Ok. I have a transmission issue…read more Brought it in to determine the root-cause. They found an old (not cleared) thermostat problem that I fixed a year ago. It didn't totally close, thus not allowing the Cat o get up to temperature quickly enough. I replaced for $25 and 45 minutes, easy. Check-engine light disappeared. But obviously the code locked in. And also they said I needed a full replacement transmission. Which I don't deny may be required. , sorta. I am 71 years old, done professional car work since 17. The ONLY reason I am not doing this myself is age. But that said, before I would tear down anything I would already know what component is bad. A valve, cam sensor, etc. My symptoms are of a valve-body stuck valve, causing the clutch(s) to not fully engage. Thus I wanted a more concise explanation for why I should give them $5,000 - $6,000 to replace the entire Xmission. I really should have had a talk with the trained mechanic that could go into depth about the detailed reason it is giving me problems. But I got the worker at the register explaining the estimate to me. I have 100% confidence she has ZERO true mechanical knowledge/training past what to say. She should have called the Tech to talk to me. Had that happened I would have set an appointment to have it replaced. But given the weak thermostat ($330) ghost diag, I had zero confidence about the rest of their work. Reminds me of "give a kid a hammer and everything looks like a nail".

The manager, Michael, allayed my apprehension, assuring me that since the transmission had to be pulled anyway, that everything would be inspected and repaired or replaced. They replaced two seals and had it running like NEW in one day. They could have replaced EVERY part in it and I really would have expected that. They are honest, almost to a fault, I'll NEVER take a transmission anywhere else. THERE ARE NO REBUILT TRANSMISSIONS AVAILABLE FOR A 1997 GEO PRIZM and I'm certain that Michael was aware of that little complication, yet he charged me a hundred dollars less than what he had quoted me. This ALONE should speak volumes about this company. If you're a veteran, be sure you tell Michael that up front.

I fully went to his shop and unloaded all the wife's stuff to get it ready to leave for him to get to it when he could. He quickly told me after a short ride that it wasn't my transmission causing the shifting problem. After 30 min of research he was able to determine that my rear tires were more worn than the front and caused the rear to spin faster. And because the wife had it in auto, the computer couldn't figure out if it needed to be in 4 dr or 2 dr. Now anybody could have told me that it was the trans and I would have agreed. The vehicle had tell tale signs and was at about that mileage. But Brock was an honest man. I offered to pay him for his time and help. He refused. I shook his hand and thanked him and went on my way. I write this review because Brocks Transmission will have all my business from now on. And I will tell any of my buds and extended family where they need to go for their transmission problems. There are still honest people left in this world. And Brocks Transmission is one of them.
