I grew up around Creole and Cajun Food my whole life. And living in Memphis I don't get it as often as I did growing up... Leading to the cravings. In retrospect I should have just driven to Deja vu, in fact .... Looks like I'm going to have to do that soon and from here on after. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As a bar Bayou does its job ... It has put forth an effort to appear slightly as a Dark Louisiana bayou bar. It doesn't quite hit the mark ... Because it was about two and this chick was starved! We watched two waitresses Walking around the spacious dining area between the four tables that actually had people at them. We watched and waited ... Smiling and suggestively nodding as in 'bring me a menu please before I start gnawing the table' kinda nod. We where acknowledged several times and finally one of the waitresses said 'be with you in a minute'. This minute was more like ten. Finally we get our menu and drink orders in... I asked if the shrimp and grits had any meat in them and just had seafood ... I was told no just seafood. We ordered the flight of soups as we wanted to try them all... My sister tasted the duck and chicken gumbo and nearly gaged. Their seafood gumbo was ok.... Definitely not the gumbo I grew up on but it wasn't terrible. I suppose if I where placed in a situation where I had to eat something from Bayou ... Or DIE... Well I would eat the seafood gumbo. The seafood bisque was ok... Again not terrible but not particularly tasty. The red beans .... Horrible. Sister said the Gator chili was decent and the only thing she would ever consider ordering again though containing very little actual gator meat. I ordered a half dozen grilled oysters. According to the menu they where to be toped with shrimp cheese and louisiana mirepoix. Oysters came out with no grilled flavor drowned in some sort of cream and cheese .... No shrimp ... Not so much as an onion in sight much less a mirepoix! I had ordered the shrimp and grits as I had been told there was nothing but seafood in them .... Boy was that a lie. I fished out six smallish shrimp and ate just them. My sister had the Jambalaya. It consisted of tiny little salad shrimp chicken and slices of sausage and a strange flavor which she finally isolated to the actual sausage. We grew up on aundouille sausage ... In fact our uncle makes it occasionally. Whatever that was in the jambalaya they where calling aundouille we are not totally convinced it was ... And my sister said the bad flavor was conning from the fact the sausage tasted spoiled. Needless to say ... She did not eat more than a few bites of the jambalaya. So there we sat with huge bowls of uneaten food ... Empty water glasses... And all our other plates (from the soup and oysters) crowding our small table. I was never asked if I'd like another beer ... No offer to remove plates... No water refill. In fact our waitress practically ignored us and had to be flagged down for anything. My sister optimistically wanted to try the bread pudding .... I warned her ... But she did it anyway. I tried a bite. It was terrible. My sister being of the more steel stomach type (and her side was covered in Caramel sauce) ate several bites before she made this funny face ... 'This is freezer burnt!' I just said 'I told ya. I can't believe you ate even that much!' It took forever to get our final bill for a table full of practically uneaten food. Then to top it all off ... We both got a little sick. And as we had not eaten anything else that day ... Other than Bayou. In the middle if this review I decided that one star was really an unfair assessment .... In this case zero stars would have been generous. I suppose if you are just wanting to hang out at a bar .... It would serve that purpose.... It just seemed to move very slow there. Food was just okay. The "Cajun queso" was lukewarm and tasted similar to regular white panchos cheese dip, but the seasoning on the tortilla chips was good! The debris sandwich was supposed to come with a sauce on it and it did not. The blackened chicken sandwich was not blackened (I suspect it was just grilled and there may have been a mix up) and it was supposed to have no cheese and honey mustard. We would have normally tried to correct our orders, but with the service being on the slow side, we decided to just live with it as the food was good enough! Ok so we were visiting and went to this place based on TikTok reviews. It wasn't bad but they oversold it. I am from Louisiana so I'm a bit picky on my food. For starters the jalapeño margarita was great, much better than the regular margarita and just leave the French 75 alone....this is not a French 75 establishment! The dip was ok, but a bit greasy and way too much cheese for my liking. The wings were good but eat them hot because they are breaded. I'm not a fan of breaded wings. The salad was crisp and the lettuce was fresh, again they can hold all the Parmesan. They must get a discount on cheese cause it way too much in every dish. Just recently left and I typically love it, but I also never order this much. When we came it wasn't a long wait which was good. We got sat down quickly and received water. Our waitress was so sweet. The servers range from bubbly and nice, then you can also get inefficient and forgetful, but wait, there are also a straight up assholes too! Me being an asshole, I just don't like competition, ya know. Anyway.... Why come back? It sure isn't the damn meatloaf special. It's terrible. If you read this far, consider yourself warned. I have been coming to bayou for at least 8 years. When I first ate there, the food was great. Zydeco wings were the best wings I have ever had. Now the wings are smaller and the zydeco sauce is oily. I had a very disappointing experience. During the entire visit trivia was going on, which had our server completely distracted and all over the place. At that point, I stacked the food to the side and called it quits because it was clear the meal wasn't enjoyable. When I spoke with the manager, instead of trying to resolve the issue, I was told there was nothing he could do and that if I didn't pay the tab he would call the police. He said, "Sorry, but I'm not changing anything -- you've been here for hours." I explained that we had only been there about 30 minutes, but the conversation was still dismissed. The issue was never about paying. The issue was being served food and drinks that weren't properly prepared and then being brushed off when I spoke up. In my twelve years of owning restaurants, I would never feel comfortable speaking to a paying customer the way we were spoken to. Hospitality is about solutions, not shutdowns. If you expect quality food and professional service, I would suggest spending your money elsewhere because this experience did not reflect those standards. I walked in the most smallest private parking lot. It was a bit tight as far as getting to the entrance when Memphis traffic isn't in a hurry. I got to the entrance and they also have a ramp which was easy accessibility. Which is a major plus for inclusivity. BRING BACK FRIED PICKLE SPEARS AND REAL MUFFULETTAS! Not terrible, but some of the changes under new management are not awesome. The "muffulettas" are a Po' Boy style which is just blasphemous. I used to drive out to Bayou regularly just for the muffulettas because they were the most authentic-like I could find in town. Got the Po' Boy version after the switch and noped it almost instantly. Doesn't even taste muffuletta-esque. My muffuletta obsessed nephew is not a fan either. And they removed fried pickle spears entirely?! Those were another of my favorite staples. I'm glad the restaurant was purchased so it could live on, but I much rather prefer the former menu. The Debris sandwich is good. It's all I get these days as my entree which is boring. The oyster prices got too high for such wimpy oysters so I only get those in a blue moon. I've had the alligator chili. It's good. Zydeco wings are probably one of the best things I've tried. The menu online is not exactly what you'll get in store. Would've loved the Crawfish Bisque posted on the website's menu, but it doesn't exist when you get there. read more
