On 5/17/22, I had dinner in The Dalles, OR at Beachwood Eatery & Lounge. This is a business that started as a food truck in 2015. All of their burgers are an 80/20 mix of 1/2 lb. of never frozen meat. I had their Pioneer burger ($11.95), which is a Cheeseburger with bottomless fresh cut fries. Not only was the burger delicious, it was a heck of a deal. There is a much better known brew pub on the more heavily traveled road through town that is charging $16.95 for a 1/3 lb. American Wagyu Bacon Cheese burger and fries. Even the local fast food joint, Burgerville, charges $10 for a much smaller burger and fries. By comparison, Beachwood Eatery's burger was made to order. My meal came with A+ service from my friendly and attentive server, David. I've eaten in the Dalles at least once a year since 1990. He is by far the most best server I have had the privilege of meeting. No matter that I arrived at the restaurant shortly before closing time. He treated me as if I was the first guest of the day. He was also happy to answer all of my questions. In addition to great burgers and hospitality, Beachwood Eatery & Lounge is family-friendly. They have a great kids menu with lots of options. Beachwood Eatery & Lounge has lots of homemade pies and other desserts. Based on how many chocolate cream pies were in the refrigerated case, my guess is that are a favorite. So, I have only eaten here twice, and both times were for lunch. I ordered burgers. One time I got a buffalo chicken burger and another time I got a cheeseburger with bacon. The blue cheese on my buffalo chicken was very strong. To be honest as far as buffalo chicken goes it was in your face. The price was reasonable, the burgers were good and they were served with heaps of fries. Both times my Gf ordered different burgers and enjoyed hers as well. The whole business is a little dark and worn down looking. They have a rack of pies you can pick from and plenty of seating. Wait staff was friendly and informal. Due to not knowing what else the moldy knife and butter had touched, and what else may have been mold contaminated, we weren't comfortable eating the rest of the meal. They refused to give a refund unless we went and dug all the food out of the trash can and honestly with everything else going on, it wasn't worth trash can diving for it. And I wasn't even dining in, it was a to-go order - and it has left me shook. We wanted a good burger and of course, Beachwood came to mind. We remembered how good the burgers were when they were just a food truck. Ahhh, the glory days. We have been in a few times since they became a brick-n-mortar establishment and it has always been just ... okay. Our to-go order experience the other night was NOT okay, it was a disaster. When we called in, we were put on hold, but could still hear everything going on and everything that was being said. We were literally put on hold for a chit-chat session. I thought that was weird, and a little rude, but whatever. If that had been the only problem I wouldn't be leaving this negative review right now. I arrived to get the order and stood near the register for many, many minutes before seeing an employee. They weren't busy. I had enough time to kill as I stood there waiting, that I actually counted all the tables with customers. Three. There were 3 tables of customers. I am not pointing this out to say that "no one comes here" (quite the contrary, I know a lot of people come here). I am pointing this out to say "why was the service so bad?". Once I was finally spotted by an employee, she began the task of finding someone who knew about my order. I got checked out and went on my way. But something in my gut told me I should check my food before I left. I ignored it. Wrong decision. Once home we open our food containers to find both orders to be... not exactly how we ordered them. For some weird reason my cheeseburger came with meat and cheese only. I can't imagine that's how they normally serve them? When the order was placed it was asked to not put any mustard or pickles on the burger. They elected to put nothing at all on the burger. It was also an extremely over cooked, thin patty. Bone dry. My boyfriend's burger (Mushroom & Swiss) was, again, wrong based off what we actually ordered. We asked for lettuce, tomato, etc. on this burger. I know M&S burgers don't typically come with that, but we did make a point to ask for it. Again, over cooked and not worth the money. 2 bad burgers and 1 order of fries = $22 I wish I had back. We called the restaurant before we even ate the burgers to speak to the owner, but he wasn't there. Listen, I know how delicious the burgers here are when the owner is cooking - but when he isn't, it's not worth the money. I will gladly update this review if and when I have a good experience here, but for now, it's not cutting it for me. Maybe it would have been better if we had dined in the restaurant, but if you can't send out good food to-go as well, then don't let that be an option. read more

We were looking for something different when we were in The Dalles. We headed towards a restaurant that I used to eat at a long time ago called The Sugar Bowl. I was surprised to see that it had a new name. Upon entering, the decor is the same as it was with the Sugar Bowl. 1955 car grill above the fireplace, old Route 66 fabric covering the booths, old car pictures along the top of the walls, big fireplace at one end, etc . Looking at the menu, it looked like it had a lot of the same types of things such as burgers, salads, and a salad bar. There was a sign next to the door that said something about an all you can eat pasta bar with salad bar. This is what I had. They had a chef located in the corner of the restaurant with a number of portable burners. We had a choice of spaghetti noodles, Fettuccine noodles, or Penne noodles. An Alfredo, meat sauce or Marinara, several meats including shrimp, sausage, and bacon, and various veggies. You told the chef what you wanted in your pasta and he cooked it right there. I ended up eating a portion of a shrimp and bacon Alfredo with tomatoes and spinach, and then I wanted just some traditional spaghetti with meat sauce. The Alfredo was very delicious. The meat sauce, in my opinion, was way too sweet. I know there are people who like sweet spaghetti sauce, I am just not one of them. My son had one of the bacon burgers. It came with bottomless fries. I did not try the burger but it was large and he ate the whole thing. I would definitely eat here again. Not sure about the pasta bar. It was very good but was spendy ($15.00) and I don't feel like I ate enough to make it worth my while. If you are interested in the Pasta bar, the chef said that they have it every Monday. read more

I had the Hog burger (plus a fried egg) which is a deluxe style burger (as opposed to a standard style burger like at Big Jims) and it was good. The lightly seasoned fries were especially good, maybe neck and neck with the fries at the Gorge Hotel and McDonalds for best fries in the Gorge. The fries sauce made them even better. Went there for the third time since it's opening. Admitting that I tried it during it's first month, I was extremely dissatisfied. As the saying goes, the third time's the charm! Exceptional service. I was promptly greeted and seated. I wasn't rushed to order, even though it was fairly late, 8:00, on a Friday night in The Dalles is late. I had a Momma Burger. A 1/3 pounder with all the fixings and bottomless fries. I didn't need more fries. The burger was cooked as ordered, medium rare. The purple onions were very fresh and crisp. The pickle slices on the side were unappealing. A crisp quarter slice would have been better. The potato bun was perfectly grilled and the condiment to bun ratio was exactly right. The hamburger maintained it's integrity. The fries were hot, crispy on the outside and the exactly perfect texture inside. Hunt's ketchup was served. A fry sauce or Portland ketchup would have been a nice alternative although I'm unsure if the owner/chef is targeting that market sector after meeting and discussing his long range goals. I'm looking forward to those things to come. The third time was the charm. I look forward to visiting again to taste some more sophisticated and challenging fare in the future. But for an absolutely famished person in pursuit of a satisfying burger late on a Friday night after a hard day's night of work, the Beechwood hit the spot. read more

We waited for over 10 minutes and decided to go somewhere to get service. This is like the 3rd time we've been forgotten here. And FYI don't get the bottomless fries! They taste fine but the waitress will never come back. Have had 2 different waitresses do this and every time you can here them talking to one another not worrying about there customers. My partner ordered a Whiskey Sour. Server didn't know what that was and asked what was in it. When met with looks of disbelief, we were assured that "i can just google it". Its a freaking WHISKEY SOUR. all of THREE INGREDIENTS. it took TWO ATTEMPTS to make something that was barely palatable. I inquired as to what beers were on tap. I was told that i could get up and look at what was available. WRONG ANSWER. if a customer asks what beer is on tap, YOU TELL THEM. if you don't know, YOU BRING THEM THE BEER MENU. you DON'T tell them to leave their table and go see what you have on tap. oh, and the endless "fries" were soggy and limp and nowhere near "fried".
