    Wandering the nursery (6/9/18)
    Marie B.

I visited Bay Hay and Feed Nursery as my first stop on another day trip to Bainbridge Island on 6/9/18. They have it going at this local anchor destination...clothing, shoes, pet needs, a plethora of stuff and things from local purveyors, gift ideas, food/wine, road trip/picnic basket goodies, lovely garden plants, bales of hay, and even an adjacent café. It's not kitchy, it actually functions as a place where locals shop and convene. Every nook and cranny has something of interest - love it! OMG Bay Hay and Feed Nursery even has cute, fluffy, cheepy chicks right at the entrance. I had a surge of endorphins, much needed on my birthday. Maybe I need to get an aquarium and a flat screen that features an ongoing reel of cute baby animals, like these chicks. Best therapy for this overworked, exhausted urban warrior. Thanks again to local resident and avid Yelper, George S. for his post convincing me to pull over and check it out.

    Old school merchantile!

While the annual Chilly Hilly bicycle ride comes close, most visitors don't make it to the Rolling Bay neighborhood's hub. "Bay Hay", is a Bainbridge Island landmark and a destination shopping spot. An old school mercantile, Bay Hay, is able to meet the needs of traditional island residents, tourists and gentleman farmers alike. We routinely buy chicken feed, plants and gardening equipment and, occasionally, wardrobe items. They have a wonderful gift shop with a fantastic collection of cards and notions as well. They have lately expanded their grocery section with an exceptional array of local meet, produce and dairy products. They also show case an excellent assortment of locally prepared items like jams and wine. If you live here on the Island, you know this place. If you don't, it's one of the few reasons to pay the expense of bringing a car over. My recommendation: make a day out of a visit to this neighborhood. Start out with coffee and a breakfast treat from Rolling Bay Cafe. Take a stroll through the local neighborhood to a water view or beach walk. Finish your walk with a stroll through Bay Hay for post cards and gifts. Then take your post cards across the street and address them while enjoying a tasting at the Rolling Bay Winery. Walk back across the street, post your cards at the quaint little country post office. Then head across the street once more for a home style Italian dinner and desert at Via Rosa. Trust me, you'll be bragging about this day for months.

Pay a little more, but the lifetime warranty and reliable support were worth it. Last year I had a tip come off one of my favorite rods. I didn't want to botch scraping off old epoxy and attempting a self-repair. There are experts at Sage I trust(ed). I was passing by Sage HQ during a winter steelie expedition up there. They were not happy to see me show up at their door. Visitors are forbidden now. I snuck around the back, to receiving, and managed to get them to accept my drop off. I couldn't help but notice many hundreds of dusty rods piled in bins, awaiting expert repair and restorations. However, at 3pm on a weekday, not a soul was in the repair department. Is there anyone working here? Now, 6 months later, I have my tag # and such, but nobody will reply to emails. I just want to know if my beloved rod will be repaired and returned this summer. I'm a patient person. But this is so sub-par that I will never buy another Sage. Got a new Scott for my wifey, may need to get one for me too. And oh do I love my 5 piece, 4 wt Winston. High Sierra dream rod. Wonder how their 6 weights perform on the Lower Sac, Trinity, other favorite waters. Forget Sage. They are a shadow of their former selves.

Sage has definitely revolutionized the industry since then. I left fly fishing to start a family and raise kids and I am glad to see the company is still inventing and staying on the edge as I am coming back into the sport. I just bought two more rods and I am introducing fly fishing to my kids....on Sage rods of course.

Remington, for over the last two decades has been going on strong with a number of their different products! Great bang for the buck. If you are looking for a starter kit for a gift the beginners, look no further. Several years ago I worked with my cousins, nephews and nieces with a beginner combo package called "Pursuit Combo", today it has been replaced by what is called "Path Combo". It is a 5 weight line, 8'6" foot, 4piece rod and reel. Now the way they have it marked is 4/5/6 weight line, but with most all rods you can load up or down on the rod & reel for the weight of the fly line. This rod and reel is a nice setup for the rockies, where a small fly can be thrown, cast with a little wind and even a little distance if needed. This line has a life time warranty but you still need to take care of this combo unit. If you use it in or near salt water, I highly recommend cleaning it after every use with fresh water. Currently you can not do an online warranty setup, but they have a print out form. Just print out the form, follow the instruction, fill out the warranty and send it into them. Do not send any fancy or personal rod case, use the card board case from UPS or FedEx. Keep an eye on their waders, they are pretty good products as well! Trying to save money and have some decent products, look at Redington. Great fly fishing equipment, bang for the buck.

The kayaking was easy, nothing strenuous, making it easy to watch the bioluminescence. And the bioluminescence was absolutely magical! They look like fireflies in the water! You can light them up with your paddle or even your hands. If you stir the water and scoop it up you can even get some lit-up plankton in your hand..
