We visited Beachcomber BBQ & Grill today for lunch. We've been including it on our foodie travels down the coast of Georgia for years. The gentleman taking our order was friendly and the service was quick. This is a dive bar with loyalties to the University of Georgia. We Auburn alums were welcomed just the same. For the first time, we tried the pulled pork sandwich and it was delicious, especially with the hotter BBQ sauce. Also for the first time, we tried the onion rings. They were good, wide cut and thick battered. Cooked perfectly. We got our standard hamburger, the Dixie Burger with bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo. Part of this is on us in that we came in at 8:35, and they close at 9:00. Burger was big and ok. Lettuce looked iffy so took it off. Tomato the same. Biggest disappointment was they were out of the drink I ordered. With that in mind, they should have taken it off my bill, especially since tea tasted a bit off, too. read more

This place is out of control!!! Let's start with the service. I ordered ribs and brisket and my homeboy ordered the brisket plate. We also got smoke wing app in buffalo sauce. The amount of food per plate is crazy large! The bbq is also crazy good!!! Also I love the ambience! I will be coming back to this place when I'm in the area. The food is absolutely amazing. My family stayed in St. Simons for two days and we went here each day. The pulled pork is lean and there's absolutely no fat in it. The baked beans are wonderful. This was the best BBQ I ever had. Every server here is very nice and they are so friendly. Their service to us was amazing. The environment was loud, but a good loud. Went into the Beachcomber today and placed an order for 2 sandwiches and fries. I was given a pager and told that I would be paged when my sandwiches were ready. After 45 minutes and being aware that at least 5 people behind me received their meals, I went in to inquire. I was told it would be soon. I went in angain after an hour and fifteen minutes and asked again. The counter person turned and asked the cook, who stated that he had been paging me for the last 40 minutes. I told both of them that my pager never went off once.The guy at the counter said, 'Oh that is right, that must be the broken pager'. He told me he would put the order in again and I told him I wanted my money back. He walked away and about 10 minutes later the manager showed up and was visibly annoyed that I was requesting a refund. At no time, did he apologize. I told him my bill was $44 and that I had given a $10 tip. I stated that I wanted the entire amount refunded to my card. He handed me a receipt and said here it is. When I went outside, I realized that they only refunded me my $44 and not my $10 tip. I went back in and the counter person was unable to locate the manager and he gave me $10 in cash. Mistakes happen but I will not excuse the fact that they never apologized , or at the bare minimum call out my name if I haven't responded to the page. If you decide to go here, ask them to check and see if the pager works. read more

The outdoor patio and live music (that was setting up) along with coastal vibe gives this BBQ joint a cool atmosphere. Stopped by for some good ol bbq. This place is rather small with an area to sit inside with a sofa and a bar area in the back and there's and area in the front with picnic tables to chill and eat outside. When we arrived, one of the waitresses let us know to place our order at the window and to sit anywhere we would like. Once we found the full menu, we did just that and found a nice spot outside in summer breeze. The guy who took my order wasn't the friendliest but he took my order (BBQ pork sandwich with fried okra and Brunswick stew) and I was deeply saddened when he let me know they were out of mac n cheese. I've learned no matter the BBQ spot, if you don't get there before two hours of closing time, they'll be no oooooey gooooey cheesey mac n cheese. Anyway, I got my food within 5 minutes and was pretty pleased. The pork wasn't super fatty like some places and the bun was toasted perfectly. The bbq sauce had a nice sweetness to it and the fried okra was delicious. I wasn't that big of a fan of the Brunswick stew because it was a little too tangy for my taste but it wasn't bad. ***Edit for Tom the owner**** After receiving Tom's heartfelt response to our less than mundane experience, I felt I owe it to the man to clarify my prior comments and acknowledge his. Here goes. 1. Tom's smoker is indeed out front of his establishment. I'll also note that it's, what Tom, about a 5.5-6 ft in length, barrel smoker? Probably a double rack. 2. If the brisket is on for 15-16 hours, I'm thinking he's running somewhere between 12 and 14 lbs on the precook weight. And who in the world are you getting to sit up all night to run that smoker? Or are you nextdaying them? 3. I'll come back to that brisket in a minute. The wings, 3 hours in the smoker should have that bone all but falling out. I say should, since this is not the case with the ones we had. 4. Then there's the ribs, the butts, the chickens and the turkeys. Lotta meat, maybe one of them is better than the crap you put on our plates. 5. The best thing you served us was the fresh from frozen, unsalted Ore Ida wanna be, fries. Mac and cheese wasn't nothing to write home about but wasn't horrible (let's call it a bit better than mediocre) and the slaw was. Well, it was left in the bowl it came in. The beans? I'll just stick with my original comment on them. So that leaves back to the brisket. 14 plus hours on a brisket, done right, means three things can easily be expected. Deep smoke ring. Bark. And melt in yo mamas mouth goodness. The smoke ring looked like it'd been drawn on with a Sharpee, the exterior was barely more than the same color gray as the interior - and no bark. And to the consistency? Since when is having to literally griddle/silverskin/whatever the hell it was, acceptable on a brisket? Even if it is on a sandwich? And just so I'm clear, there was no melting in the mouth of any of that brisket. To summarize? Beachcomber didn't suck. It blew. And in the face of the crummy experiencing, the owner is more interested in trying to excuse the shite food by trying to call you out rather than making any attempt at all toward customer relations/service. Not even a fastfood level "sorry you had a bad experience" It's a bar. That serves food it calls bbq. We thought it was garbage. But hey, you guys make your own decisions. ******End Edit******* Had brisket and wings. If either has been smoked beyond an hour in a pellet smoker I'll kiss your behind. Slaw sucked. Beans sucked. Unsalted fries out the bag. Best thing at the meal was my tea. 50 bucks for two. That kind of money for two brisket sandwiches and smoked wings had better leave me longing to return.
