The bad: Too many dogs, we saw at least 12 while we were there. I actually have an allergy to dogs and this was too much. This place has been on my list for years now, and since yesterday was a summery day and I was itching to be outside after work, I finally said, "Hey mom, let's go see if we have any trouble getting on this thing." Our first greeting was "Reservations?", to which I responded, "Nope, just trying to see if we can get in." LOLOL. We got in. It was an early Tuesday evening around 5pm, and we slowly watched as more and more folks funneled in as time passed. Staff are EXTREMELY friendly, so that's a plus. There are upper levels to this boat, and ample "bar seating" which is really just a long table around the perimeter of the vessel, which we chose to perch at overlooking the water. The vibes here are extremely pleasant and chill; maybe because it was a Tuesday evening, it wasn't loud or rowdy even as more patrons showed up. It was super peaceful and the drinks are strong enough to warrant the pricing. The food is pretty good, but the vibes and a drink in the breeze with well-attituded staff are the strong points here. You also place your order at the bar and get a little buzzy device that lets you know when your order is ready at the pickup window. Oh, and the boat rocks a little. This is one of Harlem's hidden gems! Its ship located in West Harlem, great in the summer. Phenomenal drinks, great bar food and complete vibe on a sunny day. It doesn't get overly crowded however when I recently went there was a party so they had sit in one area. I love it here!! The Baylander is open seasonally- not sure the exact dates/months but I know it's during the warmer months and then closed for fall/winter. It's situated on the Hudson with amazing 360 views of Jersey, the city and the GW bridge. There's great music, happy hour from 3-5 on Tuesday-thursday and 2-5 on Fridays. Their hh includes food items and great drinks for $11! I personally love the captains colada, which is a frozen pina colada- she's strong but smooth and has an amazing coconut cream flavor. I swear I'm tipsy off just one. I haven't had much of their food but i've had the fries with old bay and they're so delicious with the sweeter drinks! Service is always really nice and friendly here- there's a bar that you order at and they give you your drinks right away and a buzzer for food that you pick up at a window. Baylander is an overdue review. Lunch with friends is great because you can order and pay separately. You get a beeper and pick up your order at the kitchen. It's all outdoor seating with an overhang in one section. One thing to remember is that this unusual restaurant is seasonal. They close for the winter. I recommend everyone try it at least once. My son and I have come here almost weekly since they first opened. It is a relaxing space with views of the George Washington Bridge and the Hudson River. Staff is always inviting when I and my son walk in. The place is dog friendly. When I lived in the area, my dog Buddy would come along and relax with us. Now that we moved it is more of a father and son hang out. I love the drinks here, and they change them at times. Happy Hour is 3 to 5pm on the weekdays. My favorites are the Conger Crush with Deep Eddie Ruby Red grapefruit vodka and the Captains Colada depending on my mood. Food is fast casual. You never go wrong with the crunchy crispy fries. I like the Maryland Crab and Potato Fritters, which are like tater tots with crab pieces in it. My son likes his cheeseburger sliders. To order, you order at the bar and get a beeper. You pick up your food in the middle of the boat from a counter. I heard a few people complaining about this method of food delivery. These people seemed like over privileged folk used to having everyone do everything for them(people it may be their first time away from home). There are servers walking around picking up finished trays and drinks. There are 3 levels. The top for sunning yourself, the mid casual and the bottom for a cloudy day. I was told there are some games on the bottom level and there are some model airplanes. It is especially nice seeing the sunset along the water. Being that this restaurant is on a ship, the decor and ambiance is lovely. And the view of the water and city is beautiful. I ordered the BBQ Short Rib Sandwich, which consisted of slow roasted beef short rib in strawberry BBQ sauce with coleslaw, fried crispy onions, as well as sweet pickles on a potato roll. This was pretty tasty, though I didn't really detect much strawberry flavor in the sauce. The short rib was tender, juicy, and well seasoned. The toppings added a nice crunch and freshness. I also got to try the krinkle cut fries, which were addicting! Fried to perfection with wonderful potato yumminess. The chips with guacamole were decent as well. For some reason, I couldn't stop eating them even though I'm usually not a fan of guacamole. For dessert, I really wanted Foxy Brown flavor of Mikey likes it Ice Cream Cup, but they were out of it, so instead, I got the S'mores Jumbo "Treat House" Rice Crispy Bar. I've been to Baylander a few times already, once with my daughter, another time for date night and out with my friend for happy hour. Each time this place has delivered. I love that it passes the vibe check no matter the type of group you are with. I love seafood and I love dining outside, so coming here is always a no brainer. Can we talk about these views ? I had the opportunity to attend the Baylander's Season Opener Event and it was such a great time!! This retired service ship started it's life in 1968 as a harbor utility craft during the Vietnam war and continues to serve as an amazing vessel to chat, dine, and drink with amazing views of the Hudson River. This sunset event gave us the opportunity to try their drinks (which had me super lit by the end of the night) and a few of their new menu items that were all super tasty and flavorful. I arrived a bit late so I didn't get to try everything that was introduced but what I had was delicious and I'll list their new additions below. I came to this place to Celebrate my Friend and I Birthday. We sat on the top deck of the boat where you're able to see everything. Such a beautiful and blissful place. When you walk through the gates you'll be walking up a ramp to the boat. I believe you can walk in but for the most part i suggest making a reservation. I had gotten to my friends pretty late so I'm unsure as to how long the waiting line will be. The host came up to me And asked " how many in your group " and i said " just me, my party is in there already "and she let me through. Once i got on the boat i was stunned (Ima vibe kinda woman and that right there is definitely a vibe). They have the downstairs area where they have the Bar and Food. The tables are a bit Cluttered (to me at least ) and to get upstairs you would be having to go around them or the people. Once you get to the side of the boat theirs stairs that take you upstairs ( them creepy stairs, i would be very careful wearing skinny heels on those stairs). if im not mistaken you can even sit at the front of the boat ( I think with a reservation). The Dj that day was doing pretty well too, the food was pretty okay. I forgot to take pictures i was so caught up with my friends and just enjoying the vibes that when i finally ate i dogged the fries. The drinks was a BIG No for me. Idk it just didnt taste good. This is a must-go place if you're the first timer in NYC to experience eating on a boat that doesn't sail anywhere. To get in, you must pass the test, the heat test. Stay in line in a hot summer, say if the weather is hot, or enjoy the view when the weather is nice while waiting to be seated. We came here by accident. We didn't plan to eat on a big boat by the water. We wanted to go to a park nearby but couldn't find the entrance to the park, so it took us up to here and voila! We found this! Christine was a host that day, and she did a lot of running around trying to get a table for each group. It wasn't easy, going back and forth from the dock to the boat many times a day. We got a table after waiting in line for 30 mins. Once we got to the boat, we had a good time. Here, you must order at the bar. You get the drinks right away but must wait for the food to be ready and get called from the pager they give you to pick up across from the bar. It wasn't hard, although my explanation sounds hard, haha! We ordered chicken wings, Shishito peppers, shrimp taco, and a hotdog. The food wasn't bad. I enjoyed the tacos and Shishito pepper. Baylander Steel Beach is a lot like The Frying Pan insofar as it's a bar on a boat, but with a less bro-y crowd. I learned that this navy ship was used in the Vietnam War, and it feels a little weird that it's a place to party all these years later, but I guess it's as good a use of this ship as any. Since the CDC recommends that all socializing happen outdoors, I've found myself drinking on boats a lot this summer, from Pilot in Brooklyn to the Honorable William Wall off the coast of Ellis Island and now the Baylander at West Harlem Piers. On a temperate day this is a lovely place to have some drinks on the water and not put a huge dent in your wallet. There's an unspoken acknowledgement among New Yorkers that you're going to pay a premium to drink in an unconventional space, whether it's a rooftop, a bar on a boat, or speakeasy. The drinks here are mostly $10-$13, which is a really refreshing price range and you can save even further by ordering by the pitcher. They accept reservations for parties of 4 or more or you can just walk up and get seated on a first come first serve basis. We were seated at a long picnic bench and were allowed to walk around the boat as long as we stayed masked. Their cocktail menu is surprisingly exciting, with the Apple Frose and Captain's Colada standing out to me the most. Both were nice and strong and totally delicious. We ordered Cajun shrimp tacos and sliders, which were okay, but I'd prefer to eat elsewhere before hopping on the boat for drinks. If you're going to order any food though, make it the cajun fries, which were crispy and had a really nice seasoning on them. I came with a group of around 20 people to the Baylander for a work event. It was a beautiful summer afternoon which is truly the optimal form at which you will see this venue. This is a very unique bar now that is basically a decomissioned boat that is docked near Harlem. Once you get on the boat, you enter a really large, open deck that is nicely decorated and has a very lively and fresh ambiance. I had been here before in smaller groups but this experience made me realize how great this spot is for larger group events (we were told there were 2 other big parties at the boat that day!) There are several levels in the boat but we had these picnic style tables with benches at the top deck. Service was super organized. We all had wristbands of a certain color which I think they used to keep track of tabs for the different groups. They have a surprisingly large drink and also food menu. I got a frozen piña colada which was delicious and refreshing. It had a very nice flavor that was not too sweet and had little shredded pieces of coconut which added texture and extra flavor to the drink. My boyfriend ordered a margarita which he also really enjoyed. We both agreed that the drinks were pretty strong and one drink was enough to feel the effects of the alcohol which was nice because it feels like you are getting a good bang for your buck. Our party had a few orders of bite-sized food brought to us from their Party Trays menus out of which I tried several items: Fish and Chip Tacos: these were so good! Battered fish with tartar sauce topped with two fries and wrapped in a warm four tortilla. Fish portion was generous for the bite-size taco, flavors went very nicely together and were very reminiscent of "fish and chips". Guacamole and Chips: a staple and pretty good here. The tortilla chips were warm and crispy which makes me think they were freshly made. They added the guacamole on top of the tortillas and, even though I usually prefer the guacamole on the side, this was still pretty good. Chips were not too oily and had a perfect amount of salt. Blistered Shishito Peppers: at first I thought these were jalapeños and was scared to try them but turns out they are just these green peppers that are not spicy at all! Seasoned with lime and salt. Very good option for those who want a salty snack but don't want tortilla chips. Very succulent and juicy. Crispy Chicken Sliders: little chicken sliders on the softest potato bun you could imagine. The crispy chicken, bacon, thick slice of cheddar and chipotle ? sauce went very well together. The chicken was well seasoned and very crispy. The bacon was divine and they added just the right amount for it not to be overpowering. Would recommend! Edamame Potstickers: Panfried. Crispy potstickers with mashed edamame filling. I think this was my least favorite and felt a little flat to me flavor-wise. I might not order myself if I were hosting a party but they were still overall good. Carne Asada Taco: super good! The steak flavor was very nice and the meat was well cooked, the tomatillo salsa in the taco was tangy and was perfectly balanced by the salty cotija cheese. The flour tortilla in this felt more like a warm pita to me but was still very tasty. Cheeseburger Sliders: probably my favorite dish of the night! Their cheeseburger sliders were generously sized, had a very juicy and flavorful burger patty, and a good slice of cheddar cheese. Again, their potato buns are super soft and feel like pillows from heaven. I'm not usually a big burger fan but these were so simple in composition and really stood out for the quality and flavor of ingredients. Chili Lime Shrimp Skewers: little shrimp in skewers. Very tasty and to me tasted a little Cajun-like. Nicely cooked too! Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies: for dessert we got one round of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies which were crispy and had a good amount of chocolate chips in them. They were a little too buttery for what I'm used to but still good. Mini Vanilla Ice Cream Popsicles: these bite sized popsicles were just brilliant. Very small cube of vanilla ice cream (probably the size of half a hand palm) with a little chocolate covering on top. Very refreshing for a summer evening... everyone loved these! I was very amazed by the food and the very good management of large groups. The ambiance is also pretty unparalleled on a nice summer evening. I was not able to take pictures to do it justice but I will definitely be going back soon to try things from their regular menu and take pictures to share! This huge ship is a unique spot. Directly on the water.Like if you sit still you can the ship moving. It gives off authentic boat vibes . It has picnic style benches all over the ship. You go up and order what you want and then grab a seat . The views are amazing especially at night time . As far as service goes . It's pretty much a help yourself type of thing. Which I don't mind if I'm just looking for something quick and easy . The bar is pretty cool. They have Patron margarita on tap. ( never seen that before ) and as a true tequila lover. This definitely made my day. But the real star of baylander is definitely the chicken sandwich. Super simple but extremely effective. So good. This bar opened up in the middle of COVID, and seems to be abiding by the current guidelines. Temperature checks, hand sanitizers, masks, and socially distant seating were all in use. There was a long wait (1.5 h for us) to get inside on a Friday night despite there not being many parties in front of us. You can make reservations if there are 4+ in your party. Once we were in, the experience was great. The food was amazing! Highly recommend the smokin' fries. They were well seasoned and so crispy! The wings were top notch as well. I would skip the pretzel bites next time, the texture felt stale and it wasn't that flavorful despite the cheese dip. The frose was strong, fruity and delicious. Too strong...combined with the very very slight sway of the boat, and the alcohol, I couldn't keep my balance and spilled half my drink. Felt sad but I got myself a second drink ...And turns out the steel beach lemonade was even better than the frosé!
