We came here for Valentine's Day with a reservation for three (2 adults and a child). We were greeted warmly and seated right away, which was impressive given how busy it was. Our first table ended up being under a spotlight that was directly in our line of sight (it looked like it was meant for the specials board), so we asked to move. Staff was accommodating and got us to a better table quickly. The space itself is really nice. It was clean, rustically decorated, and the live plants in liquor bottles on the tables are a nice touch. Our server was friendly from the start and took drink orders right away. My daughter and I had sodas, and my husband ordered the Southern Charm Old Fashioned off the specials menu, which he enjoyed. The menu is on the smaller side, which we actually like. One unique detail was the option to "buy a round for the kitchen," which we thought was a really nice touch and decided to add it when we ordered our appetizer. We started with the fried deviled eggs after a friend recommended them. They were creative with three styles (classic with pickle, togarashi ginger, and crispy prosciutto), but overall a bit on the dry side and not as flavorful as we expected. We asked for Dijon, but they don't have it. Our server suggested and brought out the Baja dipping sauce instead, which did pair well and kind of improved them. My husband had the fish and chips and really enjoyed it. He said the fish was flaky and well cooked. I ordered the Union grilled cheese, which unfortunately seemed like it had been sitting a bit before being served, as the bottom was soggy. It was just okay overall and not particularly memorable for the price. The sweet potato fries on the side were the clear standout. They were crispy, the perfect balance of sweet and salty and honestly the best part of the dish. Our daughter had the kid's smashburger. It was exactly that. Service throughout the meal was good. She was friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and there when needed. The main disappointment came at the end. When our meals were served, the server actually offered sauces at the table (ketchup, mayo, ranch, etc.), and specifically suggested items like the baja sauce for the eggs and ranch to us. Because of that, we were surprised to see several charges for the sauces on the bill, especially since they were offered and recommended at the table with no mention of any additional cost. We were also charged a credit card fee, with no signage anywhere (entrance, hostess stand, or menu) indicating that paying with a card would include an extra charge. It just left an unnecessary sour note on an otherwise solid, casual meal. This was easily a zero-star experience and a very disappointing way to celebrate a birthday. We made a reservation in advance for a party of seven to celebrate my father's birthday, knowing it would likely be busy and wanting to plan accordingly. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations from the start. Our reservation was at 5:45 PM, and after nearly two hours, we left at 7:30 PM without ever receiving our entrees, and some of our drinks never arrived either. What made matters more frustrating was the lack of communication. Our server came back 3 times to tell us they were out of ingredients for drinks we had ordered, but never offered alternatives or clarified what was available, leaving us stuck and repeatedly restarting the process. We were never checked on and he only came by to tell us our food wasn't ready or they couldn't make what we ordered. To make matters worse, several tables seated around us, many with larger parties were fully served, finished their meals, and left while we were still waiting. It was incredibly discouraging and made us feel completely overlooked. Overall, this experience was extremely frustrating, poorly managed, and not at all what we expected. I used to go here more frequently to drink at the bar, so this time is the first in a long time and I still enjoy them as much as I used to. My Mediterranean bowl was excellent and had everything I wanted, including crisps to dip into the hummus. The fish taco were crunchy and came with a side, and the sweet potato fries were crispy and delectable. They has a nice selection of beer to choose from too, so you'll always have options. Our waitress (and really any bartender I've ever had since I've first been) was great and served us from start to finish. Definitely a place for a brew and bite to eat if you're nearby. read more

This is another staple in VB that I've visited many times before. They used to have an amazing brunch that's sadly discontinued :( so we decided to try them out for a nice casual dinner and the flavors were beyond what we could have hoped for. Our server was attentive and quick to help us find recommendations. We ordered their beer battered fish and chips that came out fresh and crispy! That's the best combo. The other entree we ordered was the black and bleu burger (I'm a huge bleu cheese lover) and the crumbles added the perfect contrast with the savory patty. We went on a Monday night which is burger and beer night-$10 burgers advertised everywhere as burgers with no restrictions. When we got our tabs, we sent her back to recalculate but she told us that the burgers we had ordered weren't the $10 burgers. On a menu board which wasn't readable because of the reflection, it said that only the smash burgers were $10. She warned us that it would take a long time to recalculate the tabs. All the tabs had a 20% gratuity which we expected for our large group and a credit card fee. Since I paid cash, I recalculated the tab without the credit card fee and asked for change. She couldn't make the change and absorbed the rest of the credit card fee for her tip. At no time was I rude but I did mention as I left that I wouldn't be back. I heard "Good." read more

I stopped by Union Ale House on a Monday night because I had a craving for a really good burger and let me tell you, I am so glad I did. We were seated right away and I couldn't help but notice the rustic vibes and decor in this place, it was very nice. After looking over the menu, I was torn between the Elote Burger or the Whiskey Row Burger. The server mentioned that both were great but recommended the Whiskey Row Burger. All burgers are served either 'traditional' or 'smashed' so I chose the smashed option with Truffle Fries. As we waited, I ordered the Union Margarita which included fresh, squeezed orange juice and it was great! Once the burger arrived, I was shocked to see how big the 'smashed' patties were. The Whiskey Row included bourbon bacon jam and blue cheese crumbles on a brioche bun! It was absolutely delicious and the burger was cooked perfectly!!! The sweetness from the jam mixed with the saltiness of the blue cheese created the perfect combination. The truffle fries were good as well but I feel lacked the abundant, truffle flavor. I highly recommend stopping by Union Ale House to try their drinks and their amazing burgers! The staff was nice and checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed. Yesterday evening was my 3rd visit to Union and they just keep getting better. If it wasn't such a drive for me, I'd probably be here weekly. Parking here is private lot and is a little tricky to access if you're eastbound on the Blvd. You'll have to turn onto Great Neck, turn into a shopping center and wind your way around to the restaurant. It's easy to access if you're heading west on the Blvd. Last night, it was just hubby and I, so we sat at the bar. It was a fairly quiet Sunday evening and it looked like half the restaurant was not in use, but the bar was lively. They had a few games on, which is always a plus for us. Of note, they have music bingo on Sunday evenings, which is a good opportunity to try to win a gift card. The bartender was engaging and super friendly. She had great recommendations for us. Hubby opted for steak tacos. He liked the flavor, but the portion size was more like a small tapas or non-shareable appetizer. There was plenty on the menu he wanted to try and will opt for something else next trip. I had the Med bowl with grilled chicken. This entree, on the other hand, was huge! PB & J burger lacked all the flavors promised but could be better if you ask for extra jam and honey, as they are lost in the sandwich. This review is specifically about the lack of professionalism and customer service from the manager on duty. We were dining as a family and are fully aware there is no kids menu here -- that was made abundantly clear. **Even though the upper manager responded to this messaging saying they did have a kids menu and provided coloring as well for children, this was not what we were told or the service we were given. It was made very clear to us when we asked for a children's menu that one didn't exist.** One of our children ordered the UA Grilled Cheese with no toppings at all (just bread and cheese). Before the order was even placed, I specifically asked if there was flexibility on the $16 price given that she was not receiving the full dish. I was told they would "work with me." When the bill arrived, the price had not been adjusted. Our server explained that he had tried, but the manager refused. I asked -- politely -- if he could speak with her again, understanding from years in the restaurant industry that adjustments are often made based on actual food consumed. The response relayed back to me from the manager was simply: "We don't have a kids menu and the prices are the prices." That was disappointing -- not because of the money, but because of the complete lack of flexibility, empathy, or customer-first thinking, especially after setting an expectation that the situation would be worked with. To be clear: we were a paying party of four. Everyone ordered full meals, drinks, and cocktails. This was not a case of sharing food or cutting corners -- it was a reasonable request to not pay for ingredients that were never served. The takeaway is simple: if you have children, this is not a family-friendly establishment, and the management does not appear interested in accommodating families -- even when asked respectfully and in advance. There is a good selection of Virginia beers on tap and a rotating selection of beers from around the country on tap. They also have a cider on tap. There is a small selection of wines, canned beers, non- alcoholic beers, and for those who just graduated from soda - hard seltzer. The food menu clearly labels gluten- free and vegetarian options. There is a nice selection of appetizers, flatbreads, bowls, burgers, sandwiches. My husband and I both went with bowls I had the poke bowl and my husband had the chicken bowl. Both were delicious and above what one would expect for a pub. Mine came with succotash, which I thought was an interesting choice, but it worked. We split the pretzel, which was amazingly good. Visited this place on a Saturday just in time for brunch... too late to Calle breakfast too early to call it lunch. Lucky us they had a special for mimosas so we started the day right. I follow with a flight of beer from their selection and all 4 choices were great. Free verse, tangerine wheat, Jai Alai and ghost rider. For appetizer we had the "fried deviled eggs" never had battered and deep fried eggs before so that was a first for me. They were delicious!! For my meal I had the Elote burger with street corn fritter and cheese. The fries were DELICIOUS, make sure you get the fries, don't get those other sides, unless you get them in addition. Don't be like those people who ask for pickles in their burgers... The service was adequate and the ambiance was relax and chill but welcoming and warm. Plenty of tvs playing a variety of sports so this makes it a great place to come and hang out, have a beer or two while watching a game and spending time with friends and family. The wait time for the food is a little on the loooong side but that just gives you the opportunity to get some more beers, chit chat or just watch the game(s). This place has been on my list for quite sometime but it's out of my but today I had loads of time. I'm so glad I finally tried it. Came in for sort of a late brunch/lunch situation. They had the $2 mimosas special which is such a win. I had the shrimp and grits and it was fan-freakin-tastic, the sauce was creamy and favored to perfection. The shrimp (5) was piping hot and cooked well. The grits were hot and piled on with a generous serving. Hubby had the omelette with hash browns and he loved it, the dish came with an English muffin or toast. Good service. excellent food, lots of daily specials and options. My last couple visits to the Ale House have left me delighted. Great food, great atmosphere, and great service. There is a great selection of appetizers, flatbreads, seafood, handhelds, and large plates - as well as a large assortment of brews. Our servers have been wonderful and make sure our orders are accurate every time. This is a new favorite spot of my boyfriend and I, especially because it's just down the street from our house. It is a little bit hidden behind the Hardee's in a separate strip mall. We have both tried the giant pretzel and the goat cheese skillet. Both were delicious. The spent grain pretzel had a hearty taste and the cheese dip was yummy. My partner favors the spicy mustard. The goat cheese skillet was savory and delicious, but I wish it came with more than 3 crostinis. The creamy goat cheese was great with the crispy toasted bread. We also shared a cheesecake dessert, which was divine. Personally, I have tried the Fish Tacos and the Beyond Burger. The fish tacos were so good, the fish filets fried nice and crispy. They were topped with flavor sauce and fresh veggies. I was blown away. And their beyond burger is the best I've had! It was cooked perfectly. I have also tried their garden salad, mac and cheese, and french fries. All were delicious, especially the homemade mac and cheese. So creamy! My boyfriend has gotten 2 different burgers - the Whiskey Row and the PB&J. Both were made with high-quality beef and cooked to his exact preference. The burgers here are crafted masterfully and have delicious and unique toppings. They are perfectly portioned as well, not too much of any one thing. Most of the food is fantastic. We have never had to wait to be seated either. But we do go during the week when it is not very busy. Always clean and the service has always been good. We like to meet friends for dinner at Union Ale House. The menu is not huge but such a great selection. The Poke bowl is a favorite in our group. We also like the burgers because you can get meat or a beyond burger. It is always nice to have a vegetarian options when meeting other people for dinner. I like all the flatbreads. Fresh, sweet and savory. The only thing we did not like has been the steak tacos. The meat was great but that is all that was on the tacos. We thought there should be some type of slaw or greens or just something besides meat. We will not order that again. Everything else has been great. This is such a nice restaurant and they have a wonderful area you can have parties. Great for small and large groups. I talked my office into having our Christmas Party at Union Ale. It was great. So, my rating reflects the fact that I feel dupped by the name. When I think ale house, I'm thinking a wonderful list of beers and drinks. There seemed to be more cocktails than beers and the rotating draft list was literally the same local beers offered at every restaurant and that you could get by driving a few miles to the brewery itself. The atmosphere was nice, felt warm and inviting. Plenty of seating options and the menu looked decent. We had just finished eating so we only got drinks. I will say the service was great. Our server was attentive but not overwhelming and kept up great banter with us. I wish I remembered her name but she was awesome! I stopped by at 6 Tuesday evening and seating was plentiful. Nice atmosphere. Great service from Christian at the bar. I went alone to get the lay of the land and I was very impressed. Good happy hour specials available. I enjoyed my hibiscus mojito very much. The appetizers were a few dollars off during happy hour. I tried the Tuna Tetaki. It was delicious with just the right amount of spice for me. The seared tuna was well cooked and well presented. The avocado was perfectly ripe.
