We were visiting St Simon's and a friend recommended that we stop here. Well, I couldn't be happier that we took her advice as we stopped once for lunch and got takeout for dinner two days later. The sliced brisket sandwich was piled high with tender delicious brisket. Loved the spicy sauce and the side of mac and cheese was also delicious. Wow! This was the highlight of my trip. Well worth the drive. First the pricing seems very fair for what you get. Ok ok, ribs are not suppose to fall off the bone when you pick them up. That is over cooked. These were perfect! They stayed on the bone all the way up to the bite. The brisket was spot on. I loved that the sauces were on the side as you could try it with just the seasoning on the meat and then with the sauce. Their mustard sauce was amazing. We don't have bbq like this in cali. We don't. Just like we don't have NY pizza, true NY pizza. I bought a bottle of sauce.... And it's gone already. Southern Soul BBQ is just as a remember it as a kid but even better. It had probably been 12 years since I have eaten here and it still hits the spot for good BBQ. You order inside and then can take a seat anywhere and they'll bring it to you. We opted for outdoor seating and the weather was perfect. I got the pulled pork sandwich with fries and my husband got the deluxe smoked turkey sandwich with mac and cheese and everything was great. I love the sweet sauce for the pulled pork and the mac and cheese was perfect. I will say the fries could have been warmer. We did come in 45 minutes before close but still. The berry cobbler was out of this world. It was so good we came back the next night just to get some of their peach cobbler to try. This place is busy. We lined up at 10:50AM and it was already full with a line. BBQ beans was the star side. Pulled pork and brisket were good. Potato salad too. We were in the mood for revisiting one of our favorite BBQ joints so we stopped by Southern Soul in Brunswick. What I was really craving was their claim to fame the Brunswick Stew. We ordered the stew as well as their jumbo pulled pork sandwich. The stew had a smoky savory broth with beans and big pieces of mea. It paired well with saltines crackers. The pulled pork was juicy and piled high and went great with the house made bbq sauces. The service was a little off the day we went. The cashier girl felt a bit aloof and did not smile or greet us when we walked in. The ambiance of this place is really cool with all kinds of photos and magazine clipping adorning the walls. I'm going to start first with customer service. My sandwich was made wrong. I ordered the Pimp Cheese as an add on to the Barbecuban and it wasn't added (although I was charged). When I brought it to their attention they immediately started to make me a new one. They didn't care that my sandwich was half eaten, they immediately went to make the order right. I stopped them from doing that and instead just asked for an extra side of beans. Talk about top notch service! Barbecuban- would rival any Cuban sandwich in Miami. The smokiness from the pork is a real standout. Loved every bite. The next I come here I'm going to get a side of mustard base bbq sauce and dip the sandwich in. Right by the SSI Airport, on the corner of the roundabout. Arrived for lunch, patio was full & folks lined up at the door. Small joint, very coastal!! Everyone was patient, talking to eachother & just a very chill vibe! We noticed this place was featured on Diners Driveins & Dives, so now we get excited!! Mom got a Ribs- said they were OK. Hubby got the Brisket- said they were really good. Okra was great, greens were OK. Slaw needed seasoning & greens are collards & were also pretty good. Son LOVED his Cuban sandwich!!! I came here for lunch. It was extremely busy. It took about 20 minutes to be noticed I had to give my order before sitting down. I was not seasoned and had to find my own seats by the bathroom door. Food arrived 20 minutes after I had ordered brisket and a cheeseburger cheeseburger was fine and brisket was above average. They were very tender and flavorful. WOW ! WOW ! Obsessed with this local spot. It was so good! We ordered the meat platter and it was enough for two people with leftovers. The people were so nice and you can tell that they get extremely busy during the weekends and are used to high volume. There were a few places to sit to side and lots of tables outside as well. Southern Soul is a great spot to check out if you are in the area. I never got a chance to see what the inside looks like as i sat at the outside bar the whole time. Super chill vibes though, My bartender was very attentive and made nice conversation. A lot of the guest that came in, seemed to be regulars and they were all easy to make conversation with. I would have given 5 stars, but the food which was prepared very well!! The meat was tender and juicy and everything came out great, I just think the meat can use a more pronounced rub and even have more of a Smokey taste coming through, especially in the meat. And the collard greens, again were good, i just think they could use more a little more salt, and maybe when they are cooking the greens incorporate some of the smoked meat for flavor. Lives up to the hype. We split the 3 meat sampler with turkey breast, ribs, and pulled pork. The turkey was by far best iv ever had, super tender, smoky, and juicy. The ribs had a nice sweetness and were tender without falling apart. The pulled pork was average, could have been a little warmer but the hot bbq sauce definitely helped out. The fries were some of the best iv ever had. Extremely crispy and had a nice flavor. The baked beans were super flavorful, they had a light mustard flavor and were not overly sweet. Even at 7pm the quality was very good which is sometimes a toss up with other bbq spots. Service was great, food didn't take long to come out, great environment to eat at. Yep, this place is worth the stop! First off the service is great! Greeted without haste, even with a growing lunch line behind us. Vacationing in southern Georgia and enjoying time in the Golden Isles. The area is beautiful with lush greenery, full rivers and warm weather. On the drive back to Savannah, we drove by Southern Soul BBQ with huge lines and smiling families ready for the Memorial Day weekend. We were surprised that they were featured on DDD. The establishment looks like a converted gas station. It was very clean. The picnic tables out front and limited inside dining makes this a cozy place. There were at least 40 people waiting in line for this popular BBQ. The staff is hustling, working with smiles and being very receptive to each patron's needs. Everyone was friendly, sharing tables, discussing where they were staying and excited about the long weekend. We ordered a smoked turkey sandwich, BBQ cubano sandwich and an order of hush puppies. The hush puppies were good with a crunchy exterior and soft on the inside. The turkey helping was generous and a mild smoked flavor. The sandwich had no condiments and needed the BBQ sauce to give it flavor. Two pieces of bread with smoked meat does not make a tasty meal. The BBQ cubano was tasty, had great pickles, melted cheese and a good mustard spread. I am confused as to why so many people stood in line for average BBQ. Perhaps, it is just convenient, served in a timely manner and what they are use to eating. I was disappointed with the overall product. The prices are not inexpensive for naked sandwiches and limitations on sauces. Having to pick a single sauce at the counter does not allow me to experiment a combination that works for me. Surely with the prices and volume of patrons, you could place the sauces at the table. I'm sure your margins will cover the expenses. read more
