My wife and I on occasion seek out a German restaurant to get us ready for a trip the region in June. It's nigh impossible to find one in East Texas, but we've had better luck in Dallas... we struck gold tonight at the Bavarian Grill. The decor is spot on, a German oompah band lends to the atmosphere... the food is awesome. There is a varied and delicious menu that is prepared perfectly, the drink option are straight out of Germany and an exhaustive beer selection is sublime. The place was packed... yet our service was timely and the servers incredible. The place was packed as mentioned previously, but the bartender was friendly, patient and informative. Our waiter, Carl, was a gem... very helpful to food descriptions and drink pairings, he was fun to talk to and asked about our upcoming trip. They made us feel so welcome. This place is legendary, I've been wanting to come here so long and even after having to wait so many months it was worth it. Definitely the coolest restaurant in DFW and in my opinion, Texas itself. Ich liebe deutsche Bier, and The Bavarian Grill has loads of it. In fact, they only serve German beer, so don't sound like a Nancy Boy and try to order a Bud Light. Even if you do this, your server will kindly recommend a German beer for you that is similar to the one you requested. They have a beer card at the table on which you can keep track of all the beers you drink during your visits to the Bavarian Grill. When you drink all of them, you get a stein with your name on it and a prestigious membership to the "Stein Club". So far, my card has 4 beers checked off. They have live traditional music, a train that runs on a ledge just under the ceiling, and waitresses dressed in German style frocks. The atmosphere is quite jovial, and stepping into this restaurant definitely makes you feel like you are at one big German hoe-down. The food is great. I've been there twice and got the sausage plate both times. The large plate is big enough for you to split and totals at $16.95, in the event that you don't think you can handle all that food or spending a lot. Yall know I am all about the food no matter where I go, and when a friend suggested this place my first thought was, "but the food is so heavy!" and it is. Be prepared for meat and potatoes. When I was in Germany I ate at the chow hall and the German food I had at Ft Knox was gross, so I didn't have high hopes for this place either. I ordered the Weisser Spargel im Hühner Schnitzel nach "Spargelbauer Art" breaded chicken with white asparagus spears, emmentaler swiss cheese mousse, black forest and westphalian hams inside. They had this whole page dedicated to white asparagus so I figured I'd better get something with it. My meal came with salad, which is julienned carrots, beets, pickled tomatoes, and green beans. I liked it. My actual meal was fine. Came out quickly and it was hot. Huge portions. Mashed potatoes were real and just the right amount of creamy and the stuffed chicken tasted good too, breading was crispy and the inside was nice and not too cheesy. I am wondering if they expect you to share cuz it ain't cheap! We spent about $70 for 3 beers and 2 meals. You will definitely have leftovers and they give you a compostable to-go box, no styrafoam here which is pretty cool. The waitstaff was great. Yall know how disgustingly muggy it is outside right now, they actually brought us a fan to cool off since we were the only crazies outside. They were also good at suggesting beers. I had a Paulaner Oktoberfest and I liked it a lot. Overall the place has a relaxed atmosphere and most of the patrons are older or families. Have you ever wanted to go to Germany but didn't have enough money for a trip to Europe? Well, this may be your best chance to get a taste (literally) of Germany without having to spend thousands of dollars. The first thing you notice as you walk up, is a sign that directs you to the Bavarian Grill or to Munich. Lucky for you, your trip is only a few meters to the left. As you walk in, you'll see a bar where people are drinking beer. Ah.. I feel like I'm in Germany already! Lederhosen?! Yes, Herr Musik (Mr. Music) is wearing traditional Lederhosen and plays the accordian for your listening pleasure. Sometimes the music is a bit loud, but it's tolerable and he does chide the audience at times. It's entertaining if that's what you like. We were meeting friends who had been away for two years and were trying to catch up so that was a bit frustrating. Our friends have already gotten a table and we sit down and decide that we'll order a paprika schnitzel and our friends are ordering the funf (5) Schnitzel platter. The wife had already eaten so she said she'd just have a small portion and I could have the lions share. The food was actually quite good. Schnitzel was good, but I was pretty hungry so I could have eaten more. I suppose had I not shared the entree, I would have been well sated. If I had gotten a schnitzel without breading, I would have been starved. The "warm herbed potato salad" was okay. It didn't have a lot of taste, though it looked like it was potatoes with a dijon mustard sauce. You get two complimentary baskets of bread, each with 4 different rolls in them. They're all very tasty. It must have been everyone's birthday because the cowbell birthday song was played 3 times at least while we were there. They serve up a dessert to the birthday boy or girl and then the waiter or waitress comes out holding a tray of different sized cowbells. A different waiter, starts playing "Happy Birthday" on these cowbells. They play at the speed of about, quarter note = 30. Meaning one beat per two seconds. Hap -py birth -day to you Hap -py birth -day to you So on so forth. It's super be-labored and the waiter does not seem happy about it, throwing the cowbells into the tray after this musical aptitude test. It's novelty is high the first time you see it. My evil twin, her hubby, two kids another family friend and I have been getting together for dinner every other Friday night for a couple of months now. Each week a different person gets to pick where we go. So far, we've been to Norma's, Blue Fish, and Kenny's Italian. I had been here once before with a friend way back in 2005 but I couldn't even remember what I had. So I when I found out that Tracey's hubby had picked Bavarian Grill for this past week's Evil Family dinner... I had to call my friend and ask what I ordered. I was told to order the Jäger Schnitzel which was a breaded schnitzel is topped with a rich sauce and many mushrooms, served with tiny pasta dumplings and our signature mixed salad. Along with 4 bread baskets we started off with Kartoffel Pfannkuchen mit Sauerrahm und Apfelmus (potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce) and 3 cups of the Gulasch Suppe (Spicy Goulash Soup with beef, pork, paprika, onions and peppers). This soup is going to be the reason I add this to my "Comforting Soups" List (http://www.yelp.com/list/comforting-soups-dallas). The Schnitzel was great and crunchy and the mushroom grave was rich and delicious. I loved the Signature Mixed Salad... cause lets face it. I see alot of poor reviews on here from people who have never had German food or say they lived in Germany but can't seem to spell the name of what they ate. I myself have never lived in Germany. My best friend's mom was from Germany and all through high school, I was raiding Hanna's fridge for any left over German yums I could pilfer. Now that we've established my experience with German food... The Bavarian Grill is pretty great. Something to consider when you go is to get something off their seasonal menu. Schnitzel and brats are great and all, but I've had the best luck with the seasonal fare. If you're going for the typical stuff on the regular menu, I recommend the saurbraten. I was not as impressed with the venison, so save your money there. Their breads are excellent and I appreciate their draft beer selection. I REALLY appreciate their German wine selection. It is SO HARD to find red wines from Germany in the states but Bavarian Grill keeps at least 3 German reds hanging around. The atmosphere is a little on the cheese side. But so are most Germans I've met so I think it's fitting. If it helps, for my college German class, my professor took us on an unofficial field trip to here from Denton because she swore it was the best German food outside of Germany. And she's from Germany. The only thing I've never liked about the BG is it's location. It's in this failing strip mall next to a bunch of furniture stores and bad traffic. They have it so well situated inside that you would never realize you were in a strip mall once you're there and it makes it a fun secret, but I often wish it were in a building that better fit the restaurant. Lord knows they HAVE to make enough money to make this happen. We have date night here every few months. It's not a cozy date atmosphere with a daunting wine list and menu in wedding cursive font, but ya know, that get's old and pretentious after awhile anyway. Try the BG for something new and undoubtedly fun. :-) It's pricey but not unacceptable. You are paying for the way the food is prepared rather than the rarity or extravagance of the ingredients. *If you've never had German food here's what you should know: It's heavy, buttery (not greasy, buttery), gravy-laden, meaty, and vinegary with lots of mushrooms and cabbage and a pinch of nutmeg. Where do you think we got the idea for chicken fried steak? There's not much in the way of greens so if you're a vegetarian, don't be all butt hurt when your options are spatzle and a salad. If you're vegan, you better just stay home. (Spatzle is a German peasant food that is a cross between a dumpling and an egg noodle. They are boiled then sauted in butter. They are bland. I'm German... as in a German-passport having, green card carrying foreigner. Grew up in Germany with my American stepdad, and didn't come to the States until I was 22. I'm Swabian, but lived in Bavaria for most of my life. Everywhere I've been in the U.S., I've hunted down German restaurants. This is THE best place. There's some big German restaurant in Fort Worth and it is disgusting, Bavarian Grill is the closest you will get to German food in the U.S., in my opinion. I don't remember seeing a lot of mushroom dishes on the menu. But, I'm not very adventurous with my food, I go for sauerbraten. You can pull up the menu on their website and check it out, before deciding to go. I always get the sauerbraten with spätzle (instead of dumplings). Extra red cabbage. It's the first time I've had red cabbage that tastes just like it did in Germany. The goulasch tastes 100% like my mom's goulasch. Unfortunately, I've always hated goulasch. But, my kids can't get enough of it. The schnitzel and everything is very good, according to other people. I'm not a big meat person. I'm all about carbs when I come here. Love the rolls, I steal all the little laugenbrötchen (pretzel rolls). The cakes are good, though I'm not sure if the Black Forest cake has cherry liquor in it, I can't remember. When I used to live in Austin, we would come here with my Oma (grandmother) when she flew in from Germany once a year. She liked it. It was the only time we were in the area, so I'm really glad I live so close now! There's a TON of beer, but I'm a bad German who doesn't like beer:o, so I can't help anyone there. I love the atmosphere of this place, very German. Train rolling around and all. Never had a problem with service, although my husband is taken aback by the female owner who has been our server 3 times. I think she's funny, he isn't used to people other than me being blunt. The only way I can describe the Bavarian Grill (or BG has I fondly refer to it) is a little piece of Germany in the middle of Plano, Texas. It's an authentic German Restaurant and Bar. The food and beer are great. Some of my favorite aspects: Andrea (the bartender)- she is the typical German beer frau. When I first started going to the Bavarian Grill she scared me so much I wouldnt' talk to her. Now I love chatting with her. I used to live in Plano so we went all the time, but now that I've moved it's a little harder to make it out. There was almost a year's span of time between one of my visits, and she still remembered us and treated us like old friends. She may have busted our chops a little about taking so long to come back, but that's why I like her so much. She's real and honest. The Stein Club/The Beer- They sell over 40 beers, and if you drink one of each you become a member of the Stein Club. You get a free stein and one free beer. I've finished one card and am currently on my second. Don't expect to find Miller Lite here. They only sell German beer. Polka Music- It may sound corny, but those polka players can seriously play. One night the guy played Bohemia Rhapsody...and played it well. The Food- It's German and it's delicious. I'm a mid-20 something and would much rather spend my night at the BG than any other bar. You can get spaetzle and other German favorites here, usually done pretty well. The bottled Germany beers appear to be in good shape. The draft beers are not always treated well. I have seen fly swarms come out of the CO2 room behind the taps. Service can range from attentive-but-distant (stern Oma) to incompetence. I once waited for 45m for one of the simpler entrees to come out when the place wasn't busy at all. The music varies from the lyrical and lovely to obnoxiously loud. I think it should be more consistent for the $$ cost of the entrees. It probably deserves a 3 but I am giving it a 4 because I keep going back. read more

This is a fun place. The train traveling high along the walls is a blast from the past. Has some interesting decor and quite the filling menu. And we had someone playing accordion while we ate. Quite entertaining. Before the meal was some pretzels and a tasty brown mustard. Also there was some excellent bread. Then for the meal we both had some schnitzel with spaetzle. I should know, since I lived 8 years in Germany ! The waiting staff wear authentic South German clothing. Ah... then there is the Accordion music and singer. If you get lucky they play this fun chicken music...and they serve different sausages, Schnitzel, Knödel, Sauerkraut mit Braten, German Salat, different Bier + Biergarten; and Nachtisch Bienenstich pastry. Of course they have other Desserts , too! If you need a boost of fun for the week, I highly suggest you to go there. They also have toys for kids. I'm a sucker for schnitzel, and was delighted that my mammoth-sized portion fed me for a good two days before its reincarnation as love handles. This place is just fun. Decent selection of hearty beers, a covered outdoor area with long picnic tables for the frat-boy and lacrosse outings, a train running along the ceiling perimeter, and enthusiastic customers clapping (and dancing) along to the equally enthusiastic band. I love German food. I'm adopted myself, so I don't really have a great idea of from whence my ancestors came, but my dad's family is German and so that's good enough for me to be honorarily German. As such, I grew up with some considerable nostalgia for all things Germanic... the language, the labor and the food. The food? I know, I know, everyone thinks German food sucks. I don't. Many a friend has had their first German meal with me and pretty much all of them have said, 'wow, it's pretty darn good!'; It just kind of has a bad rap because it's so different than other food in Europe. However, it's probably much more closely related to the way we eat in America than Southern European fare or French cuisine. Anyway, enough about German food in General, how is the Bavarian Grill? Well, for one... Bavarian. Though Bavaria is considered somewhat of an embarrassment outside its boundaries, the spirit and goofiness of beer-fueled sing alongs and hearty food is appreciated world wide. When I go to a German restaurant I usually have the Wiener Schnitzel as sort of a temperature check, you'll know a lot from the Wiener Schnitzel... it can never be horrible (battered and friend veal never really sucks), but it can be too greasy, too thick and kind of flavorless. I would put the Wiener Schnitzel at the B.G. sort of in the too thick, a little too bready category, but it definitely doesn't suck. When you get Wienver Schnitzel in Vienna (where it's from, German name, Wien), it's usually very thin and light, so that's pretty much my standard. I have to say it's not quite up to that. However, while the food is not really, um, authentic in that it's pretty tuned to the Texas palate, it's still really yummy. They are really 'hot-and-brown' takes on traditional German classics and can really be enjoyed. The portions were huge and I wanted to try it all, so I got a side of red cabbage and potato salad too... I couldn't eat half of anything. I did manage to order a dessert and only got part way through, which said more about the dessert than my flagging appetite given my well known dessert stomach. Overall it's a really fun place to go. The atmosphere is light-hearted and enjoyable and even though it's Americanized in some respects, the whole vibe of the Beer Halls it's trying to emulate are not in the spirit of authenticity, but fun. read more

After having a few trips to Munich I was in search for a good Biergarten locally. While Bavarian Grill does not quite meet the same spirit of the biergarten I visited in Munich since it is in a strip center, the food and atmosphere are certainly authentic. We went on a Saturday night and it was very crowded. We were given a postcard of a German landscape as our number. After about 15-20 minutes at the bar a waitress in German barmaid attire came and found us based on our post card. We were seated in the main dining room where there was live music by a guy in lieterhausen playing the accordion. Later in the evening he passed out song books and we had a sing along. Not all songs are German, for example "roll out the barrel" and "Yellow Rose of Texas". The beer choices are all German and authentic. There were about 20 different choices on tap, from light to dark to wheat. They even have the 1 liter mugs that the HoffBrau house in Munich use. As for the fare, the menu is typical Bavarian fare. A couple of choices of snitzel, roasted chicken, roasted duck, and spatzl. I ordered the schnitzel prepared with a light gravy type sauce that was excellent. The mashed potatoes served with it were cold and over satured with garlic. I substituted the vegetable medley with the oven roasted potatoes with bacon and they were very good. My wife ordered one of spatzl dishes and I had a few bites and it was excellent as well. During every visit to Munich I have to get the Apple Strudel with vanilla cream sauce, so when I saw this on the menu I had to try it. While good, I was disappointed. The ratio of apple to pastry was off, with way too many apples, though they were very well flavored. The pastry on top had a number of charred black spots that negatively impacted the flavor. After 2 0.5liter beers, 1 .3liter beer, 2 main dishes, and dessert it was about $65 pre-tip. A bit more than I had budget for dinner, but the food, beer, and ambiance was worth the price. So 4 stars since the potatoes were cold and the dessert didn't quite measure up. read more

The staff and owner were so friendly. My husband lived in Germany and so he was so excited to try out this place and it did not disappoint him. Only down fall is that for me I am not a fan of German food, not at all, but I went for my husband. When I asked if I could look at a kid menu and offered to pay double if not 3 times to be able to order a burger or chicken nuggets I was told by the waitress she would get "fired" for giving it to me. Went in with a large group, but they don't do reservations. The waiter was rude and acted as if we weren't worth his time. The food took -forever- to come out, and when it was brought out the waiter had no idea who had what (which makes it difficult when the names of the dishes are in German). The air conditioning was broken, which made the restaurant stuffy and VERY loud. We ended up sitting outside due to this, which was apparently a big hassle to the waiter, and he made this very evident. Good German Food - Lunch is Great - Dinner is a little pricey I really like this place, and when I am in this neck of the woods, I try to make the stop... a great secret is that the lunch prices are fair! You can get a schnitzel for under $10. The menu is typical german, and I love that they change the specials with the seasons. This place has pretty good food, and the schnitzel usually is really good. Lunch is around $10 where dinner is closer to $20, so there is a big difference. Portions differ, but the lunch portion is plenty. The sides sometimes are hit and miss, but I really like the frnech fries, and the alpine potatoes. The Ham hock for dinner is always fantastic, and at dinner you get live music, so that is really a plus. For lunch we sat out in the beer garden and that was a nice experience as well, sort of like patio dining... anyway, the food is good and I can strongly recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner... read more

To think I spent 34 years of my life assuming German food would be gross! I felt like challenging myself last night so I braved going in here. Oh. My. Goodness. Am I ever glad I did! The food was absolutely amazing. And would you believe they have gluten free and vegetarian/vegan menus? I had the white asparagus spears w potatoes, vegan wurst w mashed potatoes and saurkraut, pickled mixed vegetables, and red cabbage. A complimentary gluten free (by request) bread roll came with everything. I couldn't believe how good everything was. Who knew pickled veggies were so delish? I'm officially a fan. The service was friendly and the decor kitchy - in the best possible way. Beer steins on the walls, working miniature trains, and sceneic photos of the German countryside. They even had a live polka band that accomodated a request for 'in da gada da vita'. If you haven't heard that version, you haven't lived :p. Lots of beer drinking going on and even a drinking game, as expected, but this isn't a rowdy debaucherous place. On the contrary it's very family friendly, and many small children were present that night. In short, this place exceeded my expectations by a longshot. I went with the basic sausage plate. Of the 5 options (brat, smoked brat, nurnburger-- all grilled; knackwurst and weisswurst, which are boiled) I went with nurnburger and weisswurst, with spatzle and a potato pancake as sides. The waitress had declared the nurnberger as her favorite-- the most flavorful of the bunch. It was a thin link and indeed tasty, but not the most flavorful sausage I had ever enountered. The weisswurst's appearance was entirely off-putting-- it was a fleshy, pale white shade. Flaccid. The flavor and texture can pretty much be described the same way. The spatzle was firm and pleasant enough when dipped in gravy. The potato pancake was also very good. The restaurant was packed to the gills on Friday night, with several large groups celebrating brithdays. The demographic ranged from an extended Indian family to a couple of single, 20-something guys. Live entertainment came in the form of 2 guys playing the accordian and clarinet, singing the usual fare, e.g. Chicken Dance and Edelweiss, and inviting audience participation. Would I pick it over Henk's? Not for the food, for sure. But for a crowd less attached to the food, and more focused on drinking songs, then Bavarian Grill is the right choice. read more

Who doesn't like a place that serves good German beer along with Oompah music. Well, I give their beers a solid 4, their food a 2, leaving them doing well enough but plenty of room for improvement. On a weekday evening we joined der bier frau, Andrea, at the bar with several of their regular patrons. The others were a jovial crew hell-bent on drinking anything put in front of them so they could fill all the boxes on their beer card. A noble challenge, I agree, I just wondered at times if they knew what they were drinking. For example, that night an Oktoberfest beer tap was spouting a dunkel. No worries, it's another check on the card, I suppose. Helles, dunkel, it's all the same, right? Not to meine liebe who only drinks helles. Me, I approach beers quite more liberally. Heck, been brewing the stuff for a number of years now. Enough moaning, I should not complain. It's not very often that you get several versions of Spaten, Paulaner and H-B... ... in Plano no less! Ok what about their food? The menu looks and acts like it has great German line-up. We have eaten here several times over the years and had up and down meals. Some times they do it well. (Just for a bit of clarification, you're getting this from a guy who's married to a German, traveled there a few times and even imbibed at Rose Montag, Germany's extremely frigid but wacky version of Mardi Gras.) So the last time we went there I ordered Schweinenackenkotelett (I know, there ought to be a law about making a word THAT long). Perhaps it was the beer talking, but I thought it only right to order the longest word on the menu. Tragically the pork chop was dry and tough. The onions on top were edible but not so lucky with the veggies on the side. Further, our meal took over half an hour to prepare even though the place was nearly empty. And at almost $20 per plate for the entrees the meal is not exactly cheap. Still, when the bands are playing over at the Bavarian Grill (or anyplace for that matter) there's nothing like singing along in a round of "Im himmel gibts kein bier." Great long time establishment. The owner is onsite and overseeing operations. German quality and hospitality throughout. If you aren't happy with the restaurant, it's you, not the restaurant. They have been operating in the same manner for 20+ years we have been visiting. Ask questions if you are not sure as the staff is happy to share the heritage and history behind the menu. Wow, I have been woefully remiss in not reviewing this place. This is my favorite German restaurant, period. It is the best German restaurant I have visited, and I have visited more than a few. There is also a large bar and biergarten-like area if you only want to come sample their amazing beers. Speaking of beers, I have been here enough times to earn one of their beer steins, which requires you to drink one of every beer they have. It took me years, but it was a fun task. :-) First, there's the ambiance. Staff in German attire, German decoration, and live German music (often in lederhosen). Check. The service is generally fantastic, even when it gets crowded, which is quite often. The staff is always pleasant and courteous. The food is also great. What I love about it is that they have great standard offerings, but they also have a rotating seasonal menu that is both tasty and educational. If I don't go for something seasonal, I will usually go with a sausage plate (always with some smoked bratwurst) or Jaeger schnitzel. They reputedly import their bread. It's all good, but the pretzel bread is far and away the absolute best, so much so that I ask them to just bring that out. Seriously, it's good, and I usually don't think bread is worth the calories. My favorite sides are 1) the vinegared salad (I forget their name for it) with various vinegared veggies and 2) the potato pancakes (I put both sour cream and apple sauce on them). Oh, and the red cabbage is great too. If you like creamed spinach, you will probably like theirs, but it is richer than most I have tried, so fair warning. This is my "go to" German place and the place by which I measure all other German restaurants. I am stunned at the negative comments I have seen, but we all have different expectations and I guess some people have fantastically bad luck. I mean, I have probably been here at least 50 times over more than a decade and I have tried a LOT of different food here and it has always been at least good. One the rare occasion I think my server is slacking, I will politely nudge them and everything is sorted out immediately. In my experience, if they do mess up, they do a good job making it right. The good: Both my husband and I had delicious main courses! The schnitzel was and mushroom was very delicious and a large portion (I only ate half). The potato pancake was good and came with both apple sauce and sour cream (I'm in the sour cream camp myself). The vegetables were "meh" - too many carrots in my opinion. My husband got a pasta dish with mushrooms and boar sausage. The pasta was tender with a delicate cream sauce. The mushrooms and sausage were flavorful. We also sampled several beers which we enjoyed - I'm not a beer drinker so the grapefruit one was a good choice. The bad: The place is a bit busy and service was not as attentive as it should have been for the price of the meal. I ordered veal schnitzel and received pork. Water was not refilled promptly. Items were mixed up on bills which were split with other people that we dined with. The ugly: Dessert is my favorite part of the meal and their dessert menu looked amazing. We went for "Prinz Regenten Torte", which is described as "the pride and joy of the Bavarian pastry chefs" and cost around $10. I'm pretty sure what we received was an embarrassment to Bavarian Pastry Chefs. Maybe it was good while fresh, but ours was dry, stale, and had a "sitting in the fridge too long" funk to it. Not suitable for serving. My husband and I each took a spoon or 2 and left the rest. The waiter did not notice. I would have forgiven the service mistakes and given this place a 5* if it wasn't for this dessert. read more

This comes as close as humanly possible to the incredible German food my Omi used to whip up. In addition to the great eats, there's a good selection of beer, a fun atmosphere complete with live music, and a super friendly staff. I've been here numerous times over the years, usually for special occasions, and it's always been fantastic. Most dinners are between $15-$20 and well worth the price. read more
