Good setting but notoriously bad food and weird service. Not on the level of State Road or Chilmark Tavern.

Have been here a few times over the years, and it has been re-done to be more cas, upscale-barn-esque. It still has one of the best sunset spots so reserve early to get a spot with a view during sunset. The menu seemed sparse, and nothing sounded major but let me tell you everything we had was really very good. 4 os us split 2 entrees & 3 apps. Lobster toast was amazeballs, cheeses, salad & oysters. Don't waste one of your meals here! Not only is it way overpriced but the chef seems like he has zero understanding of ingredients. It was a five course meal for $80 and 4 out of 5 were inedible. We had two kids meals and it was $40 for chicken nuggets and fries. The only reason I came here is because several years ago I remember a great environment and a wonderful meal. Don't be fooled. My daughter and stayed at the Inn for 3 nights. Yes, the grounds and view are very pretty, but I was sorely disappointed and will not return to lodge or eat. I figured for the price of 500.00 nightly! (ok it was high season) I was guaranteed a good experience. Cleanliness/service were the issues. We stayed in the 'Bridal Wreath' which I chose due to the touted sleeper sofa in addition to the bed. During check in I asked about linens for it etc.. this was actually the reply "I don't know anything about it- ask the housekeeper." I never saw a housekeeper. We ended up happy sharing the comfortable king size bed. I cannot imagine a new bride being content with this dirty room. The lampshades were stained, the sofa needed cleaning. The shower liner was disgusting and when I discovered the outdoor shower I gratefully never used the room's shower again. There was evidence of a leak with buckling up wallpaper over it. The floor clearly wasn't swept/vacuumed, so I couldn't stand to go barefoot in the room. The toilet ran all the time- I reported this after night 1- nothing was done. We ate breakfast there once. Breakfast was additional. Example: yogurt parfait $15 (discerning daughter not impressed). A lot can be forgiven if the coffee is excellent but of course it was not. Our table was sticky, the paper napkins were literally stuck. My omelet was delicious, but potatoes not. The lobby coffee/tea set up was not out for early risers and the cream curdled or no sugar etc... The worst was the beach shed. Old leaks and rot with moldy old wallpaper and webs. All the beach chairs had peeling paint. No chance you'd keep one of those in your trunk 'accidentally'. The employees were all very pleasant and polite excepting the one odd comment. You got a beach pass for lovely Lucy Vincent Beach and Squibnocket. This seems quite a pattern of poor management/oversight or staffing problems. I plan on returning to the Vineyard for a week or more next year. But I will spend my hard earned money elsewhere. We had many good meals elsewhere also. (Beach Road, State Road, Rosewater market, Behind the Bookstore, Chillmark General Store). read more

We just had dinner for 80$ per person on a Saturday night at the Beach Plum Inn. The food for that money was bland and wholly unimpressive. Although the venue itself is always beautiful and pleasant the cuisine doesn't come close to providing what it should for that kind of investment. It's been 4 years since I put down a review, so what was the catalyst? Here's a joint that's got some potential. Amazing location. Backed up with a nice room and rustic decor. Good looking, friendly staff. A simple menu with locally sourced ingredients. BYO policy, which is great for the pre-warned. So why three stars, when the food was also pretty good? First off, pricing is kind of crazy. Perhaps $120 chickens are normal in these parts, but if you're gonna charge that, at least kick in some imaginative sides. spuds and greens? Uh, ok. And secondly the service is sllllllow. Sure it was busy, and the staff were all very nice, but there was far more buzzing about than action. If you're drinking, bring an extra bottle. If you come here hungry, well, you've been warned! But hopefully these issues are fixable...it's a nice joint, with good food. three stars seems about right. read more

Ok, so I'm not the only one here not impressed with the Beach Plum inn restaurant. Let's get this out of the way...the view is spectacular. If you plan in coming, it is BYOB. Try and sit outside, enjoy the view, enjoy your wine. Def a place for a Facebook pic upload and check in if that is your thing. But don't show up too hungry or expect to leave with a full belly unless you plan on leaving your wallet. This place puts an emphasis on eating as local as possible, the farm to table thing. The portions here are small. I am NOT a big eater...as a matter of fact my husband and I always share an app & an entree when we eat out and it usually works out well for us. He spied a few entrees pass our table and said, you are on you own. We were with a group so we ordered 2 apps, some bread with rock salt and oil ($5) and a beet salad ( forgot price). The bread came- 2 slices the size of biscotti. The 5 of us shared that and each had 1-2 bites of the tiny beets. No other breads were offered to the table. Two of us had the chicken leg and thigh on a bed of sautéed corn and mushrooms., $36. One look at those little scrawny fowl legs and I thought, someone needs to feed their chickens more. We picked those bones clean and did our best to clear the rest of the plate, a little bread would have helped that effort. They were tasty but nothing over the top. I would have been happy to pay, say, $20 for that entree. At $36 I felt cheated. One of had tuna and one had bluefish. They were small portions, also in the upper $30 range. Not bad, just not...special. One person in our group wanted a vegetarian dish, none was offered, so the chef came out and personally discussed what he could do for her. That was a nice touch until he seemed a bit insulted that she didn't love peas. According to him they are the best thing in the world. Ok. She said she didn't love beans either. He replied "Are you SURE?" And she's like, I'm 48 yrs old. I'm pretty sure. So he said he would come up with something that she would enjoy. What she got was a sautéed plate of veggies on chick peas for $32. The plate size here is smaller than an average dinner plate, FYI. We had 2 bottles of white wine, we were charged 2 corking fees of $8 each. No one uncorked our bottles but us and we never saw the requested ice buckets either. Our waitress was dressed in jeans, tee shirt, with a piece of paper and a pen crammed in her back pocket for orders. She was perfectly pleasant but I felt like wait staff in a setting such as this charging this much should be dressed more appropriate. A white button down and khakis would suit the atmosphere and prices being charged yet still keep with the vineyard casual theme. The chocolate pie/ganache dessert was delicious. The blueberry pie thing was ordinary. The chocolate plate was fine. It was chocolate broken up on a slate with some honey and anemic looking berries. By the time we finished up, we were all laughing that we were hungry again! Our bill came to $262 before tip for 2 apps, 5 entrees, 3 desserts a $4 cup of decaf and 2 corking fees. We are not cheap people. We spend the summer here on MV. We know what to expect from the restaurants here and we know they have a short amount of time to make their bank for the year. We felt like we were being fleeced because of the location and view. My husband said "it's like the emperor's new clothes. No one wants to say that it isn't the best thing they have ever eaten because no one wants to admit they just paid THAT much for THAT little." (I just read another review that said the same thing! Ha!) We don't mind paying for an amazing dinner in a setting so gorgeous, but that dinner didn't cut it. Come one, Beach Plum, you can do better. The best setting on the vineyard! It was our last night and my parents anniversary so we wanted to do something special. This setting is impeccable! Chickens free roaming on the patio, beautiful view of menemshas famous light house gay head. At sunset everyone leaves their tables including wait staff and takes photos! We'd come back again, especially for a fine dining experience in the vineyard. My dad and I loved our chicken we orders and the gnocchi we shared. The Chicken was broiled so lightly crispy, they call it crispy on the menu but definitely not like fried chicken way healthier. The gnocchi wasn't traditionally made but was really good! It was filled with ricotta cheese so bigger than usual gnocchis and more pillowy than most, which I love lighter gnocchis. My mom thought her dish was sub par, not her favorite on the island but good for what she had. Fair review as she had been eating sea food all week and this was the only time she hadn't eaten sea food on the island. My only cons of this restaurant were the wait staff was super off. I don't comment often on wait staff, for the price you pay here they should train better. They were super slow, never even got water refills we asked for. Slow on all food entrees too it was like a two and a half hour dinner. When we first got there when it wasn't crowded they were attentive when they got crowded they got bad. My second negative comment is that there aren't sides that come with the entrees and our portions were pretty small. You'd leave hungry if you don't order an appetizer. read more

Aside from the beautiful setting, a horrible experience. Extremely limited menu-2 entree options unless yo wanted lamb or fluke "for two" for $70.00. Very small portions and very bland food. 5.00 for bread and 15.00 for lettuce. There were only two other app options-veggies (smallest portion imaginable!) and cheese. Been going here for 15 years and it continues to reach a new low waster mark every season. I'm done with this place until it is under new management and you should be too. The best thing about our dinner was the wine and we brought it! New chef, is a disaster in the making. The restaurantt was empty; empty at 7:30. Oysters in a watermelon melange were flavorless and pathetically tiny. The menue brags of only local island ingredients yet the beef was from Maine - so much for local. The fillet for two was half of the one our waitress rolled out to present prior to slicing. The veggies were unimpressive. Dessert was a peach pie with blueberry icecream that had melted into soggy mush. This is harsh, but I'd rather throw money out the car window along State Road then patronize this fiasco. read more

Dinner at the Beachplum Inn begins well as the grounds and restaurant are well designed and cared for and set in a beautiful part of the island. The restaurant is BYOB (although it does charge a corkage fee despite not serving any alcohol), and while the menu is short it offers good variety with fresh and local ingredients. Nevertheless, I cannot recommend the restaurant as none of the dishes particularly stood out and the portions were comically small. The night I ate the special was a $16 burratta with peas. I love burratta but the dish consisted of only a small scoop of cheese over bread with a few scattered whole pea pods on the side. For my "main" I had a $26 fettuccini with pork and rabbit which was tasty but was sized as a small appetizer. Perhaps the restaurant intends for you to order a "snack" (also known as bread), a pasta/salad, and an additional entree but at no point did the staff suggest this and the menu pricing discourages it. Bottom line: quality of the food not enough to outweigh minuscule portions. Skip it. read more

We were rushing to catch the sunset at Menemsha, lost a take out order at the nearby restaurant and learned the Bite was closed, so we were so thrilled to find the Beach Plum had a table right as the sun was setting on Saturday night in August. When we finally read the menu we were a bit surprised to see the fixed menu of $80 per person, but this is by far the most beautiful place to have dinner on the island. They accommodated our vegetarian daughter and never sneared at our dusty clothes right off the ferry. We started with two appetizers, poke and fish pate on perfect summer tomatoes, all with fresh garden herbs. Then a perfectly steamed sea bass, legumes and veggies, fruit sorbet to finish. All very simple but delicious. To spend such a wonderful evening on this gorgeous property eating beautifully prepared food is completely worth it if you want a complete MV island experience. read more

The Beach Plum Inn is one of MV's most beautiful spots! Our room (Iris) was spacious, bright, and very clean. (The bathroom, while large, had an oversized tub/shower that was a little difficult to navigate.) Breakfast on the patio was a beautiful way to start the day - delicious and unique options, and an amazing view. I doubt there is anywhere on the island that is accessable to the public that rivals that view. We were fortunate to be there for a pop-up dinner, and the food was one dish after another of sublime fresh seafood (oysters, stew, salad, etc.), again with that view! Menemsha is a wonderful place to stay, away from the tourist bustle, but close enough to beaches, bike path, and Alley's Store. I didn't want to leave, would go back in a heartbeat. read more

Great evening in a lovely setting. Staff quite nice. Menu limited, nothing spectacular but good. It's all about the view and setting. Note to bring wine as Chilnark is a dry town. Pricey. $120 whole chicken for 4 but more like 2-3. Blue fish artisanally prepared but a whopping $65. Sea bass decent. Beets and salad greens were awesome. Menu evolves with the seasons or what is available fresh from the farm or sea. Don't sweat the bread charge; at least the focaccia is good and the olive oil quite nice. All in all not to be missed. Oh, closed for lunch. A 6pm or 7pm seating preferred for the view either window side or on the patio( my pref). Will go again as a great experience on the whole. read more

We had our wedding here in late September and couldn't have been happier. David did a great job organizing the event in a relatively short amount of time (we only booked in late February), and even though it poured on the day of our wedding everything went seamlessly. We were especially impressed with the quality of food and the personal attention we were given by the head chef (James?). The Beach Plum is back! Last night was my first visit since last summer and the changes are vast. Locally sourced is a mainstay of this island, but chef Josh Aronie is creating with these resources in a fresh way. The oysters and citrus mignonette were a great start. Then the lamb shank - what can I say - polite company doesn't lick the bowl in public so, I controlled myself. Finally, blueberry donuts with malted milk anglaise is breakfast for dessert when paired with the 2xchocolate affogato. Also, and most importantly, the staff was outstanding! Sometimes it all about the food, sometimes it's all about the location. For the Beach Plum, it is about both. It's impossible to argue that this restaurant has one of the best views on the entire Vineyard. While we didn't have the best seat in the house (i think they reserve those for the Inn's guests), we still could see the sweeping shoreline and it wasn't too much to walk right outside for an even better view. I can go on about the view for hours since it was spectacular but let's talk about the food. Very limited menu but that is by design. The Beach Plum restaurant is the epitome of local cuisine. Every ingredient is locally sourced and all of our dishes truly tasted fresh. My wife loved the bread. It was homemade, thick and slightly gummy in the center. Served with whipped butter and sea salt. We both started out with the Farm Salad. I was expecting a larger salad for $13. It was fresh arugula, strawberries and feta cheese. Nothing to really write home about. My wife had the roasted bluefish and she said, (her words), " this might be the best piece of seafood I have ever had in this country". Bold statement. The fish was seasoned perfectly and that means a lot of salt and pepper. Don't kid yourself, skilled chefs use a lot of salt...and butter. The skin was crispy while the fish itself was still juicy and tender. Very nice dish. I had the vineyard sole and pardon the pun, but this fish has some serious soul. It was a perfect balance of flaky white sole, crispy on the edges with some light caramelization. The fish was juicy and hot. My dish was served warm and this was right on. It was served with summer vegetable soup with fresh peas, carrots and pea tendrils. Outstanding. We shared two side dishes. The potatoes of many layer and the salt roasted beets. We figured the potatoes would be cheesy, gooey and delish. 1 out of 3. They were delish but no cheese and no gooey goodness. It was like no other potato I have had. It was layers of thinly sliced potatoes, roasted garlic and caramelized onions. The deep, earthy favors did not disappoint. The beets were on another level all together. Golden beets roasted to perfection sprinkled with salt and topped with charred orange slices. The beets were still warm. I was so full at the end of the meal but I couldn't let those beets go to waste. We shared the desert of warm chocolate chip cookies and milk served in frosted glasses. It was a nice way to end the meal. While this is a rave review, the night was not picture perfect. I do have a few complaints. Even though this restaurant is a BYO, they charged a corking fee. To me, this is greedy, plain and simple. it is pure profit and paying customers shouldn't be charged this ridiculous fee. To make matters worse, I had to ask twice for a refill. Being charged a fee and having to ask for a refill really pissed me off. There was a lot of waitstaff plus 2 hostesses and half of them didn't seem to be paying attention. Our water was not refilled once, we had to ask for bread and then the wine situation. I won't let this lack of service ruin the dining experience but if the owners are reading, please talk to the staff and ditch the greedy corking fee. The food really was delicious I will always support chefs that source their ingredients locally. They had satellite radio playing in the background and we heard our wedding song plus a lot of other great songs. With that said, I recommend this restaurant. If you are familiar with the Inn there is something critical that you should know: Car passes to LVB and Squibnocket are no longer included in the rate. LVB is up to $85 and I think Squib is $65. The receptionist explained that the Town of Chilmark asked to take the passes away. This is an incredible shame as most people know that those are the best beaches on the entire island. Walk-on passes are included. However - it is difficult to get to either beach. The Inn will offer that you take the bikes but the up-island roads are not safe for novice cyclists. It would be ideal if the Inn offered a shuttle service a few times per day for guests. Or - they can even offer a service whereby, for a nominal charge, they have a shuttle service. When we arrived I was absolutely heartbroken to learn that I would not be sitting on LVB as I had been dreaming about all year. My stay otherwise was good. I booked a year in advance for Beach Plum (Morning Glory cottage) and, when we arrived, we were told that we were booked into a cottage on the Menemsha property. That was fine and actually worked out well for us since there was a wedding at the Inn that I heard other guests complaining about. But all told - the Inn could have done a much better job of sending an email about the room change, beach change, and options for getting to other beaches. As for the restaurant - the menu has changed over the years. We ordered a selection off the appetizer menu and were happy. The cheese plate offers local cheeses which were so tasty. We also got the razor clams which were grilled and delicious in the broth. Service at the restaurant, as always, was perfect. Max is the man to ask for. read more

Beach Plum is just a straight up beautiful place to stay. A surprising 35 minute drive from Edgartown, Beach Plum sits within easy walking distance of the entire Menemsha area, with ample beachfront and delicious fresh fish markets (Larsen's in particular). In addition, the inn itself is situated with a fantastic sprawl pattern, with its many small cottages being located around the central restaurant. This arrangement is perfect for large groups of associated guests who want to stay together and share common spaces, but still have their own private lodgings. The wedding weekend we attended here went off fantastically. If you can get past the general expense of traveling to Martha's Vineyard, the Beach Plum is a great spot! read more

BYOB this is on a dry part of the island so they do not serve alcohol but encourage you to bring your own. Good ambience - dimmed lights with candles - ocean view in the distance out of a wall of windows - rustic wood tables etc. The service was absolutely excellent and it made the restaurant feel very upscale. The food was good - portions of the entrees weren't huge but weren't tiny (I think it's probably best to start with a $5 "snack" aka appetizer then $12-15 salad then $32-33 entree). We just ordered entrees and dessert ($12) to share but weren't too hungry so it was perfect. But had we been hungry the meal would've been pricier plus the 20% (!) Martha's Vineyard food tax. UPDATE: Martha's Vineyard does not have a 20% food tax! What happened was that while we were dining at the Beach Plum Inn & Restaurant we purchased a $150 restaurant gift certificate as a gift for the people we were staying with on the island. The restaurant accidentally appears to have charged us tax on the gift card. We're following up with them to try to get the incorrectly withheld tax refunded. read more

I'm not sure how a place so obviously inspiring could be run by front of house management that exudes a continuous air of condescension and apathy. I was so disappointed with this restaurant. My husband took me for my birthday this week since we have never tried it and heard good things but this just was so opposite of my expectations. We drive up and park and there is no sign saying restaurant this way or anything. We timidly walk in hoping we are not walking into someones house! Not a great way to start. Once seated, we did not get a window seat so it was pretty hard to see the view. We were seated on the bench against the wall. It was so uncomfortable. I had to lean forward the whole time to not hurt my back on the lip on the wall. I ended up putting my elbows on the table half way through to balance myself. Ask for a window seat when making a reservation! We were shortly handed a clipboard with a menu printed on graph paper. There were 10 items on it and only 3 were entrees. We had to pay 5 dollars for bread!! That is awful for such a high priced restaurant. I got the "eggplant, tomatoes, pecorino" YES this is how it is stated on the menu. When I got the appetizer it was missing the pecorino! I mean they plainly state what is going to be in it by the menu and you miss one of the items?? how is this possible?? Out of the 3 entrees 2 of them were fish!!! Bluefish and Black Sea bass. These 2 fish my husband catches all the time on the island so we were so disappointed that that was all we could order!! I ended up getting the braised beef and my husband got the fish. Both were awful. We could of cooked the fish better. ALso it was sliced lengthwise and you only get half the fish!! For that much money, that is outrageous. My beef was overcooked and on both of our plates the kale was all stems. You are suppose to cut those off. IT was just a disgrace. I would expect a lot more out of a restaurant of this standard. BYOB is the best part of this restaurant. The view is nice if you actually get a seat that you can see it. We ate there this week and it was quite disappointing. Our mistake that we didn't read in advance that "chef DMFP" offers a prix fixe menu which, at $80pp, might have been fine but for what it turned out to be. On our night, dinner was "02552 Breakfast: island eggs, uncased lamb sausage, roesti." This dish was actually quite good. But what followed was five more protein dishes, including "02575 Ham & Cheese...02535 Crock Pot of island meats..."02539 Day of Sustainable Fish...02151 Duck Breast...and "13740 Onions for Dessert: bacon, marrow, cauliflower ice cream." We left before we reached the last dish as I was starting to feel slightly sick. Beyond the strange menu (what's with the #'s btw?), the outdoor tables were very dark so you couldn't see what you were eating. There was a lovely sunset as we arrived but a huge tree blocks it. Much to improve here...and I used to work there as a college-age waitress when it was under prior management and a very different experience. Wish the experience with my family had been better. Place is really expensive, which I don't mind if the food is good, but this place was a major disappointment. The amazing view has not changed but this is like a new restaurant with chef Nathan Gould and Chef Josh Aronie bringing a new, more approachable menu to the best location on the island. My wife and I had one of the best meals of our life last night there and the only problem was we couldn't decide which menu item to get. We have been going to the beach plum for years and it was always an experience but now the portions are larger, pricing is more reasonable and I believe quality improved. Congrats to the new team at beach plum as they have an exciting season to come. Anyone that has gone before and was disappointed you need to get back there as in my opinion it is the best the island has to offer. read more

I really do feel bad about this place. There was such a hype and my fiancé and I were so excited to visit this place for their "pop up ramen" night. We decided to bring my mother, and we arrived late but were seated right away with no trouble. Thank god we made that last minute reservation! It was nice to see a place that was actually busy on a Monday at 9pm and we were quickly offered some bread and water. Unfortunately that was the most receptive the waitress would ever be. She never asked for another drink order (which i suppose is forgivable since Chilmark is a dry town), she waited maybe ten to fifteen minutes to take our orders, and when she did, it was "what are you ordering," instead of "what may I get you this evening?" We chatted amongst ourselves for the normal amount of time that food takes to be made, but when the bowls were put down in front of us, the bus boy put the wrong dish in front of all three of us. Which isn't a problem, just a sign of a lack of communication. All the dishes looked tasty, although mine was missing something I had ordered, another sign of miscommunication. I waited for the waitress to come by to ask how everything was so I could mention the missing item. She never did, and I did see her walk by a number of times. This is why it's so important to stop and ask how everything was though, because shortly into our meals both my mother and I found tiny bits of plastic wrap in our soups. They were big enough to luckily be noticed before consumption, at least on my part. My mother swallowed hers. And she was fine, in fact I didn't even notice until I asked her if she had found any, but what if it had gotten stuck? It was simply unacceptable and inexcusable. It's a real shame, too, because the food was delicious and the portions were bigger, which I saw was a major problem before. The manager was the real saving grace here though. I brought the plastic to his attention and he comped all of our meals. I was impressed with that, as I had every intention of paying for my fiances meal since his had been unaffected by the plastic. But he insisted and it left me with at least a better taste in my mouth. For this reason I rated the restaurant with three stars because it takes a much higher level of respect for the customer to take a complaint about bad service and odd Ingredients and, instead of accusing us of possibly putting the plastic in the food ourselves or becoming irate and defending his establishment, he simply apologized, took care of everything, and was sincere. Sincerity goes a long way in my book. I'd say proceed with caution here, maybe try not to go on a super busy night? You can't be the view though, so go at sunset! read more

Dinner here last night was more than magical! We had the cheese plate and sea bass ceviche to start and they were both wonderful. For our main courses I had the pesto gnocchi and the other three people in my party all ordered the fried chicken. My gnocchi was so incredible I never wanted it to end. The gnocchi was light and pillowy and the pesto was just perfect. The fried chicken was also A+++ and we all couldn't decide what we loved more. For desert we shared the spiced donuts with popcorn ice cream and the blackberry sorbet. No surprise, they were both heavenly as well. Not only was the food and service amazing start to finish, but the view and ambiance were out of this world. It was truly one of the best dining experiences of my life! read more

My husband and I ate at the Beach Plum restaurant twice last week (June 12 & 13, 2013). The first night was our 30th wedding anniversary and still off season so the restaurant was not open that night. The wonderful new chef, Chris Fischer, offered to open the restaurant just for us for a private dinner! It was the most fabulous dining experience we have ever had! Let me first say that the restaurant has been completely renovated this year. It is now a farm to table concept. I know that's a big buzz phrase these days, but it truly is that. Chris' family owns and runs the nearby Beetlebung Farm and all of the produce is picked daily and served at the restaurant. The decor is farm table rustic. The ceiling is repurposed wide barn planks. The tables are built from what appears to be the same planks. There is one long farm table down the middle of the restaurant. The views of the gardens and Menemsha harbor are gorgeous. The food was absolutely fabulous. For our private dinner, Chris made a seven course menu: 1 Asparagus salad with carmelized onions and parsley 2 Arugula salad with fried with fried chick peas 3. Cavatelli pasta with chicken hearts 4. Fettucini pasta with pork belly, in a light cream sauce (we saw the pig being brought in as we arrived for dinner!) 5. Sole with cabbage and sugar snap peas, 6. Dessert was fromage blanc, honey, strawberry sauce and candied walnuts 7. Mast chocolate The second night we had: 1. Beet salad, my husband had razor clams 2. Raviolis in a light cream sauce 3. Braised pork shoulder with new potatoes, asparagus, and black lentils (from the same pig we saw brought in the day before). 4. Strawberry dessert 5. Mast chocolate Everything we ate was local from Martha's Vineyard, with the exception of the pig that came from Vermont. It was all so fresh and delicious. I had never eaten asparagus that was picked that same day! The menu is limited and changes daily because only ingredients that are available that day are used. Chris Fischer is an amazingly talented executive chef and his staff is also incredibly talented, hardworking, and nice, nice people. This is sure to be the hottest restaurant up island. read more

First, let me say I rarely complain about a meal, AND I NEVER HAVE WRITTEN A RESTAURANT ABOUT A MEAL, GOOD OR BAD. Let me also say that I write for four of us in our dinner party. On Tuesday, July 16, we were a party of six for a 7:30 pm. reservation. First, I was somewhat surprised that there were only three dinner entrees on the menu. However, I and a few others, opted for the clams, chorizos dish. Shortly after taking our orders, the waitress informed us that the kitchen was out of this entrée. It was early in the evening, and the kitchen was already out of one of the three entrees. I then ordered the lobster, pork shoulder dish, as did some of my friends. The less than bite sized piece of lobster was a joke. The pork shoulder, while of sufficient size and tasty, was stringy. The rest of the dish, basically vegetables, was okay. All for $38.00, a disaster. As a long time visitor to Martha's Vineyard, I appreciate that prices are high, but that if a meal is good, it is worth it. This was NOT!! I also was somewhat taken aback by the fact that no bread and/or butter and/or oil was offered. I was told later that there was a bread appetizer on the menu. I am sure it too was expensive. We did order two desserts. We brought three bottles of wine to the table. The bill for all of the above was around $300. I never saw the itemized bill, so I cannot comment on the various other costs. The past 2 years we dined here the meals were fantastic, easily 4+ stars. No such luck this year though. When we called for our reservation we were informed that it was the last night of service for the weekend, perfect right? Maybe they had something even more special planned for their patrons? Yeah, right. First of all, it was roasting inside, it was a very humid day and temperatures in the dining room had to have been up to 80. We heard a couple other tables complaining about it they opened the window near them, we had to open ours ourselves. I don't know what the deal was there if the AC was broken or what. By 8:00pm with a full house, they were out of three of the six entrees they had, leaving us to pair our 89 Latour with either the chicken, the sole, or the pasta. Great, we all chose the chicken. The carrot and asparagus was unseasoned, and had a skin so thick on the top I lifted it 3" off the bowl with my spoon. Probably plated 45 minutes before service. And could they maybe add a bit of garnish? Some goat cheese, creme fraiche, pumpkin seeds, a drizzle of oil, something (that may be nitpicky but keep in mind this is a special occasion place and the soup was $11). The caesar salad was probably one of the worst I've ever eaten, and I love a good fine dining caesar. The lettuce was composed of thinly sliced romaine hearts that had been sitting in dressing for probably a good half hour. The croutons were enormous and very difficult to eat. The dressing lacked any kind of punch and wanted salt. The single anchovy garnish justified the $11 cost. The chicken while flavorful was extremely dry and way past overcooked. The potatoes they served us were (with no hyperbole) the worst any of us have ever eaten in our lives. I would have killed for a day old microwaved McDonalds hash brown to sop up the jus. I can't even imagine how they were prepared. Just sloppily chop up a couple yellow skin potatoes, roast them for a couple hours without any fat or seasoning, and then reheat them several times throughout the night (week?), and serve them at room temperature, disgraceful. This was for a $36 chicken statler. I get it that there's a Martha's Vineyard tax that you pay anywhere you go on the Island, but I find that disgraceful. $10 more than the roast chicken at Hammersly's. And the fact that we were even EATING the chicken in the first place is ridiculous, out of the pork lobster and filet by 8:00? Talk about mailing it in and just cleaning out the pantry for the night. We were going back and forth about it but we finally decided to say something about how poor the food was. Our server and the hostess were both at least mildly incredulous, I think my favorite was our server telling us that the same chef has been here for 16 years. The hostess comped us our desserts and coffee (for some reason they weren't able to make cappuccino). I wish I remembered her wording exactly but it was something like "I wish you told us earlier but you guys ate most of it or I would have been able to do more for you". We didn't want free dessert, we didn't want a free meal we wanted special occasion food at special occasion prices that would pair with special occasion wine. They were obviously unprepared for service that night and probably should have just shut down the night before. I guess I should mention that our key lime pie was dished out of a sheet pan, the corner piece at that. Something you'd pay $1 for at a church fundraiser, must be the 1000% Martha's Vineyard tax at work. We're not sure if we'll be back for our annual wine weekend. State Road is a definite as they once again impressed, might be time to try out the Chillmark Tavern as another BYOB destination. read more

Went in with high hopes. Sorely disappointed. Food was mediocre, very limited menu - scup and razor clams were the only seafood available?! The service was really, really bad. Slow, inattentive, no salt/pepper on the table. Asking for ketchup (just because it is a $22 cheeseburger doesn't mean diners are not going to want ketchup) seemed a surprise to both waiters we asked, perhaps explaining the ten minute delay in the first one fulfilling the order - who I intercepted as I was on my way to the kitchen to ask a third person to please, please give me some ketchup. Thought I had to be on Candid Camera But the ghost of Art Linkletter did not show up and the joke was on us. I have never had a more pathetic excuse for a meal. Believe me there is no chef at the Beach Plum. The menu has only 3 entrees, the wait staff is pleasant but untrained, the portions are tiny, and the quality of the dishes is less than mediocre. 100 pound women left hungry. Really. The entrees were served on salad plates with no eye to attractive presentation and plenty of bare plate. I got the pork cavatelli. But there was no discernible pork. Half a can of Chef Boyardee would have been better and would not be $30+. For the lobster dish they must have searched high and low for the smallest lobsters. The tails were the size of shrimp. They claim to be supporting local farmers and fishermen. Well they can't be buying enough of anything to make a difference to those folks. When the food came the staff had no idea who had ordered what and kept setting the plates down haphazardly. Very much a scene from the Three Stooges. And the Stooges apparently rein in the kitchen as well. We were a party of 7 expecting a first class meal. We reside in NYC, Phili, Pittsburgh, and Charleston. We are happy to pay top dollar for a good meal. I worked in Food & Beverage for 5 years, including waiting at a top shelf restaurant. I had rigorous training. These folks have had none (not their fault...I felt so badly for them). A great restaurant leaves you full, but not stuffed, so I don't expect huge portions, but this was straight from a New Yorker cartoon. Run, do not walk from this excuse for a restaurant. They are banking on a nice view. But folks coming to MV are unlikely to get fleeced more than once. This was not an "off" night; from many other recent reviews this is consistent sub-mediocrity. $500 and we had to come home and prepare a follow up meal. So have lunch at the fish houses in Menemsha and then dine at a real restaurant like Atria in Edgartown. The Beach Plum will not survive without radical changes. So wait until the owners make them or go bankrupt. Then come back when someone who knows how to mange a restaurant is in charge. read more

Outstanding food, very fresh. Staff prepares food with great detail , and clearly takes pride in their food. Staff is as nice as can be and very respectful. Rooms are absolutely amazing. Very clean and well maintained. Staff goes above and beyond to make sure that you are comfortable. I highly recommend the food and staying at this Inn over night. We are mystified by most of the earlier reviews of this restaurant both on Yelp and on Tripadvisor. This is an excellent restaurant with a great atmosphere and not out of line with the prices of other excellent restaurants on Martha's Vineyard such as the Chilmark Tavern, State Road and Sweet Life Cafe. We live in NYC and have been to many restaurants there with about the same level of quality and price. We ate there on August 22nd. I have the menu in front of me. There are 5 entrees whose prices are $36, $38, $37, $65 for 2, $70 for 2. So the prices described by earlier reviewers seem wrong or at least out of date. We had 5 appetizers. Of those, 3 were superb, equal to the best: the grilled flatbreads with lentils and smoked bluefish, potted duck and beef with shaved radishes, cabbage and kohlrabi. The combination of superb ingredients, surprising flavors and textures speak to the inventiveness of the chef. And the greens with lemon and parmesan was delicious though not quite as interesting. These were good sized and none cost more than $18. The tuna crudo and lobster tail were good but not outstanding. The Focaccia was also very fresh and good. The chocolate tart was wondrous--very fresh, not too sweet and again a nice combination of textures and flavors with excellent pastry. The chocolate plate was good, with nice toasted almonds but the chunks of Mast Brothers chocolate, though delicious, seemed a bit hard--and in any case one wants more in a dessert than the ingredients for a dessert. The setting is gorgeous especially if you have a table near the windows. You see the sunset over Menemsha beach. The atmosphere is "country inn" with brown paper on the tables, shelves of books and a cute napkin idea: in the form of traditional dishtowels. We loved the feel of the place. Lively but not too noisy. I like the Chilmark Tavern and State Road a bit more but Beach Plum Inn is better than Sweet Life. Waitstaff charming. attentive and knowledgeable. We left happy. read more
