We recently became empty nesters and have decided to try one new restaurant each weekend. This weekend we ended up at Bog & Barley and it did NOT disappoint. The restaurant has a really neat vibe and is decorated better than most of the restaurants in the memphis area. We came at 5:00 on a Saturday night and we were seated immediately without reservations, but when we left, they did have a small wait to get a table. We started with the pimento cheese toastie which was garlic bread with melty pimento cheese on top. We both really enjoyed it. I decided on the filet with peppercorn sauce. I asked for it it to be butterflied. My steak was cooked to perfection with the perfect amount of pink and it sliced like butter. I got the peppercorn sauce on the side and used it for a dipping sauce. I really liked the sauce, but it is really peppery. While I loved it, some might find it a little spicy. My husband had the bourbon glazed porterhouse pork chop. His was cooked perfectly fly as well and was super tender. He really enjoyed it, but mentioned that the sauce did have something in it that gave it a little spice. We shared an order of rosemary duck fat fries as the entrees come à la cart with no sides. The fries re heavy on rosemary which my husband didn't care for. I enjoyed them, but they were definitely not my favorite. Neither of us cared for the mayo sauce that they came with and preferred to eat them with ketchup. Overall it was a great experience and we will definitely be back! read more

The service was fantastic. Some appears to be rush or don't want to be bothered. But overall, they are very good. Fanatic decore, and ambiance. It is a good place to go to socialize. Unfortunately, the food has been consistently underwhelming during my recent visits. I first ordered the lamb chops. They were not what I would consider traditional lamb chops and were surprisingly chewy and difficult to enjoy. I returned and decided to try the Irish Curry Chicken. It was, without exaggeration, one of the worst dishes I've had there. The menu described it as chicken thigh, but it was clearly chicken breast. The dish lacked basic seasoning and flavor. There was very little salt, umami, or curry flavor. The rice was wet, overcooked, and mushy. Overall, the entire meal tasted like something taken from a grocery store freezer section and reheated. At this point, I would recommend sticking to the fries and the burgers, which remain the strongest items on the menu. read more

The overall experience was okay, we arrived 30 minutes before closing so I had zero expectations of an true dining experience . The smash burger was great and the fries were delicious- thick cut with a slight crunch to the bite. The Guinness chocolate cake was also good- beat when warm. read more

Irish Irish Irish (Fancy Restaurant) This was the first experience making reservations for an Irish pub, but it was way more than a pub. Think date night. The food was a delight! Recommend the pimento cheese bread sticks for appetizer or any other time. Also, this was the first time I've had a Kilkenny draft which was another highlight. I see now it's rare to find. Smooth and creamy. If I lived nearby, I would be here more often. It's a little on the expensive side, but well worth the price and experience. Good place for a World Cup Watch party. Last night our group spent hours eating, talking about the highlights so far and mostly, watching the Argentina game. The service was awesome, the food great as usual. We tried some new menu items: Deviled Eggs (Good), Pork meatballs (too spicy ), Lamb chops (excellent), and a dessert - Almond Pavlova (Excellent). As soon as you walked in to the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a wall of beautiful bar area. You don't see many around here. Food and drinks were spectacular! Our server gave us really good recommendations for all and she was spot on. We went with Burger and Fish & Chips and finished off our meals with two types of desserts. I am an absolute Bog & Barley fan but this review comes with disappointment. The atmosphere is always great and showed up for Easter brunch after church to a live performer singing some great late 90s/early 2000 tunes (pure nostalgia). The waitress was nice but not very attentive. Focused more on the larger table which I get but I also am a paying customer. Food came out quick and hot and always for a great price. I was hoping for their crispy brussels sprouts but they do not serve for brunch/lunch so had to go with ole faithful "The Scotch Egg". If you have never had one you should definitely try it and the mustard sauce is amazing with it. Unfortunately for you reading this, I didn't get a picture because I devoured that thing the second my plate hit the table!!! For my main meal I went with the corned beef reuben which you can see in the picture just looks thrown together on the plate (very unappealing). The corned beef was a bit dry and tough, the "special sauce" was non existent and couldn't even taste. The best part about a reuben is the crisp buttery rye bread but with this sandwich it sadly was not toasted at all which really takes away from the flavor as well. The chips were just your standard frozen bits but add some salt and ketchup, you're good to go. To top off I went with the crème brûlée for dessert which is always a winner. I will more than likely return as I do enjoy the restaurant and hope that my next experience is a bit more enjoyable. read more

We made a reservation at Bog & Barley for St Patrick's day! The restaurant was extremely busy, but we were seated quickly. Our waiter, Jay was great! He made sure we were taken care of and got everything we needed. He also had great recommendations for drinks. We started off with the Pimento Cheese Toasty, it was to die for. I would 100% order this again. Their Wedge salad is one of my favorites in all of Memphis, the perfect combination. The Burger with the secret sauce is chefs kiss especially paired with their fries. Even though it was crowded, the environment was great. They had live music but it was the perfect amount of volume. We were still able to have conversations and enjoy the band! They also could make any beer green. We will be back and maybe even again next St. Paddy's day! read more

Absolutely an outstanding Irish Pub. We were here for the FedEx Championship we need to kill a few hours. While we only stopped for drink killing time before the airport it made me sad knowing we should have come here the days prior. Seeing the food that came it look incredible as was the service. I dropped by here for a late lunch. My delicious meal consisted of Scotch Eggs, Roasted Beet Salad, Irish Chicken Curry, and Guinness 0 (zero). I was seated almost immediately, and given an iced water to drink. My nonalcoholic beer from the bar arrived about ten minutes later. The delay was why I declined two separate offers for a refill. There were no patrons sitting at the bar. I'm unsure if they even had a bartender on duty. The first course of my meal arrived about fifteen minutes after I was seated. The pacing was spot on for my other two courses. I was checked on by my waiter at acceptably intermittent intervals. (I'm also thinking that my waiter had other duties, such as checking-in patrons at the front entrance, perhaps.) It's nice that this place still offers nonalcoholic beer. They even applied a decorative feature onto the foam of my Guinness. It was a nice touch. Four stars. I especially recommend the new menu item: Roasted Beet Salad. Best Thanksgiving ever?? Fantastic Facility!! Gorgeous woodwork, super high ceilings, second floor, just an incredible build out, must've cost a fortune! Service could not have been better! You can tell the servers were raised right! We had the artichoke and an Irish bread plate appetizers. The artichoke was exceptional! We had a variety of meals, hamburger with duck fat chips, Thanksgiving turkey dinner, fish and chips.... All were great. Finished up with chocolate cake with ice cream and sticky toffee pudding.... What can I say? I was truly pleasantly surprised by my experience at Bog & Barley. From the moment I walked in, the aesthetics alone set the tone--simply beautiful. The restaurant is filled with rich mahogany wood, imported from Ireland, and the intricate carvings and overall architecture are absolutely stunning. I arrived around 8 PM, a busy dinner hour, and was quoted a 10-minute wait that ended up being about 30 minutes. No big deal--I grabbed a couple of beers at the bar and caught some of the Memphis Grizzlies game while waiting. We were eventually seated at high-top tables along the main aisle near the entrance. At first, I wasn't sure I'd like those seats, but they turned out to be surprisingly comfortable, and with TVs on every wall, it was easy to keep up with the game. For dinner, I ordered the lamb meatloaf with mashed potatoes, peas, and carrots, plus a side of asparagus. I had never tried lamb meatloaf before, but it was incredibly delicious. Honestly, everything we had was great. Bog & Barley is definitely a spot I'd be proud to bring anyone--one of the standout restaurants Memphis has to offer. read more

I know I might get some backlash for this but this place is Trash Can Water! I ended up here with my mother in law for her birthday. I ordered the fish and chips playing it safe and for almost 30 bucks it came with 2 pieces of fish and a splash of French fries. My uncle also ordered the same as me and we both where like Dam did we order a kids meal. The service was fine tho and its a cool atmosphere if you into Irish Pub but everybody food was not up to par with Pics or word or mouth my mother in law heard. read more

*this is my second review of this restaurant* I almost rated this review 1 star per shrimp in the shrimp cocktail appetizer I would like to begin this review by saying when I order a shrimp cocktail appetizer I am expecting multiple shrimp even Kroger gives you like 30 shrimp in your cocktail I was presented with five they were not jumbo sized. They were regular sized shrimp. I was also presented with a gravy boat sized helping of dip for which I do not know how I was supposed to use all of this dip with only five shrimp in the appetizer. I did enjoy every bite of shrimp but the ratio of the appetizer while sharing with my husband was 2.5 shrimp a piece. We also ate the garnish because we were so hungry. I hope it was lettuce and not parsley lol. As we moved on with our courses, my husband enjoyed two Guinness, one had a snowflake stamp. The other was bald. I enjoyed two very heavily poured mule type drinks. They were absolutely delicious. Again, I ordered the bangers and mash while my husband ordered a ribeye with the crispiest brussels sprouts you've ever seen in your life. Every single thing we ate, tasted like it was delivered straight from the gods. The chocolate cake was absolutely divine, but was about the size that you would think would be served in munchkin land. The taste was great. Would it deter me from coming again and ordering exactly the same thing? No it would not. Would I like the slice of cake to be bigger?absolutely. Would I appreciate at least three shrimp per person at the table? Yes I would. Do I have a single complaint about the flavor of the food? Absolutely not. I hope this review helps you to understand what a great time we had while wishing we had just a little bit more. We had a reservation booked on OpenTable and seated upstairs in the bar area totally alone. It was nice and private however, we did not have a great view of the rest of the restaurant. That being said, we were treated very attentively by our servers, which were at the upstairs bartenders. Zero complaints about service we will absolutely be back. The only thing that would've made this dinner better would be as stated previously more shrimp and a win for the Arkansas Razorbacks--having to sit directly next to the TV while they were completely slaughtered by Missouri put a slight damper on the night. read more

Solid location and the usual level of food from this group. The scotch egg is consistent and fairly authentic. They get the bright yellow yolk on it perfectly. Not the usual outcome when a kitchen that doesn't know how a scotch egg is done takes a swing at it. My friend had been bragging about the steak being one of the best steaks he has had in Memphis. Blah Blah Blah. Yall the steak was cooked perfect. We both ordered our steaks medium. They got it right, EXCEPT they didn't add anything seasoning. Like none at all. The steak had literally no flavor. Not even a pinch of salt. I was like this is not it. Even my friend was like I'm so sorry because it usually hits. He said this was his third time ordering steak but this was the first time it had no flavor. So needless to say my first experience was blah. I'm willing to give them another chance because Cassie the General Manager was soooo sweet. She came over and greeted us at the bar and actually held a very nice conversation. Our bartender was amazing as well. This place is amazing. The staff, service, ambiance, food. It's fantastic from top to bottom. I got the shepherds pie. It was very tasty. Last time, I got the porterhouse pork chop, which was divine. If ya want fancy and delicious , the pork chop wins. If ya want traditional Irish pub fare, the shepherds pie will serve you well. Great bar with a nice selection of wine and beer. The desserts. Oh my. So, we have tried them all here. (Literally). I give the top spot to the bread pudding followed by the Guinness chocolate cake. But they are all great. My least favorite is the lemon cake. I was mostly trying to see some high school classmates -- one that I had not seen in over 15 years -- when I visited this really nice restaurant. My friend that lives in the Memphis area suggested this place and it did not leave us disappointed. It was just all around great -- the atmosphere, the food, and the drinks. It was so much fun seeing by childhood buddies over some really delicious food. The cream of cauliflower soup was very good as was the chicken sandwich and fries I chose to complete the meal. I also tried the roasted brussels sprouts and loved them. The service was fantastic. Our server turned out to be from a town near my home town in Arkansas and we talked about how the towns have changed. It just turned out to be a delightfully great lunch! read more

Went to Bog & Barley for the first time this week. I had heard great things about it. My friend and I were immediately impressed by the beautiful decor and excellent service. But I hate to say that I was disappointed with my meal. I had the Shepherds Pie. Maybe I don't know authentic Irish Shepherds Pie but this dish was 1/3 meat and at least 2/3 mashed potatoes. The menu said it contained root vegetables and peas. I search for the veggies. I never saw a pea and finally found a couple of small (1/4 inch) pieces of some veggie. I will say that my friend's Roasted Scottish Salmon with barley risotto was excellent. One hit and one miss. Because of the environment, I'll probably give it another try with different dishes. read more

I'd put six stars if I could!! The ambience is very nice, they have an amazing bar featured prominently that is a work of art in my worthless opinion. I also very much liked all the bookshelves with, well, books but also bric-a-brac. We had a reservation for 5pm on a Friday night which we probably didn't need but we weren't sure what to expect. I will tell you this place was fancier than I expected. It wasn't snobby or hoity toity or anything, I was just expecting an Irish pub type place but this more than that. I had salmon with risotto. The salmon was good but the risotto was exceptional!! One companion had the pork porterhouse which was very good and we shared a side dish of the Brussels sprouts which were also very very good!! They came with a yogurt based sauce with thyme and coriander I think and also currants. Really good!! One other young man companion had the cheeseburger and fries. He said they were very good. For dessert we got an Irish crème cheesecake, a Guinness chocolate cake, and a lemon cake. All three were very good. The lemon cake was very light and soft it was almost like a custard. read more

Went for drinks, good and cocktails with friends over the holidays. We had a wonderful time catching up and enjoying adult beverages. It was so great to see friends and family. The restaurant was decorated with Christmas decor. I love the vibe of this place. It is so pretty on the inside with natural wood and lighting. We sat upstairs in a nook which fit our party perfectly. You could see the downstairs and enjoy people watching or sports on the tv near us. Our waiter/server was Caleb I believe. He was so nice and provided excellent service for our large party of 15. I asked for appetizer recommendations and I ordered the asparagus. That dish was simply delicious. It was a bed of asparagus that was buttered. The sauce was made of sour cream and possibly mayonnaise with chives and other great seasonings. It was very very decadent but very good. I really enjoyed it because my plate was a happy and clean. I also ordered the Irish Soda bread that is not on the menu. Always very soft on the inside and crusty on the outside. So much better than Captain D's. That's a joke. Doesn't even compare. I've had the fish twice and oh my god it is so good. The breading. The sauce. And where else can you drink a Kilkenny? Simply amazing. The second time I tried the duck fat fries. I've cooked potatoes in duck fat that I've rendered myself and duck fat is the best. These fries however were soft and sort of soggy. Fries always have to be cooked twice. There's no shortcuts on that. You have to soak some of the starch out, fry them and pull them out and then fry them again. That's why all store bought fries are already cooked. They should use the duck fat the second time. Anyway, they can cook their fish better than me but the fries need improvement. read more

Bog & Barley is the spot to hang out when in Germantown. With plenty of seating, large parties can come in for dinner and catch up with friends and family over a drink and watch the game. The menu is extensive, offering appetizers, salads, seafood and British fare. Isaac, our server, and other waitstaffs are extremely friendly and helpful. Excellent service. The desserts read really delicious with the Irish coffee and cream ingredient, but tasted quite mediocre. I'd skip on dessert next time, but definitely will come back to try other entrees whenever in Germantown. read more

Our waitress was the best!!! She offered suggestions subtly with personal experience. Food was excellent: I had corned beef and oh my goodness it left me wishing I could hold the entire serving. Environment was a bit cool for me but that shouldn't deter anyone from popping in!! We'll return when in the area. read more
