High Street is always a fantastic little pharmacy. They always have our medication, they have it on time, they have it at a reasonable cost and they tell us when it's not any of these things. That's what makes it a great pharmcy. I wish they had an online portal sometimes to refill things and tell me when things are ready but small cost for what is a great team. I've been a customer for five years or so and back then the staff were super well organized, diligent and friendly. I'm not sure what's happened there but it looks like there's been a lot of staff turnover and the last year has been shocking. Multiple trips to film the same scrip each time with a different explanations. And the staff treat each question as an insult and reply like mopey teenagers. Not what you'd expect or hope for when you're trying to support a local business (a pharmacy no less!!) I get that not everyone is on cloud nine these days economically taking out any job dissatisfactions on the customer is counter productive. As in, customers might leave. As in, bye. read more

I've been coming to this pharmacy for five years, and over the past year I've noticed a major decline in how things are being managed. The women who work here are always kind, professional, and clearly doing their best, but they appear to be consistently overworked and overwhelmed. There also seems to be constant changes in rules and procedures, which creates confusion not only for employees but for customers as well. The environment no longer feels organized or properly managed the way it once did. As a long-time customer, it's disappointing to see because the staff themselves are wonderful people. I genuinely hope management takes a closer look at how this pharmacy is being run and makes changes that better support both employees and customers. read more

While you're sick the least you want is to deal with bad customer service. My local pharmacy did not have the meds my 2 yr old needed. (As he is also sick )Luckily his doctor uses this pharmacy and I am glad I met this place. To the lady that helped me today! A big shout out to you! I've been a Customer for over 20 Years. Ownership changed at some point. Staff is impatient, incompetent, rude and the list goes on. Delivery drivers out of pocket need to be trained. Staff and Pharmacists very impatient and ghetto. Talk crazy to Customers very bias. Not a good place anymore. Treat everyone like Crack heads. Staff act like they're high and all. Started giving me the wrong doses and hanging up in my face while inquiring about my meds. They can kiss my behind rude heffas. This place is so unassuming. It smells amazing when you walk in. They have everything you need from a pharmacy. There is a small section with fresh food. There is a fun old school candy section and toy aisle that my kiddo loves. Excellent customer service every time. They also auto refilled my kiddos prescription and even opened the bag to ensure it was the correct medication. Prices are also reasonable. read more

Being unable to travel without painful consequences, I tried to talk to this pharmacy. They can't tell me if they take my insurance, unless I go in with my insurance card? So, I have lived in the Laurel for almost 20 years and have always seen this pharmacy, but always went to the big drugstores, like Walgreens to get my prescriptions filled. Until this past year, I decided to have it filled at High Street Pharmacy. I walk in and it reminded me of when I was a kid when I use to go with my mom to get prescriptions filled. The store had a very old school vibe of the 70s, everything arranged neatly and a case to the left that sold little random statues and hair accessories and other things. In any event, the biggest thing is that no matter when I go in, there is no huge line or just standing there or hearing people complain about how long it takes, etc. My experience has been a positive one thus far. The only thing that I don't care for is that no one calls to let you know if your prescription is ready or not on a consistent basis. Sometimes someone will call you but most of the time, you would have to call the pharmacy to check or just pop in. Since I live right around the corner, that's fine. Overall, I think it's a great pharmacy with the nice folks who are very helpful and friendly! read more

There are two reasons to like High Street Pharmacy: the friendly service and the fact that it's an old timey neighborhood store. But as a place to fill prescriptions, in my several months of it being my go-to pharmacy it was only so-so. I had four medications prescribed ahead of a surgery and one of the prescriptions didn't show up in their system. I could see all four in MyChart as being sent here but when I showed up the person helping me only saw three of the four and didn't have any thoughts on why the last one wasn't showing up. Maybe the issue was beyond their control, but I've had plenty of meds prescribed the same way and never had this happen anywhere else. Since this was on a Friday and they are only open til 2 on Saturday and closed on Sunday, I opted to switch pharmacies when following up with UCSF. The limited hours compared to a big chain pharmacy are not something I'll count against them since it's a different kind of business, but it does make it less convenient and is something you should consider before filling prescriptions here if you're really busy. A big issue for me, which won't matter to a lot of people, is that most (maybe all) of the staff do not wear masks. I know we're at a point where most businesses don't require masks and people are generally over it, and they are entitled to run the store however they want, but if you're immunocompromised or otherwise cautious this is concerning. It's one thing if you're a bar where people go to let loose, it's another if you're a business that sick and vulnerable people routinely come to for the medicine they need. It's a cute neighborhood pharmacy with friendly employees, so I'll try to support them when it makes sense to do so. But for now I'm gonna stick with Walgreen's for any essential prescriptions. read more

I can't say enough about how wonderful this pharmacy is. I've been going to them for years, ever since I decided to avoid the chain pharmacies and find an independent one. At High Street all of the staff know me, my prescriptions, and medical needs. They send a holiday card each year that they all sign. I'm greeted by name when I enter the door. They are very fast and reliable, and also very good about calling providers when a prescription doesn't go through. For example one doctor I go to has staff that constantly mess up prescriptions. High Street Pharmacy is very patient and willing to reach out to them multiple times to make sure I get my medication. The store is pleasant and has a lot to offer, with gifts, cards, a few household items and groceries, and a full complement of toiletries and over-the-counter medications. Prices are reasonable. There is a jewelry counter with some unique designs made from fair trade sources. They also have a sizeable section of home health aids like canes, sitz baths, wrist and knee braces, and more. The pharmacist is always willing to have a conversation about medications, side effects, and interactions. Because they know *me* they are better able to advise me on new medications and how they might interact with my current ones. They have a great free delivery service. It used to be that you had to have at least two prescriptions to get a delivery, but they dropped that requirement for Covid. I've had them deliver my medications many times and it's a blessing. The drivers are good about calling and texting when they get to your home. One downside - they are open half-days on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. This can be stressful if your refill date falls precisely on a Sunday, or a holiday, and you're on your last pill/dose. I generally blame the providers for writing such tightly timed refills, because many things can delay a prescription by a day or so, creating unnecessary stress. In my case delays are always caused by my provider, not the pharmacy, but they are the ones who often help me solve the problem. If you are fed up with dealing with chain pharmacies, go independent. There aren't a lot of them, so we're lucky to have High Street Pharmacy here in Oakland. I highly, highly recommend them for your medication needs. read more

Best pharmacy in the world. Everyone here is kind and helpful and if I have any issues with a doctor or insurance they're patient with me and helpful, always keeping me updated. Also the free delivery is so generous and kind. I'm so glad I switched from a chain to here. I could never go back. Also the jewelry selection is seriously unmatched. I agree with so many of the reviewers here. This is a wonderful little pharmacy which reminds me of the old Leo's Pharmacy on Park Blvd, back in the early 1960's. The staff is very friendly and they have a very interesting array of products, including gifts, candy, and the best selection of greeting cards I've seen anywhere recently. Please support them when you can. True, they don't mail you coupons, but I would rather pay a few dollars more and be treated nicely rather than support corporate drugstores. For immediate need prescriptions they may not be your best bet, however, as they aren't open as much as the corporate drug stores. It really is like stepping back into the past in this gem of a pharmacy!. read more

OK, so you're used to the Walgreens pharmacy or perhaps the one in Safeway. Step into High Street Pharmacy. It sure looks different. Old 50's store? Sparsely stocked shelves. Going out of business? Longish wait at the register line. Where have I landed? Lighting sort of weird. Clientele looking sort of destitute....... So. Why not a one star but a five star? Well, there are several reasons. First of all this pharmacy serves the community. Everyone is treated as the special customer, be it an emperor or pauper. Everyone has value. The owner runs it that way. The pharmacy delivers. They go the extra mile.... But this is why I will go the extra mile (or the 4+ miles) from now on: I needed to get a specific medication for myself. It was previously withdrawn from the market because the company that made it was losing money. Eventually another company got the right to produce the generic and they went live within the last 12 months. I called Walgreens x 2. One store said not available, the second one put me on hold forever to research "availability" after I had to spell the name for the associate 4 times. (A pharm tech should be used to listen to spelling of meds!) I then called an independent pharmacy that used to reside in the building that my clinic is in. (For those who don't know, I just happened to be a physician.) I spoke with a tech whom I have met quite a number of times. Very friendly, very pleasant. "Sorry, we can't get that medication for you." So, what do I do now? Let's try High Street. I called. The tech checked and couldn't find it. OK. Let me just get your number and I'll research it. So an hour later I was called by the owner. He not only found it for me, he was going to order a minimum supply where I only needed a fraction. Before he knew my insurance would cover it, he was offering to give it to me at cost! WOW again. And I got the Rx less than 24h after my initial call. We should all patronize local businesses whether they cater to the elite or the common folk. Please consider using this pharmacy. They deliver for free, so no trip necessary. read more

A. This store is neatly arranged and from glancing around seemed to have anything you may ever want at pharmacy. Great, lots of pharmacies can be like that. But not every shop has a Sandra. I came in from the Laurel St Fair with a roaring migraine. Sandra helped me find the meds I needed, refilled my water bottle, let me sit until I felt ready to go, and gave me a hug. She embodies empathy and compassion, and she was such a comfort at the moment. Thank you is not enough. If you live in the neighborhood, please support this local business. I appreciate this pharmacy so much. I came in to grab a few items (they are open during COVID!) and everything is so organized and easy to find. As I perused the vitamins, they asked if I needed any help. I decided to suck it up and ask a dumb question - help picking a vitamin. They called over a pharmacist to come help me! Professional help picking vitamins! The service was just above and beyond. I can't wait to come back here, and hopefully switch any prescriptions to come here as well. read more

I stopped in to see if they had my medication in stock. I told the young lady I typically go to CVS but they said they wouldn't have it until MAY 1ST (what kinda Fuckery is this!!) in either case two CVS' later and still no luck High Street Pharmacy was my last resort before giving up and going home. The young lady asks me if I've been there before. You think she missed hearing me say I typically go to CVS. Anyhoo, I replied no. She walks away to speak with someone behind her where all the medicines are. After a couple minutes she returns and tells me and I quote "We can't fill it." I asked can you call to verify with the doctor? I thought they were apprehensive because I've never been there before. Keep in mind they have the medication I need IN STOCK. I confirmed that. She says no because it's ONE prescription. We don't fill just ONE prescription. If this isn't the bull of all bull if I've ever heard any. I left in sheer dismay. PLEASE NOTE: THEY NEVER SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE WHAT I NEED BUT THAT THEY WOULD NOT FILL IT. read more

I've been back several times and it really does get better each time. I wanted a vintage looking little wedding gift card and I actually found a (real) vintage wedding gift card (the graphic on the front probably dated it to 1970s)! Plus, they had Obama t-shirts that had been embroidered by a small shop here in Oakland. Did I mention that they have their own parking lot next door, so you don't have to worry about parking on MacArthur and trying to dodge traffic as you get out of your car. read more

This is a strange little pharmacy. It's a much larger space than they seem to need. The merchandise they have out on the shelves is sparse and really only essentials. Like, if you need a heating pad, they have it. But only one option. They also have jewelry and trinkets in a locked case, which doesn't really fit with the rest of the store. The customer service is not great. They don't seem to be concerned with being friendly-just take your order and accept your payment to get you out of there. There is a parking lot with ample space, which is a super nice feature. read more

My experience during the 8 months from October 2014 has been mixed. Most of the staff are courteous and helpful. Once or twice I have had an assistant be surly and unhelpful. Most of the time they come through. They tend to take the time to resolve problems with insurance companies (something they have no control over but in my experience is common). A couple of times the prescription has not been ready even though they called and told me it was - and I left it a day before collecting it. Once they failed to renew or let me know the prescription needed renewing. This month (May) no call to let me know whether the prescription is ready. It's a local business that I want to continue to patronize - if the failures to "deliver" continue I may be forced to change. Come on guys. I'm on your side. Get it together. Update: Sad to report, as of March 2016 I took my business elsewhere. Mistakes became common, staff attitudes were rude. I am glad I changed - prescriptions have been error free since I moved and staff at the new pharmacy are pleasant. read more

THEY OFFER FREE DELIVERY!!! After my surgery, I couldn't walk for two months and they brought me my Meds the same day with a smile for FREE! I love to support small locally owned Businesses, so this is a perfect Pharmacy for me. The staff is knowledgable and helpful. Everytime I go in I only wait 10 minutes max. What Pharmacy has service like that? None that I have been to. The prices here are always cheaper than any big chain or other Pharmacy that I have tried. Compared to the Walgreens and CVS, High Street Pharmacy prescription prices have been consistently cheaper. Plenty of parking, minimal waiting. All in all a nice store to shop. read more

I want to second what Nobbi posted about this pharmacy going the extra mile. They don't care if you are the Queen of Sheba or a derelict, they treat everyone the same. It does look different than Walgreens or a CVS,as it is not like a supermarket pharmacy, but like an old fashioned pharmacy, where everyone knows your name and treats you with respect. If I have a question Ken or Richard the pharmacists are only too happy to help me. and Pat and the gals at the front registers do the same. Yes they are busy at times but they are worth it.
