The facilities are kept pretty neat and clean, so there isn't very much negative to say about this community centre. I do wish that there was more natural light, but it is only a minor quibble. Overall this is a pretty great community Centre with a lot of the facilities needed to keep everyone active and is a joy to visit.

Sleepy hollow, this is it!…read more Elgin West Community Centre is a sleepy recreational space in Richmond Hill. I find many older public spaces here are limited in features. This one has a large pool, and a slew of multi-purpose rooms for both parties and sports activities but that's about it. There's a small playground and a greenway walk in the back. It shows signs of its age having opened in 2000 and doesn't appear to attract a large number of residents due to its limited use. It was neat to see they had pickleball going on, but it was limited to only 6 spots and apparently drop-in has no spots available because all were available to be booked at 7am on Monday mornings. Many newer community spaces have libraries or ice rinks and larger sports fields. There's sign out front that this spot recently received an upgrade for lighting but that's about it. Skip it or hit it? If you have a booked itinerary or party here great, otherwise I wouldn't go out of our way to visit again.

Unfortunately, the swim lessons aren't great. Some of the coaches are really good, but we've had two out of four now that were quite inattentive throughout the class, only seeming able to pay attention to one child at a time, if any at all. Too much time is spent with their backs to the kids or gazing off into space. When your kid doesn't know how to swim at all, it isn't much fun to be worrying about them during these classes. We have not experienced this at the two other public pools were we have had lessons in the past. For a lot of classes there is a volunteer helper. This seems to help a lot, although I am noticing that as the classes carry on the helper picks up on the behaviour of the coach and also becomes focused only on the child they are specifically working with and ignoring what's going on with the rest. At my 3 year old daughter's last lesson, she started floating away in her life jacket and was panicking and crying. The teacher never did notice, even after this had gone on for a minute and all of the parents on the viewing deck were commenting and worrying, at which point I made my way from the viewing are to rescue her. Now my previously fearless daughter refuses to go back for lessons, and because it happened mid-session, they won't let her switch to a better teacher. It's too bad. I know this place thinks I'm nuts because i complained with the first teacher, but I was never worried about my child's safety at any other pool before now.

The community center was big and included many different sports, even the hockey game. There was a separate building for Tennis too. There were 2 big swimming pools. One for adults and one for kids. The kids pool is warmer than the adult one. There is a massage pool on the side corner. Parent can view onsite. We live a bit far away, but the schedule for parent and tod is pretty good here. As soon as I scanned my barcode, the alarms went off telling David the manager who was there that morning to inform me that my membership was not good at his club. Interestingly, even though my membership was not valid at his club, David was able to look at my membership profile and see that I am a longtime LA Fitness member and was able to allow me to workout at his club. This Markham club was comparable to the Diamond Bar, California club that I normally workout at. LA Fitness considers this club a Premier Plus Club...whatever that means. My regular premiere club and this club were basically the same, except mine in California provides towels for me. It was less fancy than their Signature Club in Irvine, CA, where their headquarters are at. They had treadmills and ellipticals that were equipped with a TV screen for you to watch. They had free weights and machines. Most of the equipment worked, not like at some of the other clubs I've been to. The club seemed clean. Paper towels and sanitizer were available. No towel service at this club. The parking lot was adequate. I was able to find a spot. It's a good LA Fitness gym. I still don't know what a premier plus club is. It sounds good, but, it is no different from a regular premier club in the USA. Thank you David for letting me get my work out in.

There are no salepersons! no one will try to sell you any personal training packages, fitness assessment, peronalized fitness programs. They do provides them if that's what you needs. There are no initial fees, membership promotions on the radio, the prices are the same year round unless you want to join the 3 months summer membership which is at a discounted rate. All the rates/fees are posted so there are no hidden fees. Memberships includes: A comprehensive fitness appraisal and counselling session A personalized exercise program Supervision by highly knowledgeable fitness professionals Aerobic classes townwide Use of all Town-owned pools, including Aquafit, lane swim and recreation swim Use of Thornhill and Centennial Fitness Centres The equipment room is nice and open with big floor to ceiling windows. The equipments are clean and up to date. There is at least 2 fitness trainers supervising and they are more than happy to show you how to use the equipments or the machines. The changeroom has 4 showers, a sauna, a whirlpool and tons of day lockers for use. And the use of town wide swimming pools for lane/recreation swim and aquafit classes is a plus! All you need is to flash your membership card and you get in for free! The only thing is the fitness classes, you do need to enroll online every terms. So I ended up waking up at 6:30 AM to register in order to get in some of the classes! Fitness members are put on waitlist if not enough non members are enrolling then members got a spot. I usually have no problems getting into the classes I want because they are mostly non prime time classes! The monthly fees are charged every month to my credit card around ($43) and you do need to renewal every year if you do want to continue with your membership. There are specials for seniors, full time students and financial aids are available with proof of income.

The organic nature this rink takes on, slight incline from the entrance to the natural obstacle course of bumps adds to the overall feel when enjoying the fresh air as you are doing laps and hit the unsuspecting speed bump to wake you up a bit. This place has swimming pool on 1 side with slide . It is a smaller pool compare to standard pool size. It is always busy. The good part is it has jacuzzi and sauna and not all city community Center has this facility. It also has indoor skating rink. Outdoor also has a rink for skateboard. There is parking . Although it cannot be compare to be as nice as the newly built community Center, it has quite unique facilities. With city has new program for gym membership , the membership is apply to most of the community Center include this one. I pay around $90 for 3 months. Good deal

I'm a swimmer, so I can't say much about the rest of the building but I will focus on the pool…read more The pool is a standard 25 meter pool, with a slide, a wheel chair ramp and a smaller shallow section. I go mainly for lap swims, and have found it often very busy. The fast lane is one single lane, medium a double and the slow lane another single lane (4 total). The fast lane tends to get busy quick, and not always the most generous or co-operative people swimming. I find that the morning swims are a bit less congested, and by the evening swims (especially in summer) the pool is quite cloudy and very busy. Not much else in the area for lap-swimming unless you want to get a membership at the YMCA (at bayview and sheppard). So I'd recommend it solely on that basis. If the location makes sense, I'd recommend checking out the 50m Douglas Snow Aquatic Centre at Sheppard and Yonge. It's in a fairly good location - mainly if you can drive. Getting there by bus is difficult (I'd recommend McNicoll bus over Leslie for frequency) Hope this helps!

Imho, it's a great, clean, super thought thru gym, everything from changing rooms to the pool is executed with much thought, which I can't help but enjoy. The staff here is amazingly friendly and management really listens to member's suggestions. I will not be parting with my membership even if I were to move to Ottawa, seriously!
