This is such a lovely and picturesque country store. The store has a great deli with excellent quality meats and cheeses serving excellent salads and sandwiches. Huge wine selection that actually had a tasting when we stopped by on a Saturday. Great selection of cheeses, homemade soups and sauces and gifts. Coffee is excellent as well, they have oak milk! Friendly staff got food out quickly despite the very busy store and line. Even helped with directions and gave us some area information. Lots of good spots to site outside the store or across the street at a little park. Awesome back patio for drinks and very clean bathrooms. Pricing reflects the swarm of X5's Range Rovers, Q7's that congregate in the parking lot. This place is awesome will be back. read more

Stopped at this little specialty shop for lunch on our way to a bed&breakfast in the Blue Ridge. It was a little bit confusing because they take the order at the counter, then you can shop (wine, cheeses, crackers, drinks, etc.), then they call your name, then you pay, then you take your food to a table in the Buttery or on their front porch. I ordered a turkey club, tomato gazpacho, and a cookie. My husband ordered a breakfast sandwich. The food was amazing. It is a super slow, chill, calm vibe. We will be back! read more

Seemed to be a good store initially although expensive. But their customer service needs help. Additionally, be aware they DON'T allow dogs - they don't put up a sign to indicate this and seem to have only one staff member who cares, as no one said anything until I had been in the store for 10 mins. I had a small animal, who was just standing beside me and acting great. It put a bad spin on the whole experience, and what could have been a really nice day. Does the owner get off telling people to leave their store? Because why would you not put a sign? This is insane to me, as the restaurant we just came from was very dog friendly. One of my Mom's friends is related to the folks that run the Locke Store in Millwood, VA. Mom wanted me to go with her to check the place out with her and her friend - so today off we went. It's a quaint, very old store. The current owners offer a variety of delicious meals - based on locally produced food, as well as wines, beers, other beverages, dressings, vinegars, sauces, cheeses, coffee, and more. I ordered a slice of the savory tart, got a cup of coffee, a bottle of water, and a small bag of the Route 11 Habanero potato chips. We sat outside on the porch to eat our food (there is no seating inside). I should note that beer and wine is to go - you can't drink beer and wine on the premises, including the porch. We saw the website for this place and read their online menus (which it appears they update daily) and really were interested in giving it a try. We drive from Stafford to get there, just over an hour. It was a BEAUTIFUL drive and the little village of Millwood, VA it picturesque! We got there around 2:30PM and some of the great items we saw on the daily menu were already all gone by then, but we gave some other items a try and REALLY enjoyed them! The freshness of the food, the obviously fresh and local veggies and the presentation and care in preparing the food made for a great dining experience. They have picnic tables outside if you want to eat there. You can also get the food to go. But what we did was go across the street to the BEAUTIFUL old mill, the Burwell Mill and there were several picnic tables there, right along a rapidly running, babbling brook and we ate there while listening to the water flowing and seeing the mill's waterfall in the distance - it was beautiful! We enjoyed it so much, we went back and bought a couple of their homemade cookies for dessert, they were AMAZING as well! Definitely worth a visit!! read more

NOT DOG FRIENDLY. I have been to the Locke Store numerous times to pick up a sandwich or some local wine. I've seen large dogs walking in the store previously and the store labels itself as "dog friendly" online on Bring Fido. However, today I was turned away from entering the store before I even set foot inside because I was holding my small dog in my arms. I am quite disappointed with this unequal treatment and I will not be patronizing in the future. read more

This store offers delicious homemade deli counter eats, an incredibly well curated wine and beer selection, delicious local cheeses and meats, and a friendly staff and owner. It's in a scenic and super cute location right across from the Mill and its little park. There are plenty of picnic tables right outside of the store or in the park across the street to enjoy your lunch. I was unfortunately very disappointed with Locke's. Not because the food is terrible. It's better than average actually--or at least, it has potential to be great. More problematic is the fact that they seem to pay zero attention to the experience of the customer choosing, ordering, and then eating a meal here. Put simply: They do food okay, but they are impressively, outstandingly bad at hospitality. I've been to Locke's twice. The first time I had a decent but definitely not amazing chicken lentil soup with a very dry (read: old) slice of sourdough bread that I wished I'd not had, followed by a good but also not amazing cookie. The second time I had the much-raved-about-on-Yelp chicken pot pie, the also-much-raved-about-on-Yelp bacon cheddar biscuits, and an oreo brownie. The chicken pot pie was very disappointing: The sauce split upon heating, which made it look curdled, which was gross, and the vegetables were of dramatically different sizes, some of them in huge chunks that made for quite unpleasant eating. The bacon cheddar biscuit was flavorful but very dry and crumbly, rather than moist and tender. The oreo brownie was okay, but the proportion of oreo topping to brownie was quite off, and it was so tall that it was difficult to eat. Worst of all, this place does not list its prices. You have to ask for them. I asked why, and they said it's because they change often. When that's the case, it's customary to simply write the menu on a chalkboard rather than print it so that it can be changed frequently. In fact, their menu is already on a chalkboard--they still choose not to write the prices. If I were a little more cynical, I'd suspect dishonesty there. I'm sure some customers do. In any case, it definitely makes for awkward ordering, given most Americans "of a certain class" aren't comfortable asking how much things cost, as it implies they are not in fact as high-class as they like to think. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Locke's is relying upon: You will be too shy to ask and so simply order and suffer the sticker shock. And you WILL have sticker shock--only at the cash register, because again, there are no stickers--especially when you see how incredibly little you get for your money. I was told today that the chicken pot pie is sold by the pound (that just seems absurd) and that a "normal" piece is "the size of the spatula". I wonder if the people at Locke's know that spatulas come in many different sizes. Apparently the one they're using is about the size of a side dish. And that side dish costs $11. Curdled... AND COLD. Because even though I asked for the pot pie to be heated so I could eat it onsite, it came out cold. And when I asked if it could be heated again, it STILL came out cold. At which point I gave up and resolved never to return here. Because I was eating outside. In 30-degree weather. Because they would not clear the two tables inside for me to eat there. (I asked.) They were serving samples on them. To nobody. Because the store was EMPTY. In sum: 1. They don't care if you want to know how much your meal will cost, or how awkward you'll feel asking. And maybe that's the point: If you're THAT kind of (poor) person, they don't want you feeling comfortable here...? 2. They think their stuff is so great it's worth 3x the excellent food that you can get at other restaurants out in podunk Virginia. 3. They can't be bothered to provide you with indoor seating in near-freezing weather, even though there are two tables indoors for that. (And two is not enough, and there's room for more.) 4. They can't serve a dish without curdling a sauce or get it properly hot, even when they try a second time. So I've removed this place from my Yelp bookmarks and will never be going back. But if you really do have tons of money to burn, and you want to drive 15 or 20 miles out into the middle of nowhere for some mediocre carryout, then this place might be for you. Finally, if I were the management, I'd start paying attention not just to my recipes, but to what the experience of eating in this place is actually like. Restaurants are not just about food, after all. Personally, I would: 1. Post my prices, ALWAYS. 2. Upsize the portions to justify the high prices--not to outrageous, disgusting, American fast-food mammoth sizes, but to something that makes more sense than an $11 side dish. 3. On a regular basis, eat my own food exactly the way I serve it to customers, so that I'd know exactly how long something needs to heat up properly, and what happens to the dish when I heat it that way. 4. Seriously think about what people driving all the way out to the back of beyond want in an eating experience, because it's NOT carryout and it's NOT outdoor eating in 30-degree weather. For God's sake, clear some room for indoor seating! It's such a shame about this place, because there is SO much potential for excellence here... :-( read more

My wife and I went to the Locke Store for the first time today while on a date and we cannot say enough good things about this establishment. First off, the environment is very clean. It's also very quaint and cozy. We were welcomed by the friendly staff and helped throughout our entire visit. The staff even kindly included a free cookie with our meal because they loved that we were out on a date together! How nice is that?! The food was also SO good. We got the tuna sandwich, the club sandwich, the bacon corn chowder and the gf chocolate cherry cookie. We were very satisfied with our experience and will be coming back soon! And in the meantime, telling all of our friends about this lovely place. read more

Oh good heavens, thank goodness this place isn't closer to me because it could become a BAD habit! Stopped in on a road trip and got their club sandwich on ciabatta, which had amazing, thick slices of turkey, fresh tomato, lettuce and avocado and crisp bacon. Paid nearly $40 (!!!!!!) for a small frozen tray of pot pie. I'm not sure it is worth that much but man is it goooood!! Around $15 for ziti mac n cheese of the same size. Sooooo good!! Kinda pricey but a cute atmosphere and YUMMY food! Stopped by again today (7/14/2018) and had the most amazing tuna salad on sourdough! I don't know what was in the tuna but it was crunchy yummy heaven and not even remotely fishy tasting. Seriously the best thing I've eaten in a long time!! Got cold cucumber dill soup and gazpacho to go. Those don't disappoint either! The gazpacho has a nice pepper to it and the cucumber dill has yummy bits of cucumber in a white base, but isn't creamy - just very light and refreshing! read more

Came across this place randomly. This is a gem in Millwood. The store has an old fashion style. They have a really good menu to pick from. I got the Locke Club which was so good but I was eyeing the pot pies, I'll get some next time. Local products are used in their food! You're greeted by nice ladies to take your order where you will see the baked goods on display. You will not be able to walk away with out buying one they look so good! I was very satisfied with my purchase of the double chocolate chip brownie!! Around the store there's a bunch of neat products and food to buy. Along with a big wine section. I like how you can sit outside on the picnic tables to eat. Just hope the weather is nice! read more

Let me start by saying I've been coming here my entire life, literally since I can remember - to make a long story short, my parents are in the process of moving themselves out to the mountains nearby (and have been in process since I was born), and shop for food a great deal here. It's been the stop to get pre-made (and delicious) food when we don't feel like cooking, snacks after visiting the pool, lunch while out, and locally made/raised groceries. The baked goods are ALWAYS amazing, there's local ice cream in the freezer by the door, and there's a great selection of bottled sodas - being underage, I haven't had much experience with their wine and beer choices, but my parents seem to find it more than satisfactory. Chicken pot pie is a staple, and (since I no longer eat meat) there's always vegetarian options. When it's warm, there's space to eat outside, or at the mill across the street (also an interesting visit). The atmosphere is great, and certainly pretty kid friendly, if the food isn't always the most simple - I know as a little kid, I sometimes gravitated toward the sweets rather than the entree choices. Overall, a great place with amazing food and equally wonderful employees. read more

I absolutely adore this place. I was around when it in fact was still a grocery store and the two cute older twin men ran it. The staff is incredibly friendly and know all of their regulars by name. When I taught at Powhatan and forgot my lunch I could always count on Locke's to fill me up! They have kept the same old fashioned ambiance. The shelves from the grocery store days are used for wine. Their selection is amazing and they even have a table for $10 and under wines. They also do tastings on Saturdays. What a treat! The food is to die for. Always something delicious to choose from and I always have a hard time choosing. They always have two tarts/quiches. Often 2 soup choices. Their gazpacho in the summer is a must try. Chicken salad or tuna salad, which you also request to be made as a sandwich. At least one vegetarian option on their sandwich menu and 2-3 sandwich options for the carnivores. They have local produce for sale as well. Cheese, bread, crackers, chips And yummy chocolate for sale. Their cold drink selection is also yummy! House made iced tea-lemonade with a hint of mint. I think it's called Lizzie's. Old-timey glass bottle drinks and local milk and chocolate milk. This place is worth a visit to the very small town of Millwood. read more

We are so lucky to have this shop in the community. They have all the essentials - basic pantry items, prepared foods (fresh and frozen), a phenomenal wine section, and craft beers galore. The prices are fair given the quality of their items. If you are staying in wine country for the weekend this is a great spot to fill your fridge and power your adventures. I know it was a good night because when I came around I was surrounded by money, pillows and gold and there is a sweet mist in the air. This was the best chicken pot pie and quite possibly one of the best things I've eaten in my 40 years on this earth. What the hell did y'all do to those chickens? The primary ownership is a catering business, and they sell selections from their menu and a wide variety of locally-grown or locally-produced products (milk, cheese, wine, bread, vegetables, baked goods etc). Top quality fresh ingredients, and they aren't afraid of seasonings or combinations like turkey, bacon and avocado (IMHO, their best sandwich offering). They have both hot and cold sandwiches, quiche and other goodies. It's a great stop for sandwiches and prepared foods, although the ambiance can be occasionally stuffy, as Millwood tends toward the moneyed classes. Saturdays and Sundays are great for watching the toffs if you're into that sort of thing. All the seating is outdoors (basically patio furniture and picnic tables, so not a great choice for rainy days). If locavore food is your thing, this one's a mandatory stop if you're in the Winchester area. read more

Locke store have the best food ever. I had their Hungarian chicken stew over rice or even egg noodles and it is full of flavors. My family absolutely love it. The chicken pot pie is delicious. Fresh, juicy chunks of chicken meat with perfect amount of vegetables and the crust is pure deliciousness. This time I picked up roasted golden beets along with Mediterranean chicken salad, can't wait to try it. They have the best baguette and I picked up three loaves along with one ciabatta. Did I mentioned, they also have delicious bake goods...oh my goodness. The brownie with peanut butter icing is delicious. Their chocolate chip cookies on the top list in my household.
