappointed! read more

This is absolutely one of my favorite coffee shops ever. The people that go there seem to be all locals--the progressive, out-there crowd that Asheville is known there--I felt at home. Great coffee, from something simple like a double, triple, or quadruple cappuccinos to crafted drinks like a Thai or Vietnamese-inspired coffees (also blended drinks). The art is great and local; the Wifi is fast. The furniture and decor is little rough around the edges, but , for me, it only makes me feel a bit more like home compared to an antiseptic cookie-cutter Starbucks. If you're looking for something light, they sell great bagels of varying flavors; if you're looking for a meal, there is Tiger Bay Cafe attached to the back of the cafe, which has healthy, delicious food (with vegan options--a must-have for me). And the food and coffee is totally underpriced ($5.5 for a full meal at Tiger Bay; $3.5 for a day's worth of coffee at Battle Cat). This place seems to be designed to keep you there hanging out all day. Great outdoor seating outside (both smoking and non-smoking sections) and places inside to meet with a friend or write your bestseller. read more
