I walked into DJ's around 12:30 on a Tuesday to sell some cards. About an hour later, I walked out very happy with the way I was treated. The store was pretty crowded with a constant stream of shoppers. I dealt with Richard, and he reminded me of a high energy mad scientist -bouncing from customer to customer, then to the phone, then consulting with his colleagues, then peering at his laptop, then consulting some pricing magazines, then holding my cards up to a light to check for hidden pinholes or subterranean cracks and wrinkles. When he was ready to make me an offer on a Kobe Bryant, and baseball cards from the 1950s and 1970s, he made me a terrific offer which I accepted. I learned that Richard is a bit of a humanitarian and community service guy, as he donates hundreds of bags of cards to local children for things like graduation and report card excellence. I could not have been happier with my trip to DJs.

A place for me. Remember the address? Think of Modern Method Records! When I lived in Natick, I went to this store due to proximity; but whilst in university I frequented The Garage almost daily. Slowly in the 1990s vinyl succumbed to CD. The offerings became less and less. Japanese anime, clothing, and plastic bobble heads became the norm. Virgin and Tower also died a slow cancerous death. Newbury, is like an old friend. Meh. Still a decent store, the spirit is still there even though the Do It Yourself flavor, feeling, and attitude of Let Them Eat Jellybeans is not.

Rubber Chicken Comics perfectly straddles the middle ground of those 2 examples. There are loads of boxes with .50 cent comics, $1.00 comics & $5 comics that are regularly refilled and always have people digging through them. They also have an amazing selection of gently used $5 graphic novels. Besides the boxes that all deserve time to dig though they have a clearly marked and organized section of new weekly comics, a wall of recent back issues for on going series and organized bins of older back issues. Somehow this shop also gets the best "wall books" in the area! From huge key books to rare variants, complete sets to signed books, original art sketch covers to golden age back issues. The wall is ever changing with assorted rarities at amazing prices. In addition to the comics they also have action figures (new and old), statues, vintage toys and games and other assorted collectibles. They offer weekly subscription pull list service and allow you to change on a monthly basis and give a 10-20-% discount based on the number of books on your pull list. They have bags, boards, boxes and other supplies as well. I can't recommend this shop enough there is always a great conversation or debate going on and everyone is welcome from the most seasoned collector to the newest comic fan. I proceeded to pick up a lot of psyduck cards as he is my favorite Pokemon. I also grabbed a lot of cubone because I wanted to make a full page of him in my binder. I asked the store owner how much is each vintage card and he said I don't know. How about 25 cents each. I grabbed the rest of the cards I wanted it was 30 cards in total he then looked up every single card at the register and told me 20 dollars for the whole lot I was expecting 7 or 8 dollars. Overall a terrible and sketchy business strategy to tell someone a price only to change it at the register. I proceded to look up the card online myself and most of them are going for less than 25 cents each. I would not recommend going to this store at all.
