It had been a very long time…read moresince I had eaten at the former Victorian Station Tea Room, and the Bistro has replaced whatever replaced the tea room. We went for lunch on Tuesday and the place was closed. No hours posted. We tried again on Thursday and voila! it was open. All the tables now are downstairs in the former Ute's gift shop. It is very eclectic in that room with mismatched everything. Upstairs where we used to dine has sofas and coffee tables. I gotta say, the place seems musty and the vibe took me back to some places I'd rather forget about from the early 70's. Parking is scant, kind of a "it's ok to park on the grass" kind of place. I was dining with 2 friends and one would give the place 3 and one a 4. My friend who would give it a 4 said the water was the best water he ever tasted. So there you go. There was one long table reserved but we were the only guests. Before we left 2 more tables had guests. The waitress was very sweet. She handed us paper menus and on the back was a coupon saying free iced tea with lunch purchase, so when she took our drink order I said I would have the special on the back - the iced tea. "Oh no," she told me. "That is a coupon for a flyer they had passed out previously and they just used the flyers to print the menus to save paper." For crying out loud. You give me a menu with a large coupon stating I get a free iced tea, and tell me it doesn't apply. I'm sorry but right there, the iced tea that would have probably cost you five cents to honor, should have been provided. How am I supposed to know the info on the menu isn't valid? So I ordered the afore mentioned water. I believe we all ordered the chicken salad. It was OK. I wouldn't get it again but the menu is still 'under development.' I was told.I asked if the potato salad was made with mayo or mustard, and she told me mayo with a teensy bit of mustard. I ordered it and out came a very yellow mustard filled potato salad that I did not like at all. It was like the kind you get from Food Lion in a big tub and bring to a pot luck when you are too busy to make anything, even though I'm sure it was made fresh. My friend liked it and the other one got potato chips - def NOT homemade. They have live music at some times I guess, and my friend who is an aficionado of live music said he would come back there. He probably won't though. I think he just liked the place better than I did. I can't imagine the sound in there if a band was performing because the tables are right up to the performing space. Since we visited we added it to our list of places for lunch, but the two times I have suggested it I've received a resounding, "No!." So when I will be able to give it another try I don't know. I also really like that they serve wine too, so there's something for everyone depending on what you're in the mood for. Service has never been an issue for me. It's always been fast and efficient, even when they're busy. My biggest complaint is honestly the crowds. A lot of times it gets really crowded, and there isn't enough parking, so you end up having to park across the street. The problem is that there's no traffic light there, which makes crossing the street pretty stressful when traffic is heavy. The left turn out of the place can also be frustrating because it's on such a busy road. It can cause traffic to back up, and I've seen some pretty questionable situations with cars trying to get in and out. And once it gets crowded, seating becomes another issue. There simply isn't enough seating for the number of people who show up. Obviously, it's a great problem for the business to have, but not necessarily a great experience for customers. Overall, I really enjoy coming here for the events, food trucks, seasonal brews, and wine. I just wish the parking, traffic, and seating situation were better because those things can definitely take away from an otherwise great experience.

While they do give unlimited hints, we tend to be on the stubborn side and like to wait until we just absolutely can't figure it out. Haha.. Having seen him host at numerous bars around the Hampton Roads area I would rate his sound a 3.5/5 as he will randomly bump the bass up on slow songs drowning out singers, showmanship I'd give a 3/5 as he will call people by the wrong names and and doesn't have much hosting flair, I'd give him a 2/5 for singing rotation as he lacks the digital list that most hosts have transitioned to over the last decade that lets singers know when they are up, and the most egregious hosting sin, he will cherry-pick his list to get his locals and friends can sing more or leave once they have gotten to sing multiple times to others 1 time or even none. Over all his town shows are a 2.8. I cannot speak to private events but would assume the would be better as the playlist and rotation are generally controlled by those that are paying for the Show.

Gary set up 2 hours before his scheduled start time to make sure his equipment fully operational prior to the arrival of the first guest. Based on the average age of the attendees, I doubted there would be too much interest in the karaoke aspect. I was wrong, Gary was able to entice many to show off their singing skills. The guests didn't want the party to end, so Gary agreed to stay an additional hour. It was a great experience, and wouldn't hesitate to use Gary for any function. Highly recommend him.

The Acis String Quartet is outstanding with Violinist Johnathan Spence heading up the group. The music was beautiful and they all performed above and beyond our expectations. The music selection was lively, very entertaining and captivating. We look forward to their next concert in our area. Please go to one of their concerts as you will be thoroughly impressed with their performance!
