    I came for the baharat.
    Janet M.

This market is very close to my new place. Ever since my fav schwarma food truck closed ( RIP Cedars) we have been hunting for the right middle eastern pickles. They are so good! Then a man I follow on Facebook shared his yummy looking soup recipe with Baharat, onions, carrots, potatoes, and meatballs made with ground meat and rice in a spicy tomato broth and I knew I had to make an effort to come in here so I could make the soup myself. The parking lot is dicey. The market was busy. It is a little dark. Aisles were marked clearly I found one marked " pickles." Yay! My minion was antsy so I didn't browse as much as I wanted. I found the Baharat, turmeric, and a big jar of pickles. They bake bread in house and i bought a pile of great big flatbread. I have no idea how much they cost. I think there are 6 for $6. Maybe? They are enormous. We ate some tonight with spinach dip and tomorrow we will have some rolled up with hummus, avocado, feta, pickles and salad greens and possibly chicken. My younger minion said the bread is like Lembas, Elvish waybread from Lord of the Rings. " One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man." It is so true! And yes it is a little charred but I think it is supposed to be. We really like it. My middle eastern friend said we should eat it with labneh so we will hafta go back and get some. This store made me like my new neighborhood a bit more.

    Delicious bread

I stumbled onto this Middle Eastern grocery store, and I was not disappointed. They made Persian bread which you can see in the picture that I posted. That was warm and delicious. I found lots of seasonings that I couldn't find a regular supermarket. Definitely going back.

    Burned Bread!

Burnt bread hidden in sealed bag. I bought a bag of nan bread that was baked in their bakery. There was a few of bread completely burnt, not edible at all and hidden among a bunch sealed in a bag. It is not a big deal money wise because the hall bag costs about $10 but, burnt bread is harmful to your health and why it was hidden among the other bread? SEE IMAGES

Inside the Bazaar Food Market you will find outstanding freshly prepared flat bread. For the cost, taste and texture, Bazaar Food Market's fresh baked flat-bread / nan / roti is the best available in the greater Portland area; maybe even the west coast! For $5 you get 5 large pieces (16-18 inches). This bread is a great base for everything from alu-khobi (potatoes and cauliflower) to peanut-butter and jelly...or just plain! Try and resist the smell of this fresh baked flat bread on the drive home! You must agree, there is no better locally prepared flat bread in the greater Portland area for freshness, flavor, cost or service; enjoy! kha ishtya walare

This is a Pakistani, Indian and Mediterranean market with a decent selection for the area. One of the first things you'll notice when entering the store is the smell of fresh baked bread. In the very front of the store there is an oven and they're baking fresh bread that tastes great! Make sure you pick some up to take home with you! They also have bread in the back of the store so if you are looking for lavash, pita or other breads check out their selection. Some of it is refrigerated and some is not. As you walk through the store you'll notice that there are a lot of empty spaces on the shelves, but you'll probably find what you need if you're looking for a fairly common item. There were several things I was looking for that I didn't find but I found some substitutions so it worked out fine. I have stopped here several times to pick up some Sadaf spices since they have most of what I would need. Their prices on spices are much better than many of the supermarkets in the area so stock up while you're here. I actually prefer the taste of most of the Sadaf dried spices over many of the brands in Safeway or Fred Meyers. There is a meat counter In the very back of the store and there were several people in line waiting. There is also a small amount of dairy products available. They had large bags of different types of lentils and many types of canned veggies. They also had a large selection of Shan Pakistani spice mixes in boxes. They are pretty good and as good as many Indian spice mixes. I always enjoy checking out the tea selection in any market and picked up a box of black tea. I did wish they had a larger selection of tea because I was looking for black jasmine tea and they didn't have any while I was there. The owner was very friendly and helpful and when I couldn't find what I was looking for he helped me to choose a substitution that worked just as good!

Let me start by saying I didn't take pictures. For anyone who reads my reviews, that's a big part…read moreof them: ALL THE PICTURES. Presentation, portions, half eaten, etc... but I didn't. Because the food was so damn good. Look - I'm going to start off by saying I grew up practically on The Hill. Out here, you'll have to Google it (make sure to add 'RI' to the search or you'll get some political BS), but back east, "alls you's have ta say" was those two words and anyone would know you knew your Italian, food and otherwise. There isn't anything on this coast that vaguely compares to The Hill's food, but walking into and biting out of Geraldi's was having a little piece of home. There's this little shop in the old town where the owner knew your voice when you called to order... you'd walk in, and you heard "hey cousin!" whether you were or not, and that's the vibe you get from Geraldi's. The food is much the same - you get something that looks like Nonna was at the range all day with her sauce (it's not gravy - no meat) and you came home looking like you haven't eaten in weeks: "I'm gonna fatten you up before you leave" and you walked out the door with a sub (sandwich, that is - not a submarine) that weighed the same as a newborn. We got three of those babies: a Chicago Beef (seal of approval from the orderer - only 'complaint' was that they had to eat it all in one day because the bread was quote too soggy to make it to lunch the next day - travesty), an Italian sausage (just as delicious when 1/2 was reheated the next day) and a Chicken Parmeroni (I thought somehow even better when 1/2 was reheated the next day) and I could have absolutely gone back the next day if it weren't for A. the leftovers 2/3 of us had and B. the meal planning we'd done for the week. I also grabbed a side of giardiniera because I will get it anytime I see it available and I inhaled it - I need to know if I can by it by the vat instead of the side cups because it too was similar to what I can find at home (about practically nowhere out here) and amazing!! I'm still upset I didn't take pictures though!

I started with the Spicy Geraldi, which is normally cold - but you can get it hot - highly recommended! It was toasty and amazing! Extremely Unprofessional Behavior at the Poke Counter…read more Today my friend and I drove to Uwajimaya specifically to buy fresh poke, which we usually enjoy here. When we arrived at the poke bowl service counter, we were standing in front of the menu screens trying to decide what to order. We were not in line yet, because we were still looking at the options and deciding. We had only been standing there for less than three minutes. At the time, there was an Asian male employee helping another customer. After that customer finished ordering, another male employee (tall with long hair) gestured toward me and asked if I was ready to order. I said, "Can I get a mini bowl please?" Instead of confirming my order, he immediately asked whether my friend wanted the same thing. My friend was still deciding and had not said she was ordering yet, so I politely replied that she wasn't sure yet, but I was ready to order mine. The employee then shook his head and slammed the rice container, which completely surprised me. The gesture and attitude felt very disrespectful and unnecessarily aggressive toward a customer. For context, I work in the food service industry myself, so I understand that things can get busy. However, at that moment there were no other customers waiting behind us, so the pressure and frustration displayed by this employee felt very inappropriate. Because of how uncomfortable the interaction felt, I told him that it was okay and that I would not order anymore. My friend also said it was okay and that we didn't want anything anymore. Instead of simply letting us go, the employee shouted loudly across the counter, saying "Come back, come back! What do you want? Come back!" while waving his hand at us as if we had to beg for him to serve us. We had done nothing wrong--we were simply looking at the menu and politely asked for a mini bowl. The experience left us feeling confused, pressured, and honestly quite uncomfortable. We later reported the incident to the customer service counter. The female employee there (wearing glasses) listened and said she would forward the report to management. I have visited Uwajimaya many times and usually enjoy shopping here, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. I hope management addresses this situation and reminds staff that basic courtesy and patience are essential in customer service. After the incident, we decided not to order poke and only purchased a bottled tea before leaving. We ended up going to another Japanese restaurant nearby for food instead. I'm sharing this experience not to attack the business, but to provide honest feedback. Uwajimaya has always been a place we enjoy visiting, and we would be happy to come back in the future--once we feel confident that customers will not be treated this way again by this particular employee.
