I'm going with a solid 4 stars on this rating for Beachhead Condos solely based upon location and overall amenities for the pricepoint. If you care about easy beach access, a nice freshwater pool, reserved covered parking, and peace & quiet during your stay, Beachhead may be just right for you. If quirky old properties make you squeamish, keep looking for a newer hotel or other new construction short-term rental. Note that we stayed in Unit 106 and rented via VRBO; your experience may vary. Our 3rd floor unit had 2 bedrooms with queen-sized beds, 2 full baths en suite, a large balcony with dune and Gulf views, full electric kitchen, cold A/C, and fine WIFI. There were 2 futon sofas in the living room to max the sleeping capacity to 6, but we found the space to be perfect for our family of 2 adults and 1 teen. We never heard any of our neighbors and got the impression that many of the units are owner-occupied or long-term rentals rather than vacationers. Other shared amentities of note: - charcoal grills & picnic tables - playscape - large gameroom - volley ball court - heated pool - key-coded gates to pool and beach access - shower station at beach access point The property was built in 1969 in a primo location right at beach marker 4, somehow ideally situated close enough to the action of "downtown" Port A, but far enough away from both beach access roads to limit the biggest (and rowdiest) crowds. Being 50+ years old, the property has some quirks and does show need for updates. During our Summer 2021 stay, we noted that the pool restroom showers were out of order and there were numerous drainage issues throughout the property following a week of heavy rains. The heated pool and adjacent clubhouse with lounge and games tables were in excellent shape, perhaps recently overhauled. Our unit 106 clearly needed refreshed wall coverings, remodeled bathrooms, and appliance updates, as well as more frequent exterminator treatment (although roaches are almost impossible to avoid on the Gulf coast, it's still a bit upsetting to see even 1; we made sure all dishes were cleaned right away and dry goods effectively sealed). This was the nicest place we have stayed in Port Aransas! We stayed in unit 306 it had a nice ocean view. Everything in the unit was updated and decorated nicely. I never felt unsafe here and the unit was very comfortable. We were at the beach most of the time so I didn't get to see the other amenities the complex had to offer, but will definitely book here again! read more

Older property, fairly well kept. Pool is hot and dirty, beds in condo were old and uncomfortable. Tiny, tiny bathrooms. Grounds are not well kept. Overall, too pricey for the age and condition of the property. You can get something much nicer for the same price. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I brought my daughter and her 3 friends to this resort as an airbnb and we had myself, my 2 kids, one is 9 the other is 4 years old. And my daughter who's 17 and her 3 friends who are also 17. They were taking a shower at the showers at the beachhead property and 2 men from management came up to them and asked them if they had wristbands and they said that they were staying here (not to mention that the wristbands were only needed by the pool area idk why he was so persistent that they needed it at the shower) and that we only got 2 wristbands. He then asked how many people were in our unit and the girls told them that we got only 2 wristbands. He left and they put their clothes on and he came back up to them and asked again "how many people did you say were in the unit?" And my daughter told them 7 and that they couldn't do anything about it until the morning anyways and he told them to go up to our room and call management to get wristbands. So they came up, told us about everything and they put the 2 wristbands that we had on the girls (we were supposed to have 6 at least) and they went to the pool at around 10:30 pm. They go out there and are chicken fighting, and the same man and his little sidekick who didn't say a word the entire time, the man's name was Jerry, and I have no idea who the other guy was, came out and told them that the quiet time around here was 10 and to get out of the pool. In the rule book it says no where that you can't be at the pool past 10 pm. It does say quiet time, but it means being quiet. My daughter starts getting an attitude of course because this man is shushing her and treating her like a child, and they are just staring at the girls putting their clothes back on and watch them exit the pool area. The next morning at 7:30 am, the same man Jerry and his other little friend are banging at our door and tell us that we need to leave. Mind you we haven't been here 24 hours. This was our first night. My husband got upset because he woke up our baby and started yelling at him and the man called the police, saying that my husband hit him when he DID NOT lay a hand on anyone. The man quite literally scratched his own arm up to make it look like my husband attacked him. My husband ended up begging them not to press charges because at that point the police believed the management over anyone and wouldn't listen to his side of the story. Overall, I'm never staying here again and I'm really disappointed because Port A is supposed to be a cool place where everyone minds their business unless there's something serious going on. Anyone who has teenage girls I wouldn't advise taking them here at all, management will not leave them alone when they're half naked minding their business trying to have a good time. read more

Jerry, one the the property managers, came up to my 17 year old daughters several times bothering them and asking them questions and making them feel very uncomfortable. He was very disrespectful and were bothered by him the entire 24 hours that we were staying here. read more

We stayed for the first time in these condos and we really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in 203 , the condo seemed newly renovated and decorated super cute! The kids room had 2 twin beds each with a trundle , a TV and it's own full size bathroom with a great tub. Our room had a queen bed and a full size bathroom with a good size shower. Our room had a nice view out to the balcony and onto the gulf. The kitchen was equipped with dishes and utensils for cooking. We really liked that they had trash pick up service. We enjoyed being closed to the pool and the beach wasn't too long of a walk . We will be returning next year ! read more

I have to applaud the owners for bringing their property back on line after Harvey ( 9 months) many parts of the property as a whole were a little ragged... but what do you expect after the +10 hours of CAT 4 wind and an 8 foot storm surge. The board walk was intact, the rinse station was a go, the a/c was working . But overall a typical beach accommodation experience, the only thing that gave us pause was the excessive emails from management and the open parking policy which many of the fellow renters did not either read about and or understand. For example slot 102 or 205 is not reserved for 102 and 205.... those numbers are just showing you the approximate location of your room, so you can park close to your location. Translation... the clueless will block your vehicle in to "teach" you a lesson, because they don't understand the open parking concept. Whatever people, luckily I was on island time and was able to locate the violator(s), haters and move on. read more

Found this place by doing a search for vacation rentals in Port A but chose it based on positive reviews. We loved this place. It was comfortable and roomy and perfect for our family. We stayed in 503 and were very happy with the 2bed/2bath. Only issue we had was we had to block an exit door with a dresser in the 2nd bedroom to make sure our 3 year old didn't escape at night. Felt like home for the 3 days we were there. Loved that our room was right next to the boardwalk and the covered parking for each unit was nice. We will definitely stay here again next time we visit the coast. read more

We stayed at BeachHead for 4th of July weekend, 2010 and 2011. Last year, we stayed in 301, our friends in 307 and 406. Though each condo is decorated differently, they are basically the same layout and exactly the same price. All were comfortable, though 406 was a definite standout. This year, we were late in booking and had to choose 302, while our friends stayed in 306. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. 302 is a dump. We were met by an overwhelming odor of insecticide and immediately saw the result, 4 dead cockroaches on the floor. During our stay we saw MANY live cockroaches, roach poop on the walls, surfaces and even cockroach nests behind the pictures. The first night I had baby cockroaches climb on me while I was sleeping. I killed one on me and when I moved my pillow in the morning, had one scurry down the bed. We ended up moving all the beds away from the walls and taking off the bed skirts so that the points of contact with the ground were reduced. We were worried putting our kids to bed. The kitchen cabinets were a hodgepodge of what looked to be reclaimed cabinets? The door to the garbage wouldn't even close (which was unfortunate, because there were live cockroaches in there!). The counter was falling/sinking, as evidence by the line of broken caulk. The whole side of the refrigerator is a mess of rusted spots (not shown in pictures). Some of the kitchen drawers do not work. There was no cable to the TV, and with no antenna, meant there was no TV service the entire stay. The carpet was dirty and stained. The furnishings and decoration were dated, but fine. The bug problem alone led us to call the management twice, but they were unable to help us find another unit, as all were rented. They were completely unsympathetic on the phone. The woman told my husband, "Well, you saw the pictures of the unit!" Well, yes we did, but there were no roaches in the pictures and the write up said the TV would work. Only after our stay, when we showed them PICTURES of the unit did they offer us a 20% discount. Our friends, in 306 right above us had a slight insecticide smell, but found large dead roaches, and a couple live ones during their stay. 306 is a much nicer unit than 302, with a more recently updated kitchen, nicer decoration and furnishings. Though their refrigerator leaked constantly onto the floor, making a puddle. There are nice units at Beachhead, but be very aware that even though they price them the same, the units differ between a comfortable stay and having bugs scurry on you at night. Gross! read more

It started off as a nice family vacation , my husband , myself , and my 2 kids (12 and 16) were absolutely thrilled to arrive at the resort ! The pictures the description everything looked perfect. As soon as we walked in to our room there were 2 dead roaches on the floor .. along with the toilet in my husband and I's room was not operating . Flash forward my 16 year old daughter and I went for a late night swim at the pool , then some manager guy and his little side kick , (i believe his name was Jerry) asked how we were doing , and after literally just was standing , staring, and watching my daughter and I for 20 minutes! It made us both extremely uncomfortable. So we go back up to the room as we are walking up the stairs he makes an absolutely disgusting comment about my daughter and her appearance . My husband and I absolutely outraged packed everything and left the same night . If you have kids and go here WATCH OUT FOR JERRY he is the creepiest man ! read more

sad to read the negative reviews ... suppose the aged property is not keeping up with the times but yet the rental fee is too high, unless we round up several people to help pay the cost. I used to go to this place every year during the 90s and it was only about $80 a night plus a cleaning fee. Hope they either drop the cost or fix up all the rooms so they are all equal in value. Nice, clean and convenient property, but needed some attention. A living area lamp did not work...other lamps missing bulbs. The pool hours left a bit to be desired, closing at 10pm. The manager appears at the stroke of 10 and announces the pool's closing with "Attila the Hun" charm. read more

I would give these 3.5 stars if I could. I'm actually tempted to rate higher, simply because I was on the beach and enjoyed my stay immensely - hello, beach. It was great to be able to just walk down the wooden platform and be right on the water. And the views were great. But there is a huge discrepancy between how nice the condos are, despite the fact that they are all the same price. The other members of our party had a lovely condo - wood laminate, granite-esque counters, just an overall updated, nicely decorated space. My condo, on the other hand, did not look like it had been updated in quite a while. Old carpet, plain counters, old-fashioned decor, a lingering smell of bug spray in the air, and at least one roach house guest. It was hard to get past the fact that both condos were going for the same rate. It didn't put too much of a damper on our vacation - because, hello, beach! But I doubt I would be interested in renting a condo there again. read more

I should have checked the reviews better before signing up and I notice that i am unable to post a review on the Port A escapes site we booked from. The reviews there are very misleading. We grew up coming to the BH every summer growing up 70's 80's so feeling nostalgic my bff of 30+ years and I booked room 306. After an initial lecture from the office manager about not having our paperwork and going to the correct office to check in, we did get checked in and then returned to our room with hot pink doors and bags of trash out front. After calling, they came back later and got them. The inside of the room is NOT the same as the pictures on the site! There is an overwhelming smell of insecticide. The side of the fridge-covered in rust, the carpet is horrendous and the micro mini blinds were falling off of the windows.. We couldnt operate the lock on the back door and there was seagull droppings all over the corner of the balcony. There is plaster coming off of the walls and just general disrepair. The inside furnishings were ok- its a vacation home at the beach, the table was nice and the kitchen was stocked with most everything we needed. The first night there was no issue- we arrived around 70pm and drank a lot of wine, but Friday morning the roaches started in. GIANT roaches running around, some half dead, some dead. My friend slayed a 4" roach in my bedroom (the 2 twin beds) while I screamed out front. That ruined it for me. We were gone most of the day and evening on Friday. Friday night I couldnt sleep thinking bout roaches and finally woke up in the morning with 2 huge ones half dead right by my bed and in the bedroom. My friend found a couple in her bedroom closet. YUK!! I have friends with houses and condo's and they dont have roach issues so it is not just a "Texas Coast thing" as one reviewer wrote. I was able to warn my curious family- that some memories are just better left at that...memories. Not to mention it was a bout 350 bucks a night with tax. read more

Just stayed two nights. We were pleasantly surprised with all the amenities. It also had free wifi. The boardwalk to the beach was easily accessible. The place was clean and since we stayed over New Years, it was quiet. Check in was easy but port a escapes did not provide directions to condo. Siri was able to find the place. The call back for directions took an hour and by then the kids had jumped in all the beds a queen in one room and a full and twin in the other bedroom. It's the reason for 4 stars. Stayed in 105 and we were somewhat disappointed. There was a mothball odor and the carpets had several stains throughout the place. Also it was listed as having a king bed which was just two twins shoved together with king sheets over them. It had wifi, but it was so slow we had to switch back to 4g to read facebook! Badly in need of updating as well, furnishings were old and very cheap. We would not recommned this place. read more

My husband and I had a 3 night stay in 104 in September . It offered the quiet relaxing get away that we were hoping for. The condo is the complete package - clean and comfortable with free Wi-Fi, cable TV, covered parking, easy access to town and decorated in bright, breezy, coastal style. I could live there! The kitchen is fully furnished with everything we would have needed if we had wanted to prepare a complete meal. The living room is a cozy place to lounge around after a day at the beach. We only used the master bedroom, but the bed was very comfortable (and that is a must for folks like us with neck and back issues). We enjoyed mornings and evenings on the balcony watching the boats in the distance. The boardwalk makes it easy to access the beach and has a shower station to rinse off before heading inside. It is also very close to the pool, which is very nice itself. Will definitely stay again! read more
