A friend was visiting (5/9) and we decided to dine in the Cooper - Young area for dinner. When we got to the area, we decided on The Beauty Shop. My friend owns a larger catering/events establishment in Georgia and was excited about the menu at the establishment. We walked in (on a whim) and asked if tables were available (clearly we saw some on the patio and inside once we entered). The greeting from the hostess was - let's just say less than inviting. . It was around 7:40p and she said "well since you don't have a reservation, the soonest I can get you in is 8p" ...no problem we will walk around until then. My initial thought, screw this reservation - if the hostess has this type of demeanor, what could we expect in terms of service? As my friend was still excited about the menu and to taste some of the pairings, we decided to wait. At 7:59 (like clockwork), the notice of our table being ready was sent. The hostess seated us and again, I wasn't optimistic of what would occur during the visit. The server that greeted us was GREAT!!! We ordered SEVERAL appetizers and drinks and all were AMAZING - (the grilled avocado with the shrimp was worth the trip alone). For dinner we ordered Peking Duck and Ribeye Steak Salads (and more drinks). Both were amazing. And while the desserts looked divine, there was absolutely no room. We were impressed with the old Beauty Shop decor - it really was a conversation piece. It's small and quaint and we had a lovely chat with the patrons alongside us. The food and service EXCELLENT! I'm glad that I didn't follow my first inclination to leave (because of the hostess and the "curt" demeanor). Posted: 17Apr26 I've had several really enjoyable dining experiences at The Beauty Shop over the years, which is why it was especially disappointing to have one evening in January 8, 2025 fall short--particularly with a large party of 12 celebrating together. Let me start by saying this: I truly enjoy this restaurant. The atmosphere is unique, the concept is fun, and historically the food and service have been reliable. That's exactly why this experience stood out so much. For a party of our size, we would have preferred seating toward the back of the restaurant where it was noticeably warmer and more comfortable. Instead, we were seated in an area that felt a bit chilly, which set the tone for the evening. The bigger issue, however, was with the food and service execution. Four dishes out of our party of twelve were essentially untouched. Two scallop entrées and the Steak Frites were overcooked, tough, and unfortunately inedible. The special ribeye of the night--the most expensive entrée--was also not finished. What concerned me most was that no one from the service team paused to read the table or ask why multiple plates remained full. Only one dish was removed, and there was no follow-up conversation about the others. We spent over $800 that evening, including drinks, appetizers, sides, and desserts, so expectations for attentiveness and quality were understandably higher. When a table leaves several entrées uneaten, that's usually a signal worth acknowledging. After the visit, on January 9, 2025, I took the time to provide feedback privately through OpenTable in the hope that management would review it and respond. Unfortunately, I never received any acknowledgment. Even a brief reply would have gone a long way. Silence, in this case, was disappointing and felt like a missed opportunity to demonstrate care and accountability. I'm sharing this feedback because I believe in the restaurant and want to see it succeed. I work in a customer-facing industry myself, and I know firsthand how small service touches--checking in, asking questions, and following up--can make the difference between a good experience and one that keeps guests coming back. I genuinely hope this was just an off night. I would still consider returning, but I do hope the level of attentiveness and follow-through improves. read more

Beauty Shop restaurant is located in the Cooper-Young district in a former 1940s-style beauty shop, also a Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. The original hair dryers add to the ambiance, the glass-bricked booths are delightful, and their American cuisine is served with a twist. Make a reservation via phone or the OpenTable app. The parking is all free street parking, so it can be a challenge on weekends. Upon entrance, the hostess is immediately to the right with a full bar to the left. There are some tables in the front of the restaurant, but there are the fun booths/hair dryers in the back. FOOD: 1. Steak & Eggs (Grilled ribeye, your choice of eggs, ponzu butter, onions, and truffle parmesan fries; 3/5): The steak was OK, not memorable enough for me to order again. 2. New Orleans Style Shrimp & Grits (Poached eggs, tobasco worcestershire garlic butter, and scallions; 3/5): This was quite salty for us. The presentation looked delicious otherwise. 3. Jamaican Jerk Fish Club (Jamaican cane vinegar aioli slaw, bacon, tomato, avocado, chips, and lemon marmalade; 4/5): This was our favorite of the brunch options above. I would order this again, as the vinegar aioli slaw really tied the fish with the other ingredients. 4. Crispy Vegetable Wontons (Kale, spinach, tofu, scallions, ginger, water chestnuts, cilantro, and jalapeno jam with mirin dipping sauce; 4/5): This is part of the dinner appetizer menu. I believe this usually comes with 4 dumplings, but we added another one for our party. This was pretty tasty with the delicious dipping sauce. 5. Thai Style Minced Chicken (Lettuce, mango chutney, labna, mint, rai rum, thai basil, shiso, peanuts, and dipping sauce 3/5): This is part of the dinner appetizer menu. It was OK, not memorable enough for me to order again. 6. Hawaiian Tuna Agua Chile (Tomato lime, toasted seeds, cucumber, Benton's prosciutto crisp, shiso, and cocoa spice; 3/5): This is part of the dinner appetizer menu. The tuna was not that fresh in my opinion, and it was OK overall. 7. Smashed Scallion and Goat Cheese Fingerling Potatoes (4/5): This is part of the dinner sides menu. The goat cheese tied this together, as it melted within the potatoes. We all really enjoyed this. The service was good. Our drinks never touched bottom. Our orders came out on time. Of note, there is 20% gratuity added to 5+ parties. Would I come back? It would not be at the top of my list. If someone wanted to, then sure. read more

I came here with my friends for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived around 12:50pm and the hostess let us know that the next available table was at 1:30pm. We came back in a half hour and were able to be seated. We ordered a plate of beignets for the table, which were served with thinned out preserves. The beignets were still warm. Very sweet, but good. I ordered the pork carnitas, which was served on a toasted tortilla with eggs, cilantro, jalapeños, lime crema, and pineapple purée. The carnitas were a bit dry, but the dish was good. Our server was wonderful; very friendly and funny! The inside of the restaurant has some beauty-parlor-inspired decor, including the old style of hair dryers. read more

Dined here on a Wednesday evening around 6:30 PM in the Cooper-Young area. It was just starting to pick up, but since we had a reservation for 7, we were seated immediately. Our waitress, Abby, was fantastic! She appeared to be the only one covering the dining room, yet she handled everything seamlessly and didn't miss a beat. Service was quick and attentive throughout the evening. The decor is unique and true to the restaurant's name--Beauty Shop definitely has a distinct vibe. The space is on the smaller side, but still comfortable. The menu is very eclectic, offering a mix of items like curry, tempura shrimp, guacamole, and shiitake mushrooms. Some combinations were a bit unexpected (watermelon served with wings definitely caught me off guard), but overall the food was good--I'd rate it about a 7/10. We did have to send back the fries and fingerling potatoes because they came out cold, but Abby handled it right away with no hesitation and made sure everything was corrected. Overall, it was a solid experience. While the food wasn't quite enough to make me go out of my way to return, I'm glad I had the chance to try it. read more

It's always a boozy brunch at the beauty shop. The ambiance is inviting and wait times are pretty normal for food (10-15 min). Appetizers came out in under 10 and getting our drinks was a breeze especially for a Sunday. While they don't serve mimosa carafes, they have the "big boy" mimosa that gets your day started. Now if it were spiked? Whew!? Then we're talking. I enjoyed my steak and eggs made to my liking and my server Keith was very attentive. Came in for dinner right at 5pm, so the place was totally empty, but the vibe is very cool. Service was absolutely perfect, fast and very friendly. I opted for the Please Plz Plz and then the Beautini. Both were good and not too sweet, but fairly simple. It feels like they're missing just a dash of creativity to take the drinks to the next level. For food, the grilled peaches are unbelievable. The blue cheese and balsamic??? Perfection. The eggplant was also excellent, no notes. The only one that didn't quite hit right was the carnitas. The meat was tender but also very very crispy (on the verge of burnt) and a bit sweet, which is not what I think of for carnitas. And then the sauce was just sweet on sweet... It just didn't all work for me. Not bad, just meh. That being said, I'll come back and try some more of the menu for sure! There were so many things that looked good. read more

However I didn't love the food sadly. It wasn't "terrible" but in my view along with others in my party we would not rush back for then food we found some items to be rather sweet. We ordered the watermelon and wings, jerk sandwich, Cobb salad, and corn fritters. The wings and sandwich were a little too sweet and not much jerk for the sandwich. The Cobb salad was delicious!! I liked my lunch so much I went back the next day for dinner. Lunch: I had the grilled pear salad, it was mind blowing! The heat gave the pears a brûléed crust that felt like sugar on the tongue. Then I had the beet and supreme orange salad with fish. The fish was perfectly cooked but totally unnecessary, the herbs and lime leaf relish sent me over the edge and back the next day. Cut to dinner menu, the crispy dumplings were rich and decadent, the romanesco cauliflower was a European grand tour for the tongue and the Japanese eggplant dish was both new and exciting. The sipping summer cocktail with apricots was delicious and not too sweet. The bartender did charge me $2.50 for a soda water which I found pretty cheap of him. He was also kind of pushy. On our first morning in Memphis, we made our way to the beauty shop restaurant. We did not have a reservation so we were seated in the overflow building next-door. Our waitress was extremely kind and attentive. The service was a little slow, but we were in no rush. To start, we shared an order of beignets and the char grilled grapefruit. The beignets were tasty - a little more cake-like than a traditional, New Orleans style beignet. The char grilled grapefruit was unremarkable. For my dish, I decided to order the shrimp and grits while my husband ordered a Reuben and my father ordered the chicken and waffles. The shrimp and grits were tasty and had a nice bite to them. Priscilla Presley used to go and get her hair done there when it was just solely a beauty shop then they had converted it into a delicious little spot to have food and drinks. I had ordered sweet tea along with their special grilled cheese sandwich that incorporated veggies, and jalapeño jelly. It was surprisingly very good. Every breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner here over the past few years has been a completely wonderful experience. The aesthetics and history of the location are to die for! But that is only the surface charm of this gem. The menu is interesting- seasonal- and always full of wonderfully unique and tasty dishes. I will say, I shed a small tear that the frozen drink machine was broken! But not to worry, the eclectic cocktail menu was a perfect substitute. With our cocktails we had the tempura shrimp starter as well as the crispy dumplings! I totally regret not taking photos this time! Presentation was clean, on both dishes. Flavor profiles of both dishes were complex and complimentary. Our mains- ramen and the pork chop- were both excellent choices. The one gripe I do have, is the pork was terribly overcooked and tough- though the flavor for the edible center-cut of the portion was terrific. Our server was bubbly and kind, attentive as well. I've been here twice, and I have not been disappointed yet. I will say that for brunch, if you don't have a reservation, you might get a seat at the bar. It is not the fastest service, but that's what we get for not making a reservation. If you are from Cali or been in SoCal for a while you know chilaquiles are life, and these are very similar to what you get in San Diego. I will be back for more drinks and food. read more

Beauty shop is a Memphis institution for good reason: the interior is the exact reflection of the Cooper Young neighborhood - quirky and hip - and the food choices are exciting. I frequently find I have to wait a long time to be seated even if I have a reservation, and then that service at the table can be hit or miss in terms of timeliness. I've come here dozens of times for brunch and a handful for dinner, but brunch is where I think Beauty Shop shines. There are so many choices that are classics with a twist and they are frequently well-executed. Most recently I was in with my husband for his birthday. We shared the corn fritters with blueberry jalepeno chutney and they were excellent. He got the thai-style breakfast bowl which was good, not outstanding. I got the blueberry pancakes with coconut crema, which I wished were a bit more coconut-forward. Our service on this visit was great once we were seated. read more

Wow! I found this on a "Must Try" list and I'm so glad we came. Not only is the menu excellent with some delicious Asian-inspired fare, but the service was top-notch and the ambiance is amazing. True to the name, it has a beauty shop theme in the back with three or four cute tables with a vintage hair dryer you can sit under. I snagged the last open one and was so happy! This is a chic place with a great menu and friendly and helpful servers. I started with a Thai iced coffee - yum! We tried the fried Thai-style dumplings and there were four of them, good sized for an appetizer, they were fresh and warm and had a delicious sauce on top (not too much, just a drizzle). Hubs loves pizza and grilled cheese so when he saw they have a grilled cheese of the day he ordered that with their house-made chips. His grilled cheese had bacon and a fruit jam and was perfectly salty and sweet. The house chips were crisp and yummy. I had the grain bowl with loads of veggies, mango, slaw, avocado, egg, cilantro, etc. I added jerk chicken. Yum! It was filling and delish. Hubs saw the Jewish side of the menu with the rye bread and had to have the Oy Vey fries with cheese, scallions and pastrami. These were very good but very filling as they're large streak fries. Super heavy. I had a matcha pistachio gelato before we left and it was SO good. Loaded to the brim is pistachio, probably too many, but flavorful and great texture. They had a huge menu for dessert. I loved this spot. In a cute part of town with other shops on a two-three block walk, parallel parking or pay parking lots where you can use and app and plenty to see and do. They have breakfast, lunch and dinner. A real gem. read more

Sharon, our waitress was absolutely awful. She only came to our table when she wanted to get paid or to reluctantly take our order. Every single time I needed a refill, I had to beg for it, remind her what I was drinking, then wait for 20+ minutes. She didn't ruin our girls birthday lunch but she most definitely made it unenjoyable. It was very obvious that she was aware of her added 20% gratuity because the effort was invisible. The food was okay. Definitely not great. Biscuits are hard to mess up, these were very dry. To management, reconsider who serves your food to your patrons. read more
