Everything was a bit pricier than you might find elsewhere but it comes down to if you want to support small bakers doing things the traditional way and/or want the effects of long-fermented breads. The rustic loaf was decent, if a little gummy. The brotchen, though, was fantastic and I would gladly buy a bag of those to eat with some cheese and good butter for a lighter meal. I'm not often in the area but would love to stop in again and see what's on the ever-changing, seasonal menu.

This is a family business that started in the home kitchen. It is run by a woman who has a love for baking. With that in mind, I expected homestyle pastries, and that's what they provided. My wife and I tried 4 pastries. 1) Walnut Toffee Bar It had moderate sweetness, a light toffee flavor, and moderate walnut flavor. The bottom layer was a slightly sweet cookie type base that was moist and slightly chewy. It was topped with walnuts and toffee. More toffee flavor was needed, but this is great for lovers of walnuts. 2) Gooey Chewie Bar This was definitely gooey from lots of caramel in a chewy fudge like bar. It wasn't overly sweet. It had some pieces of nuts in it. The crisp crust on top was slightly sweet and had great texture. It was a simple dessert that was made well. 3) Blueberry Crumble It had a flaky croissant like pastry shell filled on top with blueberry jam and cream cheese. It looked like a danish. The cream cheese was smooth and light with a natural flavor. It was not sweet. Sweetness came from the blueberry jam. It had a good sweet fruit flavor that contrasted nicely with the slightly tangy cream cheese. The pastry shell was well-made. The exterior was flaky and crisp while the interior was light, airy, and slightly chewy. This dessert doesn't look pretty, but the flavors were well-matched and satisfying. 4) Cinnamon Roll with spiced cream cheese frosting The spices in the cream cheese were cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. The spices were subtle tasting, but there was enough to give the frosting flavor a hint of spiciness. The roll was soft, moist, and slightly tacky between the layers where the cinnamon was located. The spicy cinnamon was balanced with sweetness from the frosting and roll. Overall, the taste and texture were excellent. The service was helpful, polite, and quick. The store was very clean. They don't have restrooms, tables, or chairs for customers. They have cakes, slices of cake, cupcakes, muffins, quiches, brownies, scones, cookies, coffee, tea, and bottled water. Everything was reasonably priced. The pastries and cookies were not fancy or unique. There was no pastry chef level of presentations here. Everything looked homemade. The food here brings warm feelings of home cooking. They're a good place for comfort food.

I always call in an order so my pie is hot and fresh when I pickup. There are also pies on the counter for sale but if you want a specific guaranteed flavor just phone in your order. The blueberry crumb pie is so delicious, the crumbs are sweet with a KH or crunch. The blueberries ooze with blueberries. I also picked up some Nalls cookies. Fresh baked bread is on the rack when you walk in with many choices of breads (so many sourdough offerings ) and other baked goods such as cinnamon rolls, scones, shortbread, coconut macaroons, pepperoni rolls, etc. We arrived around noon on a Saturday and had plenty of choices. I was interested in their basic sourdough - two sizes available. The smaller ones were still too warm to slice, so I opted for the larger loaf. It's deceiving just how large this loaf is when it's on the rack, but sliced and bagged it was almost the length of my arm! And very reasonably prized at $13. They come in a freezer bag too! I also learned pepperoni rolls are one of the WV state food and this establishment won best pepperoni roll 4 times, so we tried those as well. So very good - it was a pretzel roll with prepperoni inside. We were lucky enough to get 2 or their 4 remaining cinnamon rolls. The lady helping us said they are worth every calorie and she was not exaggerating one bit! We took a bite of them in the parking lot before we left and I walked back in for the last two to take home and freeze. (Sorry for those after me!). They also offer local and delicious sounding jams, cheese, cheese, milks, and some little trays of cheese that would be perfect for an impromptu picnic with one of their pull apart baguettes. They also offer beverages in a cooler case. Super friendly team working there with absolutely high quality and delicious items. Definitely check them out if you visit Harper's Ferry or surrounding areas. I'm sure anyone local also knows how special this place is. Next time I'm back in that area, I'll definitely work Bolivar Bread Bakery into my plans! (There is some (limited) street parking out front and a small parking lot in the back of the building.)
