Stopped in on a recommendation. This place was busy both in house and takeout. Inside has a diner feeling with both table chair and booth seating., but it's fast food style order at the counter. They bring the food out. The place ran like a finely tuned machine and everyone working there was friendly and hard working. The service was fast considering how busy they were. They had a large munu of burgers, sandwiches, shakes, ice cream, abd breaded style seafood. We had cheesburgers and fries. Both were tasty. Awesome spot. Every few months I road trip from Oregon to Washington and Jim's is the perfect pit stop. Real, fresh ingredients the way it should be. The list of toppings for burgers is fantastic. The shakes are great, this time I tried chocolate with fresh banana and it was blended to perfection with small chunks of the fruit here and there. The only thing better than the food itself is the service. The folks here are always so friendly and they will not rush you to order but will double check you know all your options and get something you love. I am sad that I had not tried this place sooner! I was craving a burger for dinner but not like a fast food burger, a good homemade one. It has been just over a month ago that we visited Big Jim's and again they delivered perfect food and service. My wife had an excellent Garden Burger with Tator Tots, our daughter had the Walla Walla Burger again, with incredible Onion Rings, and I went with the reliable Big Jim Burger and Onion Rings. So many trips through the gorge without stopping here until very recently but instead of lamenting the missed opportunities I'm glad we were able to add this to every future trip. It's pretty easy to find and access on the east end of town. Tiny parking and tight drive thru lot so RVs will have to street park. We needed to stretch our legs so the walk inside was welcomed. Once there we were welcomed by the small town drive in charm. Friendly staff took our order and food was ready pretty quickly considering the volume of people. Lots of locals here so you know it's well loved. We took our food to go and may have regretted that because these burgers were huge and messy (a very good thing!). Burgers were amazing. While not quite smash burgers, they were well seared and crispy on the edges while still remaining nice and juicy. Both the fries and onion rings were hot, crisp, and plentiful, almost too much for this plus size eater to handle. Almost. On our way out, we met the local mooch of a cat. A tortoise shell tabby, well fed with a surplus of charm. He'd have made great company had we sat at the outdoor tables. About an hour and a half, but everything in the Dalles seems crystallized. Remote. Especially this diner which reeks of 60's charm and like a time capsule buried in the Dalles. I'm kind of an organization freak so we already knew we were going to split a Gorge burger with a side of fries and a shrimp basket with tots. The tots are always amazing, and it seems like no matter where you buy curly fries whether here or at Ken's Sidewalk Cafe in Canyonville, it's the same consistent greasy but perfectly seasoned goodness. The tots, ofc, blow them away, but they provide an amusing variety. Everything was great but the fried shrimp. I've always been an advocate of leaving shrimp as pure as you can or you lose the delicate flavor. Here was no exception. More about batter than the seafood. Wonderful Mom & Pop Burger joint! My husband ordered the Double Cheese Burger Combo. Both the hamburger and the fries we huge portions, and he said they were both very good. I had the BLT Combo. Again, the fry portion was more than I could eat. The BLT was different than I've had before - as you can tell in the picture, they heavily butter the bread. Usually good. Not on the 24th. The shake was good. The fries had way too much salt. They gave me fresh no salt fries. They are a coated fry. The burger was horrible. The lettuce was on the bottom of the burger. Basic preparation. I asked for Onions. No onions. The manager was quick to get me the onions. Nobody wants to eat a soggy burger. Toast the bun. I suggest skipping the burger and just have a shake. Order the buns toasted with the lettuce on the side. However, they forgot my onions. So, this is a training opportunity for management. The staff is young. Come on team set your phones down and pay attention. The burger was tossed out for the birds. NOT edible. Not sure I would stop for a free burger. Sad to give this review. This upscale, fast food restaurant, complete with a drive through, is located in the edge of The Dalles and a great place to stop for eats if you are in the eastern part of the Columbia Gorge Scenic Area. In addition to the many burger options, they have lots of spud sides - onion rings, curly fries, sweet potato fries, tots! I got the jalapeño burger with sweet potato fries and it hit the spot. They are famous for their milkshakes, many made with fresh Oregon berries. I go lite on ice cream so can't handle a shake, but on a 95 degree day, I wanted a little something. The soft serve vanilla cone was the perfect choice! The ice cream was so creamy and delicious. For those that prefer hard ice cream, they serve Oregon's own, Umpqua ice cream in many flavors. If you aren't in the mood for a burger, there are other options. Fried chicken sandwiches, chicken strips, grilled chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, grilled cheese, salads, cod fish and chip baskets and even chowder. Ice cream Sundaes, parfaits, shakes, and cones for desert. Lots of out door seating that is covered and shady, plus indoor seating. And a drive through. Thus, since I am driving from Battle Ground WA to support this restaurant, I will be continuing as I have done for years to Spookys in The Dalles for my favorite sandwich which is still done right after all these years. Love me some Big Jim's! I've been going to Big Jim's since I was a little girl and still love to hit them up when I am in town. They have many different types of hamburgers to choose from, but I continually just get the regular cheeseburger with Tillamook cheese. It's a classic and is a great burger. And if you're going to go only once, you might as well go all out and order the T-Rex burger. It was insane. Good luck trying to eat it in the car like I did. Awful jackass, there was no way. It's 2 1/2 lb beef patties, four slices of ham, two slices of Swiss cheese, And two slices of the best cheddar cheese in the country, Tillamook. Of course with lettuce and tomato. It was absolutely insane. I went there for the spectacle, and it was totally worth it. They do a lot of ice cream, milkshakes, all the classic diner stuff. I needed a burger this weekend while doing some hiking around The Dalles. We passed by Jim's and decided to give it a go. We ordered 2 burgers, one with tots and one with sweet potato fries, as well as a strawberry shake. The service was very friendly, pricing good. The portions are huge, one side definitely would've fed us both. As for taste, the sides were what you'd expect, but the burgers were fairly bland. We both felt they needed to up the spice content on the patties. I poured some of the fry sauce on mine to add a lil tang. Big menu, friendly service, good shake and large side portions...for me they just really need to ramp up that patty! read more

Located in, to us, a rather odd location, at the intersection of three roads on the outskirts of The Dalles. Yes, there is parking, and that is good news, as I did not see alternatives anywhere close. Menu up on the wall or in your hand. You will find a "family of burgers" to choose from. Lot of varieties and varieties within varieties. Stack 'um up. Of course fries, grilled cheese, turkey burgers, chicken, chili, soup and salads, corn dogs and ice cream. And, given that you are in the Pacific Northwest, they have salmon chips and salmon burgers, fish burgers, also and good old fish and chips. Remember the 50's, as they have hard and soft ice cream. Sundays, cones and dishes of it. Floats and lots of toppings. Super good for children and adults that want to be children, at least temporally. This location was kind of a hidden Mom-n-Pop place for burgers and fries. En route to the Oregon Coast it was a good quick stop to catch a quick bite. Pros The front staff/cashier (not sure if it was the owner) was polite and helpful. I appreciated his demeanor and willingness to help. Cons I don't have anything at the moment, but give me a couple weeks to think through and I'll update this post. I didn't take as many photos for this location as my kids were hungry and started eating before I could take the photo. Overall It was a good quick stop to catch a bite.
