Bakery so good, I'm writing a review when I live 2,200 miles away. Truly world class baked goods prepared daily/ hourly and just drool worthy. I went in for the club sandwich and came back the next day to sample more. Their French onion pizza out of this world. AND Red velvet peasant bread, also an absolute jaw dropper. Cookies and croissants so fresh they made the whole travel home which my husband echoed my sentiments. Ambient back patio and the hallway leading to gives you a great glimpse into the baking behind the scene. Wonderful staff and service and they seem to know their regulars. Wishing I lived closer. We have been eyeing up this place for about a year now. We usually grab pizza from Pizzoco up the road from here, but decided to give this spot a go! The service is amazingly friendly and pretty fast. We stopped in around 2pm on a Friday, so I'm betting morning hours are a bit crazier. We got a cinnamon roll, strawberry/raspberry danish, cherry danish and cannoli for the pastries. My husband got a slice of their pizza as well and their drip coffee. The coffee was surprisingly good! The pizza sadly was mistakenly switched with another patron's piece (they take it back to the kitchen and heat it up for you). The piece my husband was given was laced with onions; something he never would have ordered. Oh well. They also don't put their pizza options on the chalkboard which I think needs to change. We didn't see that there was a pepperoni kind until we already ordered! The danishes were both very good, but I think they need to change the bread that they are baked on. It's way too dense. But the flavor was outstanding! The cinnamon roll was also very good. The cannoli kind of missed the mark for me. Overall, worth a visit and I think some minor tweaks could go a long way! read more

This bakery is just off the historic arcade in downtown Winchester. It is open on Sundays to a reasonable hour, which is why I stopped in. Their selection was slanted towards non-vegetarian items such that only a couple of their pizza slices were an option for me, and did not have quite as diverse a set of sweets as I'd hoped for. Having said that, the quality was there, so I took a shot on a large focaccia pizza slice with multiple peppers. It was very bready but bubbled nicely and I was able to make a good small meal out of a single slice. The sourdough bread that I got was available sliced, and was mild but satisfying in flavor and texture. It was a pleasant shop to eat in and had an outdoor courtyard. What an absolute gem! I visited when they first opened & was greeted by friendly staff and tray after tray of baked goods, I really had a hard time making a selection, everything looked so amazing! Went for the chicken apple-sage sausage Kolache, chocolate chip scone, a specialty cookie with oatmeal, cranberries, blueberries, & golden raisins, and finally 2 drip coffee (dark roast) to go. All items were solid, but the star was the scone- WOW! Mine had a crisp rugged crown with a subtle glaze, moist interior, & a well distributed chip ratio. I was looking for good bread near Winchester, VA. A Google search pointed me to Knead. Here's the thing -- this isn't just good bread in Winchester. This is good bread on an absolute scale. Rustic loaves with toothsome grain. And scones. And cookies. A breakfast sandwich to die for (on ciabatta, no less). And the coffee is what coffee *should* be. Exquisite food, really. A few loves in my life; my family, dogs, quality coffee, visiting new places (especially cities), alleyways, murals, bookstores, a good thrift find, and of course bread. When I say bread I speak of that baked dough in all its glorious forms; pizza, croissants, scones, biscuits, calzones, kolaches, doughnuts, sourdough, bagels, potato bread, banana bread...okay I've made my point. Every meal, every day, every way. That is my obsession with bread. You have to admit there is no aroma so alluring and welcoming and calming as that of fresh baked bread. And thus a personal mission, upon moving to Virginia, was to find a bakery with a swiftness. It did not take long. Knead Bread is close to home (which is dangerous) and located in Old Town (even more dangerous considering the amount of time I spend there). Anything and everything they create is delicious, but I will give one example. I am a ardent supporter (and consumer) of oatmeal cookies. Soft, filling, and subtle. I saw they had a specialty cookie, a oatmeal golden raisin. I came in and asked, "how soft is your oatmeal cookie?" The team member behind the counter picked one up and almost folded it in half, without it breaking. I was convinced! That is the level of quality you'll find in their danishes, tarts, and so much more. If you're near Old Town, and even if you aren't, stop by. Order at least three very different items. And be prepared to eat them all before you ever get home. This is not a time for sharing. read more

We found this place during a weekend visit to Winchester. It is a cute little bakery in the Old Town. The staff takes great pride in their service and their product. Walking around old town for the first time in years and stumbled on this cute bakery. I can't resist local, small business bakeries so had to stop in. I immediately knew I'd made a (delicious) mistake and would be leaving with far more than I'd planted on. The cashier, baker, and owner were all some of the nicest people you'll ever meet and very helpful. They had a number of delicious sounding sandwiches but we went with some autumnally spiced biscotti, anise shortbread, and a couple slabs of focaccia. The focaccia is fantastically soft, not too oily, and loaded with flavorful toppings. I love a good "snacking" focaccia, versus the kind for sandwich bread, and this fits the bill. I had some with soup for dinner. The price may seem high but you get 2 meals out of it, at least. I love anise and anything licorice. The cookies delivered in their name and were very well spiced. The sweet glaze added a good balance to the buttery cookie and sharp spice. The "spiced" biscotti are the perfect coffee or chai dunker. Really well seasoned. They're a bit hard so really benefit from a dip in a coffee, cappuccino, or tea. I have a new "must stop" place when in Winchester. Love supporting small businesses. This is such a cute place that I WANT to like it. It was never quite up to European standards, and the coffee products, while drinkable, were never great, but something has changed. A new pastry chef maybe? Danishes, which should be flakey and light, look like dense focaccia. Based on how they are all squares, they are likely being rolled out on a pan and cut into slices. Their texture is all wrong. The cinnamon rolls have an equally dens, not light or fluffy texture. The quality has gone downhill. There's nothing 'pastry' about their pastries; they're all just very dense bread. read more

Just went to Winchester to go walking the town and dropped in this amazing bakery/cafe. So many amazing and eccentric options it is hard to choose. Never had an orange cranberry scone with ham, bacon, mozz and a honey drizzle. Never would've thought of that. But, I love it! My wife is having the cinnamon roll with ham, bacon, mozz and a honey drizzle. These are NOT the corporate kind of stuff that's shipped in ready-made and topped with deli-meat kind of ham and bacon-sprinkles. This IS all in-house It is also a little taste of heaven. Absolutely delicious bread. They also have huge cinnamon buns slathered in cream cheese frosting. My son has a dairy allergy, so we're always looking for dairy-free options. For the most part, their breads are dairy free. They also make a delicious hot chocolate with oat milk so we enjoyed a dairy-free hot chocolate yesterday when we visited. Fantastic service and really delicious goodies! My brother and I are out of state and we needed to send a gift delivery to our dad who was in the hospital in Winchester. The bakery's website looked really inviting and when we called, they were a joy to speak with and work with. They really gave the gift the personal touch and delivery was perfect! They sent us photos of the goodies and of our dad's happy face when he received the cookies and cinnamon rolls. My friend and I stopped in here to check out what they had to offer. As soon as we walked in the door, there was an aroma of fresh bread and baked goods! They had an area featuring all of their breads - various types and sizes of sourdough, focaccia, and ciabatta, to name a few. Then, they had a case full of baked goods- cinnamon rolls, danishes, muffins, and a handful of cookies. While we were there, they brought out a tray of cinnamon twists and a freshly baked pizza, sliced and ready to be served. They had a small handwritten menu with instructions on how to build your own breakfast sandwich. In addition, they had a small menu with a list of lunch options. Finally, they had a fresh drip coffee with a local coffee offering and various hot teas. The employee behind the counter was kind enough to answer any questions we had. After much debate, my friend and I decided to each take a small loaf of rosemary sourdough home. If you pay in cash, you receive a small discount! All in all, this was a fun bakery find.
