We're from the land of plenty aka Northern VA, the food is comparable to All American Restaurant chain. The steak was the star, the other entrees were fine but not spectacular. The short ribs tasted like pot roast and was oddly shredded- not a fan. Dessert was let down, crème brûlée was way too fudgy (no signature jiggle), carrot cake meh and truffle had no cake (just pudding). Seriously, Hire a new pastry chef. We actually visited twice during our vacation. The first time was on a Sunday because I wanted to try the crab cake sandwich, only to find out it isn't served on Sundays. We made a point to come back later in the week just to try it. On our first visit we sat outside, but the flies were relentless, so we chose to sit inside at the bar the second time. I ordered the Velvet cocktail (the first drink on the menu) for $18, and it was, without question, the worst cocktail I've ever had. It came in a tiny glass, and after one sip I couldn't drink another. I'll drink just about anything, but this was completely undrinkable. My husband agreed there was clearly something wrong with it. When I mentioned it, I was told it couldn't be removed from the bill, so I ended up paying $18 for a drink I couldn't even finish. That was extremely disappointing. Sunday brunch was much better. The crab lump Benedict was delicious, while the smash burger was just okay. The crab cake sandwich, unfortunately, was another letdown. It was mostly bun with a small crab cake and simply wasn't worth the market price. One other thing I didn't care for was the bathroom doors--you could clearly see the silhouette of the person inside, which didn't offer much privacy. Overall, I left disappointed. If I came back, it would only be for Sunday brunch. I'd definitely skip the Velvet cocktail and the crab cake sandwich. read more

She knew the menu well and was attentive to my parties needs. The crab cakes and fried rice was delicious. I recommend getting this along with the milk bread. We had a wonderful time with the girls on Wednesday night! We sat at the bar which was great, our bartender Becca was amazing, she gave us really great recommendations and was fun and so nice! We started with the oysters which were fabulous. Really fresh, not too salty and the oyster crackers and watermelon sauce that comes with them was surprisingly tasty. We had calamari, burrata and fried green tomatoes to share, and then went for the surf and turf. Everything tasted delicious. I can't believe I'm leaving this review because I have been a customer of the Beach Shop & Grill for many years- even way back when it was actually still a "grill" and you could get the best burgers and milkshakes! Over the years I've seen this place morph and become a whole new animal. I'm not opposed to change when it's needed, but whatever has happened to The Beach Shop Grill makes me sad. I was sad when the burgers and milkshakes went away, but the newer "nice" restaurant that it became was still really good. Prices rose, of course, but my meals were always amazing! Shrimp and grits was a MUST! And someone in our party always ordered them. I admit it's been a few years since I've been to Topsail, but coming here automatically meant a nice meal at The Beach Shop Grill! Oh goodness.. it's just NOT the same place anymore. First of all- the service was great. Staff was friendly, checked on us regularly, and the food came quickly. The ambience is very casual upscale, which is fine. But the food.. what has happened to the food?! Is it beautiful to look at- I suppose. But I don't EVER care about spending $30+ for an entree JUST for it to be "pretty." The Salmon my daughter ordered was cooked well, but the rest of her dish was just bland. And my shrimp and grits were the most disappointing thing of the night! Nothing like they used to be. The sauce was tasty and that's the only thing that made it half way edible for me. Grits were thick and sticky. The one piece of fried okra and the unusual mushroom on top were so tough they were hard to chew. The shrimp alone had no flavor. Thank god for the sauce! It pains me to leave a bad review ever. I had no issues with the service at all. But the prices, for my budget, were through the roof high. We ordered two orders of shrimp and grits, the salmon, and two glasses of wine and it was $150. (Plus tip) Portions were pretty small (as were the wine pours) Another thing- there was really no local seafood or catch on the menu. Lots of NONseafood and very little actual fish. On top of all that, we were there when the doors opened at 5pm and were unable to be seated because we didn't have a reservation. So we sat at the bar. I'm ok with that, but I was just really shocked by that- so if you decide to try it just beware and make a reservation. I so miss the casual nice restaurant with delicious food that the Beach Shop Grill used to be. I just felt like they are no longer catering to normal folks like me. I have no problem paying for a really good meal, but this was not that. I'm sorry Beach Shop Grill.. but I won't be back unless something changes "again" and the reviews of the food (and maybe the prices) gets way better. read more

I'm not a fan of the brunch menu. Ordered a BLT and the sandwich was very dry. It came with a tiny smear of mayo and enough avocado to leave a tiny green streak. Instead of romaine they use a ton of arugula. The fries were good. Ordered a watermelon margarita and it tasted nothing like watermelon. We paid $74 for two dry BLTs and 2 watermelon margaritas. My family has come to this place for decades while briefly driving to the south of the island from our rental up north. Maybe 10 years ago it got a much spruced-up interior! It might be the best restaurant on the island, although others pretend to be. With a big party for late-lunch (we did make a reservation, which is advised), we all got served quickly with nice various seafood sandwiches. And some local beers. I forgot to take any pictures except for the one beer. We had a big ol fun conversation. I was a little worried about having so many people (9) but it worked out fine. read more

Cute (on the smaller side, far from over commercialized, quaint) main commerce intersection on this more residential portion of the Island. Super convenient to where we stay "SEA VISTA MOTEL" which was built in the 1950's, post WW II. This area housed missle testing facilities just around or prior to that time period. One or more of the observation testing structures stand and or has been repurposed. One is not park of a motel. The other seems to be residential or office? Possibly more. The food, drink and atmosphere have always been positive. Indoor and outside options. Also an adjoining shop. Walking distance to ice cream, cofffee, putt putt and just businesses that make beaching so ahhhhh good. read more

This was the only place I saw around that took reservations for brunch so I booked it for a girls brunch while my friends and I were in Topsail. Upscale for the beach but a lovely environment. Our server was sweet and attentive. Fun little gift shop next door if you had to wait. I ordered the Farmhouse omelette, friends ordered chicken and waffles and the eggs Benedict. Presentation was lovely. Food was good. Only negative was refusal to split the check. I can understand credit card charges for a small charge but these were not. We started with few drinks which were all so tasty and great. I had the Cesar to start which was excellent and refreshing and amazing. We had the short rib over gnocchi and amazing flavor we wanted to lick the bowl. I had the pork chop which is my favorite to get especially when a restaurant knows how to make a pork chop. Such a good decision cooked to perfect medium. With a sweet but not too sweet plum sauce. Over grits and greens. I devoured that. I rarely leave negative reviews, but unfortunately our recent visit to Beach Shop and Grill left much to be desired. We started with the shrimp salad and crudo, along with two cocktails. The shrimp salad was supposed to include artichoke and goat cheese -- neither of which were present -- and it was poorly dressed. The crudo came in a shockingly small portion, and the accompanying straw-like crisps were completely stale. We politely brought our concerns to the attention of our waitress, who apologized and said the manager would be right over and that we'd be receiving a full refund. Unfortunately, the manager never came to our table and only removed the crudo from our bill. We weren't trying to make a scene or ask for something unreasonable -- we simply hoped the restaurant would take a moment to address the situation and make it right. We had intended to stay for entrées, but given the quality of the food and the surprisingly high prices, we decided to leave and dine elsewhere. What's most frustrating is that we gave the restaurant a fair chance to make things right, and they chose not to. Also worth noting: we did eat most of the shrimp salad only because it took over 20 minutes for anyone to check on us, and my friend is diabetic -- she needed something to stabilize her blood sugar. We barely touched the crudo. Unfortunately, this experience was disappointing from both a food and service standpoint. I won't be returning. read more

Our bartender/waitress--Angela or Alicia (I wish I could remember!)--was fantastic and full of great suggestions. We had some rare free time on Sunday and went in search of brunch. This is a place we have driven past a lot without knowing it was a great restaurant! We had sticky buns, Eggs Benedict and Shrimp & Grits. My shrimp and grits were great. My wife was a little disappointed on the eggs Benedict. She said it needed salt, the eggs were a little under and the brown butter hollendaise sauce was not as good as the regular version. The restaurant is nice inside. The service was good. The portions were micro small. I ordered the shrimp burger and received a large bun with lettuce, a good slice of tomato and 5 small shrimp. I had several bites with no shrimp at all in them. My wife ordered the fish tacos and received 2 tacos with 1 tiny piece of Mahi on each one. I'm talking small pieces of fish. We each laughed when the server set our plates on the table. We were very disappointed with our meals and will not be returning. I do not recommend this restaurant. We tried coming during the summer but walk-ins had a 4hr wait. Made reservations and tried again. Menu changes weekly. It's by the beach, take a stroll. Public access right there. Has an amazing outside bar and a store attached. Waitstaff was amazing- we had Sam and McKenzie - Don't be afraid to ask for something you MAY have seen looking at the website - they have and "off menu" No key lime pie The drinks were amazing!!!! Ridleys relief and Bourbon orchard. I loved the Ridleys the most. Hope to visit again before we leave the area. It is $$$$$$$$$$ So if you go, prepare for that. It is worth it. read more

Delicious stop when in Topsail! We went for a bachelorette and they did a great job accommodating our party if 11. While we waited for our table we were able to stop at the bar for cocktails and shopped the fun home goods boutique attached to the restaurant. Our server did a great job and took the time to speak to each side of the table so everyone could hear her. There were multiple staff throughout the meal helping with our drink orders and busing. For food we got a variety of small plates that we loved. For our entrees most got the burger, snapper, shrimp and grits or steak. The burger was insanely yummy and insanely rich. Definitely recommend splitting it. Between the fondue and lobster it'll have you ready for a good snooze when you get home. The sauce on the shrimp and grits was so unique and will definitely be my order next time. The steak was well cooked and seasoned. My one complaint was my meal took quite some time to come out so was left waiting while the others got started. I got the snapper and when it arrived the top wasn't crispy skin but rather very soggy and made the meal eat very one note without texture. For the high price point was just a bit disappointing. I ate here with my co workers while on a work trip and I have to say this has been one of the best meals I've had all year! My boss is related to the head chef, so my experience is most likely a little biased, but the food was absolutely incredible. They catch all seafood day of so it's incredibly fresh. We started with some raw oysters on the half shell and they were so good. I heard there is something special about the way they are trapped that makes them so delicious and that people will travel just to try these oysters! We also had some milk bread and fried green tomatoes all of which were just as delicious. For dinner I ordered the cacio e Pepe, which is one of my favorite dishes of all time (and it's so hard to find at a restaurant). My only regret is that I didn't order shrimp to go with it because my co worker did and they looks and smelled incredible. For dessert we tried one of everything on the menu and shared a French press. Abt time I can order a French press at a restaurant I just feel like it elevates the experience. My only complaint here is that most of the desserts were topped with pistachios and I have a severe allergy. We didn't know this when we ordered them, so I wasn't able to eat much, but what I did get to try was so good. This review is for the patio bar only! This was our second annual trip to Topsail and our second annual trip to this bar on the day before we leave. The atmosphere is awesome and the drinks are divine. Our bartender Patrick was great!!! The only thing I wasn't fond of were the prices...both of my cocktails were at least $14 each, which seemed a little pricey, BUT they were so pretty it seemed worth it. I got the Bramble On which is wonderful if you like bourbon, and The Day Drinker which was delightful and not too sweet. My friend got the Up All Night, which was so yummy and the Blueberry Lavender Mojito which she thought was a little sweet. (Our husbands just tried every IPA on the menu LOL.) Very enjoyable afternoon, trying to cheer ourselves up about leaving in the morning. Maybe next year we'll try some food! read more

Unfortunately, after the change of chef/management I've been disappointed with the menu (limited, no fresh catch, very limited on potential substitutions, etc.). Staff is friendly and attentive but the atmosphere is a bit stuffy, not good for kids; a large change from the previous ambience, food options and quality.
