Whenever I visit Asheville I have to go out of my to check out new and different places. So, I take some time to look up places to visit and well, that's how I found Battle Cat Coffee. I know, that's not the most amazing story but... yeah... lol But anyways, with a name like Battle Cat Coffee, I knew I had to check it out. This coffee bar screams Asheville. It's located in an actual neighborhood. In the area there is a lot of graffiti and it's pretty cool. Very artsy. It was a little confusing trying to figure out where to park, but we eventually just parked somewhere. I can't tell where that was that we parked. I'm pretty sure it wasn't where we were supposed to park either lol. It was not really close to the coffee shop... so... Moving on... The outside of the coffee bar is awesome. It's located inside of a house and on the front door they have their awesome brand art, which is a cat holding a knife or switchblade or something like that. Pretty cool. The inside was very down to earth. Nothing pretentious at all. I ordered a latte to go. They were pretty busy, but the coffee came out quick and the staff was super nice. They also had a selection of pastries but I did not order one. They sounded good though. I also liked that their brand logo was on the to go cup. Very cute. Overall I really love this coffee bar and I plan on going back. Highly recommend. read more

Quaint little coffee and bread shop. Adjacent to it, it's a place to order more substantial food. Very much a hipster feel, with its decor, but that should deter no one as the clientele is very eclectic. Had a nice cappuccino. Buy a cool shirt and a sticker while you are there. read more

I was a consistent customer, going several times a week. That was until owner, on several occasions (when they decided to come in and micromanage) The owner has on more than one occasion spent considerable time pateronizing both me and several other customers. All over randomly enforcing upcharges that are not on the menu, seeminly making them up at their discretion. "The owner" has chastised and cursed to their employees several times. Owner does not know how to run a business or even what customer service is. Wish I could give worse stars. I only gave them 2 stars so that people would actually read this review. Two reasons I took off a star. First refill is $1.50. Most shops(the best ones) give one free refill or max of $1 for refill. the other thing(the big one) is there are two business inside the location. As a marketing guy, it's ridicules they do not coordinate. I literally had to go to one counter to order my breakfast sandwich and then to other biz to order coffee. I really wanted to review this place because I read so many negative reviews about the service. I was nervous to visit because so many people have talked about the staff being openly rude to them. This is simply false. I'm not sure what those guys were talking about but I spent 4 hours here and was helped by three different female(?) servers and every single person was kind, warm, and welcoming. They were all smiles. I really appreciated that they offer some alcohol options here as I don't drink coffee and came here to join friends. The wines and beers I had were all reasonably priced. Tiger Bay is in the same building and they offer a variety of sandwiches. One thing to note is that the bathroom door is opened with a passcode and it's easy to forget so make sure you write it down when the servers tell it to you. read more

Great West Asheville location with on street parking, but fantastic covered porch and garden space too enjoy in nice weather and inside seating when the weather isn't quite as cooperative. The interior harkens back to coffee shops of my youth with vintage furniture, local art, and a delightfully graffitied bathroom. Staff here is top notch. Drinks are delicious! And though we didn't try any food items, we'll be happy to return and tick that off our box while we enjoy a little nostalgia. read more

I'm a big fan of Battle Cat. When you walk in, it has this eccentric, very Asheville vibe to it. There is awesomely odd artwork hanging everywhere and the set up is comfortable yet strange with sofas, small tables and chairs and outdoor seating. The energy is high. I'll say that whenever I order their hot coffee, I always think that it tastes like fish but am always satisfied when I order a latte or anything cold. I don't go here often but every time I do, I get a warm, fuzzy and proud-to-be-an-Ashevillian feeling. read more

Well I don't know what to do because I loved Battle Cat it's open early ,it's funky and fun with a good people watching porch. Just now I had a pretty bad experience though, I entered at 7.30 am at a freezing morning in February and wanted to order a quick latte to warm my hands and I had my 14 weeks old puppy with me . When I ordered the guy just told me " the dog can't be here" , uups sorry about that , I really am there is no sign anywhere at the door or whatever , so I can't even pick up a coffee real quick I asked " no he said, the dog has to be outside. Well ok then , sorry again but I think I would have sealed with that situation differently, well others open early also and tons of coffee places are ok with dogs . absolutely incredible baristas, my favorite coffee shop in all of asheville. I always walk in after a treacherous night of debauchery. do the baristas judge? no sir, they just give you delicious coffee and send you on your way. I walked in this morning and to put it lightly, if I were a house, I looked like that dilapidated mansion in Grey Gardens. Ok, this place is the epitomie of Asheville chic-grunge. I love coming here b/c you can get a Buchi (kombucha). It's open until 8pm. You can people watch for hours on their huge outdoor patio, & all are welcome. It's also right across the street from Builders Resource (a huge construction and lumber yard). However, they have a really fun patio. Battlecat has a NYC grunge vibe. Be sure to visit the bathroom, which is priceless. Just don't spend too much time in there. In fact, I took off one star b/c of the bathroom, which doesn't feel "clean" to me. They need to completely renovate it with a new toilet, sink, & new fixtures. The graffiti doesn't bother me, but today, 11/06/18, the toilet would barely flush. You have to hold the handle down. I also like Owl bakery just a couple blocks away (which has a French vibe with marble and high end tile work). So I feel that the two coffee shops can satisfy very different tastes depending upon one's mood. read more

Walking into BattleCat is like having a giant bucket of West Asheville poured over your head. If you don't know West Asheville, Asheville is a little like Berkeley and West Asheville is like having another Berkeley that's even Berkelier right across the French Broad River. I love Asheville (my son lives there so we visit often) and I'm getting to love West Asheville, with places like The Admiral, Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack and BattleCat. I could've walked off campus in 1975 and into BattleCat in 2013 and never missed a beat. (OK, the cell phones might've thrown me.) The front lawn at BattleCat is full of picnic tables covered with a sea of tattoos and dreadlocks. There is a huge covered front porch with seating (de rigueur for Asheville). There are several rooms inside and the pre-requisite chalkboard menu. They serve breakfast, but my son took us there for afternoon coffees, so we'll have to try the food next time. My iced latte was excellent. There are many great coffee shops in Asheville. I have trouble visiting all my favorites since I'm only there for a couple of days at a time, but I've just added another. On the way out, I had to ask the tattooed, dreadlocked barista where the name "BattleCat" came from. She smiled and said, "Oh, its my two bosses. They both love He-Man and Masters of the Universe." While I am not a resident and have only been to Battle Cat once, it was one of my favorite places in Asheville largely due to the sense of community I found there. The staff were incredibly awesome and welcoming. It felt as if I was walking into someone's home. The baristas were very pleasant and enjoyed working with each other, which is something that is often indicative of a good company culture. They were fairly packed when I was there with my wife, but this was not a hindrance as they made our drinks fairly quickly. The drinks themselves were pretty good. I was appreciative that they allowed the taste of the coffee to shine through and it was not clouded by tons of sugar. I plan on going back the next time I am in Asheville. My partner frequented a different coffee shop, but liked the coffee at BC so much he decided to make it his new regular spot (it was also more affordable). He's a MAINSTREAM professional down the street and has come in dressed in a suit and tie because it is required of him. So maybe his values don't align... don't get me started... I can't tell you how many times he's come home complaining about the service, as well as not unlocking the doors when they're supposed to be open... thus making him late for work. All are welcome? Are they, though? The one (and only) latte I had was mediocre, and they got pissed because I wanted it to-go. I'm all about saving the planet too, but I had stuff to do (and I recycled the cup).
